FROM THE HEADMASTER As I reflect on my time as Headmaster of Fettes College, something that never ceases to amaze me, year after year, is the generosity of the Fettes Community. Last year was no exception. The generous contributions made to the College by so many in 2015-16 have made a very real difference to us.

I often say that Fettes is about much more than exam success. Fettesians relish their sporting achievements; they enjoy taking part in wonderful musical and theatrical performances and above all, I believe, take great pride in competing for their Houses in the various inter-house competitions throughout the year. The simple fact is all Fettesians have the opportunity to be the best they can be.

I am enormously proud of all that has been achieved by the dedicated staff, Board of Governors, Fettes Foundation Trustees, Donors and other friends of the College over the last 19 years, but I am especially proud of the Fettesians who I have been privileged enough to know during my time as Headmaster. When Debbie and I move on this summer, there is no doubt that we will miss Fettes tremendously. Something I am pleased to report once again on excellent exam that has brought us both so much happiness over the results, including our best ever performance at GCSE. years is being able to see exceptional and ambitious Our students benefit from wonderful teaching, but they young men and women, who would not ordinarily benefit themselves are focused and work extremely hard to from the opportunities of a Fettes education, excel as a achieve the results they do and I am proud of them all. result of financial support from others. Last year I reported that The Sunday Times had named To that end we are resolved, as our time at the helm of Fettes Scottish Independent Secondary School of the Fettes draws to an end, to work closely with the Fettes Year, recognising our firm commitment to deliver an Foundation Trustees and Director of Development, Nicola all-encompassing education of unrivalled quality within a Pickavance, to raise money to increase philanthropic caring, family-oriented community promoting excellence income towards bursaries. I hope you enjoy learning in all areas of school life. This year, I am delighted to more about these plans on the following pages. report another highly coveted accolade, this time from Tatler who named Fettes their Public School of the Year. We would be delighted and extremely grateful if you would help us follow in the footsteps of our Founder, The Tatler Schools Guide has become the definitive Sir William Fettes, to provide a great education for others. reference for those seeking information and guidance about potential schools for their children, and the Editors Michael Spens of the Guide are rigorous and discerning in their research Headmaster, Fettes College of schools. Winning this award is a powerful testament to the qualities of Fettesians, staff and all members of the wider Fettes Community who support us so generously.

THE SPENS’ BURSARY FUND Please support the Fettes Foundation this year with a gift towards The Spens’ Bursary Fund. At Fettes College we believe that talented children should receive a Fettes education and all the benefits and opportunities it presents regardless of their financial circumstances. When Sir William Fettes left a bequest in his will for the education, maintenance and outfit of young people, he could not have foreseen that the College bearing his name would be at the forefront of contemporary education, not only in Scotland, but in the world. The thriving reputation of Fettes College ensures that our inspirational Headmaster, Michael Spens, can retire in July 2017 knowing that Fettes is in an incredibly good place. The improvements to the campus, the curriculum and pastoral care that he and his wife Debbie have brought to the College over the past 19 years have made Fettes and Fettesians stand out on the global stage. This year, in recognition of all that Michael and Debbie Spens have achieved since joining Fettes in 1998, the Foundation is raising funds for The Spens’ Bursary Fund to help increase philanthropic support towards bursary provision.

“We are very grateful for the bursary our daughter receives, without which we would have been unable to send her to Fettes College. She is happy and has been most fortunate to receive a wonderful all-round education. We thank the Headmaster and the staff at Fettes for all the life changing opportunities they provide for our daughter and her fellow pupils.” Parent

When the College opened its doors in 1870, most of the 53 boys attending had their fees paid in full. They were known as “Foundationers”. Today there are 86 students in receipt of financial support at Fettes College, with more than 40% of them receiving 80%-110% funding.

This time last year we shared with you the story of OF and Nobel Laureate Professor Sir Angus Deaton (Gl 1959-1964). Professor Sir Angus, pictured below, was the beneficiary of a Fettes education through the philanthropy of others and often speaks of how grateful he is.

“Fettes is unique… you become a Fettesian and with that comes respect, honesty, dedication and a huge amount of self-belief. I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to attend Fettes. The experiences and memories I have from my time at the College will never be forgotten.” Bursary Recipient

More recently a young man who left Fettes in 2016 has spoken of the difference a bursary made to him:

“I count myself extremely lucky that I have been given the opportunities I have through Fettes and hope that in the future I will be able to help others have the same “I doubt if anyone ever had a better academic opportunities. Without a bursary I would have missed education than Fettes gave to me. And I emphasize the out on five life defining years of Fettes education and ‘gave’. Being a Foundation Scholar made it all possible.” I am so grateful that, despite my family’s financial situation, I could have a truly great education.” Another recent bursary recipient wrote in her personal review of her last term:

“I am so grateful for all that Fettes has given to me, thank you.” We are grateful to the many donors who contribute to and recognise the importance of supporting bursary provision and we hope that many more will join these generous benefactors in this significant year by supporting The Spens’ Bursary Fund.

“Rest assured that we will continue to contribute to your bursary fund. Fettes did so much for our children; that is the least we can do in return.” Bursary Donor

5

“My daughter truly benefitted from her time at Fettes and doesn’t believe she would have achieved her 3 A* or got her place at her chosen University without that support and experience.” Parent

“The practice of granting Bursaries for the education of boys and girls from less wealthy families is, to me, a fundamental of the values on which Fettes was originally founded. In my case, I feel particularly well qualified to hold such a strong opinion in that, during my first year at Fettes, I sat next to a Foundation Scholar who went on to win The Nobel Prize for Economics in 2015, namely (now Sir) Angus Deaton. What a privilege.” Bursary Donor

“Fettes is the sum of its parts and there is no doubt that all our students, including those in receipt of financial support, make the College what it is today. To that end, Debbie and I are resolved, in our final year at the helm of Fettes, to work closely with the Fettes Foundation to raise funds for The Spens’ Bursary Fund. We would be delighted and extremely grateful if members of the warm and generous Fettes Community would make a donation towards this fund.” Michael Spens Headmaster, Fettes College

Eligibility for Bursaries At Fettes there are no criteria set in stone to determine eligibility for bursaries other than financial need. Each application is assessed on its own merits following a thorough review of the detailed financial information provided by parents. Any offer made is based solely on an assessment of what parents can afford to pay. Until now Fettes has conducted this process entirely in house but henceforth we are engaging a third party agency to review each application and report back. The application process includes a meeting with me and, for UK based parents, a home visit. Crucially, bursaries are offered for one academic year only and reviewed annually, adjusted only depending on changes in the family’s own financial circumstances. Our aim is to make a life changing difference to students we support. The Sixth Form intake for September 2017 is no exception, with the majority of bursary students receiving financial support in excess of 90% of the school fees. Peter Worlledge The Bursar, Fettes College

THE PAVILION RESTORATION PROJECT Our Vision In May 1906, the Pavilion was built using funds raised through an appeal organised by Old Fettesians, in memory of the much-loved Carrington Housemaster, John Shapland Yeo (1860-1904). Since then, the Pavilion has not only been the sporting hub at Fettes but also a place where many wonderful memories have been made.

“I have not been in this building for 42 years and yet it feels like yesterday. I am a boy again. Old Fettesian Plans are in place for structural restoration and sensitive refurbishment to ensure that the Pavilion continues to be a hive of sporting activity and is brought into the 21st Century by adapting to the needs of the pupils and the Fettes Community.

7

Our vision is that, with the support of donors, the Pavilion will become a co-educational venue that incorporates a flexible hospitality space for our community and visiting teams. It will once again become a place where teams can be inspired to get out there and win.

Making this happen Fundraising for this project is very much a priority for the Fettes Foundation. We were fortunate to receive a generous legacy from Paddy Croker (Staff 1959-1965) recently. This and the tremendous generosity already shown by donors to the Pavilion has raised over £260,000 of our £1 million goal. We are aiming to raise the remaining funds by 2019-20 and hope to open the newly restored Pavilion in 2020. It seems fitting that the restoration of the Pavilion will be funded through philanthropy once again, just as it was over a century ago by the Old Fettesians who wanted to remember a Housemaster they described as “a hero with an understanding heart, brave, honest and kind”.

“For me, the Pavilion was more than just a place to change prior to a 1st XV Rugby fixture. It was a place that took 15 individual school boys and brought them together as a collection of men, ready for battle. It was where the final prep, team talk and team tactics were discussed. It was where a number of Fettesians truly felt at home in a brotherhood of men, unable to be replicated anywhere else.” Chris Thomson 1st XV Captain 2007 (Inv-Ki 2001-2008)

If you would like to help us restore this iconic building to its former glory or simply find out more about the project and plans, please contact Claudia Wellwood at c.wellwood@fettes.com or by telephoning +44 (0)131 311 4758.

8

Your Memories A big part of what makes the Pavilion special to the people that have passed through its doors is their own personal history and the memories they have made there. As part of the project, we have been collecting memories, photographs and memorabilia from members of the Fettes Community to add to our already rich archive. We are working with the Fettes College Archivist, Craig Marshall, to develop ideas for the display of this invaluable memorabilia. Existing boards, some of which date back to 1870, will be fully restored and will remain pride of place in the Pavilion. We are absolutely committed to ensuring Fettes’ sporting history can be celebrated and safeguarded in the most appropriate manner.

If you have any Pavilion or sporting memories, photographs or archive material that you would like to share with us, please get in touch with Claudia Wellwood by email to c.wellwood@fettes.com or by calling +44 (0)131 311 4758. We will be so grateful and thrilled to see what you have to share!

FUNDRAISING DINNERS Each January we host a fundraising dinner to support pupil tours and bursaries. Parent Choir – fundraising for the Fettes College Chapel Choir Tour 2016 As part of the fundraising for the Choir Tour our parent community had the opportunity to train intensively for a weekend with Director of Music, David Goodenough. The parents came together brilliantly to sing in Sunday Chapel in June 2016. We are extremely grateful to the following parents, Old Fettesians and friends who supported our fundraising dinners in 2016 and in 2017 by providing advice and prizes. Their support helped us raise significant funds towards the Chapel Choir Tour to Hong Kong last summer, the forthcoming Hockey Tour to Barcelona and Rugby Tour to South Africa and bursaries. 2016 Mr & Mrs PND Cooke Mr IW & Dr S Gale DA Goodenough (Staff 1998-) Mrs J Grassie Mrs LJ Gray Hamilton & Inches Mr & Mrs JR Hanson Mrs C Harley Mrs C Kerr Mr & Mrs A Nairn National Museums Scotland National Galleries Scotland AJE Robertson (Gl 1976-1981) R Rowlands MCB Spens (Headmaster 1998-)

“As fundraising for the magnificent new Spens Building drew to a close, the Fettes Foundation’s priorities shifted towards raising funds for the Pavilion Restoration Project, increasing philanthropic support towards bursaries and securing unrestricted donations which enable Trustees to direct funds in line with College priorities. These wonderful results show that the Fettes Community responded most generously and that we continue to receive support at all levels from Old Fettesians, parents past and present and other friends, staff and former staff from across the globe. On behalf of all those who benefit from these gifts now and in the future, please accept my heartfelt thanks.” Colin Grassie (Mo 74-79) Chairman of the Fettes Foundation

THE DIFFERENCE GIFTS MAKE Donations from our loyal and generous Fettes Community in 2015-2016 have made a noticeable difference in a variety of areas. Each and every donation shows what cumulative giving can achieve for Fettesians on a daily basis. Thank you to all of our supporters who made the following projects possible. College Chapel Bells Refurbished For much of the past nine years very little noise has emanated from the Bell-Tower. However, in January 2016 bell-ringing once again returned as an activity. Our budding Fettesian campanologists are dedicated and enthusiastic, enjoying the new skills they have learnt from local bell-ringers. On Founder’s Day 2016, they were delighted to ring the bells to announce Chapel, some 60 years after their predecessors first did so.

“I am delighted that donors have given us the opportunity to offer such a unique and rewarding activity for pupils which I hope will continue to go from strength to strength in the years to come.” Craig Marshall Fettes College Archivist

Chapel Choir Tour to Hong Kong Last summer the Fettes Chapel Choir journeyed to Hong Kong for the Chapel Choir Tour, performing in a variety of venues including St John’s Cathedral, All Saints’ Cathedral, Chung Chi College Chapel (Chinese University) and Diocesan Boys’ School. The Choir excelled themselves on every level and have already been invited to go back!

“The tour to Hong Kong was the highlight of our singing year.” Member of the Chapel Choir Pupils on the tour were lucky to receive support from the Fettes Community when they were in Hong Kong. Thank you to Urosh Teodorovich (Inv-Ki 2001-2008), Jerome Barty Taylor (Inv-Ki 2000-2005), Andy Ng (Ki 2000-2004) and the Galloway family to name just a few. Many would not have had the opportunity to join the tour without the support of donors, to whom we are tremendously grateful.

“It was fabulous to see so much of Hong Kong but our musical achievements were amazing. We improved so much during our tour and came back to the new school year with higher standards and closer friendships.” Member of the Chapel Choir

Gifts for Departments

Classics: The Classics Department recently launched the McLean Classics Essay Competition. The competition Kimmerghame: Two very solid picnic tables and benches is hugely beneficial to pupils because it allows them to were purchased for Kimmerghame House last summer build on their learning in class and explore topics more term. They have been wonderful for events like House in depth. The GCSE and A Level titles allow pupils to BBQs as well as a lovely place for the boys to read and develop their independent research skills and to practice study when the weather is fine. time management when it comes to a long piece of work. It is an excellent opportunity for anyone who is enthusiastic about the Ancient World. The donated cash prizes are awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place entrants.

“Our daughter benefitted hugely from being part of the Classics Department and our hope is that many others will obtain a similar advantage.” Kate McLean Past parent Support for Learning: The Support for Learning Department purchased a new laptop for support resources, which can be transported around College for use in lessons. With the latest software and operating system it is faster and more versatile. Crucially, it is compatible with the programmes and software that pupils use in House and at home, allowing teachers to expand their understanding of pupils needs within Support for Learning.

15

Pipes and Drums: The Fettes College Pipe Band has been able to purchase six sets of Great Highland Bagpipes. These instruments, made by David Naill & Co are of the highest quality and craftsmanship and are a credit to the world renowned manufacturer. With such promise in the ranks of the Competing Band, at least two sets will be played at the highest level of schools’ competition with the remaining sets providing the very best in tonal quality and stability to those enthusiastic learners making the jump from chanter to bagpipes. With due care and attention, these instruments will be a solid investment for the future of the band and should still be sounding sweet in a hundred years’ time.

Gifts for Sport Girls’ Football: The Girls’ Football team has thrived this year and thanks to generous donations, their new GK gloves have proved a brilliant addition. They have entered the Scottish Independent Schools competition this year and had a number of friendly matches. GoPro Camcorders: Two GoPro cameras were purchased recently and have been used by the lacrosse coaches to video matches and training sessions. The girls have really benefitted from being able to watch their movement around the goal and this has helped develop their settled attack and defence. The cameras will also be used for the tennis and hockey terms and improve video analysis. The GoPro camera can be attached to the net and any goal post, giving a great view of the game. Swimming Pool Flags: The school swimming galas have been transformed by the addition of distance flags that provide backstroke swimmers information about the timing of their turns. These have been extremely useful and, along with the new starting blocks, add a very professional touch to those competitions. PE Equipment: The new PE classroom and lab has benefitted from new equipment used in the analysis of athletes and data collection for some of the more advanced courses. It is a fantastic addition to the Sports Department’s resources and will undoubtedly encourage more pupils into the subject. Rowing: Four new rowing ergometers have allowed the Sports Department to start indoor rowing games this year. They are already proving very popular and further investment is being considered. The hope is that the new club will graduate to a boat when the weather improves and eventually to racing as the pupils gain experience. Richard Davies (Staff 2006 - present) has agreed to run the boat club and has instigated a House competition for later in the term, incorporating all the latest video and internet technology.

16

Cricket: The Cricket Club at Fettes purchased a new batting cage last year, which provides top players the opportunity to train on the 1st XI pitch and enables the type of preparation which proved invaluable to the boys in their successful season last summer.

Callover Archive Cabinets Thanks to donations from the parents of 2015 Leavers, Charles Taylor Woodwork has been commissioned to construct two beautiful matching solid wood archive display cabinets to stand in Callover Hall. These will exhibit a variety of archive memorabilia spanning the history of Fettes College and celebrating the people that have passed through it. Previous Charles Taylor

commissions for Fettes include the scroll panelwork and chancel pews in Chapel and the restoration of the Old Library.

2016 Leavers At the end of each academic year, we ask parents of Leavers to donate the deposit they paid when their son or daughter started their Fettes journey to the Fettes Foundation. This year we asked parents to support the Pavilion Restoration or to entrust Foundation Trustees to direct their gifts to where the College needs them most. As ever we received a fantastic response and are grateful to everyone who helped us in this way.

Donations to The Prep School Prep School Lighting: The Prep School Hall has been fitted with wall mounted stage-lighting. Previously, lighting had to be hired for events so this is a wonderful investment. It has proven very beneficial for Drama lessons for a range of age groups and has been a great addition to Assemblies too. The lighting provides an important focal point for presentations and theatrical performances as well as being an invaluable addition for learning and teaching in this space. Prep School Science: This year, donations to Prep Science went towards purchasing compost for the two new raised beds to create a fertile area to expand the range and type of plants prep pupils will cultivate this spring. They will be planting and harvesting a herb garden, alongside some larger root vegetables. Raised beds provide a space for the children to work whilst teachers can access all sides of them to assist during lessons. This year, the Prep School Greenhouse has been an ideal space to engage children in the ‘Rocket Science experiment’ run nationally with Tim Peake and the Royal Horticultural Society. The impact of this space has been most noticeable in encouraging healthy eating of the fresh tomatoes, courgettes and herbs produced and gardening among Prep pupils has become a favourite extracurricular activity. Scottish Prep Schools Athletics Championships: Savills very kindly sponsored the 2016 Scottish Independent Association of Prep Schools Athletics Championship again this year. Many schools took part on the day and Fettesians performed very well. Savills Edinburgh Directors, Jamie Macnab and Ben Fox, said:

“Savills is proud to sponsor the Scottish IAPS Athletics Championships at Fettes. We have a long-standing association with the school, with Fettes parents and former pupils working at Savills. Many Fettes parents are past and current Savills clients.”

We have continued to receive generous donations for various Houses and departments since 1st September 2016. As a result, many projects and plans are already underway for this academic year. We look forward to sharing these stories with you in due course.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT: REFLECTIONS ON YEAR ONE It is hard to believe that I took up my post as Director of Development at Fettes College 18 months ago. Time has flown by and been filled with much excitement. Members of the Fettes Community have made me feel very welcome wherever I have gone, both at home and abroad. I have been struck by the overwhelming sense of passion and enthusiasm so many have for Fettes College. Fettes is not just a brilliant school, but a home where lifetime friendships are built upon a shared respect and fondness for a truly remarkable place. When I joined Fettes the Spens Building was in the final stages of construction and the Fettes Foundation Trustees, along with my predecessor Elisabeth Anderson, had very nearly completed fundraising for this transformational project, which opened its doors in January 2016. Today, Fettesians are relishing opportunities to learn, discover and create in the magnificent Salvesen Art School, Culachy Music School and in the new modern Maths, Economics, Geography and Modern Languages classrooms.

“The Culachy Music School has elevated my level of musical satisfaction at Fettes tenfold. From practising the Steinway in the main auditorium to exploring musical ideas on the midi keyboards and iMacs, it is safe to say the new music school has transformed what is possible for me.” Pupil

“Natural light combined with spacious classrooms have made teaching a delight. We are finding pupils using the department far more out of class time as it is such a calming environment. The ability to store equipment out of sight has allowed a minimalist feel where the focus is very much on the pupils and their work displayed on the walls.” Hannah Cockburn Head of Geography

19

“Seeing the Upper Sixth space is a real incentive to for us to keep going and working hard in Art. We can’t wait to study Art at A Level or IB.” Pupil

Art Studio in the Salvesen Art School

This inviting building is an invaluable asset for Fettes and it simply would not have materialised without generous gifts from parents, past and present, and Old Fettesians (OFs). I am deeply grateful to everyone who supported this vision. Now that the Spens Building is complete, we are focussing our fundraising on increasing philanthropic support towards bursary provision, securing £1 million to restore and refurbish the Pavilion and increasing unrestricted gifts (where donors entrust Foundation Trustees to direct support to where the College needs it most). Our “at a glance” results for 2015-16 on pages 10 and 11 are very encouraging in that they show the appetite for supporting these priorities. I would like to take this opportunity to add my own thanks to all the generous donors to the Fettes Foundation this year. Fundraising aside, the Development Team continues to work closely with the Old Fettesian Association (OFA), in particular the OFA Committee and Regional Co-ordinators and Fettes College staff, to create, support and manage opportunities for OFs to engage with each

other and with the College. I am indebted to everyone who gives up their time to support OF events all over the UK and across the globe. OFs received their first ‘new look’ OF Newsletter last summer and in October over 220 OFs gathered for a very jovial Commemoration Weekend at the College. More details of how OFs can keep in touch and join in can be found on pages 22 and 23. My thanks also go to the many people in the Fettes Community who support the Fettes Career Partnership Programme. In 2015-16 we ran successful business networking events in Edinburgh and London and continued our support of careers education at Fettes with help from across our community. I hope you enjoy reading more about this on pages 24 and 25. I feel so very fortunate to be a part of this wonderful Fettes Community. I would encourage you to get involved when you can, in whatever way you can, to help Fettes College continue to flourish! Nicola Pickavance Director of Development

Get involved Debbie Spens and Nicola Pickavance were delighted to join FFC Inc. Trustees for their AGM in New York last April. Following the AGM, members of our US Community gathered together for the FFC Inc. Annual New York Dinner at the Yale Club which culminated in a rousing chorus of Floreas Fettesia! This year FFC Inc.’s Annual New York Dinner will take place on 28th April 2017 in the Yale Club. We are delighted that Michael and Debbie Spens will be joining Trustees for Dinner in this their final year at Fettes. Everyone is welcome, so if you happen to be in New York on that date and would like to attend, please email development@fettes.com to arrange for further details to be sent to you. If you are studying in the US, Trustees of FFC Inc. would be delighted to give you support and advice during your time in the States. If you would like to find out more, please contact development@fettes.com and we can facilitate these connections. Trustees in the US are also keen to expand their events programme. If you would like to get involved please email development@fettes.com and we will happily put you in touch with them.

Ian Mackenzie Sim (Ca 1956-1960) Very sadly, one our FFC Inc. Trustees, Ian Sim (Ca 1956-1960) pictured here in his 1st XV photo, passed away at the end of October last year. Our deepest sympathies go out to his wife Hope. Ian, a Trustee since 2011, supported FFC Inc. in engagement and fundraising efforts for a long time. In recent years, during his illness, he took more of a back seat but enjoyed receiving updates from FFC Inc. President Graham Cole. After Fettes, Ian attended Amherst College in Massachusetts and graduated in 1964. He served in the United States Army from 1967 to 1970. In 1978, Ian started the Amherst Textile Mills NYC and from 1990 until 2010 he was Director of Marketing for Standard Oil of Connecticut. He promoted rugby in the US at various functions and was one of the first graduates of Fettes to attend College in the United States. Many Fettesians have since followed in his footsteps. KEEPING IN TOUCH, GETTING INVOLVED The role of the Old Fettesian Association (OFA) is to facilitate connections, to help Old Fettesians keep in touch and to support and promote a framework of events across the globe to enable OFs to gather together. Fettes is a family for life and old school friends are special. For many at Fettes, some of those friends are like family. Whether in House, in class, in Chapel, on the pitch, at the Pavilion, in the Dining Hall, on CCF camp, in Chapel Choir or Orchestra, in the Prep School, in the House Play, you will recall where it was that you built your Fettes memories. For many, you are in touch with your closest friends, but do you ever wonder what others are doing? Those from different years, different Houses, different times? People you remember fondly but have lost touch with over the years? The OFA keeps a record of OFs and supports a network of dedicated Regional Co-ordinators who provide local support and advice to OFs and assistance in the delivery of local events. For this network to have its greatest potential, it is important for OFs to keep in touch with the OFA by providing up-to-date contact details. We love to hear Fettes Festival of Sport your news, professional information and family updates. News is published on our website fettescommunity.com Old Fettesians, current and past parents and their families gathered together in the warm sunshine at the Pavilion on and in the Old Fettesian Newsletter (if you wish). Saturday 28th May for the Fettes Festival of Sport. Up-to-date news on current pupils and staff is published on fettes.com. Teams participated in touch rugby, hockey and cricket with very well matched games, some very competitive “Seeing a certain name on the London Carol Service list and some pure fun. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed being after all these years brought back so many memories. at Fettes with their friends and family.

Liaising with the OFA office to see if he would like to get back in touch was easy. It is wonderful to be in touch again.

Old Fettesians were thrilled with the opportunity on the day to view memorabilia from the archives and amused at the forgotten images, times, faces and publications.

Children had fun spotting their parents in team and House pictures from days gone by. We were delighted to welcome so many on the day. In particular, our Cricket Captains from 1975, Alistair Darling (Ca 1970-1975), 1986, Tom Usher (JS-Gl 1979-1986) and 1994, Tom White (Ca 1989-1994) who all played on the Turf. The winning team was captained by Kit Gammell (Inv-Ki 2001-2009). Thanks must go to our valiant captains, Daniel Thain (JS-Mo 1983-1991), Archie Crawford (Gl 2003-2008), Richard Monk (JS-Ca 1982-1990) and Jonathan Norrie (JS-Gl 1981-1989) who gathered and led their teams with pride. It was really special for Former Staff to be able to join us too. We were very grateful to Mark Peel (Staff 1983-2007) for umpiring cricket matches like old times, to Jamie Frost (Staff 1993-1997) for playing cricket in one of our scratch teams and to Fergus Murray (Staff 1967-1997) and Dr Peter Coshan (Staff 1972-2005) for reminiscing with OFs and past parents alike.

London OFA Carol Service Three hundred Old Fettesians and their families signed up to come together at Christmas time for the third London OFA Carol Service. OFs from across generations sat shoulder to shoulder as a congregation in St Michael’s, Chester Square. Connected by their Fettes education and reflecting on their shared time in Chapel, those from as far back as 1949 shared pews with those who left in 2016 and many in between. This year we were particularly delighted to see several current and former staff, who bring so much nostalgia to the occasion, along with the Headmaster, Michael Spens and Debbie Spens. They were joined by Carolyn Harrison (Staff 1992-present); Mark Peel (Staff 1983-2007); Andrew Murray (Staff 1981-2003); Colin Niven (Staff 1965-1973); Richard Brett (Staff 1988-1993); Gill Fyffe (Staff 2001-2007) and Paul Cheetham (Staff 1988-2008). A Chapel Choir of 25 came together admirably quickly under the direction of David Thomas, Former Director

of Music (Staff 1993-1998). The Service was led by Revd Ashley Null (Chaplain 1994-1995) with the address by Revd Robin Weekes (JS-Mo 1983-1991). After the Service, there were reunions and first meetings as the congregation enjoyed mulled wine and mince pies, before moving on for drinks nearby. Enormous thanks must go to David Simpson (Mo 2001-2006) who kindly organised the Service.

The current OFA Office Bearers are: Andrew Pickles (Ca 1962-1967) (President) Amanda Forsyth (nĂŠe Baker) (Ar 1982-1984) (Vice President) Richard Llewellyn (Mo 1987-1992) (Hon Treasurer) Georgina Hill (CW 1990-1993) (Hon Secretary)

FETTES CAREER PARTNERSHIP PROGRAMME Members of our community support each other at every stage based on the strength of feeling that a shared Fettes education creates. Not only does our community of Old Fettesians and current and past parents play an integral part in our careers curriculum, they have also, this year, assisted us in facilitating contacts and connections for advice, internships and career changes for many OFs around the world. At Fettes, our series of informal career talks to ‘lift the lid’ on particular work areas have been gratefully received by pupils, young OFs and speakers alike. We are exceedingly appreciative to our OF and parent community for supporting events in: Finance; Digital; the Arts; Health & Medical; Sport; Communications and Energy.

“I think it is an excellent idea to get the students used to networking – to realise what a loose term it is, I was delighted to be able to help.” Current parent Face-to-face connections form an important part of the Fettes Career Partnership Programme. We have well attended regular business breakfast events in London and in Edinburgh and are looking for contacts with venues to enable us to roll these events out in other geographies. Hong Kong should have been our first of these in October 2016, however a T8 Typhoon weather warning necessitated a last minute cancellation. We are delighted that this event is rescheduled for 31st March 2017. In addition, we held an evening networking event at Skyscanner Ltd in Edinburgh for the Fettes Community and for Sixth Form pupils. This event facilitated professional networking amongst OFs and parents and gave pupils an opportunity to put their networking skills into practice.

“Striking up conversations was easy due to the Fettes connection. From a Managing Partner to a recent fellow graduate I felt confident and at ease.” OF (Ki 2003-2008) Support from the Fettes Career Partnership Programme can be particularly useful for the young OFs in our undergraduate community and for those even younger exploring university options. We can assist in finding Fettes connections for campus tours and course discussions as well as those to discuss internship opportunities with. We also visit key UK university hubs for drinks and informal career conversations with the local OF and parent community.

“Meeting people I knew from school and hearing about the transition from Fettes to university was hugely reassuring.” Sixth Form Pupil Internships are of increasing importance on a young professional’s CV. With this in mind OF Ryan Li (Gl 20102015) created a fund to support Fettesians in the Sixth Form to participate in internships through the Fettes Career Partnership Programme in Finance, Economics and Politics. This year awards were granted to Hannah Nairn (Da 2014-2016) and to Max Knight (Ki 2011-2016). Members of the Fettes Community are coming forward to offer OFs internships, which are so rewarding. If this is something that you are willing to facilitate please do get in touch.

“I was amazed to see how much support I was given by a past parent. She offered me a clinical attachment in the Western General Hospital. I had a really rewarding time there. I found the Fettes Career Partnership Programme to be a continuation of the support I was delighted to receive whilst at Fettes.” Medical Student (CW 2010-2012)
