Summer Special 2022
Life at Fettes Prep School should always be about happiness, fun and fulfilment. The busy lives of the children are full of aspiration and ambition, but this is all built on the strong foundation of friendship and kindness. Adam Edwards Headmaster, Fettes Prep School
A Note from the Editor
In this edition of the Busy Bee, we celebrate a fabulous Summer Term which has been full of endeavour, fun and laughter. This term is the last for our 2nd Form leavers, who have so much to look forward to on the rest of their Fettes journey, and also for Mr and Mrs Edwards, after 19 years at the helm of Fettes Prep. Here we take an abridged look at the term’s events, look back at the Edwards’ contribution and look forward to the arrival of Charlie and Becky Minogue. LIFE
School Life
We are so proud of our community at Fettes Prep. Whether we are working together to help the environment, raising funds for charity, sharing special occasions, or supporting each other in and out of the classroom, the pupils, staff, parents, and governors make a formidable team! Thanks to everyone’s generosity we raised over £16,000 during the Fettes Run, Parents Social Evening and Earth Day. During the last week of the Summer Term, we packed our bags and headed off for a variety of day and overnight trips. This year M and P went to East Links, S Form enjoyed a Wild Outdoor Camp in Lauder, T Form had fun on Portobello Beach, 1st Form spent a night at Aberfoyle and 2nd Form headed to Port Edgar and Yellowcraig Beach.
Boarding Life
It has been another busy term in both boarding houses, with everyone showing maximum commitment all the way through to the end of term. There have been trips, treats and fun aplenty but the highlight weekend was the Arran House Challenge and Iona Adventure. Whilst Iona House ventured south, crossing the border for some wild camping, hostelling and a visit to an incredibly special bookshop, Arran House went north to the Firth of Lorne where they had a fabulous time sailing, white-water rafting, and cruising through the world’s third biggest whirlpool, The Corryvreckan.
The Arts We experienced a very vibrant term in the Arts. We were so delighted to perform three nights of the 1st and 2nd Forms’ dramatic version of Macbeth to a live audience. It was wonderful to be back in Stockbridge Church to share our rousing Summer Concert with prep families and the beautiful end of year Art Exhibition was open to visitors too.
Sports 2022 saw Fettes Prep move to cricket as the major summer game for all the children. In the younger years, the teams were mixed, bringing fun to entire year groups as they played together. There was plenty of competition against other schools with impressive results but the main focus for all the children was participation and enjoyment, which was very much in evidence throughout the term.
The Scottish Prep Schools Invitational Athletics Championships took place on a blustery Sunday afternoon and despite the weather conditions it proved to be another fabulous showcase of prep school athletics. Courtesy of our Savills sponsorship, the extra family fun included an ice cream van and bouncy castles.
End of Term Events Term ended in a flurry of fabulous events. The weather was kind, so our Entertainments Evening and Sports Day were celebrated in the sunshine and by the time the rain came on Founders Eve, we were safely ensconced in the Prizegiving marquee!
Farewells – 2nd Form Leavers We have enjoyed an amazing final term, full of fun reminiscences, lots of laughter and celebrations of all our leavers. This is a momentous time for our 2nd Form pupils as they come to the end of their Prep School years and look ahead to life in the Senior School, where they will find friends old and new awaiting them next term.
Edwards Leaving After 19 years, Adam and Jill Edwards left Fettes Prep this summer. As well as presiding over a growth in numbers during his tenure, Adam pioneered subject specialist teaching for all our pupils who also benefitted from the expertise of a dedicated Prep staff team. Adam oversaw many important improvements at the Prep School with the hugely successful development of bespoke classrooms and learning facilities in William House together with the creation of the very well used all weather play area. In addition, upgrades were made to boarding facilities in both Prep boarding houses and the most recent development in the school garden. Jill was a very dedicated Head of Modern Languages and brought the French language alive for so many Fettesians through a combination of fun lessons, and the fabulous French and Choir Trips. Adam and Jill were a marvellous team and their first and last thoughts were always for the welfare of each and every pupil at our school. We said goodbye with the grateful thanks and very best wishes of the entire Fettes community.
We wish Adam and Jill Edwards and all of 2nd Form the best of luck as they move on. We look forward to an exciting new chapter with Charlie and Becky Minogue, our new starters and the whole Prep community in the forthcoming Autumn Term.
