The “Davids” of Florence

$20 / $25

BV9203 – Bentley Village (North Naples) – June 22 at 10am – 11:30am, Thursday Renaissance Florence enshrined the Biblical hero David as the symbol of their city. Images of David abound in Florentine art. His youthful strength, courage and confidence in conquering the fearsome giant Goliath became a metaphor for Florence itself. Instructor: Carol Jonson

Ravishing Ravenna

MP9204 – Moorings Park (South Naples) – September 11 at 10am – 11:30am, Monday Often unexplored on a grand tour of Italy, Ravenna is a jewel tucked into the country’s Adriatic coastline just a few hours’ drive south of Venice. Dead at 57, his legend lives on in Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, Key Largo, and dozens of other classics.

His westerns are the gold standard for the genre: tales of rugged, hard-living, romantic drifters, and the magnificent landscapes they roamed. His non-western, How Green Was My Valley, won Best Picture. One wife, lots of booze and girlfriends, and four Oscars for directing, helped define his life. His “stock company” claimed representation of many Hollywood legends.

Even her birth presents a mystery; her father unknown, she was abandoned to a life of abuse and foster homes. Hollywood stardom would be closely tied to the Rat Pack, Kennedys, and sadly, drugs. How did she like playing the ditzy blond? We’ll unwrap some of the mysteries but not all. Legends, too, need to keep some secrets. Instructor: Steven Mutart

His left arm, the envy of every schoolboy and the bane of every major-league hitter, was shot and a career that many considered the greatest ever by a left-handed pitcher was over. We will cover the highlights and the quiet, private moments of this humble man.

Ted Williams is still revered today, more than 55 years after his retirement in 1960.

American Crossroads: Rural Life Meets Modern Art

$40 / $47

NC9186 – Naples Center (South Naples) – February 16 at 11am – 12:30pm, Friday The full scope of American modernism reflects the undeniable impact that rural America had on the expansion and embrace of modernism in this country. Treatments of Coastal New England, small-town Pennsylvania, Midwestern Farms and other regions of the country illustrate the translation, spread and growth of the American version of Modernism. Givens: Robert Gover, Jeff Wall, Hannah Wilke and the Regenerative Legacy of Marcel Duchamp’s Etant donnés

$40 / $47

NC9187– Naples Center (South Naples) – March 16 at 11am – 12:30pm, Friday This lecture will address the critical and artistic reception of Marcel Duchamp’s enigmatic final masterpiece, Etant donnés: 1. La chute d’eau, 2. Le gaz d’élairage…, of 1946-66. This environmental assemblage, which has been on display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art since 1969, has been described by Jasper Johns as “the strangest work of art in any museum.” We will challenge the current notion of presentism as inherently flawed. Seen through the eyes of later artists, the work both captures and regenerates the dynamic forces of Duchamp’s subversive assemblage. Instructor: Michael Taylor, Chief Curator and Deputy Director for Art and Education, VA Museum of Fine Art

While the visuals of Banejeree’s childhood in India greatly influence her aesthetic, her immigration to the U. S. as a young child and her love of her current home, New York City, form the core of her practice. We will focus on the way her work reflects the splintered experience of identity, tradition and culture. Instructor: Jodi Throckmorton, Curator of contemporary Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts

As Paramount, MGM, and Warner Bros. competed for talent and content, creating the “star system” in the magical “Golden Age” of movie making. They made Greta Garbo, James Stewart, Clark Gable and other icons rich, and for the most part happy, indentured servants. They changed the world. While serving 24 years in prison, he recruited his son to resume his spying. This is a fascinating story of double betrayal. We will also compare it to another father and son spy duo – John and Michael Walker convicted in 1985. Instructor: Thomas Eastwood

Saudi Arabia: Friend, Foe, or Both?

$20 / $25

Option #1 – NC9362– Naples Center (South Naples) – June 30 at 10am – 11:30am, Friday Option #2 – AR9363 – The Arlington (Southeast Naples) – September 15 at 10am – 11:30am, Friday Choose one of the course options above. Even though 15 of the 19 hijackers on 9/11 were Saudis (as was their mastermind, Osama bin Laden), that the goal of millions of Wahhabi Saudis is the destruction of the West (including the U.S.), and the practice of outrageous human rights violations (over a year in prison and 300 lashes for possessing homemade wine), the U.S. and the Saudis have maintained relatively good relations. A mutual distrust of Iran and lots of oil still buried in the desert sands of the Arabian Peninsula play a significant role. How fragile is the relationship? What is the future of the House of Saud? What and who is next? Let’s get up to speed on these critical issues and see if there are any clear answers. Instructor: Steven Mutart

Jonathan Pollard: Avarice or Ideology?

$20 / $25

BR9364 – Brooks Commons Club (Bonita Springs) – July 6 at 10am – 11:30am, Thursday Pollard, a U.S. intelligence analyst, was arrested while spying for Israel. Israel refused him asylum and then denied knowledge of his spying. For years, they have sought his release. Despite a life sentence, he was eligible for parole in November 2015 and was ultimately released. We will address the facts behind this highly debated and political case. Was he motivated by love for Israel and its security, or was his aim more sinister – greed? Also, did he spy only for Israel? Additionally, we will discuss other Mossad operations (Eichmann, the Hangman of Riga, other assassinations) and Israeli intelligence organizations. Instructor: Thomas Eastwood

American Presidents in Hard Economic Times: Lessons for Today?

Option #1 – BR9365 – Brooks Commons Club (Bonita Springs) – July 10, 13 at 10am – 11:30am, Monday/Thursday Option #2 – NC9366 – Naples Center (South Naples) – August 23, 25 at 10am – 11:30am, Wednesday/Friday Choose one of the course options above. From Revolutionary War days, when Washington was struggling to pay his troops, to Obama’s inherited wars and massive deficits, booms and busts have been part of the American economic fabric. Many 19th century presidents confronted depressions, but believed the business cycle of boom or bust was strictly a business affair. Causes of the depressions and how each affected the sitting president and his people will be explored. What do these economic disruptions have in common with the situation today? American Presidents in Hard Times: 1776 – 1929

$20 / $25

Option #1 – BR9367 – Brooks Commons Club (Bonita Springs) – July 10 at 10am – 11:30am, Monday Option #2 – NC9368 – Naples Center (South Naples) – August 23 at 10am – 11:30am, Wednesday Choose one of the course options above. Congress had no power to tax as the Revolutionary War wore on. So desperate was the situation that George Washington went out of pocket to pay his troops. One hundred and fifty years later, after a half dozen or so significant economic booms and busts, Herbert Hoover was faced with a financial collapse of almost Biblical proportions. Some said this was proof of the failure of capitalism and, by extension, the American way of life. We will explore the surprisingly similar causes of the panics of the 19th century and how they affected the sitting president and the country; and what, if any, effort was made to prevent them in the future, and if the root causes still exist today.

American Presidents in Hard Times: 1930 – Today

$20 / $25

Option #1 – BR9369 – Brooks Commons Club (Bonita Springs) – July 13 at 10am – 11:30am, Thursday Option #2 – NC9370 – Naples Center – (South Naples) – August 25 at 10am – 11:30am, Friday Choose one of the course options above. Despite President Hoover’s best efforts, in 1933 President Roosevelt inherited an economic collapse that only got worse as continuing bank failures and mounting unemployment sank the nation to new depths. Unprecedented governmental action, WWII, and a revival of the natural business cycle saw prosperity return. The rest of the century saw its share of boom and bust, but nothing close to the depressed times of the 1930’s, that is until the so-called Great Recession of 2008. What comparisons can be made between these economic events and the reactions of the various presidents in office at the time?

$45 / $55

AT9376 – Atrium Executive Center (South Ft. Myers) – July 13 at 9:30am – 12pm and 12:30pm – 3pm, Thursday Lunch is included with this full day seminar. The State of Israel became a reality in 1948. Finally, after 2500 years of spiritual Zionism and about 55 years after the advent of political Zionism, a state was re-born in the ancient homeland of the Jewish people. Yet this homeland was to be re-established on "Twice-Promised Land." Palestinian and Arab nationalisms were also promised self-determination by the British during World War I. We trace the roots of this age-old conflict, explore nationalist movements in the region, and analyze Israel's struggle to survive amidst seemingly overwhelming odds. With the bold and daring steps taken by Sadat and Begin, the road to peace would begin, culminating in the Oslo Accords and Peace with Jordan in the mid 1990's. With a new millennium what options face Israel and her Arab neighbors today? The winds of change would blow across North Africa and the Mid-East in the winter of 20102011. Brutal regimes would fall during the Arab Spring and monarchies would radically rethink themselves, as the Arab world would undergo a dramatic series of events that hopefully will lead to a more equitable lifestyle for all. Five Best and Worst U.S. Presidents

$20 / $25

NC9380 – Naples Center (South Naples) – August 15 at 10am – 11:30am, Tuesday Like naming the greatest baseball player or actor, selecting the best or worst President is a very subjective business, but over many decades and dozens of surveys, a consensus of the top and bottom five can reasonably be made. Selecting the criteria to make the choice is almost as subjective as the final selections themselves. We won’t let the cat out of the bag, so come to our meeting and talk to learn and weigh in on this fun session. Instructor: Steven Mutart
