Maintenance Electrician

THE ROLE Uses a working knowledge of electrical systems to conduct maintenance, faultfinding, and diagnostics on existing systems. Install new electrical systems, including lighting and heating, to College standards and to maintain those systems while upholding safety guidelines and complying with codes and regulations


Electrician Job Duties • • • • • • • • • • •

Diagnose and repair electrical problems in commercial and domestic electrical systems, including fault-finding, rewiring, and monitoring Assess the parts needed for a job and request those parts Conduct routine maintenance and testing on commercial and domestic electrical systems, and ensure installations are to manufacturer standards. Rewire faulty electrical systems, such as lighting, heating systems, and access control Ensure good quality workmanship which upholds College standards, complies with building codes, and follows safety requirements. Work alone to find and present faults and concerns in electrical systems without receiving explicit direction. Provide exceptional customer service and answer any customer questions Install electrical systems to 18th edition wiring regulations. Provide professional assessments and advice for the Head of Maintenance/Estates Manager Possess working knowledge of IEE regulations, City & Guilds 2360 and 2382 qualifications, and inspection and testing certificate (2391) Demonstrate familiarity with NICEIC requirements

General • Undertake day to day maintenance routines and tasks such as, but not limited to, • Electrical repairs/testing to properties belonging to the college • Identifying maintenance that is required either reactive or routine • Adherence and compliance to scheduled mandatory and legal protocol. • All supplies where required are requested in a timely manner. • All reasonable requests issued by the Head of Maintenance or Estates Manager. Performance and Customer Service • Understand the Schools’ and trading subsidiaries’ legal and mandatory requirements to ensure compliance in the appointed areas. • Accurately ensure any required data is recorded in the College systems for compliance and regulation in a timely and structured manner. • Regularly check the condition of all equipment and tools supplied for the role. • Make sure all maintenance tasks are completed in a timely fashion and left in safe and appropriate state. • Liaise regularly with the Head of Maintenance to ensure needs are being addressed.


• Always represent the college in a professional way, adhering to all College policies and procedures as detailed in the Enchiridion (Staff Handbook). Supplies and Equipment • Maintain supplies and equipment to a high standard. • Ensure the safe use and maintenance of equipment, making sure any training requirement is highlighted to the Head of Maintenance. Training and accreditation • Ensure appropriate training and tickets are up to date and appropriate for the tasks being completed. • Attend regular staff meetings and 1-2-1 with line manager. PERSON SPECIFICATION Skills and Qualifications • Extensive previous electrical experience, lighting, wiring, access systems • Strong written and verbal communication • Electrical maintenance • Customer service skills • Able to carry out risk assessments • Electrician apprenticeship • Diagnostics and fault-finding experience • Organised and able to plan work effectively • Able to work on own initiative and take responsibility for own safety and work output Personal Qualities • Pro-active and motivated. • Enthusiastic and approachable. • Willingness to apply oneself to all manner of challenges. • Take on tasks as required within a small team. • Confident and friendly. BENEFITS The remuneration package will be competitive and will, to an extent, depend on the experience of the successful candidate. You will be entitled to 30 days’ holiday during the School Year (September to August) plus 8 designated public holidays.


You will be opted into the Fettes Trust Non-Teaching Staff Pension Scheme after 3 months service. This scheme is a money purchase one and full details of it and your options will be made available to you prior to your opt-in date. The Fettes Trust will contribute to the scheme and your contribution will be subject to the minimum overall combined employer and employee contribution limits set by the Pensions Regulator. Further details will be outlined in the contract of employment. In addition, a pension matching scheme is in operation up to 10%. Lunchtime meals may be taken in the Dining Hall free of charge during term time and when catering is provided and you are on duty. Parking is free of charge within the campus grounds. Gym membership at Westwoods, Death in Service cover and an exceptional Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) are also available. ABOUT FETTES Fettes College is a leading HMC co-educational boarding and day school close to the heart of Edinburgh. It has a strong tradition of academic, sporting and cultural excellence underpinned by outstanding pastoral care. Fettes opened its doors in 1870 and became fully co-educational in 1980: it is now an independent school of some 800 students. There are 598 students in the Senior School (13-18 years) and 202 students in the Preparatory School (7-13 years). The academic staff in the College consists of the Head and 91 full-time members of the Common Room. Our Prep School shares the same site and consists of a further 29 full-time teaching staff. The school stands on a magnificent site of approximately 100 acres, but still within walking distance of Edinburgh’s city centre. The historic main building holds the Chapel, Library, the English, Classics and History Departments as well as the Medical Centre and two boarding houses. A large newly built teaching block (the Spens Building) houses Art, Modern Languages, Mathematics, Economics, Geography, and Music. The Theatre, Science Laboratories and Dining Hall are adjacent. The Preparatory School and seven further boarding houses (including a purpose-built U6th House) are also on the campus. Our sports facilities (including extensive playing fields, two all-weather pitches and a private Health Club) are excellent. As well as our teaching staff we employ over 220 Non-Teaching Staff across the many departments, including Estates, Security, Housekeeping, Finance, Human Resources, Admissions and Marketing with a pervading sense of community amongst staff, students and parents alike.
