n June 5, 2012 Wisconsin’s and the Nation’s most controversial Governor made history by miraculously becoming the only governor in America to survive a recall election. The minority population watched the results slowly trickle in and the fate of our futures became more and more uncertain. For the past year Wisconsinites rallied in Madison, the state capitol, protested in the courts and rallying together to collect over 1 million recall signatures to end the rein of Scott Walker. Democrats and Republicans alike unified to end the strategic plan of Walker and his regime to dismantle unions, the public school sector and government assistance programming. Under the dictating leadership of Scott Walker and the Republican agenda, Wisconsin has forfeited over $810 million dollars in federal funding and thousands of job opportunities. Under the hands of Scott Walker unions have virtually been eliminated and most city workers have been in uproar. Public sector employees have lost collective bargaining rights making unions a thing of the past some contracts ending as soon as June of 2013. The budget is hitting both the public school sector and health care hard, cutting an unbelievable $1.6 billion: Access to the health needs of children, FE

the elderly and expecting mothers were stripped in an effort to “regulate the budget”. The minority population along with Whites received the devastating news that Badger Care, the federally funded State health insurance program was cutting more than 350,000 families and individuals. Former State Representative Tamara Grisby commented stating, “when you take away from the have not’s you lower the quality of healthcare while increasing the cost for everyone”. With the win of the recent recall we can only anticipate more drastic and damaging changes. At the top of the conservative agenda is ensuring that President Obama is a one term President. Scott Walker was able to collect a whopping $34 million in campaign funding. More than 8 times the amount raised by his Democratic opponent, current Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett; Most of this astronomical budget coming from out of state anonymous donors, conveniently. Republican officials across the Nation flocked to ensure that Scott Walker had more than enough

resources to buy Wisconsinites votes. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Scott Walker spent more than $300,000 in advertising in the first weekend after Mayor Barrett announced his running for candidacy. Walker polluted the airways with monologues proclaiming that Wisconsin had alleviated millions in debt, reduced crime, is on its way to creating more jobs and made claims that under his leadership he has saved the damsel that is Wisconsin. His commercials showcased middle class White families thanking Walker for his “fearless” leadership. Subconsciously Walker was able to sway the opinions of the White Democrats who his advertisements were geared towards making them feel included in the small margin of people who benefit from his reforms. White middle class and working class citizens did not want to be clumped to-

while the larger more diverse cities showed tremendous support for Tom Barrett and Malon Mitchell for Lieutenant Governor. Both Parties pulled out all the stops for this recall. Former US President Bill Clinton made an appearance in support of Barrett; but not even the celebrity of Clinton could beat the battle of “the poor blacks vs. hard working, pull yourself up by the bootstrap whites”: By no means am I unfavorable to Whites but no one wants to be recognized as the underdog. 46.3% of Wisconsin voted for Barrett while 53.1% of voters voted for Walker. This election had one of the biggest turnouts Wisconsin has been for a gubernatorial election with 2,497,235 citizens showing up

gether with middle class and working class minority citizens and Walker played heavily on the need to feel superior to those believed by the majority to be undeserving. His ability to flash shiny objects in front of twinkling eyes allowed him to gain the appeal of the Democratic voters who just months earlier signed petitions to do away with him and his Lieutenant Governor. The Republican Party shelled out funds to also push their own Get Out to Vote initiative alongside the Democratic Party who made great attempts to keep the momentum that was ignited with the recall efforts. Northern cities with predominately White populations donned “Vote Walker” signs

at the polls and waiting for up to a reportedly 4 hours to cast their votes. Wisconsin is now the center of National attention. A state that has consistently been a liberal state is now said to be conservative. Wisconsin, once off limits and a nonfactor to Republican candidates for Presidency is now up for grabs and appealing to Mitt Romney and his camp. Scott Walker has also been a trailblazer to other Governors who want to tackle collective bargaining and controversial budget cuts. Alternative legislative initiatives like raising taxes have been thrown by the wayside while initiatives that take away from the have not’s are more favorable to the wealthy, those who control the flow of revenue nationwide. The convenience of taking away from those on the bottom seems more attainable to those watching and taking notes from Walker. Those lobbying, protesting and turning out in record numbers to voice their opinions are feeling defeated. What is next for Wisconsin? Walker held a cookout at the Governor’s Mansion to lick the wombs of his bills and initiatives while still moving forward with all of his plans to continue cutting the Wisconsin Budget while returning federal funding initiatives left and right. Round of applause for Walker dividing the Democratic Party in Wisconsin in the most segregated State in the Midwest: Does this amaze me, no.

o much of our culture is tied to sound; we take these sounds for granted. Whether you realize it not certain sounds are symbols of our childhoods, religions, and reference pivotal turning points in the evolution of technology. As technology changes we lose certain sounds that signified normalcy in our lives. Take for example the crow of the rooster that used to call the farmers to field every morning? That has long been replaced by the beeping of alarm clocks, and even those have been replaced now that your favorite song can be set to wake you

That is unless Brenden Chilcutt has found the solution in the creation of the Online Museum of Endangered Sounds. Chilcutt launched the site in January of 2012 as a way to preserve the sounds made famous by his favorite old technologies. He has set a ten year goal to create a vast database of some of the most famous sounds. While some may find Chilcutt’s

Many of our endangered sounds are those that meant a lot to many of our childhoods. Who could forget that annoying dial-up sound of AOL or that classic Nokia ringtone? ately it’s been seen everywhere from nail color to handbags and from shoes to apparel. Yes, that’s right, I’m talking about NEON colors! Now that spring and summer are quickly rolling in, it’s time to switch out those dark dull winter items for bright and bold neon colors. This blast from the past 80’s inspired trend is back and in full effect. With past 80’s trends such as shoulder pads, parachute pants leggings and leotards, this explosion of color was inevitable. Brace yourself for this seasons lighter and brighter color scheme consisting of fluorescent pinks, acid greens and yellows as well as many other eye catching colors. The trend is versatile and has hit the scene in popular stores like H&M and Forever 21 in addition to many high end collections such as Celine and Nicole Miller. Not only is this trend accessible through apparel but designers are incorporating the colors into sneakers, handbags, accessories, nail color and more! For those who are fearless, unafraid of color and don’t mind being seen, try rocking these neon colors with the still relevant color blocking trend. Start by pairing a bright pink FE

top with highlighter yellow pants, complete the look with a funky fun shoe. This summer is all about color! Of course not all designers are encouraging these colors to be worn together and not everyone is comfortable with this ultra retro look, so for those more conservative, try incorporating neon as the pop of color to your more subtle looks, this will give you an extra kick of fun for the summer. Pairing neon pieces with blacks and nudes adds a jolt of fun to a boring outfit. If you’re wearing an all black dress, try carrying a neon colored clutch or garnish your look with neon earrings and bracelets. Rocking a neon colored shoe with a nude dress would also make for a pulsing pop of color. Mix and matching these looks will carry you through late August up until fall so until then, don’t be afraid to embrace these perky hues of 80’s inspired glam!

VIRTUAL

ETERNITY O - Michael Tonge

ur time on earth is limited, or is it? Immortality and the fountain of the youth is something that has amazed humans since the beginning of time. We keep our memories of the past alive by bringing them back to existence through new cultural productions. We’ve been given the ability to do this through fashion, art, and music. Artists and writers attempt to leave a legacy and a body of work that can achieve eternity, long after they leave this world. That’s what makes life so precious, the fact that it isn’t something we can take for granted and our time here is limited. This mentality though is nothing new. But due to Drake’s hit “The Motto” there has been a revamping or as I’d prefer to call it a dumbing down of the ageold Latin phrase, “carpe diem” or “seize the day.”

Everyone is shouting you only live once, but I ask you, is that even the case anymore? Technology has changed certain aspects of our society, if not every aspect of society, forever. Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Google+, YouTube, and the list goes on. Social media is used daily by such a large portion of both American and international citizens. It is only natural that with death as a part of our everyday lives, the way we interact with the deceased is strongly reflected in our social media activities. There have been numerous studies examining the way we treat the Facebook and Myspace pages of deceased loved ones and acquaintances. With this we have to wonder what the future wills and testaments must address. It’s a little unnerving to think about having to outline how you want your Internet proAUGUST 2012 | FETCHEDGE.COM | FE

files will be maintained or deleted in case of your passing. We’ve all seen it happen. A close friend, family member, or classmate’s page is covered in “rest in peace” notices and fond memories as though the departed soul will ever be able to respond. Even more so celebrities are mourned, sometimes prematurely, on platforms like twitter. When this happens you’ll see people complaining about “twitter killing someone again.” While this is just said in jest, we are actually entering an era in which technology can essentially do the opposite. A virtual eternity can be achieved through other mediums assisted by our latest digital innovations. We’ve taken things as far as attempting to bring our favorite artists back from the dead. This past spring we saw Digital Domain Media Group’s hologram technology as they unveiled the Tupac hologram at the annual Coachella concert. Talk about a blast from the past. Don’t get me wrong I get excited at the idea of some of my favorite artists gracing the stage once again, but watching Pac yell west side in hologram form just isn’t the same. Are these individuals playing God? Is this exploitation of the image of beloved idols for capital gains? Is this going to be the next big trend in technology? When we look at fashion, big staples always make their way back to relevancy. But do we approve or even want the same things to happen with our most revered pop culture icons? How FE

did Snoop feel standing on stage to someone he once knew and actually made music with during the golden era of hip-hop? Personally when I pass away I don’t want any of my old friends or acquaintances sitting around reliving the old times with a hologram of a young Mike. I’m sure a lot of people see that there are a few dope aspects of bringing back artists via hologram. But if this is now, what’s to come? Just know that the show featuring 2 of Amerikaz most wanted is the first of many. What’s next? Elvis? Bob Marley? Would you be surprised to catch Diddy and Mase shucking and jiving around a hologram Biggie? Personally I’m torn between the two directions, while I think our generation could benefit from the reemergence by the likes of Marley, or Michael Jackson perhaps we need to just sit down and listen to their music or throw a “Blast from the Past” party instead of teetering towards an iRobotesque reality.

Her designs became popular because of its Parisian and elegant elements. In 1965, several airlines chose to use Carven uniforms for their flight crews. The House went on to create uniforms for the opening of the Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport. Over the years the popularity of Carven reached Japan. The women loved Carven for its signature cut for their small frames. During the 90’s’ Madame Carven decided to retire. Upon the 50th anniversary her creations were shown at the Musse Galliera. ture look. Little signature notes like the green and white stripe. Carven continues to exude the Parisian elegance and chic details. In 2010, Former Givenchy designer Guillaume Henry became the creative director of Carven. He was on a mission to make it fresh and new but keep the same elements. He wanted to continue to hold the legacy of the House’s Haute Couture years. The line began to offer affordable ready to wear pieces and accessories. Carven quickly became the new “it” label to wear. With new beginnings, such as Craven opening its first boutique in Paris, Henry did not waste anytime making sure Carven stayed in its roots. Summer 2012 deemed another new chapter for Carven. Henry presented a Carven mens collection. It infused the same qualities as the

women’s collection, fun, young and elegant. For mens winter 2012,expect lots of cable knits, turtlenecks, rolled trousers, and duffle coats. The women’s RTW collection features roll neck sweaters and fabrics such as, wool twill, crepe, satin organza, fake fur, and satin lapels. The fall/ winter collection is a pallet of color and prints. The collection features a print that was inspired by the portrait of Madonna. Henrys inspiration was the Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch. Henry kept the hemlines modest, mid thigh and rounded hips. The main elements of the RTW collection were in true Carven fashion, young and fun. Henry seems to have kept his promise by keeping the legacy of Craven alive.

efore black was beautiful there were visions of wonder such as Donyale Luna. Time Magazine dubbed 1966 “The Luna Year” raving over the 6’2 model known for wearing bright blue contact lenses and blond wigs. Strikingly beautiful and the hottest model in Europe at the time, the only thing keeping her fame from being cemented was the fact that Luna was a Negro. Growing up she could be described as a “very weird FE

child, even from birth, living in a wonderland, a dream.” Luna’s dreamlike state followed her into adulthood as she fabricated her identity. To the rest of the world she was born to a father with the surname Luna , not the abusive Nathanial Freeman who was murdered when she was 18. Her mother was supposedly Mexican, a far stretch from the African American Peggy Freeman who wanted her daughter to become a nurse. With a whimsical

mindset and a desire to escape her harsh reality, the beauty originally born Peggy Anne Freeman, was discovered by photographer David McCabe and took New York by storm when she arrived in 1964. “Back in Detroit I wasn’t considered beautiful or anything, but here I’m different… They were looking for a new kind of model, a girl who is beautiful like you’ve never seen before.” This statement in regards to her success echo’s that of the media coverage Luna received during her rise to fame. In the Time Magazine article written about her Luna is described as only 20, a Negro, hails from Detroit, not to be missed. While it seemed that the rest of the world seemed to be well aware of Luna being a Negro as they put it, she gave her African American heritage no acknowledgement in helping her achieve her status or for her standout beauty. Being an African American woman was a burden that Luna could not erase as she did the rest of her history. In 1966 she became the first African American woman to grace the cover of Vogue. Despite the fact that her pose is a profile with one hand covering her face except for one bold cat-eye, the reason as to not offend Vogue’s regular readers; such a moment in black history was pivotal and everyone besides Luna saw it that way. In a profile written by journalist Judy Stone , for the New York Times in 1968, titled “Luna, Who Dreamed of Being Snow White,” Stone describes her as “secretive, mysterious, contradictory, evasive, mercurial, and insistent upon her multiracial lineage — exotic, chameleon strands of Mexican, American

Indian, Chinese, Irish, and, last but least escapable, Negro.” As her popularity grew Luna was featured in various films and grew very close to Andy Warhol who placed her in his popular film, “Camp.” When interviewed about the barriers that she had broken down for other women of color Luna responded “If it brings about more jobs for Mexicans, Chinese, Indians, and Negroes, groovy. It could be good, it could be bad. I couldn’t care less. “ Entering into the late 1960 to the 1970’s Luna’s career began to falter as she partied incessantly and experimented with drugs, declaring LSD as one of her favorites. It had the ability to either draw her back into the fantasy world that she knew as a child, or force her to face her reality and see the world for what it really was. Donyale Luna’s life came to a tragic end when she overdosed on pills while in Rome in 1979. It is truly unfortunate that her African American heritage was one she tried to deny her whole career, but it is in the black community that she is celebrated. She paved the runway for Tyra, Naomi, even Beverly Johnson and Iman. Society has come so far in accepting black as beautiful; it is amazing to believe that such a groundbreaker in the world of fashion had to live in world where she felt that she was unfortunately Negro.

THE BLIND LEADING THE BLIND!

You are so ugly! We are all living in this one world, but we are all living in different worlds. When are you going to wake up and capture the REAL thoughts of your mind? People, we have such a long way to go. This generation we are growing in is completely disgusting. These strange forces have walked into our heads and have stolen every valuable lesson we have ever learned, while replacing them with negativity that you somehow find amusing. Today, reading and writing makes is easily accessible for a person to create a false self, a mask. My main example is social media. It completely controls the minds of this generation. Values that were supposedly taught to people as children dwindle away because individuals only care of what the next person thinks. Therefore causing individuals to write something or post a picture that they think is cool just for attention and laughs. Social media has become a trap and the blind are suffering significantly. In regards to reading, individuals do not understand that they must not believe everything that they read. And when those people begin to believe everything that they read, they mock, they follow, and ultimately causes mass destruction…when will you open your eyes and become a true leader? Until next time... L.

MONEY, POWER, & RESPECT IS THE KEY TO LIFE - Shakkiah Beasley Money, Power and Respect is the Key to Life: these are principals, especially in our culture and generation that are instilled in us from the womb. It is drilled into our minds; it is pierced into bodies and melted into our souls through music, rap lyrics and song verses. It is hammered into our minds through music videos, society views and opinions and unrealistic expectations from people. If you look around the world in our generation of people, the only thing on society’s mind from the President to the nickel and dime bagging hustler on the corner is: Money, Power and Respect.

THE CONVERSATION

Regardless of stature, title, position and race everyone wants to have Money, Power and Respect. We have been poisoned so long with the beliefs of the world, that we forget to strive for dreams, we don’t have time to think the unthinkable or reach for the impossible, we don’t have time to find happiness and true serenity, because we have been brainwashed to build our lives on three principals: Money, Power and Respect, and if we don’t have these three principals then our lives are not successful. The world around us is full of people striving for acceptance of others, versus the peace and tranquility of ones sanity. We work jobs that we do not like or not happy working, we put ourselves in positions that boxes up our creativity and individuality; we stop dreaming and stop reaching; we are willing to commit crimes and put ourselves in harm’s way just to gain the Money, Power and Respect. Money according to Merriam Webster is persons or interests possessing or controlling great wealth. The definition of Power is (according to Merriam Webster) possession of control, authority, or influence over others. Respect means the quality or state of being esteemed (esteemed is to set a high value on: regard highly and prize accordingly). If you look at the definitions of all three principals they all have the root meaning of control and authority over others. Are we as people looking to control the freedom and differentiated thinking of others? Are we looking to shut down the creativity and individuality of cultures? Are we as people looking to continuously control a nation with the mind set of these three principals? Money in biblical terms is the root of all evil, yet in the contrary it is what makes the world go round, and as person who loves monetary items and I pleasure myself with the best of the best, I have to make it clear that I am not against the gaining of money, what I am against is the control money has over people. I, like most people was once under the control of the three principals, working a job that I hated, but the money was too good to leave, in situation that stressed me out but the power that it gave

FE

34

me over people fueled my ego and the respect that I received kept me locked in trying to gain these principals. But even with all three things I still couldn’t gain selfgratification. Money power and respect is the key to life: really? What life do all these three principals open the door for? Control, lust, vengeance, pride and ambiguity .Life is meant to be filled with joy, peace and love; those are the three principals we should seek after daily. We were never created as people to be controlled by any source of power other than the high calling of God. We were created uniquely in Gods own image, meaning we all have something placed inside of us that was strategically and uniquely created in us for the world to experience. We lose our self-creativity, self-power, self-love and self- distinguish-ment when we fight, live and die by money, power and respect. If you do everything for money and not the joy and passion of it; then you automatically sought yourself short and cheated the world from seeing your true abilities. Besides you want ever reach your full potential doing things with the wrong motives, you may gain the money, you may even gain the power and receive the respect but you will never receive the fulfillment of self-satisfaction within your works. You can still receive the money respect and power out of doing your calling and passion in life but you will receive those thru showing love, representing peace and living In full joy, because love is contagious just as evil is contagious, but which would you rather be responsible for infecting the world with good or evil? Life is not about what you have, or what you’re trying to get out of life; it’s not about how much you can obtain in a life time, no; life is about how many people you touched, how many people were motivated and encouraged thru your ways and works, and how many people were better because you came into their lives. That’s what life is about not about trying and living after the money power and respect but making a community grow because you were a part of it, and making a village prosper because you lead it and making a nation succeed because you followed your calling. THAT IS WHAT LIFE REPRESENTS. And after you do all those things then you will receive love, joy and peace which over powers the equivalency of money power and respect. Don’t live your life for Money power and respect live your life to build, empower and educate all in your way!

THE HANDBOOK - Shaunetta Stiger THE 1920’S WERE A ROAMING DECADE, FULL OF NEW BEGINNINGS, INVENTION, AND LIBERATION. IN THIS TIME PEOPLE FIRST LEARNED TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES THREW THEIR CLOTHING AND ATTITUDES. AND WHAT SEEMED AS A TIME FOR THE GENIUS OF MAN, WOMEN BEGAN TO THRIVE. TO THESE LIBERATED WOMEN, THIS PERIOD BROUGHT SOCIALIZATION AND FRATERNIZING TO THE FOREFRONT, WHICH THEY ENJOYED PUBLICLY. DESPITE THE PAST YEARS WOMEN WERE NOW ALLOWED TO SMOKE, DRINK AND APPLY MAKEUP IN PUBLIC INSTEAD OF RETIRING TO THE POWDER ROOM.

Until the 1920’s high fashion had been for richer more classy women and the construction consisted of high quality fabrics. The flappers began as poor women who made their clothing in the confines of their homes. Because the clothing was homemade, the construction was very simple. These women sported long slick silhouettes while partying at the nightclubs. They were considered rebel women to the older more Edwardian crowds. These women were carefree and open, they started their very own subculture with their own fads as well. As said before in the twenties, it was fashionable to apply make-up in public, so the increase in make-up use was rapid. As well as sales of tobacco products as now women were allowed to smoke in public. This lifestyle seemed free and liberating to a lot of women so the style of dress and manners of the flapper girls began to become popular.

FLAPPERS: THE UNIFORM The flapper women had a very unique and interesting way of dressing. The masculine lines in women’s clothing become more and more severe as time went on. Female clothing suddenly became looser and shapeless, with very little definition. It was popular to be tanned, have little to no shape and have broad shoulders. Women desired to have flat chests and seem narrow. A boyish feature was the most attractive with very little curves. Suddenly, the long and

covering skirts of the pervious Edwardian pe- riod were no more and skirts became shorter. This kind of dress that was unheard of before now was thriving. The skirts were now showing women’s ankles, calves, and feet under nude or pastel colors. As bare arms and legs became all the rage, the stockings that were once wool and thick, now began to have prints and were sheer. Another successful fad around this time was the flapper’s short hair. Having short in this period was considered beautiful and classy. But only the most daring of women would wear the shortest of haircuts. The short hair increased the boyish appeal that these women desired. FLAPPERS: THE DESIGNER Gabeille “CoCo” Chanel was her name and she not only supported the flapper movement but created some of the most revolutionary clothing to ever be worn around this time period. We all know miss CoCo as a iconic designer who changed women’s fashion forever. In the twenties, Chanel designed clothing with very little curves and used the neutral colors that were so popular with the flappers. Chanel herself sported many of the flapper women’s styles always baring her legs and straight line silhouette. Her designs were usually made for comfortably and ease so they were made from fluid jersey fabrics. Flappers were women of spirit and courage, they displayed their individuality to the fullest and still inspire many women today. Speaking of the women of this generation, many similar traits exist in their personalities that would have been found in the flapper women of the 1920’s. Women today are all about living as free, independent , and expressing themselves in their clothing and mannerisms. EDITORS NOTE

W

e are in the stages where the next few years will shape our entire lives. We are learning there is a thin line between reaching your dreams and allowing them to quickly dwindle away. We often do not know our own minds, struggling to understand why we did what we did in the past and what it is that we really want for the future. Some of our thoughts are subconscious, affecting our conscious thoughts without knowing it. Other times we distract ourselves when submerged thoughts break through the surface, an effort to hide those thoughts from ourselves. If we struggle to understand ourselves, how can we expect to change the world? Today, you must grasp every great vision. Let nothing halt you from achieving substantial growth. Put your faith to the test and allow God to display his power through you. Even if you find yourself backed into a corner, please do not forget your faith and understanding of his everlasting love. Many people fail this test, but the few who pass become fully aware of his power, then that power begins to manifest and great new beginnings occur. But please understand that you have to be able to focus on yourself before greatness occurs. When focusing on yourself, look deep within and find who you truly are. Leave all negativity and opinions at the door and force yourself to know every aspect of yourself. We challenge you to make a list of your good and bad qualities. Draw a line down the center of your paper, creating two columns for ‘Good’ and ‘Bad’, and begin to list each quality. After you do this, make it a goal to scratch each bad quality off, while enhancing each good quality. This will take time, but remember that everything is possible. To learn you must discipline yourself. We remind ourselves of this daily. Find an accountability partner that will offer support in your growth. Let us know how it goes! Impress less. Inspire more. Love, Ashley Curtis & Carlisa Pridgen
