Portraits from the Roles We Play exhibition, coming to the Kirkgate Centre later in the year
Portraits of life a look ahead to a series of thoughtprovoking photography exhibitions at the kirkgate centre this summer BY jenny zigzag

owner, standing outside his newly modernised premises one day. Later I learnt he was planning to sell the business when he retired and with his consent I decided to photograph the last year of the salon. My first impression inside was that it was a fine example of late modern décor from the late seventies and early eighties.
ost of us take photographs today. It’s a medium available to us all in some form or another. Let’s share those photos and share our views of life! Back in January Vick from the Kirkgate Centre contacted me to ask whether I would like to be involved in organising a photography exhibition involving local people. I didn’t realise that it would basically be two of us organising it and that it would soon end up with all sorts of offshoots.
“As the work has progressed not only have I had the chance to acknowledge the hairdresser’s skill and expertise, I’ve also got to know most of his clients – over a hundred of them now. This body of work has become a record of a particular place and passing era. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to get to know Ken and his clientele. They’ve been truly inspirational for me.”
It’s been a very steep learning curve and a lot of hard work. However, with the support of the Kirkgate Centre staff, it’s coming together. We’re taking photography out of institutions and into everyday life, bringing the gallery to the people. It’ll be like having a picture on your wall at home, a backdrop to the centre’s activities.
Also currently on the walls are photographic self-portraits by members of the Older People’s Day Service at Kirkgate. The photos reveal the fun this characterful group had in taking their self-portraits with local artist Caro Blount Shah. Great photos with lovely personalities shining through.
The Salon exhibition, currently on show, features some of the loyal customers of the Kenmore Salon in Toller Lane, run by Bradford’s Ken Moore. The portraits were taken by Nudrat Afza before the salon closed down in 2012 when Ken retired.
Then from 11 July to 16 October the Wide Angle exhibition will take over. This exhibition grew from the idea of involving local people using a wide variety of photography. 14 local people are exhibiting work on the theme of the four elements - Fire, Water, Air and/ or Earth, or non-digital work made using the
Nudrat’s interest in the Kenmore Salon came from growing up in Manningham, and passing it everyday on the bus to school. Nudrat explains, “I can remember seeing Ken, the

and the Festival put on a day school about the founding of the village. The Salt family used the occasion to reunite 22 of their members, covering four generations. Oldest member Denys Salt, 85 at the time and only recently deceased, was to become an annual visitor to, and indeed a participant in, the Festival. Nick Salt was conscripted to be one of the judges at the mini-beer festival run by Bradford CAMRA in the York Room of Victoria Hall. The Festival was also to give birth to the Arts Trail, which eventually chose to declutter September and make Saltaire a busy destination in spring.
Another memorable highlight was the Continental Street Market– stunning in its novelty at that time, today a feature we take for granted. Bradford Markets’ Nirmal Bassi took on the task, still does, and signed up enough stalls to fill the central section of Victoria Road. They arrived on a very grey Thursday afternoon, some stallholders questioning the reason for being there – ‘nobody around’, ‘not a city centre’ etc. As they packed up on Sunday evening they were heard saying in several accents ‘See you next year’. And the gala in the Park, organised by Bradford Council, proved under warm blue skies that if you put something good on in Saltaire - on a weekend the Bradford public will roll up in their numbers.
The first Festival was a great success in bringing Saltaire folk and organisations together, and it raised the profile of Saltaire locally and way beyond - as far as a two-page Guardian spread. One or two residents were not entirely happy with this crowded event. But thousands were, and continue to be. This is to the credit of those who year on year put their back into running it. We just had to do it again.

T
he Annual Charity Tennis Tournament at Victoria Mills returns this month and is set to be bigger than ever. Promising a full day of activities and entertainment, the Salts Mill Road venue will transform into a family fun day with everyone welcome. VMbledon was started in 2013 following the tragic death of Hayley McDermott from a heart attack at 27. Her father David organised the very first VMbledon event with family and friends to great success, with everyone turning out in full support. David is hoping to move attention from Wimbledon to the tennis court at Victoria Mills (hence VMbledon), where he lives. This year will follow on from the fantastic day in 2013, not only with the tennis tournament, but also family events such as boules and chess along with traditional favorites like one-legged races and sack races. VMbledon will take place in the beautiful grounds of Victoria Mills on Saturday 4 July

BY daniel kirk-hall from 12pm onwards, organised by David McDermott and fellow residents plus the new owners of the VM Lounge, Bar & Bistro.
The new owners of VM Lounge, Daniel and Erica Hall, say, “We’re really excited about the day and it’s for such a worthy cause, a positive day for families to have fun in honor of Haley and a fitting tribute for the McDermott family. We hope residents and anyone from the Saltaire community can come along to enjoy themselves.” American-themed fancy dress will be welcomed as the event falls on American Independence Day, and the evening will end with live music in the VM Lounge plus a DJ until midnight. All the day’s events will raise funds for Airedale General Hospital’s maternity ward and their child bereavement unit. Anyone wanting to find out more about playing at, spectating or supporting VMBLEDON should visit the VMbledon Facebook page or call VM Lounge on 01274 592078.

Join the club saltaire book club offers a vibrant and friendly environment for avid readers By david ford

ook Clubs are a growing and vibrant part of the book scene. They’re springing up around the country wherever there are more than one or two people who want to talk about reading and about books. I started Saltaire Bookshop in August 2007 with the idea that it would be a bookshop that engaged its readers, involved them with talking about books, gave readers the opportunity to meet writers and meet and talk with other readers. Our club meets on the first Wednesday of each month, at 7pm.
the Nazis in Vienna. Our evenings are lively but if people haven’t anything particular to say about a specific book that’s fine – no need to feel obliged to contribute every time! You don’t have to read the book either, just enjoy the flow of conversation! We always welcome new people. Fresh perspectives and different views are always sought. No point everyone having the same view about a book! It works really well if some people love it and some hate it. It creates a lively debate.
Between six and a dozen people meet at every Book Club, with people either coming along each time or dipping in and out, depending on whether they have a particular interest in a book or whether they have the time on a particular month. Needless to say discussion doesn’t just involve the book in hand. It leads us to talk around the subject, and what’s exciting is the breadth of experience and knowledge. For instance, when we talked about The Hare With The Amber Eyes one of our members related how her late husband had been a refugee from
If you’re interested in coming along, just turn up on a first Wednesday in the month or contact David or Vanessa at the bookshop. Previously I’d trained in classical singing, and when I found community choirs and the natural voice network it was like a breath of fresh air. Now as a natural voice practitioner, I believe that singing is our birthright and that everyone’s voice is unique to themselves. I love Monday nights and always come away buzzing and on a high.”
We believe that everyone has a voice and can sing, so we have no auditions - take note, Gareth Malone! People sing where their voice feels most comfortable. Our repertoire includes pop songs, world songs, and songs of celebration, peace and freedom. We usually start the night off with simple rounds and then move on to more “I believe complex four-part harmonies. that singing Lots of our repertoire is taught using natural voice method, an aural tradition of call and response. Although we always provide words and sometimes music is available, it’s not essential that you read music, just follow the dots up and down. Why do we sing? Because we love it! It allows us to express our joy, celebration, even our sorrow. Never worrying if our voice is good enough, we just open our mouths and sing. Singing has many positive benefits, it raises our confidence and improves our health – and is a fantastic way of making new friends.

We have a very active social side to the choir and frequently enjoy nights out - bowling, cinema, karaoke, walking, theatre, eating out, and going to the pub after choir. We also have an annual residential weekend away, which is great fun and a good way to get to know others in the choir. Bradford Voices love to sing in their local community and often busk at local events such as Saltaire Arts Trail, Saltaire Sing, part of the Saltaire festival, and the Peace Fair in Victoria Hall and the Bandstand in Roberts Park. We also look forward each year to the annual Community Choir event, this year to be held in lovely Whitby.
And we’re delighted to say that this year we performed at the One City, Many Voices event as part of Bradford Festival and hosted by Bradford Festival Choral Society. Very often whilst we’re busking we pass round a bucket for our adopted charity Water Aid, and this year we’re very proud to have raised enough to pay for two toilets as part of the twinning toilet scheme. We meet on Monday evenings from 7pm to 9pm during school term-times at Saltaire Methodist Church, Saltaire Road, Saltaire. Visit www.bradfordvoices.org.uk for contact details, then come along! ne of the highlights of this year’s Saltaire Festival in September is undoubtedly the main stage event, Bands In The Park. Having grown from a small stage on the Caroline Street car park it now occupies pride of place in the idyllic surroundings of Roberts Park.

The Saltaire Festival main stage is expected to draw huge crowds once again this September
what you’ll get as we welcome one of the most exciting dance bands around..The 309s! With a mix of western swing, jive and Americana you’ll see why they are in constant demand wherever good time music is wanted. And check out their clothes too. Yessiree, a fine and dandy sight indeed! During the band turnaround on the main stage the atmosphere will be kept cooking on the newly refurbished Bandstand, where the stars of the future can be seen and heard keeping us all in the festival spirit, albeit under the watchful eye of Sir Titus Salt whose statue stands imperiously overlooking proceedings from his vantage point on the promenade. If only we could look beyond those dark saturnine features and glimpse a smile of approval. What would he make of all this joviality? Well, as long as he likes classic pop, soul, blues and funk he’d love the next act on the main stage. Ladies and gentlemen let’s hear it for
The Ruby Stone Sound Collective! Fronted by the enigmatic Dawn Stebbings and backed by four of the tightest musicians on the circuit, they really know how to put on a show and get those festival feet moving. Closing the show on the Saturday we’ll have one of the most dynamic, outrageous and charismatic bands ever to prowl a stage.. Craig Brauns. Expect to be rolled, rocked, shaken and shocked by this fabulous three piece who combine cutting edge originals with brilliant versions of classic rock and blues. And guess what? They’re acoustic. A fitting finale to Saturday’s show. In next month’s issue we’ll meet the Man Behind The Sound and get the lowdown on the fantastic acts appearing on the main stage on the Sunday. Final word from Rob Watkins, “We thought last year’s show would be hard to beat..but whisper it quietly.... we might just have done it.”

The Record Club 25th july, kirkgate centre
By tony painter
This month the Record Club goes all Merseybeat in the Kirkgate Centre! On Saturday 25 July we’ll be enjoying some of the finest music to come out of Liverpool in exactly the way it was intended – on VINYL! Obviously we’ll be looking back at some of the legendary groups and solo artists of the sixties such as The Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers and Cilla Black. But we’ll also make sure we get to listen to some of the more recent music produced by various scousers over time such as Teardrop Explodes, Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Dead Or Alive. We may manage to sample some Zutons, Atomic Kitten and Sugarbabes and even possibly Frankie Vaughan and a few of the many sea shanties that namecheck the illustrious city. As usual, we can’t predict everything because a BIG part of the evening is based on the records that people bring in with them. The
30
more people come, and the more stuff they bring, the better the evening! So, scout around your spare room for that old cardboard box of singles, or even search out the handmade crocodile leather record box you’ve not looked at for decades. Sort out some of your favourite tracks that link with Liverpool and the Mersey, no matter how tenuously. Bring them in and we’ll try to give them a spin! The Record Club meets, mostly, on the last Saturday of each month in the Kirkgate Centre from 8pm and entry is by optional donation. The atmosphere is relaxed, with a bar and snacks available. Anyone interested can get more details and make their own contribution to the conversations at www. recordclub.org www.facebook.com/therecordclub or @ therecordclub on Twitter.
Cabaret Saltaire 17th july, caroline street club
By sue denim
Friday 17 July sees the welcome return of Cabaret Saltaire to the Caroline Club. If you’ve not managed to catch any of these yet - and I have to ask why not - they’ve been running for over four years now. Make this a must-see for a local night out. And if you’ve never stepped inside the Caroline Club concert room you’re in for an extra treat. Often described, and rightly so, as the jewel of Saltaire, the venue is a step back in time to the days of clubland and the heyday of variety, complete with its own glitterball, organist (Mike ‘Snakefingers’ Nicholas), a star dressing room and optional bingo for those so inclined. Even the drinks are historically priced with a pint of bitter coming in around the £2.50 mark, and cheaper if you become a member (£8 per year).
meat raffle (apologies to the vegetarians out there). This month’s helping promises to hit the comedy mark with acts such as Cockeyed Kenneth (a ventriloquy act with a difference), regular funnyman Billy Button, Bradford’s own rising stand-up star Jane Steele, a pint-size version of Johnny Cash, local performance poet Maggie Chilvers, billed as the Bard of Saltaire, a scandalous dance troupe, local singer-songwriter Vanessa Maria (pictured), spotted by Steve whilst she was busking her own songs in Bradford, and finally Full English Breakfast, a top dance band to finish the night off. This is the first of three monthly cabarets to be staged at the club. The next will be on 21 August with legendary blues guitarist Steve Phillips and his Rough Diamonds headlining, then a Cabaret Saltaire Festival Special on 18 September with the welcome return of the Cajun Aces and the world champion accordionist Pearl Fawcett-Adriano.
Hosted by Squinty McGinty - aka Steve Huison - Cabaret Saltaire manages to pull together an eclectic mix of musical comedy and variety, ranging from the brilliant to the downright absurd and including the obligatory

The Railsplitters @the live room 14th june, Caroline street club
By Keith Belcher
“Is the standard here usually that high?” A question overheard at Saltaire between sets of The Railsplitters sixteenth gig of 21 dates in 23 days on their first UK tour. Formed in 2012, The Railsplitters are currently Colorado residents. Their music has bluegrass roots but goes way beyond the bluegrass genre. On stage they jokingly list the various offshoots they encompass Newgrass, Popgrass, Sambagrass, Rockgrass, Countrygrass, Doo-Wop Grass, and as one person in the audience shouted out “Laughing Grass”. Guitarist and lead singer Lauren Stovall, described as ‘the tiniest person on stage’, has a huge voice delivering powerful and very soulful vocals. All members take on vocal leads as well as providing great harmonies. Dusty Rider (his real name!) is a seriously mean banjopicker with licks up there with the best. Peter Sharpe matches him on mandolin throughout. Striking moves and bass playing from upright bassist Leslie Ziegler and the great fiddler Christine King complete the very talented lineup. Opening with an upbeat Sweet Little Miss from their new CD The Faster It Goes gave
32
the audience a good taste of the treats ahead, with great vocals from Dusty and Lauren and instrumental licks from all members. Spray followed, a bluegrass instrumental from The Railsplitters, their first CD. In true bluegrass style all members got to show their individual skills throughout this tune. Most of their material is original. A notable cover in the first set was Buck Owens Act Naturally, given a great revamp. The show was well-paced, with great vocals, driving rhythms and dance tunes and slower delicate instrumentals such as The Estuary. The second set opened with Please Don’t Leave Me Any More Darling, a beautiful acapella five-part harmony, and sambagrass instrumental Goosetown followed. Jackson, a song about Lauren’s home town, finished the night, which flew by all too quickly for a very enthusiastic and receptive audience. Answer to question at the start. A resounding “Yes”. Saltaire standards are high and getting higher as both The Live Room and Saltaire Live shows put Saltaire firmly on both audience and artists’ maps.

The Live Room Presents...Dick Gaughan 8pm, Caroline Street Club
As the composer of Bradford Born n’ Raised, Brighouse On Saturday Night, Peter Brook’s Paintings, The Beerbelly Blues and Into The Sun, Roger Davies is one of today’s most engaging singer-songwriters. One of the truly great folk voices allied to a dazzling guitar technique, Gaughan is well known for his forthright and oft-expressed political views and has never been attracted by the current vogue of consensual, pragmatic and equivocating politics.
