CEO ADDRESS A
s we embark on the second half of the year, I would like to reflect on our 2017 journey as of year-to-date share with you some of the exciting things happening at the hospital. One of the main projects of focus in 2016 was the building and opening of the Palm Harbor Emergency Room. The Palm Harbor ER was officially opened on December 28, 2016, and we are proud to be able to serve more patients in the communities that surround us. It was also announced that Florida Hospital North Pinellas was one of 56 hospitals in the nation, and the only one in Tampa Bay, to be awarded the Top General Hospital Award from the Leapfrog Group in 2016. This was awarded to us based on our patient safety and quality. I am happy to report that we also received another “A” grade in the Hospital Safety Scorecard from the Leapfrog Group, making us the only hospital in Tampa Bay to receive straight A’s for the past 8 semesters. I am thankful to each and every one of our employees. Achieving these awards and recognitions would not be possible without your hard work and dedication to the patients we serve. You can learn more about our recent awards on Page 2. I am also excited to share with you that we have officially announced Jen Segur as our new Chief Nursing Officer/Chief Clinical Officer as of July 9, 2017. Jason Dunkel has also been promoted to Vice President of Business Development and Operations. Jen and Jason are very deserving of these new roles and I know under their leadership this hospital will achieve new heights. Looking forward, we have new capital projects coming up. The ER expansion project, for the onsite ER facility here at the hospital, will increase our capacity to 36,750 patients per year. We have also officially purchased the hotel next to the hospital and are currently in the planning process for the devolpment of that property. Stay tuned for more updates on those projects throughout the rest of this year and into 2018. Throughout this newsletter, you will learn more updates on the hospital, physcians and see some familiar faces we have recognized this year. I wish you a happy and safe summer, I am blessed to be able to work with all of you. You truly make this hospital a wonderful place, and I look forward to seeing what the second half of 2017 will bring. Yours in Service,
Patricia Williams President and CEO

PATIENT TESTIMONIAL For Samantha Schmitz
and her fiance, Alan, it was supposed to be one of the happiest days of their lives - the day their first baby girl would be born into the world. It was a normal pregnancy and started as a routine labor with no complications. All of a sudden, Samantha started feeling different, and that is where their story took a turn. Samantha’s labor was induced and was progressing very well. Dr. Umstead, OB-GYN, noticed some changes on the fetal heart monitor and recommended Samantha be prepared for a C-section. As the team was prepping her, Samantha told them that she was feeling lightheaded. “She tells me that she starts hearing a sound in her throat. So, I go up to her, I get close to her, and it was almost as if her throat was closing up,” recalls Alan. Samantha quickly lost her blood pressure and
oxygenation. Within moments, Samantha blacked out, her eyes rolled to the back of her head, her throat closed up, and she was no longer breathing.
“We immediately unplugged the bed and went to the O.R.” - Ali Morris, RN The team worked together to get to the OR as quickly as possible, although they still were unsure of what was causing Samantha’s symptoms.
Dr. Caraballo, Emergency Medicine, recalls, “By the time I had arrived, she had lost her pulse, she was turning blue, and basically no oxygen was getting to her brain. It appeared [she had] an amniotic embolism, which is an embolism from the placenta that goes up into the lungs and can be life threatening.” Dr. Umstead was able to deliver the baby quickly as the rest of the care team was doing chest compressions on Samantha. They got the baby to the warmer and it had a
very minimal heartrate and no respiratory effort. They intubated the baby and gave it oxygen and the heartrate started to increase. Due to the team’s efforts, Samantha’s heartbeat came back, and both Samantha and the baby began to progress quickly. Samantha stayed overnight in the ICU and was back on the 8th floor the next day. The teamwork it took during this code to save not only Samantha’s life, but also their baby’s, was truly special. Mark Nelson, Nurse Anesthetist,
says, “I’ve been doing this for 17 years, and this case was probably the most gratifying and amazing case that I’ve been a part of. I’m really proud of the team here at North Pinellas.” “It’s good to have that staff there to know what they’re doing, and to save your life,” says Alan. Samantha would like to give a special message to our staff, “Thank you, you did a wonderful job. I don’t think you could do a better job. I have a healthy daughter, and I’m still here. I’m here
to be with her, raise her and watch her grow. If it wasn’t for you, it may not have been that way.”
“Knowing that the staff at Florida Hospital cared for me made me feel special.” - Samantha Schmitz Care Team: Dr. Thomas Umstead OB-GYN, Dr. Damian Caraballo - Emergency Medicine, Mark Nelson Anesthesiology, Ali Morris, RN, Jackie Yeagley, RN, Bobbie Douglas, RN, and Kristi Dotter, RN.

Over the past few months, Florida Hospital
North Pinellas has hosted many events for our employees and community members. Our CREATION Health committee kicked off the spring season with a Walk to the Keys Step Challenge. Hospital employees formed teams of three and had to average at least 10,000 steps each per day for 30 days in order to walk the 900,000 steps it took to get to the Keys from Tarpon Springs. Some of our teams went above and beyond, finishing with more than double the amount of required steps.
The 5th Annual Ask the Experts event was held on June
28th at Innisbrook Golf Resort and Spa. Over 800 community members came out to learn more about our service lines, visit with vendors, enjoy a complimentary dinner, and ask their health questions to the doctors. Our physician panel answered questions that were submitted, and a raffle followed.
