Saltaire Festival Exhibitions, entertainment and something for everyone The village is looking glorious, bathed in the recent early summer sun, and the programme for Saltaire Festival 2019 is taking shape at Festival Towers.
“As a long-standing visitor to the Festival it is great to be more formally involved and I can’t wait to see this year’s theme really come to life in homes and businesses across the village.”
The 10-day format will be familiar to most and this year has more than its fair share of highlights across the 100 or so individual events.
“We’re looking to feature an eclectic mix of gardens, sculptures and pop-ups and really anyone can have a go!”
Following on from the success of last year, there will be a Festival Poetry competition based around the Festival theme for 2019, Textiles, Technology and Time. The Winning poems will be published on the BBC Screen and in the Saltaire Review and there is an opportunity for the winning poets to perform them at one of the Festival events, Yarns of Time. Ros Garside, Festival Board member and Events-lead, masterminded the competition and is looking forward to the entries flooding in once again! “We had such a good response to the competition last year across all the age groups and seeing them performed at last year’s Poetry Night was a real highlight of the Festival. We can’t wait to read this year’s entries!” Following the success of recent years, the opening weekend will feature Open Gardens and Pop-Ups in residencies across the village. There’s still time for residents to get involved and put their house on the trail map – quite literally! The new Festival Chair, Ian Andrews-Swailes, is encouraging residents to reflect this year’s theme in their pop-ups.
The first of the Festival events have recently been announced with the full programme to follow mid-July. The ever-popular, and usually sell-out Comedy night on Wednesday 18th September will feature Keith Donnelly plus support, whilst the top floor of Salts Mill will house a brand-new exhibition by Tim Smith entitled Weaving the Future. As well as the Open Gardens and Pop-Ups, Roberts Park will be the place to be on the opening weekend if you have little ones, as the Children’s activities take over and provide a whole host of fun, entertaining and educational events for children and their families. Full details of the poetry competition and the latest events news will be available on the Festival website. Make sure you have the dates in your diary and look out for more information about the full programme and tickets sales soon. There will be a range of essential oils, organic products, crystals, art, crafts and jewellery and on offer, as well as Louise Buckley returning with Tropic, the award winning skincare range. The organisers, Shipley born and bred reiki master Diana Burton and her daughter Stephanie are passionate about creating an inclusive, high energy event with something for everyone. Whether you are a seasoned yogi, holistic practitioner, or a complete novice to mind, body and spirit events, you will be able to enjoy the atmosphere, have a great day out and perhaps discover something brand new. The collaboration of so many small businesses in such a fantastic venue makes this event really special and it looks set to be just as well attended if not more so, than last year. Shipley Open Gardens A local collective of gardening enthusiasts are preparing for another year celebrating Shipley’s Open Gardens this June. The open garden scheme has run for many years in conjunction with St Peter’s Church, is totally nonprofitable and has helped raise funds for many local and national charities. It gives garden hosts and visitors alike, the chance to talk about all garden or plant related subjects and the opportunity to share ideas and be part of the wider, flourishing community buzz. This year there are 11 gardens taking part over the two days, most offering an assortment of homemade refreshments, some with plant stalls and hopefully all giving the visitor a chance to witness something different in each. Look out for a kaleidoscope of 29 Butterflies in one garden which was kindly donated by Cobbles & Clay (Haworth) for the event. Also, local hand crafted pottery artist Helen Lealman is donating some of her prised work to be sold with all proceeds to charity. Shipley Open Gardens are also working in conjunction with the Children’s Society shop in Bingley Road, Saltaire, to create a window display and where you can pre-buy a programme before the weekend. Buy a programme on the day or in advance from the Children’s Society shop. For further details, look for Shipley Open Gradens on Facebook or call 01274 779658 or 01274 587118.

Sonia Sandhu
20
Sonia built a reputation in Bradford for her vegan street food and kitchen pop-ups. She is now is part of the kitchen team at Bread + Roses on North Parade.
Where did your interest in food come from and when did you decide to make a career out of it?
a cafe setup? Did you enjoy being involved in the creation of Bread + Roses from the start?
I grew up around great Indian food made by my mum and nani ji, so always enjoyed cooking but when I switched to a vegan diet in 2015, food became even more exciting for me. Being creative with plant based ingredients, I’d love to share my food with friends and family, who really encouraged me. So I started with a few stalls at vegan festivals, and from there I’ve continued to work more and more with food whilst reducing my hours in various other day jobs. Since then I’ve had some amazing experiences: catering weddings, Supernormal Festival, themed supper clubs, some brilliantly memorable events with the Brick Box, and even incorporating my food into performance workshops when working on making a play with Common Wealth Theatre Co. All great fun!
There’s so much more to manage in the day to day running of a cafe and I’ve learned a lot whilst on the job. It’s a pleasure to have played a part in the creation of Bread + Roses, which has been a massive team effort involving long hours and dedication. It has not been without its challenges, which at times has been difficult, but this makes seeing happy customers loving the space and what we have to offer even more rewarding.
We got to know you through the Sonia Sandhu street food kitchen. How much fun was that to do and what did you take from it? Those were some of the first regular pop ups I did at Bradford Brewery, which I loved and learned loads from. I remember at the first one, I’d prepped loads but sold out of food within an hour and a half, and me and Dipak (who DJed at these events, got to fully bring the Desi vibes), were finished and sat having a beer by 8pm, wondering what and how that had just happened. These pop ups really helped my self belief - each time I would change up the menu, people seemed to love it and kept coming back. The more of these I did, I got better at all the behind the scenes stuff: organisation, menu planning, budgeting and prep, and I’m so glad for that experience. Oh yeah, and remembering to factor in time to feed myself too. That’s important. What’s the key to great street food?
If you had to pick one, what’s your favourite ingredient? Aubergines! And a favourite dish? I was in Kerala earlier this year and learned to make appam with potato and pea coconut stew. They are these lovely and light little pancakes, spongy in the middle with lacy and crisp edges. You use them to mop up the creamy and delicately spiced stew. I am obsessed. Making and eating this brings back memories of the best holiday of my entire life, too, so it’s doubly delicious. There seems to be a growing appetite for good quality vegan and vegetarian food. Do you feel that the bar has been raised in terms of what people expect now? Totally. I think until not even that long ago, veggies and vegans would genuinely rejoice when finding at least one meal option on a menu. People are becoming much more switched on about the environmental and health damage, and ethical concerns linked with consuming meat and dairy. So of course as the demand for vegan food increases, I think that successful food businesses need to keep up, staying on the ball with new and enticing dishes and styles of dining. Read the full interview at eatdrinkguides.co.uk
I’d say being inventive with vegan ingredients to achieve interesting flavours and textures. I really like to put my own spin on Indian snack recipes. Like recently, I added buckwheat and sunflower seeds into my aloo chaat, which really works with the traditional toppings and chutneys. For me, the key is delicious street food which is mindful of nutrition. How different is it being involved day to day in

The Live Lounge The Live Lounge are Yorskhire’s premier acoustic trio. Based in Saltaire, the band is made up of Michaela Glover (lead vocals, cajon, percussion and bass guitar), Howard Nash (electric violin) and Stu Partridge (guitar). They play covers of classic (and sometimes not so classic) pop and rock songs from across the decades up to current chart hits specialising in beautiful and unusual arrangements.
26
How did the band come about, did you know each other previously? The band is very well established, having started in 2011, when Howard, Michaela and the band’s first guitarist met at an open mic in Thackley. Playing along with each other for just a couple of songs, we all realised there was an exciting and different sound and we recorded our first EP soon after and started live performances on a serious scale Who are your musical influences? Probably too many and varied to mention as the band members are different ages with very different musical backgrounds, but there’s everything in there from jazz and classical to Radiohead, Beatles, and Cranberries. If you come and hear the band play live, you’ll understand how those influences come together in weird and wonderful ways!
Upcoming Gigs Saturday 1 June
What’s the most memorable gig you’ve ever played? We’ve been lucky to play weddings and other engagements at some of the most prestigious venues in the North and Midlands, including Ripley and Hazlewood Castles, Carlton Towers and Brinkburn Abbey, but the Cavern Club in Liverpool was probably the most memorable. Appropriately we played the ‘Live Lounge Stage’ for an international Tourism and Music conference – McCartney had played a ‘homecoming gig’ there a week or so previously so it felt very special What’s your favourite song to perform? Up until recently we would have said either Creep by Radiohead or Zombie by the Cranberries, but we’ve been working on Toxic by Brittney Spears recently and it is definitely up there
Tyersal Club Sunday 2 June Fanny’s Ale House Sunday 9 June Copper Beach Club Sunday 16 June Saltaire Brewery Saturday 22 June The Mill, Baildon Friday 28 June
What are your plans for 2019? We’ve got a pretty busy calendar of weddings, birthdays and other engagements but there’s always room for more! When we’re not doing those though, we love playing all the local venues that do so much to support live music. We’ve got gigs at Salt Cellar 18/5, 28/6, 26/7, Fannys Ale House 2/6, Saltaire Bandstand 4/8, and more in Baildon and other places. Details on website and facebook

Music Highlights
The Soapgirls
5 July, Nightrain
Armed with unforgettable melodies and catchy choruses, The SoapGirls energy, rawness and authenticity live, has earned a formidable reputation. Performing internationally and continuously since 2015, these fearless French born sisters Millie and Mie, have slayed critics and earned a global dedicated group of followers known as the ‘The SoapSuds’, some of who follow the band across the UK and Europe.
Following the band’s inception in London, UK in 1984 – originally as The Choirboys, then The Queerboys, before settling on the less controversial name of The Quireboys – there followed 6 years of hard graft and personnel changes before the inevitable happened – a UK number 2 album.
The Slambovian Circus of Dreams 4 July, Black Dyke Mills Heritage Venue New York City based band The Slambovian Circus of Dreams have a unique sound that is at once familiar yet almost impossible to pigeon hole taking in all that is good in folk, country and Americana with a twist of Pink Floyd flavouring. Well know as a touring band throughout the North Eastern States the band’s eclectic stage presence is fast gaining them a worldwide following. 28
The Quireboys
14 June, The Underground, Bradford
Despite supporting a certain Guns N’ Roses at the legendary Hammersmith Odeon in London it was 1990’s A Bit of What You Fancy that brought the band to the attention of the public at large, and featured founder member Spike on vocals and new recruit Guy Griffin on guitar.
