Who said silence is golden? an interview with the people behind shipley’s popular electronic music night golden cabinet BY mike farren

I

only recently began to realise what a remarkable thing Golden Cabinet is. The monthly music slot at Shipley’s Kirkgate Centre with the distinctive horse logo initially passed me by. I haven’t had my finger on the pulse of underground music for many years and I knew none of the names of the bands. When I discussed Golden Cabinet with someone involved in the local music scene, his sharp intake of breath and verdict, “They’re hardcore!” seemed ominous.

sees him cast as a spokesperson. He is at pains to point out that Golden Cabinet is a team effort, but as he is my interviewee I can only apologise if I end up reinforcing the impression.

As for the team effort, Anth makes the homemade vegan cakes that feature at all the gigs, as well as handling PR and the accounts, Mark does projections at the gigs, Nick makes the posters, “..which are printed on an obsolete German printing press”, Richard However, the buzz about Golden Cabinet brings experience to bear from his day job in became impossible to ignore, and when I website design, development and marketing, realised that a gig they had via social media. Between organised – Charles Hayward them, as Anth puts it, “We presents Anonymous Bash book the bands and the DJs, “It’s a – featured the drummer and move furniture around community (Hayward) from a post-punk both before and after the gig band (This Heat) I had admired so if you came in next day event. The back in the day, I decided to you’d never know that 150 rave Kirkgate take the plunge. I immediately heads had been going nuts.” Centre is the loved the music, but even more so, I loved the event, Richard explains how the thing that and the sheer incongruity of group came together: “I’d brings it all it taking place in a community known Nick and Anth for years centre – even the increasingly from the punk scene. Mark, together and indispensable Kirkgate Centre. I would meet at gigs a lot. it wouldn’t One of the reasons Mark was I’ve been to another gig, asked to join was because he work and will attend the last of knows more about music than anywhere the current run – Vessel, on the rest of us. A lot more!” Saturday 6 June. But since else.” experiencing Golden Cabinet The scene in question was first hand, I’ve been intrigued the hardcore punk movement to find out how this strange and wonderful based at Bradford’s 1 in 12 Club. This was phenomenon came about. what brought Richard to university here from Liverpool. “I moved over to Bradford Golden Cabinet is Anth Palmer, Mark when I was 18, mainly because of the 1 in Leese, Nick Loaring and Richard Claxton. I 12 Club. I used to come over a lot. I’d hitch correspond with the first three, but due to over and there used to be a lot of punk stuff the logistical challenge of bringing all four that went on. In the punk and hardcore together, I only speak to Richard, a brightly- world, Bradford was a very big scene.” clad, endlessly enthusiastic Shipley resident, who finds himself slightly embarrassed that As part of the 1 in 12 Club experience Anth his friendly and talkative demeanour often and Nick promoted gigs there between 2007

7

and 2011. “We came from the DIY punk background of basically doing it yourself,” he tells me. “This not only encompassed arranging individual gigs but booking tours, catering for bands, arranging floor space for bands after gigs and promoting the ethos that meant a promoter was involved in every aspect.” This involved booking several bands who would later appear at Golden Cabinet, but the DIY ethos – the feeling that the bands, the fans and the promoters are all in it together – still carries over from the punk scene, with Nick saying, “I never saw myself as a ‘promoter’ just someone who wanted people to have a great time.” Despite the wealth of musical experience and sheer immersion, the idea of putting bands on came from Kirkgate Centre manager Paul Barrett, someone the group clearly esteems highly (Richard describes him as a legend). The Ante-Art exhibition held there in 2012-3 involved Nick and featured music each time.

thing is that there was no big plan. We all just fell into place and found our little niches.” A meeting in Anth’s garden came up with the Golden Cabinet name. Anth remembers it as two random words but Richard claims credit for it and for seeing off Anth’s alternative suggestion of Time Is Money. The logo though is definitely Richard’s doing, having been adapted from an Einstürzende Neubauten album.

I ask if there was a definite sense of ambition from the start – the kind that would anticipate the way that Golden Cabinet has consistently punched above its weight in attracting international names. However, this isn’t quite the never saw way Richard remembers things.

“I myself as a ‘promoter’ just someone who wanted people to have a great time.”

Richard picks up the story: “I think that sparked Paul’s thinking. He asked Nick to see if he could do something once a month. Nick realised that was a big ask, so he thought, “Let’s get a gang together to do it.” We really didn’t think about how difficult it was!”

“At the first meeting, we didn’t say, “We want Vatican Shadow!” but we were aiming higher than Paul expected us to. We were going to ask people who are names - the kind of bands we would drive over to Manchester to see. Some of them couldn’t do it, and I think that there was a little bit of ‘What is this Shipley community centre? Is this real?’”

However, many of the bands on their list – such as Pye Corner Audio or Gnod – were instantly into the idea.

There appears to be a certain amount of serendipity in how matters proceeded. Richard continues, “It was Nick who got us together. He realised that me and Anth had experience of doing gigs, but he recognised that Mark’s musical knowledge would be good. We didn’t know that Mark could do videos: that was a surprise to us all. The nice

“So, we were thinking after the first few, ‘What could we go for?’ We just started trying some things. It was a little bit of a fun challenge. The Vatican Shadow thing… I just knew he was going to be in the country at a certain time, so we just chanced it. We are chancers! But that paid off.”

village or town, a lot of people from that village will go, because there’s not a lot happening. If this was in Leeds, you wouldn’t get the local community. It’s a community event. The Kirkgate Centre is the thing that brings it all together and it wouldn’t work anywhere else.”

One factor that intrigued me is the sheer variety of some of the gigs. The second one I attended moved from the folktronica of Magpahi through the noise-rock of Hey Colossus to the techno of headliner Karen Gwyer. According to Anth this is very much a matter of policy, “We set out with Golden Cabinet to have an eclectic range that expresses who we are individually and as a collective.” Richard agrees, adding, “We’ve got varied tastes and cover a lot of genres. Part of it is looking at a gig and saying why don’t we just put in a band that nobody else would put in as support?” He cites a single isolated case of a disgruntled techno fan, unhappy at having to wait for his music. “Every other person has always gone with it, especially local Shipley people.”

Ultimately, this embedding of the Golden Cabinet into local life seems to be the real achievement, with the quality and daring of the music as a massive bonus. It’s not easy, though, and the team will shortly take their first break for eighteen months. Richard, as father of a young daughter, resolved that Golden Cabinet would not eat into parental time, but that simply means that he transacts Golden Cabinet business after the family have gone to bed. The group are taking three months off, with no plans yet for the autumn.

This leads into a very important question – why does Golden Cabinet work specifically in Shipley? Richard’s view is, “If you play a small

gig but also the screening of Salad Days, a film documentary about the 1980s Washington DC punk rock scene. Again this was just a case of taking a chance and finding that it came off, and once more the local element is to the fore. “We’re doing it with the Shipley Film Society, and I think it’s a nice thing to try and help promote them as well,” says Richard. Whether they return with more of the same or with further departures like the film night,

10

it’s great to know they’ll return. Groundbreaking music is thriving in the area, with Fuse Art Space, Delius Centre for the Arts and Threadfest, but Golden Cabinet shines brightly in that company. Long may they fly the flag for Shipley! Vessel plays the Golden Cabinet on Saturday 6 June at 7PM, supported by Some Truths & Ahrkh. Salad Days screens on Saturday 11 July at 7PM.

Jollification and Jubilees saltaire united reformed church prepares to host a village fete with a rich history

There’ll be a wide variety of church and charity stalls, children’s games, dance and musical entertainment in the grounds of Saltaire United Reformed Church on Saturday 27 June as the Saltaire Fete returns for another year. Musical entertainment will be provided by Ukulele Henry, Hammonds Saltaire Band, The Peace Dance Academy, Bingley Dancers, Glinda the Good Witch, and The Balloon Lady. While there will also be a pop-up café, donkey rides and tombola to keep visitors more than happy. The first Saltaire fete was held in 1977 to celebrate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee, although it was known as the Jubilee Jollification back then. It was marked by a procession from the top of Albert Road, through the village and down to the church grounds. Round about 1980 the event was rebranded as Saltaire Revels and became a much bigger enterprise with different themes each year. There was a Revels Queen, chosen from the children in Sunday School, who was paraded with her attendants from Saltaire Roundabout (as it was then) on the back of a wagon (actually

13

BY Janet Clark a coal lorry, cleaned up and kindly lent to the church). On arrival in the church grounds she officially declared the Revels open, with varied entertainment and stalls much as it is today.

In 2002 the Queen’s Jubilee was celebrated with a special Summer Fete with the Golden Jubilee logo resplendent over the Church gates, and in 2005 the sixtieth anniversary of the end of World War 2 was remembered by the Saltaire 40s Fayre with all the stallholders in 1940s costumes. There have also been medieval and Victorian fetes and swing time and country & western themes. The popularity of the event has meant another name change to Saltaire Fete, as it is now considered by local people one of the mustvisit events of the year. Over a thousand people visit the Fete each year, with something for everyone, both young and old – a real good afternoon out. Photographs of previous fetes and other church events can be found in the Church Events photograph albums which will be available to view in the church.

Making some noise how a group of like-minded music lovers have come together to share their skills and write music

f the Shipley Music Appreciation and Songwriters’ Hub sounds like a mouthful, it is, but in a good way. The group came together in January 2015 and aims to give a voice to musicians, singers and songwriters from Saltaire, Shipley and beyond. And if it still takes too long to say, you can always call them S.M.A.S.H.

performance is one of the reasons for forming the new group, though Jack first put up a small ad for something like this a few years ago. At that time the only person to reply was fellow Saltaire resident Hilary McMullen. Hilary is now not only a stalwart of S.M.A.S.H., but has even enrolled her brother as a long-distance member, although he lives in South Wales.

Founder Jack Wright was a Saltaire resident for four years until moving a little way out of the area eighteen months ago. It was during his time in Saltaire that he returned to his youthful love of playing the guitar. “Having played guitar in my teens and early twenties,” he tells me, “I never actually got to perform in front of anybody until two and a half years ago.”

Hilary too has found live performance trying, despite having been involved in music and songwriting for a number of years. She was in a band called Washburn Valley that played traditional Irish and Scottish songs with some bluegrass around local pubs. Though she was a prominent member, taking on vocals and percussion, she says, “That was easier because you had others to help you through and cover if you forgot words.” However, looking now to develop as a solo singer and songwriter, she finds that “When you’re on your own every mistake is amplified and if they’re your own songs then it’s more personal.” About S.M.A.S.H. she says, “Jack has created a very supportive atmosphere and I hope I’ll get better through the exposure. I also enjoy collaborating and being with others who’re interested in playing and creating music.”

“My hope is that someone will come along and meet the Lennon to their McCartney.. or at least the Chas to their Dave! ”

Jack has performed at open mic spots and worked up to being a featured artist in a recent session in Bradford’s Glyde House. “Performing is something I thought I could never do,” he admits, “but I’ve worked hard to overcome my fears and – though still nerveracking – when it goes well it gives me great pleasure. Of course when it goes badly it’s horrendous!” This notion of the nerveracking nature of

14

Shipley Music Appreciation and Songwriters’ Hub members outside Saltaire Methodist Church Hall Jack sums up the project, saying, “S.M.A.S.H. is a music appreciation club for musicians, singers and songwriters of all abilities.” He has hopes that the future may even see members performing as individuals or ensembles at events and festivals.

Jack is very focused on supporting fledgling performers and giving them an environment to improve in and to meet other musicians – but his ambitions do stretch a little higher. “My hope is that someone will come along and meet the Lennon to their McCartney.. or at least the Chas to their Dave!” he suggests.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced musician, S.M.A.S.H. provides a supportive environment to play music, try out new things, meet and collaborate with like minds – and hear some great songs!

The structure of meetings is fairly open but there’s encouragement for people to perform their songs. In order to prompt the writing of songs each meeting draws an idea from the Bag Of Random Ideas for Songs (B.O.R.I.S. – Wright loves his acronyms!) as a songwriting challenge for the next meeting. The session I attended produced some excellent songs on the subject of boys’ names, while the theme of elements was proposed for the next.

S.M.A.S.H. meets on the last Monday of the month at Saltaire Methodist Church Hall, between 7 and 9:30 pm. You can find more information, and some examples of songs, on their Facebook page – search for Shipley Music Appreciation and Songwriters’ Hub.

he Shipley Street Arts Festival launched last year and proved an immediate hit with audiences, performers and press alike. Against an ever-turbulent backdrop of arts funding and support the Festival is striving to do even better this year, with an extended and varied programme with community engagement at its heart. In their own words, ‘This year, the Festival is going in for the krill!’ “For the Festival’s second year we’ve embraced the theme of rivers and canals,” explained John Lambert, founder and creative director of Shipley-based Q20 Theatre, who deliver the three day event. “Alongside the many canal-side activities taking place across the weekend we’re looking forward to returning to the hub of last year’s festival, Market Square. We’ve got interactive workshops, music, dance, international performance and a 50 foot inflatable whale, hence the whale puns.”

“Circo Rum Ba Ba are a perfect example of the calibre of act we’re bringing to Shipley, ”

“Circo Rum Ba Ba are a perfect example of the calibre of act we’re bringing to Shipley,” says John. “It sounds like exaggeration but to see this sort of show, for free, in your own town, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Genre-bending theatre company Pif-Paf, and Urban Canvas, a group of modern mural painters and professional graffiti artists, complete an impressive trio of Festival headliners. Pif-Paf ’s Planetary is a physical theatre show that mixes movement, aerial acrobatics, theatre and Russian swing on a brand new spinning stage. Urban Canvas are passionate about regeneration and provide a fresh and innovative approach to site-specific art that brightens our towns and cities.

2015 also sees the introduction of a £3,000 commission by Shipley Street Arts Festival and Saltaire Festival to create a new work which celebrates the two towns. Chosen from an impressive shortlist the inaugural commission has been awarded to 2Faced Dance. Their new production, KAPOW, takes a fun and absurd look at the meeting of three superheroes as they struggle to cope with the impact that modern life has on their powers and mission to fight crime. It will tour internationally after premiering in Shipley.

delivering craft workshops on barge boats over the festival weekend. Continuing the watery theme, Q20 have teamed up with the Hydro Citizen Project and BCB Radio to engage with the local community by collecting memories, stories and reflections people have about the canal. A reclaimed rowing boat will be decorated with the collated stories and displayed as part of the Festival, culminating in a ritual procession and launch of the boat. The stories on the base of the boat will wash off as it’s rowed down the canal, with the memories returning to the water from whence they came.

As a community festival, championing and supporting the local area are the cornerstones of the Festival’s deliverance and, together with a community Festival Fringe, workshops, demonstrations and family activities, the Festival is also involved with an additional commission with local arts group Sponge Tree,

And with such an impressive lineup, it’s hard to imagine any stories about this year’s festival being anything other than over-whale-mingly good.

Shipley in bloom LOCAL RESIDENTS SHARE THEIR ENTHUSIASM FOR HORTICULTURE IN SHIPLEY OPEN GARDENS 2015

W

ith summer fast approaching and spring looking well and truly established, the plants, shrubs, trees and flowers are starting to take shape for another fabulously floral year ahead. It’s usually around the beginning of April, going into May, when the fresh green shoots of the perennial borders begin to emerge from their dormant winter slumber and our thoughts of colourful expectation collide with plans for the Open Gardens. Normally held in either June or July, whilst vibrant garden splendour is running riot and the hope of a dry sunny weekend is more than a vague possibility. Yet, the uncomplicated proposal of meandering from garden to garden sharing ideas and plant knowledge is really quite simple and a great way of meeting like-minded enthusiasts, or merely a way to take a leisurely gaze at a variety of different gardens. The open garden scheme has run for many years in conjunction with St Peter’s Church, is

20

BY Howard Wilson totally non-profit and has helped raise funds for many local and national charities. It was previously organised by Pam Lofthouse who was heavily involved in gardening throughout her career, including teaching horticulture at Shipley College. Sadly though, Pam passed away last year and we are eager to do her proud by dedicating 2015 to her name.

This year there are 15 gardens taking part over the two days, most offering an assortment of homemade refreshments, some with plant stalls and hopefully all giving the visitor a chance to witness something different in each. So please join us for a bright and blooming and all-consuming pleasurable weekend and we hope you enjoy the passionate and enthusiastic gardens as much as we do taking part. Thank you. Making a splash the leeds liverpool canal becomes a fierce battleground as saltaire hosts the lord mayor’s dragon boat race

By bernie sheehan Aspire and the many other teams made for a day of fun and excitement, complemented by the festival atmosphere in the rest of the park. Live music from the cream of local bands and musicians on the bandstand and in the marquees accompanied the foods from every corner of the world with their delicious aromas wafting through the trees. Indeed the Lord Mayor of Hamm, visiting from Germany, seemed particularly taken with the cuisine on offer and could be seen enjoying one of the delicious homemade pies - some compensation perhaps for The Hamm Elephants’ brave second place in the race.

oberts Park hosted the very first Bradford Lord Mayor’s Dragon Boat Race on Saturday 9 May. The event featured 22 teams from across the region competing to raise money for both the Marie Curie Hospice in Bradford and Make It Happen, a charity providing grants for small groups and organisations throughout Bradford. When heavy overnight rain caused the River Aire to rise the intrepid crews took to the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, and after two exciting rounds of racing The Appleton Crusaders just beat the strongly fancied Hamm Elephants in a thrilling finish.

Brilliantly organised and well-run on the day everyone associated with the event should be justifiably proud of their efforts. Perhaps the event could be summed up in the words of a woman from Middlesbrough who had come to Saltaire with her family for a day trip, “We were expecting a good day out, but what we got was exceptional.”

Most of the competing teams were novices at rowing but after brief instruction took to the water like seasoned mariners, thrilling the many hundreds of spectators and supporters who had turned out to watch the fun. here’s no doubt that we live in a stunning area, with beautiful countryside butting up against urban settlements. Baildon Moor, Shipley Glen, Hirst Wood, Buck Woods, Northcliffe Park and Woods, St Ives Estate and more - all complemented by the canal and River Aire. The settlements have characteristic architecture: Saltaire village and park, Shipley canal-side dwellings and market square, Baildon’s Potted Meat Stick, Bingley Parish Church, Cottingley Town Hall and many more.

Consequently it is more important than ever to be ‘Friends’! With reduced funding to public services it’s imperative that residents work against the many pressures on our local landscape, environment and heritage. At the Celebrating Our Community Heritage event at St Paul’s Church, Kirkgate, Shipley on Saturday, 4 July at least 25 ‘Friends’, local history and heritage groups and other visitors will celebrate and also consider how they can work better to safeguard this heritage.

Against this backdrop it is sad that some people are careless about our environment including dumping tyres and building rubble, leaving dog dirt, stealing stone and letting

A new chapter the saltaire village society look to the future after over 30 years of community action

VS was formed in 1984, two years before Salts Mill closed down and the year the train station re-opened. The society was at the forefront of community protests against the proposed Aire Valley Bypass extension which would have run through the valley bottom near Coach Road. Another early aim was the collection of Saltaire artefacts and memorabilia which have since been donated to the Saltaire Archive. In 1987 under the leadership of Clive Woods, a local historian who ran Falcon Books on Victoria Road, SVS successfully bid for a nomination for World Heritage status and after many years of planning and preparation Saltaire was chosen as a World Heritage Site in 2001. SVS members were instrumental in launching the first Saltaire Festival in 2003 and more recently supported the establishment of the Wash House Gardens and learning networks.

Firstly - to stay as we are, with all Saltaire residents able to be a member or join the committee. Secondly - to become a designated body, which means that Bradford Council would have to consult us on any “Our aim planning matters that affect is to act as Saltaire. SVS members purchase the large Christmas tree in front of Victoria Hall and arrange the popular Christmas lights switch on and carol singing event. We also run the Saltaire Connected event to bring some of the many local groups together to network and attract new members. Our aim is to act as a voice for the people of Saltaire and to keep them informed about anything likely to be important to

All are welcome to our meetings on the last Thursday of each month at 7.30pm at Caroline’s Club. The AGM will be on 24 September to move these options forward. A meeting of local groups and individuals is being organised in the next month or two to look at working better together and sharing resources, knowledge and manpower. This will be advertised as soon as the full details have been arranged. Hope to see you there!

A helping hand it’s national volunteers’ week this month and what better way to mark it than joining the saltaire festival team?

J

BY Julie hemmings

une 1 to 7 is national Volunteers’ Week, when all things volunteer-wise will be celebrated across the country – saying a big thank you to those hardy souls who get out and about to help others in so many different ways. Here at Saltaire Festival we know only too well the importance of volunteers – without their efforts the Festival would not take place each year. A great bunch of dedicated people give their time throughout the year to fundraise for, plan, organise and deliver Saltaire Festival, and make it the success it is. To help ensure this year’s Festival is as good as ever we’re looking for more enthusiastic and dedicated people to help us deliver the wide range of events. Our full programme will be announced shortly.

few of the ways in which you can become involved, for however much time you can spare. Volunteering to help with Saltaire Festival is an enjoyable and rewarding way to give back to your community and a great way to make new friends and contacts.

“By spending a few hours of your time you could make a world of difference to the work we do and also be part of a hugely popular event.”

Is this a role you could carry out? If so, great - just what we’re looking for to join our small but perfectly formed Festival team. We’re always looking to expand our merry tribe of volunteers so I’d like to outline a

By spending a few hours of your time you could make a world of difference to the work we do and also be part of a hugely popular event. This can be just for fun but we do offer accreditation for volunteers young or old who are looking to develop skills and experience to add to their CV and boost their employment prospects.

Planning, fundraising for and delivering the Festival is a yearround task but during the event itself the majority of help is needed for the opening and finale weekends, when activities are happening at locations all around the village as well as in Roberts Park and other venues nearby. And don’t worry - newbies are always teamed up with an experienced helper from the regular team. I began helping out at the Festival like many

other folk, by assisting on the information desk, a crucial focal point during both the opening and closing weekends. Volunteer help is also needed during specific events, such as the family activities during the first weekend – assisting with setting up, giving out leaflets and tickets, as well as the all-important tidying away afterwards. We don’t expect people to stay all day when volunteering – filling in for one or two hours is enough to help us out! The busiest part of the whole 10-day Festival occurs during the finale weekend, when there’s an abundance of events both in the park and the village – many hands certainly

make lighter work during this time. Once again, duties are varied – helping on the Information desk, setting up in the park, and stewarding during specific events as needed. Plenty of volunteers are essential at the end of the day when we tackle the tidying up in Roberts Park – bin bags provided! So, if you love a lanyard or hanker after a high-vis jacket, get in touch! You can find out more by contacting us – volunteers@ saltaire.co.uk or come and meet us in person at one of our information sessions during Volunteers’ Week on June 2 at The Hop, or June 4 at Caroline Street Club. Both sessions start at 7pm and all are welcome.

Get creative this summer an interview with saltaire camp creative organiser sarah-jane mason

What is Saltaire Camp Creative? Saltaire Camp Creative is a non-residential summer camp for children and young people. Camp members will have the opportunity to experiment with a wide range of sometimes unusual materials and explore their creativity in a range of different ways. The camp is rooted in visual and creative arts but will also get members creative in other ways, such as storytelling, spoken and written word, dramatic performances, games and play in addition to more traditional art and craft activities. What will camp members do? Camp members will have the opportunity to be creative in more ways than they can imagine! Each day there’ll be a range of activities to choose from so they can pick what most interests them. There’ll be access to an exciting range of high quality materials and specialist staff to help them realise their ideas. Also, let’s not forget that camp is going to be fun - it provides the opportunity to do things you’ve never done before and a chance to make new friends. What are the benefits? Saltaire Camp Creative not only provides engaging and unusual creative activities for children and young people – that’s just the start of it. Through the workshops, camp members will develop transferable skills such as communication and teamwork and also develop

their personal skills, leaving with improved motivation and increased self-confidence. Throughout the camp they’ll be interacting with other children too, developing their social skills and hopefully making new friends with similar interests. Who can be a camp member? All young people aged 6-16 years with an interest in having fun, making things, getting messy and creating art! And if there are any interested older teens in the village we’re on the hunt for volunteers for the camp – so you can get involved too. There are no adult places at Saltaire Camp Creative this year but it’s in our future plans, so if this would interest you please let us know. How else can I get involved? We’re looking for a number of volunteers (of any age 18+) to help run activities and can also offer work experience to young adults (17-25 years). We’ll need lots of weird and wonderful junk to run our activities so you can get involved by saving cardboard boxes, milk bottle lids, coloured plastic bags and other exciting bits of (washed and clean) trash. Saltaire Camp Creative will run 10am-3pm every Wednesday and Thursday during August at Saltaire Methodist Church. Book a place via SCC@ sarahjanemason.com or phone 07545 372 452.

Dave Vermond & HVH @IRREGULAR ROOTS 13th june, kirkgate centre

By joe grint

We’re delighted to say that on Saturday 13 June Kirkgate Irregular Roots’ final concert before a short summer break will bring us the mighty Dave Vermond and HVH, a five piece band from Otley who have many years of varied musical experience between them. They play a quality mix of blues, country, swing and rock ‘n’ roll, drawing on the great traditions of the past and exploring new ideas. Music is chosen from the works of Hank Williams, Chuck Berry, Bob Dylan, The Grateful Dead, Johnny Cash, Freddie King and a host of other renowned writers. It’s not always the obvious ones either! The band have been known to perform a few of Dave Vermond’s superb original songs too. With a classic line up of Dave Vermond acoustic guitar, vocals, Johnny Hardcastle - electric and slide guitar, Simon Holmes tenor sax, Tim Wybrow - stand-up bass, plus Steve Carter on rootsy percussion, this will be a great chance to see a different aspect of Dave’s musical output to his more familiar

34

solo performances. Support for the evening comes from Andy Aitchison, who accompanies his songs with acoustic guitar and bouzouki. He has supported Waterson-Carthy, Tarras, Matthews’ Southern Comfort and more recently The Dunwells. Of Scottish heritage but Yorkshire-bred his début album is being recorded this year. People have commented on his material being ‘on the verge of Nick Drake meets The Waterboys’ which sounds an intriguing mix to open the evening with! The doors open at 8pm and admission is good value as always at £6 waged and £4 unwaged. We like to think we’re building a reputation for high quality music in a relaxed cabarettype setting - if you haven’t paid a visit why not give us a try? More details available on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/Kirkgateirregularroots (or in our Facebook group) or by following us on Twitter @irregularroots.

Vessel

@golden cabinet 6th june, kirkgate centre By damian jones

The Golden Cabinet evening in Shipley has recently been getting some rave reviews in the national press (Guardian) and well respected music websites (Quietus), and they’re all fully deserved. It just keeps getting better and better.

really excited to be playing Shipley. No doubt it will be a full on set guaranteed to make you move, your mind to be transported elsewhere, and maybe discard some clothing - he has a habit of removing his shirt mid-set... Vessel very rarely plays the UK, and this is a chance to see someone who usually fills large rooms in a small space. I strongly urge you to do so.

Next up is a visit by the amazing electronic musician Vessel on 6 June. Although he might not be a household name, as usual with Golden Cabinet anyone who likes things a bit different will find something of interest.

Supporting are Some Truths and Ahrkh. Some Truths make some amazing modulated synth sounds, from twitchy, ZX-Spectrum noises to more groove-based Vangelis-like soundscapes. Ahrkh is yet another offshoot of Golden Cabinet regulars GNOD. This loopy exploration of electronic brooding drone will get us all nicely warmed up.

Vessel is part of a group of Bristol musicians called Young Echo, and the name fits. Traces of industrial pioneers such as Coil, Throbbing Gristle and even Massive Attack can be heard, but Vessel creates something new out of these elements. Although Vessel has some famous fans he’s

Dead Air Party @recon / pleasure grounds 28th june, Caroline street club

By andy abbott

When you think about it, music is strange. It’s an invisible force - a movement of waves through the air - that joins people together in a collective experience. People bang bits of wood, blow into metal objects, vibrate wires and strings and it creates an atmosphere - a state of things - that those gathered experience all together but interpret in unique ways. Live music is both an internal and external, private and public, shared and personal experience that, when successful, visibly engages people in a similar way but always prompts the question between those gathered: ‘What did you think to that?’. Dead Air Party is a response to some of this. We decided to deconstruct and reconfigure the gig experience so that it resembles something at the crossroads of an intimate live performance, silent disco and participatory dance performance. The band - in this case an instrumental rock duo performing on electronic drums and electric baritone guitar - perform in the middle of the room. They are surrounded by the audience, some of

36

whom have taken part in movement and dance workshops devised by artists Yvonne Carmichael and Bryony Pritchard prior to the event. The audience are supplied with headphones, which is the only way to hear the music that’s being performed. You can tune in and out, join in or spectate as you like. Dead Air Party tries to rediscover that strange excitement of a small scale gig where there is something intangible joining everyone together. In the Dead Air Party the sound waves that connect people are transmitted directly to each individual, which intensifies the experience and blurs the boundaries between the private and collective, absence and presence, and the simulated and the live. Come see, hear and experience it for yourself at Caroline Social Club on Sunday 28 June 28. Doors are at 7pm with tickets limited to the number of headphones available in advance at www.deadairparty.com There’ll also be a workshop in the afternoon. Book a place by emailing deadairparty@gmail.com

Jane Steele quick fire questions

Who are you and what do you do? Actress, writer, secretary, other things.

Can you tell us a bit about the novel you wrote? It’s set in West Yorkshire in the 2320s, in a world where the North is rich because it has water, and the South is poor because it doesn’t. The parliament building has relocated to Ripon and is called Thora Hird House. It’s a dream world for some, a nightmare for others. Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose.

What made you want to try stand-up? In our acting class at N:DAS in Leeds we did a stand up comedy masterclass with Steve Huison. It stemmed from there. I’m terrified, but leaving my comfort zone is a motivator. When is your first show and how are you preparing? My only show will be on 17th July at Cabaret Saltaire. I’m preparing by thinking about what to say and looking at great comics on Youtube. Also I’ve got this bizarre idea that I should exercise. I doubt Jack Dee has the same compulsion but then again he knows what he’s doing.

Any plans to write another? I’ve been writing another since Britpop and should really finish it. But it will be done when it’s done. What’s your relationship with Bradford? Love, flaws and all - both mine and the city’s. Bradford threw her arms around me and said, “Come in lass. I’ve got nothing, but you can have half of it”. That’s not something I will forget in a hurry.

Would it be fair to describe you as something of a wordsmith? Thanks, I’ll have that one. I’ve been described as a lot worse.

Do you have any other projects on the go at the moment? Yes, but I can’t say too much.
