GARETH THOMAS Rydym yn falch i gael casgliad newydd o waith Gareth yma yn Ffin y Parc. Unwaith eto mae e wedi creu casgliad o baentiadau wedi’u rhannu rhwng Cymru a Ffrainc sy’n dal y gwahaniaethau yn y golau a’r tirwedd. Mae e’n gweithio in situ. Mae’r gwaith yn llawn uniongyrchedd ac oriogrwydd, ac yn dal yr egni a’r angen i ddal y foment – y foment hon, cyn iddi adael. Y gwres a’r goleuni yn dianc o’r awyr wrth i’r cyfnos amgau, neu’r llacharedd dros y caeau lafant cyn iddynt ddechrau dirgrynu yn y tes…
We are pleased to have a new collection of Gareth’s work here at Ffin y Parc. Once again he has made a collection of landscapes divided between Wales and France, catching the differences in light and landscape. He works in situ. Speed and immediacy is always present in the work, giving it energy, the sense of catching the moment – this moment, before it is gone. The heat and light draining from the sky as dusk approaches, or the glare over the lavender fields as they prepare to start shimmering in the haze… Gareth was born in Swansea in 1955, and since he began painting in 1979, he has built a reputation as one of Wales’ most collectable artists. He is represented in many public and private collections.

IAN H WATKINS Ar ol ei sioe llwyddianus gyda ni llynedd, rydym yn falch i groesawu Ian yn ol gyda chasgliad newydd o waith. Yn ddiweddar symudodd Ian yn ol i Dde Cymru ar ol byw yma am gyfnod, ac mae’r paentiadau yma’n mynegi ei ymateb i dirwedd Gogledd Cymru wrth feddwl am baratoi ei adael. Mae gan y gwaith naws llym a phruddglwyfus, wedi eu stripio’n ol i’w elfennau hanfodol: goleuni, dwr, y graig a’r llinell wastad-bresennol rhwng y mynyddoedd a’r awyr. Mae nifer o’r paentiadau yn llawn gwacter ac unigedd, teimlad sy’n cael ei ddwysau trwy ddefnydd palet cyfyng, wedi ei channu. Ond mae agwedd yr artist i’r tawelwch a’r unigedd yn amwys: ceir yma lloches a charchar. Ganed Ian yn Y Rhondda ym 1976.
After his successful debut show with us last year, we are pleased to have a new collection of Ian’s work. Ian recently returned to South Wales after living here for several years, and these paintings are a response to the North Wales landscape while contemplating departure. Much of the work has an austere, melancholic quality and is stripped to its basic elements: light, water, rock and the ever- present line between the mountains and the sky. There is an emptiness and desolation in many of the paintings, emphasised by the limited, bleached palate. But the artist’s attitude to this silence and solitude is ambivalent: it is both haven and prison. Ian was born in The Rhondda in 1976.

JOHN WYNNE MORRIS Ganed John yn Waunfawr, ac ar ol astudio yn Wrecsam, Stoke a Lerpwl mae e wedi cael gyrfa hir fel artist a dylunydd, yn gweithio mewn serameg yn ogystal a phaentio. Mae e yn awr yn byw ger lannau’r Conwy, yn edrych dros yr afon wrth iddi lithro heibio. Mae e’n adnabod y tirwedd yn drylwyr ac yn ei baentio’n awchus, ond hefyd yn gynnil. Gyda’i balet tawel a’i linellau tyner mae e’n creu gwaith sy’n goeth ac yn gain. Does dim brysio yma, ond gydag amynedd mae e’n cymell y golygfeydd yma i ddatgelu eu prydferthwch a’u angerdd, gan adael iddynt agor iddo. Mae John yn deall y golygfeydd yma ac yn gwerthfawrogi eu cyfnoday tawel a’u tymherau rhadlon. Mae’r gwaith canlyniadol yn fyfyrgar, yn urddasol ac yn hiraethlon.
John was born in Waunfawr, and after studying in Wrexham, Stoke and Liverpool he has had a long career as an artist and designer, working with ceramics as well as painting. He now lives near the banks of the Conwy, overlooking the river as it glides by. It is a landscape that he knows intimately and he paints it with passion, but also with restraint. With his calm, muted palate and gentle lines he makes work which is delicate and elegant. There is no rushing here, but patiently he coaxes these views to yield their beauty and intensity, letting them come to him. John has known these scenes long enough to appreciate their quiet moments and benevolent humours. The resulting work is contemplative, dignified and nostalgic.
