he Institute for Art and Restoration was founded on 23 March 1978 and operates as a centre for specialisation and professional training in the field of conservation and restoration of cultural heritage worldwide. It is also a consultancy and restoration centre for public authorities and private companies.
message from the president
Since 1978, students from all over the world have been trained in the Institute’s laboratories, contributing to consolidating Florence’s image as a “world capital of art and restoration”. Our objective has always been to contribute to the protection of world cultural heritage through the development and management of study programmes, conservation and restoration projects and heritage site redevelopment projects with public and private organisations, the European Commission, UNESCO and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs through a framework of agreements undersigned with more than 60 governments worldwide. In line with the Europe2020 strategy, the Institute is aiming for intelligent growth through targeted investment in teaching, research and innovation; sustainable growth thanks to careful choices made to protect the environment; and united growth, aimed at creating jobs and reducing poverty. With these aims in mind, Palazzo Spinelli is facing the challenges of the future with the awareness that teaching means boosting the human, civil and cultural consciousness of students – and therefore transferring extensive fundamental skills and comprehensive professional knowledge – and providing the tools to be able to address and interpret the changes that are occurring in society and the world of work.
40 years of restoration

Thanks to the experience Palazzo Spinelli has accumulated over the years, many national and international companies have also involved the school in cross-sector conservation and restoration projects.

I
taly has an artistic and historical heritage of exceptional importance that includes a network of five thousand museums and archaeological sites and forty-nine sites declared by UNESCO to be of “Outstanding Universal Value”. These monuments, churches and museums attract tourists and create an economy worth about 10 billion euro a year. In other words, our heritage is a pinnacle of western culture and an extraordinary resource for the economy of our country. Promoting and making these assets accessible involves considerable investment for maintenance and restoration projects, with the consequent need for professionals who can boast specialist knowledge of art history (and more generally humanities studies), perfect technical and scientific skills and, of course, excellent operational and management skills.
