Fettes Foundation Impact Report 2024

Page 1

Thank You from The Head

As we head towards a challenging period for independent schools, the support of the Fettes community is invaluable. The Fettes Foundation will be ever more important in the years ahead as we deliver on our plans for the students and school.

I want to say thank you to everyone – parents, Old Fettesians, former staff and friends of Fettes - who chooses to give back in recognition of what a Fettes education means. Whether that is financially through generous donations to the Fettes Foundation, or through volunteering your time to build our Old Fettesian network or Career Partnership programme, I am truly grateful.

This report is a reflection of the generosity, dedication and kindness that our community fosters, from supporting students on bursaries to providing inspiring careers advice for those planning their futures.

Donors and volunteers make a real difference. You are part of what makes Fettes the special place it is today. However, Fettes does not stand still, and the ongoing backing of our community is vital in helping us achieve our ambitions as we move forward and seek to remain the school of choice.

Thank you again for making 2023-24 a successful year, which you can read more about in the pages ahead. Your continued encouragement is so appreciated.

Transformational Bursary Support

Foundation donors play an important role in supporting our bursary programme. In 2023-24 we received generous donations to support students on bursaries across the school.

Current bursary award holder Edward reflects on the impact of his time at Fettes and the difference your giving makes:

As I come into my last year at Fettes, I have truly taken a different perspective on this great opportunity I have been granted as a bursary recipient. I still remember the joy 13-year-old me felt knowing that I could attend such a great school. Here at Fettes from the first day I arrived, I have been given confidence within the classroom and on the hockey pitch to perform to the best of my ability. I have always been encouraged to grasp the vast number of opportunities this school has to offer and for that I am truly grateful.

My love for hockey has been encouraged, enabling me to further develop my skill level through not only the great facilities at Fettes, such as the McMurray Astro, but also the amazing coaching staff I have been surrounded by. Balancing hockey training and schoolwork has required me to improve my time management skills, supported by teachers who took the time to help me.

Edward

My favourite part of being a Fettesian is boarding. Boarding has taught me so many key life skills, even ones so simple such as laundry and the effort that goes into tidying! It has given me friends who I’m sure I will have for life. But more importantly it has taught me key virtues. Every morning my Housemaster, Mr McCowan Hill, told us his 3 non- negotiables: be KIND, TOLERANT and HARD WORKING. These are values that I feel everyone should aspire to have. Fettes to me feels like my second home and I am sure I will miss it when I leave Upper Sixth.

In the future, I am hoping to study physiotherapy at university. Physiotherapy is a degree in which I feel Fettes has prepared me for. To be a physio, people often think you must be a people person. If you would

I can confidently say when I first joined Fettes, I was a shy young teenager who could barely look people in the eye, but I feel that Fettes has built my confidence up and made me a confident young man, who holds close the values of kindness, tolerance and hard work.

Finally, I just want to say thank you to Fettes Foundation donors for helping to make my Fettes experience, and the experience of so many other bursary award holders, possible.

Projects

In 2023-24, a number of Foundation donors chose to direct their gifts towards specific projects, some of which are featured here. We are hugely grateful for these contributions which help us deliver the best experience that we can to students at Fettes.

Sports GPS Trackers

“The GPS trackers have been an absolute game changer for our students and coaches and there have been multiple benefits. The GPS data allows players to compare their performances with teammates and has created a much more competitive culture within our sports teams. Sharing and discussing the data has fostered a sense of camaraderie and team cohesion.

Players are celebrating each other’s achievements which has had a fantastic impact on motivation and has encouraged a culture of learning. We receive key pieces of data that we can use alongside data from the video footage from matches and this has allowed players and coaches to highlight clear strengths and weaknesses with individuals and teams.”

Dave Allan, Head of Athletic Development

Refurbishment of History Study Area

“The History office has been a great space for me to use. With the Lower Sixth being required to work around school during their free periods, this means that traditional spaces such as the library were overwhelmed with students. As a History student the office provides a small, productive and helpful environment for me to be able to complete my work outside of class. Being surrounded by History students means any discussion is likely productive and on the odd occasion of a History teacher working in the space, this provides me with a great opportunity to ask questions and seek support. I am grateful for the department and the school for investing in this space through Foundation donations, and I continue to use it on a daily basis.

Sixth Student

“The bikes have been a huge hit in Arran and are used incredibly frequently! You will often see Arran boys exploring our wonderful campus after 6pm on weekdays and throughout the weekends. Teamwork, leadership and fitness

levels have all improved, let alone the boys getting to know our campus incredibly well, which will only help them as they move into the senior school.”

Practice Oxbridge Interviews

We are very thankful to the parents, Old Fettesians and teachers who help us every year with Practice Oxbridge Interviews. In 2023-24, 44 applicants from Fettes and local Edinburgh schools were interviewed.

“I found the interview enormously beneficial. I felt it challenged me and gave me a realistic expectation about how the real interview would be conducted. I am enormously grateful for this opportunity.”

Higher Education & Careers Expo

In addition to speaking to representatives from almost 40 universities and organisations, 300 students from Fettes and local Edinburgh schools greatly appreciated the opportunity to explore career paths with

“My son found this particularly useful and talked to quite a few experts.”

40 industry experts from our supportive alumni and parent community.

Experts represented a huge range of career areas from technology to medicine and international development to product design.

“Very good interaction and good networking.”

There are more than 2,400 users on fettescommunity.org and 39% are willing to help with advice, mentoring or internships at various stages of the career journey. Thank you to those who are supporting others in the community by doing this.

The Fettes Community

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the many volunteers who help to keep the Fettes family connected across the world. Without their loyal support, Fettes would not have the warm and vibrant network to make our community feel welcome, wherever they live, work or travel.

Highlights of the year for the Old Fettesian Association included a sold-out Commemoration Weekend, the 150th anniversary of Glencorse House, the London Carol Service and many global events along with the delivery of over 6,000 copies of the OF Newsletter by post or email. Gifts in Wills

Gifts in wills are incredibly special to Fettes, and they provide the opportunity for donors to have a lasting impact on future generations.

In 2023-24, the Fettes Foundation received gifts in wills that supported bursaries, trips and tours for bursary students, and unrestricted funds to be used where the College needs it most. These donations will make a real difference to Fettesians and towards the education we are able to provide.

Remembering the Fettes Foundation (charity no. SC028350) in your will is a simple, tax-efficient way to recognise what Fettes means to you. After taking care of loved ones, if you would like to give something back through a gift in your will, please ask your solicitor for help with this.

We are so grateful to those who choose to leave a gift, of whatever size or type, in their will – thank you.

A Lasting Legacy –

Allardice Centre

We are hugely excited that construction work will begin this year on our new Wellbeing Centre, made possible through a generous legacy from an Old Fettesian, David Allardice (Mo 1978-1984).

The Wellbeing Centre will improve our health and wellbeing facilities and provide a place for innovative and proactive learning about life skills. This new facility will take the traditional Medical Centre out of the main building and bring the school’s medical and other pastoral care facilities together in a purposeful single-story building.

Having a dedicated space as a hub for our wellbeing activities, additional support services and experienced medical team will allow us to fulfil the ambitions we have to be a world-leader in pastoral care.

The impact of this gift will be transformational.

Giving Your Support

The Fettes Foundation raises philanthropic funds to benefit Fettes and its students. We greatly value our donors who make this happen and who care deeply about the future of Fettes. If you would like to continue your giving or make a new gift to support Fettes, please see below on how to do this:
