Patterns of Living: Ancient & Modern Middle East_____________________________________$30 HC0526
Tuesday & Thursday, June 4, 6 at 1:30pm – 3:30pm (4 hours)
Long-heralded as the birthplace of civilization, the rich historical and archaeological heritage of the Middle East gives us the template for the development of civilization and society that carries us into the 21st century. We will explore the development of humankind via the evolution of its patterns of living. Called "the most noble of societies," the semi-nomadic lifestyle of the Bedouin is centuries-old, yet faces the challenge of modernity. Low overhead, lots of fresh air, freedom of movement....sound appealing? In contrast, the notion of city and urban society is entirely different in the West than in the Mid-East. The Arab city had a mystique all of its own and for good reason. This changed with the colonialism of European society in the early 19th Century. Instructor: Dr. Steven Derfler

A Perspective on Aging and Afterwards_______________________________________________$30 HC0538
Tuesdays, July 2, 9, 16 at 10:00am – 12:00pm (6 hours)
Join us in the first trilogy in the Perspective Series. Explore a fresh approach to this idea of “aging.” Discussion will move from where most of us are now (young old age??), to what we can do to make our current lives richer and more meaningful, to a consideration of whether or not we’d really want to live forever. Listed below are the discussion topics in this series. Instructor: Dr. Sharon Whitehill HC0538-001 Looking Forward to Everything: “We look before and after, and pine for what is not,” wrote the poet Shelley. Sad, but too often true. We know that we can't change the past, but isn't it wasteful to stress about how life will end, which only drains joy from the life we live now? Instead, let’s assess what we have, work to change what we’re able to change, and then look ahead with humor, good will, and even anticipation.

HC0538-002 Mark My Words About Making Your Mark: What do painting, getting published, making movies, and indulging in graffiti have in common? My answer is this: because we know life is short and that we have only a limited time here on earth, leaving some visual mark behind is emotionally imperative to all human beings. If I offered you an immortality pill right now, today, would you take it? Before you say yes, let me try to persuade you that living forever might be more of a curse than a blessing.
