Crossing past by the mid of 2016, one had no idea what the world would be going through as to the most unthinkable, the shock, the distress caused worldwide, particularly in Pakistan! The demise of great legends, never to be born again, took their last breath this year, making it one of the darkest years in the history of Pakistan.
Editor-at-Large Maria Asfer Managing Editor Isra Shams Executive Editor Hina Ishtiaq Fashion Editor Dr. Rana Asif
Firstly, the death of Muhammad Ali on 3rd June, took the whole world by shock even though we all knew about his health and sickness, we still could not accept the death of the legend, being one the most famous heavy weight champion in the history of mankind! As a man who never looked down on those who looked up to him, who stood up for his beliefs, and who tried to unite all humankind through faith and love – M. Ali can never be replaced!

Secondly, with the shocking targeted attack on legendary Sufi singer, Amjad Sabri on 22nd June, who lost his life at the very spot of attack, left every eye in tears and every heart sobbing for he was loved and cherished by all. Friends, family members and colleagues described him as someone who was kind-hearted and harboured a warm personality. Amjad Sabri was undoubtedly the face of Pakistan’s qawwali music and he will be sorely missed for his contributions.

Lastly, as one can wish after such a continuous chain of loss, came the death of one of the most noble and humble individual in the history of mankind – Abdul Sattar Edhi, bidding farewell on 6th July 2016. Suffering from kidney failure, Edhi left the entire world at a state of despair and heartache. He was laid to rest with a state funeral honoured to him on behalf of his untiring efforts he had put forward his whole life for the welfare of the nation!

Legends like Muhammad Ali, Amjad Sabri and Abdul Sattar Edhi are amongst those who shall never die in the hearts of every individual, as they have and forever will be alive for us and the world at large, not visually but by heart and emotions, by work and devotion, by efforts and their neverending passion for what they pursued!

FHM: Out of all the other sports in England, what motivated you to choose boxing? Was it your passion or you were forced to choose it as a career? AK: I was hyperactive as a kid, always running around the house, so to burn off my energy my dad took me to the local boxing gym. It was from there I learned about the sport and fell in love with it. I just felt a connection with boxing the first day I entered the gym and knew that this is what I wanted to do with my life. FHM: Your family has always been supportive with your career, is it still the same after marriage? AK: Of course, my family always supports me and give me their full encouragement even if at times it can be hard for them. I have great family support with my wife and parents which has helped me to succeed and achieve special things in the sport. FHM: No wife wants to see her husband all beaten up and bruised, what is Faryal's reaction after every fight since marriage? Has she ever told you to quit boxing? AK: Haha! I think both her and my mom wants me to call it a day. They are concerned for me which is natural because boxing is the toughest sport but I know I still have some good years left in me and that I’m reaching my peak. They understand this and even though it can be hard at times but they are still behind me. FHM: Define your boxing style to our readers? AK: I’m quick, skillful and explosive with fast hands and feet! FHM: You are known for your speed punches, how did you develop this speed? AK: It’s natural – you can’t really teach speed. There are little things you might be able to do to get a bit sharper but speed is something which comes naturally. I’m lucky to have that in my arsenal. FHM: What is that one technique that makes you win the fights? AK: There isn’t really just one technique because at the highest level you need more than just power or speed, you need to have a mix of skills like a good sense of range. For example between yourself and your opponent so you can get in and out without getting caught or good timing. There are so many things you need. FHM: Who was your toughest competitor you faced till date? AK: I think stepping up two weight classes to fight Canelo Alvarez was the toughest
Was he inspired by you or you forced him to choose boxing? AK: I think it is in our blood to be honest. We come from a warrior background so I think Haroon just picked it up naturally too. I’m sure seeing me has encouraged him but he has great natural talent himself and will go far in the sport as long as he is fully dedicated and focused. fight I had to date but I’ve also been in wars with other big punchers like Marcos Maidana which was a very tough fight for me but a great win. FHM: Which is the most memorable fight and victory of your career? AK: I think winning my first world title against Andriy Kotelnik was the most memorable – every champion never forgets that moment. That’s what we strive for as boxers so to achieve that was something I will always remember. FHM: Tell us about Amir Khan Foundation? What made you work on this especially for children? AK: I have always wanted to try and give back. I’m very lucky to have the career I have and be in the position that I’m in so it was something that I always wanted to do. I have a little girl myself and know how much care children need so it was something that always resonated with me. There are many poor kids out there without parents or food or clean water so whatever I can do I will always try to help through the AK Foundation. We have built an orphanage in Gambia and I’m hoping we can do many more projects like that. FHM: What were your expectations from HBL Superstar Boxing Event? AK: It was a great success and I’m hoping we can grow the tournament and as a result grow boxing in Pakistan. There is a great pool of talent here and we just need to tap into it. Tournaments like this bring exposure to boxing in Pakistan and I hope we can have many more events like this in the future. FHM: Was it difficult to bring BIBA boxers to Pakistan? Is it going to be a tough fight between all? AK: The boxers themselves wanted to come and fight here and BIBA were very good in helping facilitate that. Now we have done the first event people will see Pakistan is a safe country and that boxing has great potential to grow here. We will of course have teething problems but that is the same with anything new. FHM: How did Haroon came into boxing?
FHM: How was your experience being part of Super Fight League? AK: It was great being part of it and having a stake. It was something new for me because my background is obviously boxing based. I like to try new things and Super Fight League is already well established with some fantastic MMA fighters but there are still many levels we want to get to. I’m sure over the next few years the company will grow even more as people around the world become familiar with us because we have a great concept and structure in place. FHM: Any plans on opening up Amir Khan Academy in Pakistan? AK: This is one of my hopes! We are looking at a few places at the moment and I definitely hope to open academies throughout
“If you cheat yourself in boxing then you’re not gonna win.” Pakistan soon. This is the next step for us to help boxing grow in the country. I want to give a platform for young kids to come and learn the sport and have great facilities in which to workout. FHM: When are we seeing the pride of Pakistan in the Interntional Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) and the World Boxing Hall of Fame (WBHF)? AK: I was actually there last year in Canastota, New York, where it is based. I was invited to come and visit and it was a great time seeing all the legendary fighters and history there. It’s my dream to get in there. I have to try and cement my legacy with great fights and keep working hard, then hopefully when I do hang up the gloves I will be inducted in one day. FHM: Any message you would like to give to the aspiring boxers and your fans? AK: To the fans, thank you for all your support down the years – it really means a lot to me. To aspiring boxers, just keep working hard and never give up on your dreams.

A Business Mind, Optimist and an entrepreneur from heart. Asad Abdulla, CEO, mycart.pk.
FHM: What is mycart.pk? AA: mycart.pk simply put is an online shopping store but in reality it’s much more. mycart.pk is about a culture within a team of people who are constantly focused on providing the best level of customer service. mycart.pk is about establishing a level of customer service that will ensure fantastic experience of buying online, and receiving the products at your door steps any time of the day. FHM: What is the procedure of delivery at mycart.pk? AA: We have different delivery methods one of which is our express delivery wherever we operate (currently in Karachi) within 2 hours. Other than that we have three time slots for delivery during the day. Along with this we have been able to establish some good brand partnerships as well. Brands that have visited our facility and met with us and have understood what we are about, we are excited that they have come on board. It’s encouraging to see some of these large multinational and national companies being eager about supporting ecommerce because the industry is at its infancy and will need all the support that it can get. With broadband coming in, 3G, 4G being available in most parts of the country, it will create a major shift in buying behavior towards online. FHM: Keeping in mind the strong competitors, how do you plan to raise the bar of mycart.pk? AA: It’s really about building a strong team that is going to provide a superior level of service. Anybody can setup an online store where people can sell products however it’s really about the quality of your operations - how you manage your team and how you maintain that culture within that team of providing the best level of customer service. We believe that the ones that are going to succeed will set their customers at its core so that’s where all our focus is. FHM: Are your employees given the power of decision making? AA: Yes, I guess you will have to ask them how they feel. I like to delegate as much as I can, however ecommerce has been a great learning experience for all of us, even those of us that have been working for long. Ecommerce is new in Pakistan so you can’t always hire the experience that you may like and it’s constantly evolving very quickly, it’s a huge learning curve. For us I guess it’s more about collaboration in decision making, discussing those areas that none of
us specialize at. When one makes a mistake it’s a lesson for all, we just need to ensure we understand what the mistakes were, learn from it, and improve. FHM: What sort of challenges do you face in the competitive digital market of today? AA: In terms of challenges, I think one of the biggest challenges is getting people to shop online, that is target number one. People need to feel comfortable to access your store, know how to make an account, how to navigate through the site, add products to their baskets, know how to check-out, and have the confidence that they will receive what they are ordering. If you buy a phone, dress or even groceries, you tend to want to see the packing, the expiry, make sure it looks good, etc. However as this culture of being online grows, customers will be more and more comfortable with online shopping, but so far this is a big challenge. Further, availability of skilled resources is also a challenge, but that is to be expected in up and coming industry. This industry is going to grow rapidly and people will come on board. Penetration of 3G, 4G and smartphones are the key drivers that will assist in growth. FHM: Being an online market store, how do you assure the customers of the quality of your products? AA: It’s difficult for first time customers to have the confidence that the quality of products they will receive is what they are expecting. That is why we have a very flexible return policy of “no questions asked.” Once customers experience our services in the first order, they generally tend to come back for their next order. FHM: Alongside customer care, how do you manage your brand clients and assure them their productive market share? AA: The relationship we have with brands is more of a partnership then us being a customer and they being a supplier. Traditional retail is about relationships between customer which are the retailers and the manufacturers or owners of brands. It’s a very clear cut relationship. For us it’s really about being once with our brands partners. We want to work together by understanding what their customers preferences are so that they can best serve them, and use us as an avenue to get to do so. It’s all about partnership and winning together through trust, openness and again keeping the customer at our core.
LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO HAVE BORING HAIR THE NEED
Straight shiny hair has it's own charm and I have always wished to have naturally straight hair. To straighten my curly locks it always required a lot of time resulting in flat hair but with no shine and a lot of fizziness. To overcome my problem I was looking for a perfect solution which could take me out of my misery, and it is where I found Schwarzkopf Professional Strait Therapy.
THE CARE
Hair re-bonding is certainly a very tricky process which needs a lot of care after the process is done, highly recommended is the Schwarzkopf Professional Bonacure Repair Rescue Shampoo which will create a protection layer for your Strait Therapy. The technology of Strait Therapy shows significantly better results than ordinary straightening, guaranteeing easy to style, shiny hair every day. I am certainly very happy with the results and I would recommend everyone to rush to salons and ask for this therapy for straight, smooth and silky hair.
THE EXPERIENCE
I must say, making up my mind for the Strait Therapy was the best decision ever made for my hair, giving myself the best re-bonding experience ever. This therapy is an innovative, thermal straightening system which gives easy-to-style perfect straight hair with ultimate shine. Strait Therapy is a re-bonding therapy which is free from harmful chemicals like Formaldehyde without any side effects. Shiny hair is a symbol of health & beauty, this is exactly what I was looking for. The Strait Therapy is the talk of the town because of its process and the harmonisation of active substances, which complement each other during the therapy treatment.

Laila Zubairi
FHM: Tell us about yourself? LZ: I started from my childhood, my father was working in radio which made me thought I could do it as well. I asked him if I can join so he asked me to give the audition first. I gave the audition and got selected and started from children radio programs then moved to dramas as a child artist in Studio no. 9, Kehkashan and etc. I participated in student’s festival as well and won first prize too. The people shifted from radio to television also approached me as a child actress then this thing stopped for a while because I was a college student and after that I got married to an army officer and you know how an army officer and his family’s lifestyle is so I couldn’t get a chance to comeback in this industry for a while. But then we were posted in Quetta where I met Mr.Kazim Pasha. He was very worried because it’s hard to find an actress in Quetta so he humbly asked me to do his play. There was a series by the name of Kirdaar and it was 50 minutes play in 1985. At that time there was only one channel PTV, the day the play was on aired was the very moment which made me famous. Although we were committed to one play but after that offers kept coming in. At first I was hesitating because my kids were young and I was teaching at school already but after a lot of support I restarted my career with my first serial, “Chaaon”.
two people were selected for the lead roles but today everyone has a lot of opportunities and now they are well aware of this industry and are being paid well too. Things change with time obviously because the industry has become commercial and professionalism is lacking. But I must say the new actors are very talented and well educated so this industry is growing in a good way. FHM: What inspired you to open up your own production house? LZ: I was in Islamabad and I noticed that there’s not a single production house there since it was considered as the city that deals with current affairs of our country because it’s the Capital of Pakistan. People never thought that a drama or a film can ever be shot in Islamabad so that was the time I decided to open up my own production house there. Where people can come and showcase their talents. FHM: What are the recent projects under your production house? LZ: I made a tele film as an experiment to know how exactly things are done by casting all the new people because I thought they should get a chance too. Now with the grace of Allah my dramas and sitcoms are aired on HUM TV as well. It’s been a great experience throughout but now I’m unable to do production because a lot of big names are in market and it’s hard to compete with them. And since Karachi has become a hub for media industry that people don’t prefer to come all the way to Islamabad for just one serial.
FHM: How do you keep balance between personal and professional life? LZ: Yes, considering the fact that I’m settled in Islamabad I have to travel a lot and come to Karachi more often. Although people do say that I should settle here for good but for me my family come first and from day one I have set my priorities. Indeed I have a lot of work load at the moment as well but my work is secondary for me and my family is primary. So that’s how I’m able to balance it. I take breaks which are FHM: Being a veteran artist, how do you necessary so that I can give my family see the change in the drama industry? some time too. And I’d like to thank my LZ: Now a days, the work load is a lot. husband for being so supportive and Back then there were only one or two encouraging throughout. channels at that time and out of many
FHM: How do you define your chemistry with your co-actors? LZ: My chemistry flows well with everyone so far I have worked with and it’s probably because I can go with the flow and socialize accordingly. I mean I have friends who are older than me and I even have friends who are younger than me so I don’t restrict myself to a particular social circle. I enjoy doing my work. FHM: What is the secret behind your beauty? LZ: Thanks to Allah firstly but yeah I do take care of my diet because I don’t get time to workout at all. Sometimes I do yoga and try to keep myself fit through that. A crash diet is a big no for me because there are some very prominent side effects of that. I believe in healthy diet. I believe in taking fruits, vegetables and a lot of water.
FHM: Tell us about your upcoming projects? LZ: Recently I’m working for an upcoming movie “Teri Meri Love Story”. It’s a romantic comedy by Jawed Bashir, shot in Lahore. InshAllah it will be released this year only. FHM: Are you brand conscious? LZ: I’m not brand conscious but I like being up to date. I like graceful dressing and that’s about it. FHM: Any message for the new lot in the drama industry? LZ: No matter what work it is if you’re dedicated then you will be successful in life. Be committed to your work.

日本からのご挨拶 Greetings from Japan
Maria Mahesar As I sit in front of my laptop to pen my recently concluded trip to Japan I can't help but look back at some of the best experiences of my life that I have had in Japan. From food to culture, Japan has so much to offer that you need a lifetime to taste the true flavor of this vibrant country. Hear it from someone who has been there thrice and each time I visit Japan there's this natural inkling, desire to learn more about the country. My Japan calling this time around was to attend Red Bull Air Race third stop in Chiba; a thrilling, supercharged, and world's fastest motorsport series. When you think of Japan three cities come to your mind easily- Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. But there are other cities in Japan that may not be mainstream but offer great Japanese experience such as Chiba. A government designated city, the capital of Chiba Prefecture is an hour from Tokyo by train. This is the best city in Japan if you're looking for some peace time. Makuhari Kaihin Park was the perfect escape from my hectic schedule in the evenings. For animal lovers like me Chiba Zoological Park was a must-visit-spot in Chiba. No Chiba experience is complete without paying visit to its cultural attractions such as the Chiba Castle and Chiba Shrine. I just wished my busy schedule had some room to visit Hoki Museum, Chiba City Museum of Science and Chiba Museum of Art. When in Chiba you can't miss the Chiba Port Tower, a visually striking 360 degree view of the entire city and of neighboring cities. While I would spend my mornings and afternoons in Chiba, I would catch the first train in the evening to Tokyo. The capital of Japan has so much to offer; every street speaks of a vibrant culture, every cafe has something new to offer...Tokyo is not your typical city but a city that
yet pleasant offerings. The city is home to the busiest crossings in the world 'Shibuya Crossings' and you can only understand this hypnotic view over the crossing when you're looking from the window of Starbucks on the 2nd floor of the Q-front building across the street (though it’s hard to get a seat). Shibuya with its giant video screens, loud music and crowded streets is guaranteed to give you 'Wow, I'm in Tokyo! Feeling' for sure. If you're a seafood lover like me than Tsukiji Fish Market is the best place to satisfy your seafood cravings. Home to the world's busiest, largest fish market, Tsukiji Fish Market offers live tuna auction (you have to be there at 5am to watch this) and sushi breakfast. Sensoji temple was another memorable experience in Tokyo. Also known as Asakusa Kannon Temple, Sensoji is a Buddhist temple coined as one of Tokyo's most colorful and popular temples. On your way to the temple you can't miss a shopping street of over 200 meters called Nakamise that is home to traditional Japanese souvenirs such as Yukata and folding fans. The Imperial Palace in Tokyo is a large park area surrounded by moats and massive stone walls in the center of Tokyo. It is the residence of Japan's Imperial Family. Another must visit attraction is the Tokyo Tower, an Eiffel Tower inspired lattice tower located in the Shiba-koen district of Minato and is the second-tallest structure in Japan. This is a country that you simply can't get enough of! It may be one of the most technological advanced countries in the world but the fact remains that Japan is one of the few countries in the world that is true to its roots and offers a wide array of cultural aspects that is hard to find in this fast paced world we live in today. If you haven't been to Japan then you haven't seen anything yet; book your tickets now!
