WE’RE GOING STREAKING FGCU has not lost a home game in Alico Arena since January 8, 2009 against East Tennessee State University. FGCU’s 57-45 win over Kennesaw St. (Jan. 15) bumped the Eagles home win streak to 31 games. FGCU’s 31-game home winning streak is the third longest streak in the nation behind UConn and Stanford. HOME COOKIN’ Alico Arena has become one of the most intimidating places for opposing teams in all of Division I women’s basketball. The Eagles have accumulated a 48-3 record on their home court since moving to Division I, good for a .941 winning percentage. Only Tennessee, who has a .944 winning percentage (334-20), has a higher all-time winning percentage at home (Thompson-Boling Arena). ALLOW ME TO REINTRODUCE MYSELF Sarah Hansen signed with FGCU on April 27, 2009, but utilized a redshirt during the 2009-10 season. Hansen took all of last season to work on her game and become acclimated and comforable in Coach Smesko’s offense and it’s paying dividends in 2010-11. Hansen currently ranks first on the team in field goal pct. (.535) and rebounds (6.5 rpg), while ranking second in scoring (13.1 ppg). The redshirt-freshman’s .535 shooting percentage leads the A-Sun and ranks her 37th in the nation. 8 MINUTES OF PAIN Over their last seven contests, the Eagles have used runs from the 16-minute mark to the 8-minute mark of the first half to pull away from their opponents. The Blue and Green have outscored the opposition 143-90 over the last eight games during that eightminute span. FGCU IN JANUARY • FGCU has an all-time record of 63-7 (.900) in games played in the month of January. • Since moving to Division I in 2007-08 the Eagles hold a 27-5 (.844) record in the month of January, all versus Atlantic Sun conference opponents.

NATION’S BEST FGCU’s three-point prowess has been the program’s calling card from day one and the 2010-11 version of the Eagles is no different. Through its first 12 games, FGCU leads the nation with an average of 11.3 threes per game, a full trifecta in front of second place Fresno State (10.2). As a team, FGCU has sank double-digit threes in nine games this season, including 78 over its last five contests. Even more impressive, the Eagles have shot over 44 percent from long range in five of those games. RANK 1. 2. 3. 4.

THREE IS THE KEY · The Eagles are 11-0 this season when shooting 23 or more three-pointers. · The Blue and Green are 13-0 on the year when they drain five or more shots from beyond the arc. · FGCU is also undefeated in 2010-11 when they knock down more threepoint shots than their opponent. · Nine of the 11 players who have seen time this season have at least two threes.
RAPID FIRE Surrounding its opponents with a balanced scoring attack, FGCU has knocked down 147 threes this season compared to just 58 from its opponents. Led by junior Kelsey Jacobson’s 3.38 trifectas per contest, five different players have made 11 or more shots from long range. Senior Shannon Murphy is fifth in the A-Sun in threes per game (2.08), while Eglah Griffin (1.69) is 13th. FGCU is the only team in the A-Sun with three players in the top 15 in three-pointers made. MAKING A LIVING FROM LONG RANGE It’s no secret that junior Kelsey Jacobson is FGCU’s top three-point threat. Through 73 career games, Jacobson has knocked down 197 three-pointers to rank second all-time behind Candy Myers’ (2003-06) 212. Jacobson has made a three in 29 straight games, 46 of her last 47 contests and 68 of 73 for her career. During her career, Jacobson has made 3+ threes 38 times, 5+ threes on 10 occasions and a career-best of six twice. 3’S PLEASE! In the program’s nine-year history (259) games, FGCU has made at least one three-pointer in 258 contests, including 146 straight. The last and lone time the Eagles didn’t knock down a three was February 21, 2006 at Lynn. During the current 146-game run, the Blue and Green have knocked down 1,378 money balls while their opponents have knocked down 728 threes. In games that it has drained double-digit threes, FGCU is 91-6 all-time and 46-4 since moving to Division I in 2007-08.
LEADER OF THE PACK With 44 of her 52 made field goals come from beyond the arc this season, junior Kelsey Jacobson ranks first in the A-Sun at 3.38 treys per game. Jacobson has knocked down 44-of-116 three-pointers this season to also rank eighth in the league at a 37.9 clip. The Barnesville, Minn. native has made multi-threes in 12 straight games, highlighted by a 6-of-7 night against FIU that tied a career-high for makes.
NATIONAL RECOGNITION
FGCU RANKED #3 IN MID-MAJOR POLL; PICK UP 2 1ST PLACE VOTES After extending their winning streak to 12 games with a 77-70 win over ETSU on Jan. 8, the Florida Gulf Coast women’s basketball team earned the No. 3 spot in the CollegeInsider.com Women’s Mid-Major Top 25 poll, announced on Tuesday, Jan. 11. The Blue and Green received two of the 31 first place votes, while Green Bay (28) and Bowling Green (1), the only squads ranked higher than the Eagles, accounted for the other 29 first place votes.
NATIONAL RECOGNITION The FGCU women’s basketball team received 16 votes in this week’s USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches’ Poll and also picked up one vote in the AP Top 25 Poll that was released on Tuesday, Jan. 11. This marks the third time in program history that the Eagles have earned votes in both polls in the same week. It is also the fifth consecutive week that the Eagles have earned at least one vote in the USA Today/ESPN poll. FGCU earned six votes in last week’s poll (Jan. 4). The Blue and Green’s one vote in the AP Poll is the sixth time in program history and third time this season that they have received votes in the national poll. FGCU received one vote in the 2009-10 AP Preseason Top 25 and also picked up a vote in back-to-back weeks in the AP Top 25 to close out the 2008-09 season.

GETTIN’ LOVE FROM ESPN.COM ESPN women’s basketball writer Graham Hays placed the Eagles in the No. 7 spot on his Mid-Major top-10 rankings as part of his Jan. 4 blog entry. In his blog, Hays, who is an editor for ESPN.com’s SportsNation and writes for Page 2 and contributes to ESPN.com’s women’s basketball, softball and soccer coverage, says: 7. Florida Gulf Coast (10-0) A 13-day holiday break between games didn’t seem to leave Florida Gulf Coast showing much rust in a 79-39 win against Belmont on Jan. 3 to open conference play in the Atlantic Sun. The Eagles have one of the more pronounced turnover differentials in the nation (they have 23 more assists than turnovers; their opponents have 126 more turnovers than assists). Along those lines, Tom Brady has nothing on Kelsey Jacobson when it comes to taking care of the ball. In 325 minutes in which the sharpshooter has launched 97 shots and assisted on 24 field goals, she has turned the ball over just six times. The teams ranked above the Eagles are (in order of ranking): Xavier, Marist, Bowling Green, Green Bay, Gonzaga and Duquesne. FGCU VS. BCS OPPONENTS FGCU is 5-8 all-time against BCS foes after picking up a wins over BIG EAST opponent Seton Hall, ACC foe Virginia Tech and Big Ten opponent Indiana this season. Four of the Eagles’ five wins over BCS opponents have come at Alico Arena.
JANUARY 17, 2011 BALANCED ATTACK With three players averaging double figure points and two more at 7.5 points per game or higher, FGCU leads the A-Sun in scoring at a 72.8 per game clip. The Eagles have scored 73 or more points eight times this season, including five of their last six, and are the only A-Sun team with a positive scoring margin (+17.3). Five different players have led the Blue and Green in scoring this season, led by five from freshman Sarah Hansen, four from junior Kelsey Jacobson and three from senior Shannon Murphy.
AWAY FROM HOME FGCU has a 73-24 (.753) all-time record as the visiting team. Since moving to Division I, the Eagles have compiled a 29-17 (.630) road record.
GET READY, GET SET GO! During its first-ever 6-0 start in A-Sun play, FGCU has gotten out of the gates quick to take control of the game. Over the first 20 minutes in each of their conference games, the Eagles are outscoring their opponents 248-152. Fueling that big differential is the fact that FGCU is shooting 48.1 percent (90-187) from the floor, while limiting their opponents to 32.5 percent (54-166) clip with 71 turnovers. Senior Shannon Murphy and redshirt freshman Sarah Hansen have done the most damage individually in the first half, averaging 10.8 points and 10.0 points, respectively, by the break. Two of FGCU’s six A-Sun opponents haven’t reached 20 points at the half.
Kennedy will be required to sit out a full academic year due to NCAA transfer rules, but will be eligible after the first semester of the 2011-12 campaign. Although the Spokane, Wash. native will not be able to travel with the team or suit up for games in 2010-11, she is permitted to participate in practice with the Eagles.
PROTECTING THE ROCK Already shooting at an A-Sun-best 43.5 percent from the field, FGCU sports the conference’s lowest turnover per game rate at 14.8. The Eagles have had a positive assist/turnover ratio in eight of their last 11 games resulting in a +7.15 turnover margin also best in the A-Sun. Junior Courtney Chihil leads the conference in assist/ turnover ratio at +1.83 thanks to passing out 30 helpers to just 16 giveaways over the last eight games. Senior Shannon Murphy is right behind Chihil in second place with a +1.39 ratio while ranking fifth in the A-Sun at 4.38 assists per game.
EAGLES LAND PAC-10 TRANSFER On Jan. 5, head coach Karl Smesko announced that Brittany Kennedy, formerly of Oregon State University, will join the Florida Gulf Coast women’s basketball program for the 2011-12 season.

Karl smesko | head coach | 9th season Karl Smesko, who enters his ninth year on the bench at FGCU, has enjoyed a tremendous run as the head women’s basketball coach at Florida Gulf Coast University. He was selected as the university’s first women’s basketball coach in 2001. Smesko’s career coaching record, which includes one year at Walsh, two seasons at IPFW and his eight seasons at FGCU, stands at 278-68 and he owns an amazing 11-2 record (.846) in national tournament games. His record at FGCU is an astounding 217-42 and his three-season record in Atlantic Sun Conference matchups is 53-9. Last season, Smesko and the Eagles posted 24 wins, to secure the program’s seventh 21-plus win season in the eight-year program history, along with a second place finish in the Atlantic Sun Conference. FGCU received the program’s first invitation to play in the preseason WNIT, where they advanced to the second round with a win over UTEP before falling to New Mexico and Georgia Tech, and also secured their third consecutive postseason WNIT automatic bid. By participating in the 2010 postseason WNIT, FGCU became the first A-Sun school to make three consecutive WNIT appearances. During the 2009-10 season, the Blue and Green also extended its home winning streak to 24 games, which ranks as the fourth longest home winning streak in Division I women’s basketball heading into the 2010-11 campaign. In 2008-09, Smesko, who was voted A-Sun Coach of the Year, led the Eagles to a Regular Season Atlantic Sun Championship with a 17-3 record. FGCU led the A-Sun in scoring, scoring margin, field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage, assists, assist-to-turnover ratio, and threepoint field goals made during the 2008-09 season. The Eagles also cemented a place in the All-Time A-Sun record books by winning 17 conference games. The Eagles lost to eventual champion USF in the second round of the WNIT and finished the 2008-09 season with an overall record of 26-5. In the Eagles first Division I season, Smesko led the women’s basketball team to a second place finish in the A-Sun with a 13-3 record. They were the fifth best offensive team in the A-Sun as well as the second best defense. They were second in free throw percentage and third in field goal percentage. The Eagles lost to UF in the second round of the WNIT and finished the 2007-08 season with an overall record of 22-8. He guided the Eagles to the Division II NCAA tournament twice. The 2006-07 team finished the regular season undefeated and ranked number one in the nation. The team won the South Region championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championship game. The Eagles were National Runner up and finished with a 34-1 record. Smesko was named South Region Coach of the Year. Coach Smesko is one of an elite group of coaches who has taken a team at two different universities to the national championship game (Smesko guided Walsh University to an NAIA National Championship in 1998). The 2006-07 squad ranked in the top 20 nationally in a remarkable 12 categories: #1 in win-loss percentage, #1 in scoring margin, #2 three-point field goals per game, #2 scoring defense, #3 three-point field goal percentage, #5 scoring offense, #6 assists per game, #8 field-goal percentage, #8 field-goal percentage defense, #11 steals per game, #18 turnovers per game, and #20 in rebound margin. In his first season at FGCU, Smesko guided the 2002-03 Eagles squad to a 30-1 record. The Eagles followed with an 18-8 mark in 2003-04 and a 21-9 mark in 2004-05. Smesko led the Eagles to the NCAA tournament and a 29-2 record in 2005-06. FGCU advanced to the regional semifinals with a win against Rollins. Prior to taking the helm at FGCU, Smesko spent two seasons turning around the program at Indiana-Purdue/Fort Wayne from 1999 to 2001. Inheriting a team that had posted a 2-24 the previous season and an 8-44 record the previous two seasons prior to his arrival, Smesko sparked an 11-win improvement and a 13-14 record in 1999-2000. In his second season Smesko’s team posted the third-most wins in school history with a 19-8 mark. Smesko started his college coaching career at Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio in 1997-98. He led the Cavaliers to the 1998 NAIA Division II National Championship with a 29-5 mark, a 12-win improvement over the previous year. Smesko, whose team had been predicted to finish sixth in the nine-team Mid-Ohio Conference, was named the Mid-Ohio Conference and NAIA National Coach of the Year. It was the first national championship in school history. He spent the 1998-99 season as an assistant coach for the University of Maryland in the prestigious Atlantic Coast Conference. Smesko, a native of Bath, Ohio who now resides in Fort Myers, was a 1993 Summa Cum Laude graduate of Kent State and earned his master’s degree from Walsh University in 1998.
