Apple, the technology leading company, is well known for its refined design, precision and simplicity. Their Stores, therefore, must reflect this principles and are understood as an extension of their own products. Beyond the mere selling of their products, each Store goes one step further and is conceived as an extension of the public space and a placewhere to meet and gather people. Diverse activities take place in it, from the reparation of any device to different kind of workshops and lectures. The seating, the big forgotten in the retail spaces, becomes an important subject, and besides the stools in front of the screen, additional seats has been incorporated in the form of planters, also reinforcing with the trees the quality of the space and its comfort. The materials have been carefully selected in order to highlight the main protagonists of it: the display tables. But what is even more important are the details. Every single one of them has been thoroughly studied and developed, having as a result a full space where all of its different elements are perfectly aligned and related between them. The material palette, caracterised for the cold stainless steel of the initial stores, is also evolving to the warmer tones of the limestone, timber and bronze.

author: Foster + Partners Ltd. location: Cotais Strip, Macao. 1890 sqm.

Apple Cotai Central offers a calm complement to the buzz and excitement of Macau, responding to the desire for an inviting, contemplative space, where technology, entertainment and arts come together to make a positive contribution to the city. Its timeless design reinvigorates a corner of Cotai with a distinctive addition – a luminescent cube, whose pure geometry and warm ‘beacon-like’ glow draws passers-by closer, set within a quiet bamboo grove and an external plaza. The design is the result of a close collaboration between the design team at Apple led by chief design officer, Sir Jonathan Ive and Angela Ahrendts, senior vice president of Retail and Online Stores and Foster + Partners. Apple Cotai Central seeks to create more meaningful spaces for the community and providing an alternative urban model for Cotai. Strategically located at the heart of this gaming and entertainment capital, the design makes a humble civic gesture with a large new event plaza in the foreground of the cube. Carved out of a densely planted bamboo forest, the plaza forms an oasis of tranquility, an urban room that draws people into the site, creating pedestrian connections between the surrounding buildings for the first time.

Apple Cotai Central is conceptualized as a ‘paper lantern’ that glows mysteriously. Visitors entering the store are treated to a magical experience, surrounded by glowing stone panels that shimmer throughout the day as the sun brings them to life, while at night the cube radiates a warm glow, contrasting against the bright lights of Macau.

The first-of-its-kind glass-stone composite façade comprises five layers of glass integrated with incredibly thin layers of stone, which gives the building its distinctive materiality – appearing as translucent stone walls, akin to stained-glass. The structural frame is supported by just three corner columns wrapped in mirrored stainless-steel that reflect the patterns and colors of the façade, dematerializing the structure and blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment

PERSPECTIVE PLAN OVERVIEW - LEVEL 01

PERSPECTIVE OV LEVEL 01

The mechanical system strategiescomprises of systems based on mechanical ventilation and air-conditioning. As the combined effect of high year-round internal heat gains during store opening hours and high moisture content in the ambient air, it would be impractical to consider natural ventilation as part of any strategy for maintaining thermal comfort. In recognition of this, the design utilizes a modest degree of positive pressurisation within the retail sales area. AHUs are mounted on the LG Level, having the ductwork close to the technical risers and provide direct air distribution to the sales area. Both AHUs will be located in one plantroom and within Apple demise.

FACADE The facade is designed as a ground bearing system supported on the Level 01 slab. The glass facade panels span between the store floors for about 7.6 meters and are supported continuously against lateral out-of-plane loads at the base and at the top via structural silicone. Panes are stack on two levels, transferring the vertical load to the concrete substructure through setting blocks. Vertical building structure movements at Level 02 and Level 03 are not transferred to the facade system due to vertical released connections. In-plane loads are transferred at the base and at the top of the panels to the building structure via structural silicone. STRUCTURAL STRATEGY

The floor structure in the MIRROR Front of House area at level 2 spans POLISHED STAINLESS STEEL CLADDING TO COLUMNS 21.4m and cantilevers inwards 7.5m, in such a way to have an MP-2 opening in the middle of about 10m width. To respect the design limits given from the code and to keep in the same time a very light structure a space truss was proposed. The overall depth of the deck is equal to 1.0m: 0.85m ( truss depth) + 0.15m ( RC slab). The Lateral-Resisting system consists of braced frames which transfers lateral forces due to earthquake and wind load down IN-SITU COMPOSITE RESIN TERRAZZO SURFACE FINISH to the shear walls in the basement, which allows the structure TZ-1 7800 to respect the lateral deflection FFL LEVEL 1 due to wind load (very high in Macau Area) and in the same time to allow simple connections at the bottom of the columns. The self weight of the level 2 FoH has been estimated to be around 100 tonnes. Roof structure - FACADE SECTION - SIDE FACADE framing was designed similar 2but STOREFRONT with a lower tonnage a lower 1 : 25 due to less stringent design criteria, lower live load and greater structural depth.

STORE SKYLIGHT - ISOMETRIC OVERVIEW

D:\Revit\2396-apSCC-arch-XX_malonsorodriguez.rvt

Optimized Energy Conservation Glazing Design: The proposed glazing system incorporates laminated stone, creating a semi-translucent and low-g value facade. The stone layer significantly reduces solar radiation gains and hence the store cooling loads. Lighting: The FOH maximum power density has been defined in accordance to the Technical Manual of Procedures for Energy Conservation in Macao Buildings published by the GDSE. BOH will implement single-point LEDS within the ceiling and automated lighting controls responding to daylight levels for further energy consumption reduction. Daylight and Views:Daylight has been maximized through a semi-translucent facade and zenital skylight which has been engineered to control direct solar radiation and glare. The bamboo landscape proposal provides quality views for customers and the general community Lighting Mercury Content:Lighting design for the FOH uses superlampdina while the BOH areas are being design with LEDs not introducing any mercury content to the store. Fundamental and Enhanced Systems Commissioning The project will implement a commissioning programme to ensure that all MEP systems are calibrated and performing as designed. In doing so energy consumming systems can be optimized for an enhanced performance. Indoor Water Use Reduction: Within the store high efficient flow and flush fixtures will reduce the potable water used for sanitary facilities by at least 20% against the baseline outlined in the Sands Sustainability Guidelines.

• With the building depressed half a level into the ground and the garden raised half a level to reduce the building’s apparent height and maximising landscape area.

Your sketch, outline design options

The challenge was to accommodate the area of the brief on a relatively small green site, without overwhelming it or its surroundings. Building substantially below ground is not really an option because of the greater site disruption, risk of flooding and possibility of encountering archaeological material. The brief itself is dominated by storage of the archive itself. If the intention was simply to have this better organised in a dark, secure, uninhabited space then such a building may not need to be on this site and in this setting. However, some rooms in the Palace provide a reminder of how rich a backdrop books and shelving can create and the possibility of combining some of the other spaces in the brief with the archive itself raises more interesting possibilities. For example, the reading room is defined as a separate area in the brief but it could easily be a space created by the archive, with the garden in the foreground and book-stacks in the background. Refurbishment of Unione Militare Via del Corso, Rome, Italy

ARCHITECTS:Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas

A contemporary interpretation of the historic centre has led to a minor intervention on the outside of the building, whose original construction dates back to the end of the XIX century, focusing on the renovation of the interiors and roofing. The restoration of the outside has focused on the recovering and valorization of the original architectural features of the building. The architecture of the facades has been highlighted through a minimal light design intervention, which gives a touch of contemporary to the building whilst putting it in connection to the city.

Office space | 300m2 location: ChamartĂn, Madrid

The law firm VCGH sought to expand its offices to accompany the growth of the company, giving a new image in the face of its global growth. the future of the legal profession comprises a series of new practices and business models that take shape through all kinds of activities and conversations. I believe architecture plays a fundamental role in this sense, and therefore the new HQ had to represent these ideas, allowing maximum flexibility and multiplying the possibilities of use. In the aim to reach these objectives we propose a completely open and transparent concept where workers can share their experiences and skills, maintaining their privacy when necessary.

The project is divided into two floors, where the work functions are separated according to their private/ublic character. The technical character governs the organization of spaces, making the whole an integrated design where form and function are one. Materials such as oak, or passive and light systems of privatization, seek to recreate domestic spaces to make the professional experience closer to the individual.

Final Thesis Project, Barrio del Pilar rehabilitation The Barrio del Pilar quarter was built in the 60s, in a time o economical expansion followed by a constrution boom in Spain. The aim of this new quarter, located on the north of Madrid, was to host a working inmigran class who came to the city. The houses of limited means and minimal surfaces, are today totally obsolete. On the other hand, this superblock offers to the habitants multiples squares and parks poorly connected with unaccesible ramps and stairs. In all, the Barrio del Pilar needs, besides a rege neration of housing, a urban and public activity revitalization , as well as a new image.

Life (unexpected)

Works developedat the School of the Art Institute of Chicago

Suddenly I become conscious; I am able to accurately perceive the emptiness that surrounds me. All of a sudden, I can feel the silent pressure of the vacuum that embraces me and it becomes unbearable. I sense each profile and each corner of every volume around me. I occupy. Ever since I came into this world I occupy. I stole a part of the emptiness and I appropriated it. The air weighs on me and leaves me immobile. I can perceive the most intimate relationships that occur in me; between my body and the nothingness around myself. That nothing that now hurts. But suddenly, as quickly as it came, it dispels. I recover the weight of my body, and, little by little, the air becomes bearable again. And I come back. I come back and I try to forget. To forget that, for an instant, it hurt you to live.

paint because painting is time (contained time). But time does not belong to us either, and neither does space. However, we try to make them ours. We build fictions where we believe we control them: we add limits to time and create edges to space (to bring them closer to our dimension.) It was with this desperate ambition of dominating them that I became an architect. But Architecture is limiting. Architecture has the quality of transforming a space endowing it with new attributes. And so does a person: a given space is involuntarily transformed by a person´s conscious action. A very physical process that can only be experienced through time. How much of me is within a space? How much of a space am I?

Often, memories lie purposely to memory. Regularly, they wear grey sheets and merge in the shade. Sometimes we walk through other people’s mists assimilating them as our own, and in others, on the other hand, we feel ourselves visitors of our own. We are the times we have been, and yet, we are too the times of others we made our own. We appropriate. Time, space, objects, faces or bodies... nothing is ours yet we claim them of our own. How much of me is within me? How much of you am I? Enough. Words are not enough. Not at least in between my hands. This is why I rip them apart into traces and they bleed paint: I draw. I read, I write, I draw. What is the difference? I draw and I Paint. I draw because drawing is the places I have been.I

From the moment I occupy a space I alter its identity. But, likewise, I also suffer a transformation generated by the space that embraces me. It’s a reciprocal experience resulting in two new entities. An untraceable process very intricate to memorize. Presentness is vanished. Through painting and its particular timing I seek to establish a closer, more direct relation with the self and its context; something I have not yet been able to achieve solely through architecture. I do not pursue representing the human being as an image but its contribution to the space they inhabit. The self, the space, the emptiness, the silence, the noise… is all that I pursue.
