With the restoration of diplomatic relations with the United States, Cuba is beginning to emerge from 55 years of isolation. There have been significant changes in Cuba over the last ten years: Fidel is no longer President, stepping down after ruling for 49 years, but has been replaced by his 84 year old brother, Raul Castro. Though considered the “architect” of the Cuban revolution, Raul has now embarked on a series of changes that challenge the nature of that model and which will have an important impact on how Cuba evolves, both politically and economically. Will it emerge from its status as the “least free” country in the Western hemisphere? Can it change from an economy where 80% of the labor force is employed by the state, to one which will be more productive and globally engaged? These and other issues will be examined. Instructor: Dr. Benjamin Crosby

Friday, November 13 at 10:00am - 3:30pm (5.5 hours)
$42 Includes Catered Lunch
Call (941) 505-0130 for lunch options One of the greatest archeological discoveries, and subsequent mysteries, emerged on November 22, 1922, when archaeologist Howard Carter identified the sealed tomb of the New Kingdom Pharaoh, Tutankhamun. Over the next few years, 3,500 objects hastily buried with the boy-king were excavated, along with his intact sarcophagus and mummy. Of 62 tombs discovered in “The Canyon”, as Carter called the King’s Valley, this was the only royal tomb discovered fully intact, with all of its funerary good still serving their pharaoh. These artifacts alone would have made this finding by the Egyptologist unique and careermaking for Carter. However, further analysis seemed to reveal a dark side, a mysterious glimpse into ancient palace intrigue and possible assassination for possession of power and a throne. Today we know better, and forensic evidence offers new clues. Join us to find out. Instructor: Dr. Steven Derfler
