A Hollywood box office sensation, despite their strange, eclectic and often outright weird offerings – Barton Fink,

Raising Arizona, Fargo. Although they started out as independent fare, the brothers have become Hollywood elite with such movies as – No Country For Old Men, Millers

Crossing. Their humor is witty, anecdotal, farcical and silly.

It’ s also dark and morbid - Burn After Reading – and uses gallows humor and black comedy – Blood Simple, Fargo.

Camera in Comedy Films $25 / $30 March 17 at 1 – 2:30pm, Thursday

CO4325 – The Collaboratory (Downtown Fort Myers)

Speaker: Dr. Arthur Wenk How do movie directors tell stories cinematically? If we have read the screenplay, why bother seeing the movie? What choices does a director make in terms of mise-en-scène (literally, the action taking place on the stage), cinematography (lighting, camera angle, composition), editing, and sound? We shall explore these questions in the comedy film category. We associate comedies with memorable screenplays and memorable acting: so what

part does the director play in telling the story? We shall study Howard Hawks ’ s His Girl Friday (1940), a screwball comedy that satirized the traditional love story; Frank Capra ’ s It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), whose story originated in a Christmas card; Mike Nichols’ s The Graduate (1967), which earned the director an Academy Award; and Woody Allen’ s Annie Hall (1977), which won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay. Hollywood and the Importance of Musicals $25 / $30 May 17 at 1:30 – 3pm, Tuesday

BR4326 – Brooks Commons Club (Bonita Springs)

Speaker: Shelly Kaufman As America struggled with ways to cope with the Depression, Hollywood’ s answer was lively, vibrant musicals which distracted from the dark times as they emerged as an enduring art form. Movies starring Astaire and Rogers - Top Hat as well as Disney productions - Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and the first “talkie” The Jazz Singer kept moviegoers entertained. Later, more sophisticated musicals such as Singin’ in the Rain, West Side Story, Gigi and An American in Paris were Oscar winners.

BR4327 – Brooks Commons Club (Bonita Springs)

Speaker: Shelly Kaufman From the early 30’ s through the 50’ s, Hollywood bypassed the Hays Code in very sneaky ways, avoiding censorship with such comedies as Some Like It Hot and The Seven Year Itch. The comedy genre humorously exaggerates the situation, the language, action and characters. Comedies observe the deficiencies, foibles and frustrations of life, providing merriment and a momentary escape from day-to-day life. They usually have happy endings, although the humor may have a serious or pessimistic side. Some of the stars often present in screwball comedies include Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, Irene Dunne and the Marx Brothers.

Did you know that more than 60% of people eligible for Social Security decide to begin receiving their benefit before they reach full retirement age? This permanently reduces your most important retirement asset for the remainder of your life. This class is for nearly everyone who’s ever earned a paycheck and wants every Social Security benefit dollar in which you are entitled because you paid for it so you’ve earned it. This session reviews how to evaluate the advantages, disadvantages, income tax consequences and strategies of the many different Social Security options available. Understanding the scenarios for single, married, divorced and domestic partners can have a significant impact on a source of income that can represent about 40% of your retirement income but can be even more important for a surviving spouse as increased longevity creates a greater need for guaranteed income that will last as long as you live.

Speaker: Steve Stolz Choose one of the course options above. Same-household spouses or partners and children (one only) may attend for free. Statistics show that 70% of us will have a long-term care need in our lifetime. As a result of advances in medical science and pharmaceuticals, we are living longer so the probability of needing care has greatly increased. Medicare does not cover the cost of extended care after 100 days. Most want to be independent and don’t want to burden their children with their care. Sadly, even the nicest “Continuous Care Communities” don’t have the staff to provide the care you might expect. This presentation will cover in detail the importance, costs, benefits and features of traditional and “hybrid” Long Term Care products. It will be taught with a real-world perspective by an instructor that has been the caregiver for his parents for the last three years.
