Parks & Rec

Connected Welcome Back Fairfax City Residents! From all the staff at Parks and Recreation we are thrilled to be back in-person at all our facilities this fall. In addition, our Parks and Rec Connected printed brochure should have made it’s way to your mailbox for the first time in over a year! While the last 15 months have been a challenge for everyone, it’s great to know that our residents were able to rely on our parks and trail system to help get through the pandemic. Now we are looking forward to a full slate of classes, programs and events in all our facilities! Among those that have waited the longest to return to in-person programs are our seniors. Green Acres will be opening fully on Tuesday, September 7th. There will be a few new highlights at the center including a Game Room and new doors that will help separate the Senior Center and Main Street Child Development Center. Finally, a couple new and old faces have joined our staff at the center. As these changes are finalized the fitness center will open a few weeks earlier on August 9th with limited hours, Monday-Friday, 8am-noon. Special events in the City returned with a rockin’ crowd at the June Rock the Block and with a huge bang at the July 4th parade and fireworks. This fall will see the return of the Fall Festival, Holiday Craft Show, Festival of Lights and Carols and the Holiday Market at Old Town Square along with Rock the Block on the forth Fridays through October.

Happenings Welcome (Back), Carter! Welcome to our newest staff member in the Parks and Recreation Department! We are excited to have Kathy Carter back on staff in her new role as Assistant Senior Center Coordinator. She brings her energy and new ideas to this position! She has 5 years of experience with the Senior Center as the former Trip Chaperone. Not only did Kathy plan and take fabulous trips with seniors, she was also a part-time on call member of the staff and assisted in many other duties and projects. Kathy in her new role will now be involved in all the aspects of programming the senior center and assisting with Adult and Senior classes. Kathy loves watching and attending sporting events and is the only UNC Tarheel in a family of UVA Wahoos. Both of her sons work in New York and her daughter is in her final year of nursing school. If asked, she says her favorite child is her 4 year-old Bernedoodle. In her free time, she enjoys golf, oil painting, flower gardening and spending time with her family.

HAPPENINGS

Celebrate in Fairfax City!

Was your graduation party cancelled due to COVID-19? Was your birthday last year a bit of a bummer? Did your wedding get delayed due to the pandemic? Persevering through these unexpected conditions has been tough on all of us. The anticipation of when we can safely coordinate our first get-together, party, or function has been nerve wracking, to say the least. Luckily, the wait is over! The rental venues in the City of Fairfax are now back in full swing. As of May, 28 our four sites are back to offering full capacity for your cherished events. Despite this only being the case for a short while, the excitement amongst our loyal renters has been absolutely palpable. Who isn’t ready to get out of the house, be entertained, socialize in-person, or just have some good old fun? If any of those notions apply to you, then please check out the marvelous facilities offered right here in your own community on our website. We have quite the variety of spaces and are able to accommodate just about any type of event. The Sherwood Center offers a 5,000 square-foot ballroom (the Performance Space) for very large events. The Green Acres Center has just the right option for your budget-friendly events. Historic Blenheim and the Old Town Hall are both historic sites that provide the perfect bit of charm for any style of party. Please note that the Old Town Hall is currently undergoing some renovations to the front porch. That being said, the building is perfectly safe structurally and we are gladly accepting reservations. Of course, the front entrance is currently inaccessible which means all guests would need to enter from one of the two side entrances. For that reason, we are offering the space at 25% off of the normal hourly rate until the work is complete. SECURE YOUR RESERVATION TODAY! For more information on our rental venues visit:

Happenings City Bike Plan Rolls Forward The ‘Bike Fairfax City’ bicycle transportation plan has been developed to help the City identify and prioritize projects to connect the City’s network of on and off-street bicycle facilities. The City worked closely with the community to identify gaps and to prioritize projects to connect and expand the bicycle network. On June 22, 2021 the City Council adopted the ‘Fairfax City Bike Plan’. This plan includes several recommended paths that were carried forward from the 2014 Parks and Recreation Master Plan. It also includes a few other new trail connections through the Northfax Activity Center and new connections to Van Dyck Park. Also approved on June 22, 2021 was a ‘Two Year Program’ that allows applications to be submitted for funding for the John Mason Trail and Snyder Trail Connection to the Wilcoxon Trail. Find out more about the Fairfax City Bike Plan at www.fairfaxva.gov/bikeplan

GRAMMY Award-winning conductor, violinist, and violist Pinchas Zukerman, and Canadian Juno Award-winning cellist Amanda Forsyth join forces with the Jerusalem Quartet for a trio of radiant Romantic-era works by Bruckner, Dvorák, and Brahms. Highly accomplished and much in demand in their own right, the husband and wife duo of Zukerman and Amanda Forsyth create a sextet with the four Israeli artists in a dazzling display of virtuosity.
