COMMUNITY GRADUATIONS Rinconada del Sol, Peru and San Roque, Philippines graduated as self-sustaining communities! In Rinconada del Sol, 60% of secondary school graduates have gone on to technical school or university and every home now has electricity. The community started as a squatter settlement, but now they all own their land and have the property title! This has major implications for their legal rights. In San Roque, early intervention for malnourishment is now part of maternal care and the school dropout rate has virtually disappeared. Several emergency preparedness plans are in place with a network of trained community members and provision sites to mitigate the staggering number of natural disasters that rock the islands each year.
