GERALD DEWSBURY

Ar y Trac / On The Line

Odan llethrau Gogleddol mynyddoedd Yr Arenig mae’r hen rheilffordd darfodedig a fu’n rhedeg rhwng Bala a Ffestiniog. Dechreuwyd y gwaith ar y rheilffordd ym 1873, agorodd ym 1882 a rhedodd nes 1961, pan foddwyd Dyffryn Tryweryn i greu Llyn Celyn.

Running below the Northern slopes of the Arenig mountain range is the course of the now defunct railway from Bala to Ffestiniog. The building of the line began in 1873, and was fully opened in 1882, running until 1961 when the Tryweryn valley was flooded to create Llyn Celyn.

Mae’r rheilffordd yn parhau yn atgofion a meddyliau nifer o’r trigolion lleol… teithio i’r ysgol rhwng Capel Celyn a’r Bala…cludo’r gwenithfaen o chwarel Yr Arenig…a hyd yn oed ymweldiadau’r artistiaid JD Innes ac Augustus John wrth iddynt ddefnyddio’r rheilffordd i gyrraedd yr ardal hudolus ond anghysbell yma yn y 1900au cynnar.

The railway is a memory still lingering in the minds of many local people... the school journeys from Capel Celyn to Bala...the transporting of granite from Arenig Quarry...and even the visits of artists J D Innes and Augustus John in the early1900s, who used this line to access this remote but alluring part of Wales.

Mae Gerald wedi ymweld a rhan byr o’r rheilffordd, tair milltir rhwng Pont Aberderfel lle mae’r trac yn diflannu i’r llyn a Nant Ddu droeon dros cyfnod o naw mis, heb weld braidd neb – ffarmwr efallai, neu ambell gerddwr, neu peiriannydd teliffon. Lle unig ydyw er gwaetha’ rhu’r traffig ar yr A4212 gerllaw, a’r clindarddach a’r hisio sy’n dod o’r peilonau sy’n gorymdeithio lawr Dyffryn Tryweryn. Mae Gerald yn sylwi ar y manylion ar hyd y rheilffordd, yn dal rhai o’r siapau hynod sy’n ymddangos…y mwsog, y cen, a llysiau’r afu yn gorchuddio popeth mewn mantell werdd; a’r coed Bedw, Helyg, Ddraenen Wen a Cherddinen sy’n llwyddo i oroesi holl ymosodiadau’r tywydd a’r defaid. Maent yn cymryd ffurfiau llawn mynegiant a drama sy’n creu cynefinau newydd yng nghysgod eu tyfiant arteithiedig. “Mwynhewch y daith!” Ganed Gerald ym 1957 ac astudiodd yng Ngholeg Celf Falmouth. Fe’i ddenwyd i Ogledd Cymru gan y tirwedd. Mae ei waith yn ymddangos mewn nifer o gasgliadau cyhoeddus a phreifat. Mae e’n byw ger Corwen.

Gerald has visited a short three mile section of the line between Pont Aberderfel where the line disappears into the lake and Nant Ddu, repeatedly over nine months, rarely encountering anyone – a farmer perhaps, or the occasional walker, or a telephone engineer. It is a solitary place despite the roar of the traffic on the A4212 and the crackling and hissing from the pylons marching down the Tryweryn Valley. Gerald takes note of all the small details along the line, capturing some of the strange and fantastic shapes that emerge...Mosses, lichens and liverworts abound, clothing everything in a green mantle; some trees survive – mainly Birch, Willow, Hawthorn and Rowan, their growth tempered by the weather and the sheep. They take on expressive, theatrical forms and create new environments within their tortured growth. “ Enjoy the journey!” Gerald was born in 1957 and studied at the Falmouth School of Art. He was drawn to North Wales by the landscape. His work appears in many public and private collections. He lives near Corwen.
