One of the most exclusive luxury hotels in the Mediterranean

Curating a jazz festival nowadays is not always an easy task. In an ever-shifting landscape of blurred genres and crossed borders, it is very easy to lose one’s bearings. Where is that fine line between tradition and innovation? Is this ‘real’ jazz? To what extent can we compromise artistic integrity? Are these questions really important? These are some of the issues that have been haunting me as an artistic director for the past 10 years. I am not sure that I have all the answers to these questions, however I can say that the Malta Jazz Festival is definitely a bastion of good taste and great music.

celebration of one of the most important yet misunderstood art forms of the past century. Jazz is constantly reinventing itself, jazz is tradition, jazz is young and old, jazz is full of contradictions, but jazz is not dead. Every July we are delighted to stage this event, honouring this eminently humane art form. And this year will be a very special edition. In Malta jazz is synonymous with Valletta, and I am privileged to orchestrate a special line-up for the 2018 European Capital of Culture title. It will be one of this year’s highlights and Chick Corea’s presence is particularly significant as it reminds us of when it all started, back at Ta’ Liesse in 1991, when the foundations of Malta’s oldest running festival were laid.

Jazz’s roots are undeniably Afro-American. Jazz however has evolved through the years, alienating itself from its origins and absorbing many different influences. This has created ongoing debates about the real meaning of the word “jazz”, especially among purists. As a festival director, one of my main worries is to present a panorama of the contemporary jazz scene without deviating too much from the soul of what I consider to be “jazz”.

I would like to thank everyone at Arts Council Malta especially Francis Agius, Daryl Ebeyer, Annabelle Stivala, Lara Darmanin and Joseph Agius Attard for their hard work involved in making this event possible. I hope that some of the energy and enthusiasm we put into this event will reach out to you. Enjoy.

MALTA JAZZ WEEK BY NIGHT

SAIL TO BREEZY JAZZ ISLAND

Tuesday 17 July – 9 p.m. Palazzo de la Salle 219 Republic Street, Valletta Free entrance

The vitality, the variety and the intimacy of the annual Malta Jazz Festival have been captured in a photographic exhibition that documents the 27 years of its existence Entitled ‘Jazz Island: a visual journey through 27 years of the Malta Jazz Festival’ the exhibition is a new initiative: it is a celebration of the jazz artists who participated in past editions of the festival, as seen through the eyes of Joe Smith. The exhibition launches the Malta Jazz Festival on 16 July at the Phoenicia Hotel, Floriana and is open to the public from 8.30p.m. It runs until July 21. A performance featuring the cool melodies of Stjepko Gut Quintet will follow at 9.00p.m. Smith’s work has become synonymous with the Malta Jazz Festival and, as artistic director Sandro Zerafa notes, “his visual documentation of the festival since its inception has managed to capture the verve, the diversity and the intimacy of this iconic event, featuring the most important artists in the jazz world, some of which have passed into the annals of jazz history.” Smith confides how in his jazz photography he tries to “convey the pressure, tension and emotion of improvisation”. His preference for a monochrome treatment is “in tune with what jazz is all about: compression of tones and economy of interpretation”. He is also after facial expressions, mood, body language and the connection

6

with the audience. “For me,” he muses, “these musicians are not actors on a stage but fellow artists whose bravura reveals without constraints the pain of love”. Speaking about the exhibition, Annabelle Stivala, Director Festivals Malta, notes: “As the Malta Jazz Festival celebrates 28 years of jazz music, Festivals Malta endeavours to develop the festival further with concerts around Valletta throughout the day, together with this new initiative which is a unique celebration of jazz artists who participated in past editions of the festival. We are very enthusiastic about ‘Jazz Island’, which is curated at the highest level, and which will leave a legacy for this special festival.” The Phoenicia’s General Manager Charles Azzopardi says: “Joe Smith is an inspiring photographer who has been following the Malta Jazz Festival since its inception. The Phoenicia is delighted to host this exhibition as part of the Jazz Festival. We hope this exhibition will bring a new audience to Smith’s work, which, as a supporter and promoter of Maltese culture, we are very happy to feature.”

A homage to Clark Terry The Stjepko Gut Sextet featuring Bertil Strandberg Monday 16 July – 9 p.m. Rotunda, Phoenicia Hotel, Floriana Free entrance

Stjepko Gut Quintet Stjepko Gut, a former Clark Terry protegé and one of Europe’s best kept jazz treasures, is also one of the patrons of the Malta Jazz Festival. Gut was a member of the Lionel Hampton All Star Band and he has toured and recorded extensively with Clark Terry, Horace Parlan, Clifford Jordan, Jimmy Heath, Curtis Fuller, Nicholas Payton, Kenny Washington and many other jazz icons. An excellent educator, he was a member of the faculty for the Graz Institut for Jazz for years. He will be performing in Malta with the cream of the crop of the French jazz scene – Hugo Lippi on guitar, Olivier Zanot on saxophone, Philippe Aerts on bass and Philippe Soirat on drums. LINE-UP: Stjepko Gut – trumpet, flugelhorn Olivier Zanot – alto saxophone Hugo Lippi – guitar Philippe Aerts – double bass Philippe Soirat – drums MALTA JAZZ FESTIVAL 2018

Writer Chuck Berg said, “Clark Terry is one of contemporary music’s great innovators, and justly celebrated for his great technical virtuosity, swinging lyricism, and impeccable good taste. Combining these with the gifts of a great dramatist, Terry is a master storyteller whose spellbinding musical ‘tales’ leave audiences thrilled and always awaiting more.” He is one of the most recorded musicians in the history of jazz, with more than 900 recordings. Terry’s discography reads like a Who’s Who In Jazz, with protagonists that include greats such as Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, Dinah Washington, Ben Webster, Aretha Franklin, Charlie Barnet, Doc Severinsen, Ray Charles, Billy Strayhorn, Dexter Gordon, Thelonious Monk, Billie Holiday, Gerry Mulligan, Sarah Vaughan, Coleman Hawkins, Zoot Sims, Milt Jackson, Bob Brookmeyer and Dianne Reeves. Stjepko Gut was a close friend and a protégé of Clark and he is one of the greatest ambassadors of the Clark Terry heritage. He has collaborated with him on various occasions. The Stjepko Gut ensemble will be joined by the unique Bertil Strandberg on trombone. A Tribute to Count Basie – The MCO Big Band plays Kansas City Suite A jazz big band consisting of seventeen musicians from the Malta Concert Orchestra, under the direction of Paul Abela, will be joined on stage by special guests Stjepko Gut (trumpet) and Gabriele Comeglio (saxophone) in a concert at Pjazza Teatru Rjal on 19th July as part of the Malta Jazz Festival 2018, where they will be performing the Kansas City Suite by Benny Carter written for the famous Count Basie Orchestra. Benny Carter wrote Kansas City Suite in 1960 picturing the elements of Kansas City stomp jazz, and tailored for the big brash sound of the Count Basie band. To Benny Carter, the different streets and places in Kansas City, where so many of the jazz greats lived and worked, and where so much of jazz history was written, evoked a mood, a rememberance of things past. He has, for this reason, titled the selections of this suite after these very same streets and places. The Kansas City of the ‘20s and 30s is now a legend, and the music that saw its beginnings there has since developed and moved into the mainstream of today’s jazz. in collaboration with

The Blue Tangerine Christian McBride’s New Jawn

The Blue Tangerine is a Franco-Maltese collaboration stemming from the Fringe Youth Jazz Orchestra initiative, a project created by the Malta Jazz Festival. Its main aim is to create synergies between local and international musicians. After the success of their first concert in July of 2016, the musicians decided to keep the project alive and have since played a series of concerts in France, including a date at the Sunset-Sunside club in Paris. All the members of this nine-piece ensemble have a solid jazz background. Their repertoire is inspired by Brazilian music; notably compositions by the great Hermeto Pascoal and his ‘Universal Music’, as well as by Pixinguinha, a master of ‘choro’ music during the early 20th century. The band also performs original music written and arranged by their leader, Vincent Jacqz.

Powered by a relentless energy and a boundless love of swing, Christian McBride’s path has seen a continuous positive arc since his arrival on the scene. With a career now blazing into its third decade, the Philadelphia native has become one of the most requested, most recorded, and most respected figures in the music world today. His latest grouping, Christian McBride’s New Jawn, is a killer unit, tight, soulful, in the pocket and in the groove. Jawn is Philly slang to describe just about everything and anything, but most importantly to understand why McBride named his new band so, it is probably this: ‘Jawn’ is one Philly thing New York can’t lay claim to. Raised in a city steeped in soul, McBride moved to New York in 1989 to pursue classical studies at the Juilliard School. There he was promptly recruited to the road by saxophonist Bobby Watson. Call it a change in curriculum: a decade’s worth of study through hundreds of recording sessions and countless gigs with an ever-expanding circle of musicians.

MALTA JAZZ FESTIVAL 2018

He has since become a five-time Grammy winner and can be likened to a force of nature, fusing the fire and fury of a virtuoso with the depth and grounding of a seasoned journeyman. Whether behind the bass or away from it, Christian McBride is always of the music. From jazz, to R&B, to pop/rock, to hip hop/neo-soul, to classical, he is a luminary with one hand ever reaching for new heights, and the other extended in fellowship—and perhaps the hint of a challenge—inviting us to join him. 17 MALTA JAZZ FESTIVAL 2018

Bokanté For the newly-formed international music ensemble Bokanté, connection is the foundation upon which all things are built. Rich in the sound of both delta and desert, the unusual but evocative instrumentation blends musical worlds to convey an urgent message of social awareness against the rising tide of exclusion and human indifference. The word bokanté means ‘exchange’ in Creole, the language of vocalist Malika Tirolien’s youth growing up on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. Now living in Montreal, she stands among eight musicians from four continents, each one accomplished in their own right and well-versed in music far beyond that of their point of origin. Two-time Grammy award-winning guitarists Michael League, Chris McQueen, and Bob Lanzetti (all from Snarky Puppy), percussion legend Jamey Haddad (Paul Simon, Sting), pedal and lap steel virtuoso Roosevelt Collier (Lee Boys, Karl Denson), and unplaceable percussionists André Ferrari (Väsen) and Keita Ogawa (Banda Magda, Yo-Yo Ma) come together to create a diverse ensemble rich in groove, melody, and soul. The band’s debut album, Strange Circles, goes from Zeppelin-esque blues stomp to folkloric Caribbean kaladja over the course of its 10 tracks, blending the extensive and varied knowledge of the individual players with a strong, yet empathetic, lyrical approach. Singing in both Creole and French, Tirolien’s words draw nuanced pictures of the struggles we face in our world today – racism, the refugee crisis, a dying planet, apathy towards human suffering – and offer words of thankfulness for those things which unify us, as well as hope for the future of our race. Through it all, Bokanté is a vibrant image of what it wishes to see in the world: connection, unity, and love through exchange. 18

MALTA JAZZ WEEK MASTERCLASSES

João Bosco João Bosco has been loved in his home country of Brazil for decades, since the 1960s when he first began composing and performing. In the early 1990s, Bosco mounted a major tour of the US, and since then he has become increasingly popular internationally, regularly performing at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival. Despite his growing popularity outside of his homeland, Bosco remains thoroughly attached to Brazil to the point of never leaving it for extended periods. His music, though rooted in Brazil’s classic samba and bossa nova traditions, combines rock and roll, jazz and other ethnic styles in an eclectic brew that is as inventive and challenging as he is.

The masterclasses will be held at the OFFBEAT Music Bar in 106 Merchant’s Street, Valletta.

In 2017 Bosco received a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Latin Recording Academy at the 18th Annual Latin Grammy Awards. His new album, Mano Que Zuera, was released at the end of 2017.
