One of the great fascinating areas of archaeological research is piecing together parts of the historical record that reveal major transitions of the human experience. One of the more major “leaps” is the move by early people from hunters and gathers to herders or farmers. It also marks the first use of metals for “industrialization”. In this new effort, human activities start approximately 9000 years ago. In archaeological terms it’s referred to as the Neolithic (New Stone Age) that transitions into the Chalcolithic (Copper Stone Age). A catered lunch is included. Call 941505-0130 for lunch options prior to class. Instructor: Dr. Steven Derfler

The Art of Jane Austen in “Pride and Prejudice” HC 1233
$18
Monday, November 7 at 1:00pm to 3:00pm (2 hours)
There is a mystery about Jane Austen: why is she still so popular after 200 years? One of the reasons is the compelling dynamic between the hero and the heroine in each of her six novels. This dynamic is entirely different in each novel. All her books are about courtship, but within this context she never repeats herself. She creates great characters, not only in her heroes and heroines, but in her subordinate characters as well. Her characters reveal themselves through dialogue, which makes the novels eminently adaptable to stage and screen. She is famous for her style and the architecture of her plots. She creates great scenes. We will explore these aspects of her art in her most famous novel Pride and Prejudice and see some of the most famous scenes from the 1995 BBC adaptation of that novel. Instructor: Ms. Mary Lou Williams
Music The History of Jazz: The Bebop Era
$18
HC1219 Monday, November 14 at 1:30pm to 3:00pm (1.5 hours) Bebop is a style of jazz developed in the early to mid-1940 in the United States and became popular through the 1950’s and 1960’s. It developed the younger generation of jazz musicians aimed to counter the popular, dance–oriented swing style with a new, non-danceable music that was more of a “musician’s music” that demanded close listening. As bebop was no longer dance music, it enabled the musicians to play at faster tempos. Bebop musicians typically played the melody of the song with the accompaniment of the rhythm section, then had a section in which all of the performers improvised solos, then returned to the melody at the end of the song. Featured artists’ performances will include Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Thelonius Monk, and the Modern Jazz Quartet.
