Fettes College Art Department Artist-in-residence Programme



Fettes College Artist-in-residence Programme offers a unique opportunity to develop a body of work with access to excellent facilities within the Art Department. The successful applicant will benefit from a dedicated studio space and access to the department throughout the year including school holidays.


Fettes College is a leading HMC co-educational boarding and day school close to the heart of Edinburgh. It has a strong tradition of academic, sporting and cultural excellence underpinned by outstanding pastoral care. Fettes opened its doors in 1870 and became fully co-educational in 1980: it is now an Independent school of some 770 boys and girls. There are 580 pupils in the Senior School (13-18 years) and 190 pupils in the Preparatory School (7-13 years). The academic staff in the College consists of the Head and 90 full-time members of the Common Room. Our Prep School shares the same site and consists of a further 29 full-time teaching staff. The School stands on a magnificent site of approximately 100 acres, but still within walking distance of Edinburgh’s city centre. The historic main building holds the Chapel, Library, the English, Classics and History Departments as well as the Medical Centre and two boarding houses. A large newly built teaching block (the Spens Building) houses Art, Modern Languages, Mathematics, Economics, Geography, and Music. The Theatre, Science Laboratories and Dining Hall are adjacent. The Preparatory School and seven further boarding houses (including a purpose-built U6th House) are also on the campus. Our sports facilities (including extensive playing fields, two all-weather pitches and a private Health Club) are excellent. As well as our teaching staff we employ over 220 Non-Teaching Staff across the many departments, including; Estates, Security, Housekeeping, Finance, Admissions and Marketing with a pervading sense of community amongst staff, pupils and parents alike.

Fettes College Artist-in-residence Fettes College Artist-in-residence Programme offers a unique opportunity to develop a body of work with access to excellent facilities within the Art Department. The successful applicant will benefit from a dedicated studio space and access to the department throughout the year including school holidays. The Art department has well equipped specialist spaces for printmaking, ceramics and sculpture and an excellent dark room. There is a very good specialist library as well as computers and printing facilities. There are three full time Art teachers and two technicians in the department. The post is 2.5 days per week with an expectation that the resident will, for a portion of the week – up to 5 hours - work alongside teaching staff, contributing to studio critiques with 6th Form art students. There will also be opportunities to gain other experience, such as offering workshops, giving presentations, teaching Life Drawing etc.


The vision we have for the residency is for an exciting and energetic artist to inhabit the department, working in any of our studios, interacting with students and contributing ideas and new skills. The resident has the opportunity to mount two exhibitions during the year, one at the end of the first term - a work in progress show, and a final show in the summer term. Previous residents have also curated shows by other artists/groups of artists in the gallery spaces. We invite applications from current final year students or recent graduates (within five years) from BA or MA courses in Art and Design. The salary is £10,000 for the academic year (September to June), with an additional £1,000 available specifically for the purchase of consumable art materials.




Conditions of the Appointment • The appointment will be from the start of the Autumn Term 2021 and will run until end June 2022 (10 months). • Salary will be £1,000 per month and will depend on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. Other details and conditions of service will be discussed at interview.
