NEW
Wednesday, July 13 at 10:00am to 3:30pm (5.5 Hours)

The State of Israel became a reality in 1948. Finally, after 2500 years of spiritual Zionism and about 55 years after the advent of political Zionism, a state was re-born in the ancient homeland of the Jewish people. Yet this homeland was to be re-established on “Twice-Promised Land”. Palestinian and Arab nationalisms were also promised selfdetermination by the British during World War I. We trace the roots of this age-old conflict, explore nationalist movements in the region, and analyze Israel’s struggle to survive amidst seemingly overwhelming odds. With the bold and daring steps taken by Sadat and Begin, the road to peace would begin, culminating in the Oslo Accords and Peace with Jordan in the mid 1990’s. With a new millennium what options face Israel and her Arab neighbors today? The winds of change would blow across North Africa and the Mid-East in the winter of 2010-2011. Brutal regimes would fall during the Arab Spring and monarchies would radically rethink themselves, as the Arab world would undergo a dramatic series of events that hopefully will lead to a more equitable lifestyle for all. Catered lunch is included. Call 941-505-0130 for lunch options. Instructor: Dr. Steven Derfler

archaeological research of the past 150 years puts “flesh onto the bones” of the biblical narrative- giving us a better glimpse of the past. Armchair Adventures Journeys to Latin America – Ecuador HC1171
NEW
$18
Tuesday, July 12 at 10:00am to 11:30am (1.5 hours)
Increasingly sought out as a retirement destination, Ecuador sits up on the equator for which it is named. Discovered in 1534, it had neither the civilization of the Inca nor much in the way of mineral resources, and thus received little attention from its Spanish conquerors who finally established administrative control in 1540 with the appointment of a Captain-General. Since then, most of the Ecuador development has occurred in three distinct regions – present day Guayaquil on the coast, Quito in the highlands and Cuenca to the south. Politically, Educator has been one of the most turbulent countries in Latin America but remarkably, that turbulence has been largely non-violent. Physically Ecuador has some of the most varied geography in the word – from a chain of majestic snow-capped volcanoes sitting atop the equator, to the jungles of the Amazon, to the barren highlands of the central plateau, and to the exotic islands of the Galapagos, birthplace of Darwin’s theory of evolution. On our journey we will explore Ecuador’s varied cultures, its history, its politics, its economics, the influence of its different regions, the natural beauty of this small but quite amazing country, and the attraction it holds for retirees. Please join us. Instructor: Dr. Benjamin Crosby
Journeys to Latin American – Peru HC1170
NEW

Tuesday, June 4 at 10:00am to 11:30am (1.5 hours)
Peru, home to ancient cultures and the greatest pre-Columbian empire – the Incas. Conquered by the Spaniards in 1532, Peru flourished and supplied a large portion of the resources that helped create a massive Spanish empire. Peru’s capital, Lima, became the site of the Spanish Vice-Royalty in 1535, and the oldest University in the America founded in May, 1551. After indolence in 1821, Peru’s fortunes declined and it became better known for political instability and a struggling economy. On our journey to Peru we will look at its history, cultural and social elements as well as the influential political and economic dynamics driving its present and future. We will also check out some of the many wonderful things to explore and experience in Peru – the Incan culture of Cusco and the nearby Sacred Valley, the majestic ruins of Machu Picchu, the ancient cultural mystery of the Nazca Lines, the dynamism and revitalization of Lima’s colonial heritage, and its growing importance as a “foodie” destination. Please join us for this armchair journey. Instructor: Dr. Benjamin Crosby

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton look to be the Republican and Democratic Party nominees for President. As President of the United States, what might their respective foreign policy agendas look like? Would Hillary be an extension of the policies of Barack Obama (many of which she helped develop as Secretary of State), or would she re-jigger priorities…particularly in matters of trade such as the TPA? What about Trump? Would he really build that “Wall”, thus alienating our closest neighbor to the south; would he try to make amends with Putin thereby angering many of our European allies; and how does he propose to “stamp” out ISIS? It won’t be an easy task to figure out possible agendas but we’ll certainly give it a whirl. Instructor: Dr. Benjamin Crosby

Lightroom takes the best parts of Photoshop that photographers used the most and they bundled them into this program. Also, Lightroom's biggest strength is its organization. This is where the pitfall is for many folks as they may not have a system to organize their photos. Lightroom works with "collections" to keep common photos together and so you can retrieve them later. If one has used a program like the Elements' Organizer, this will look familiar. Lightroom also comes with other "modules" like Develop, Book, Slideshow, Print and more. Adobe has tried to make the workflow linear so the photographer starts from the left and finishes on the right. In this class we will see how this software can help your photography. Students entering this class should have a working knowledge of a computer. This includes how to use a mouse, keyboard and the Windows operating or Mac operating system. The student should know how to navigate their computer and access different drives. You may bring your own laptop with Lightroom installed before class. Be sure the serial number has been entered and the program runs. If you are using Lightroom CC it should run without "calling home" for the one class. Lightroom works on both Windows and Mac. This kind of goes without saying, but you must know how to use the computer, such as opening and saving files. There will be a limited number of laptops available if you don't have Lightroom installed on your laptop. When you register, please let us know if you are using your own laptop with Lightroom installed or if you need to use an FGCU laptop. An optional workbook is available for $20, payable to the instructor. Instructor: Mr. Spencer Pullen

Photography: Lighting HC1163
$60
Thursdays, May 12, 19, 26, June 2 at 12:00pm to 2:00pm (8 hours)
In this day and age digital cameras are everywhere. The days of shooting film are just about gone. The prices are falling and the technology is getting better by the day. There is so much buzz about the actual cameras that most people have forgotten about what photography is actually about...light. We will first explore how just a cheap piece of foam core will enhance your photos. Foam core and reflectors are great accessories that will help with filling in the light. As the class progresses, we will move into using the external flash. These are light weight and don’t require running extensions cords for power. There are ways to turn your external flash into the "strobes" that the pro's use in the studio. What will you learn from this class? Have you ever wanted to take a "professional" portrait of your family? Have you ever wanted to dive into beach photography, stock photography, sports photography? We will cover all of this. You will get a notebook that has all of the information and lighting diagrams so you can recreate the results at home. Class Requirements: The student must have a DSLR camera. If you are not familiar with basic camera setting such as ISO, shutter speed and aperture, you may find this class a little overwhelming. I would suggest taking my "Digital Photography Exposed" class first as this class covers all the basics. Optional workbook is available for $10, payable to the instructor. Instructor: Mr. Spencer Pullen
