As we head into summer and reach the halfway point in 2015, I would like to take this time to reflect on the accomplishments we have made as a hospital. We continue to see tremendous growth in many departments. Our inpatient discharges are up 18% over last year, and the Emergency Department has seen 15% growth over last year. It is exciting to see more community members coming to Florida Hospital North Pinellas in their times of need. We have also received some exciting awards and recognitions within the last six months. The hospital was awarded an “A” in patient safety from Leapfrog, making this the fourth consecutive semester we have been granted this honor. We were reaccredited as a Chest Pain Center and Primary Stroke Center by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. The American Heart Association also presented our facility with the Get with the Guidelines – Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award, meaning we demonstrated at least 85% of compliance for seven achievement measures for 24 consecutive months. We continue to focus on expanding our footprint in the community through expansion of our service lines and our community outreach programs. We recently opened our new outpatient physical therapy location in Trinity, FL, which is off to a great start. In April, a team of 2 physicians and 12 employees went on a mission trip to India. Through medical screenings, vaccinations, and education, they provided care to over 1,050 people in the villages around Delhi. This June, we hosted our third annual Ask the Experts event at Innisbrook Golf Resort & Spa. Over 700 people attended the event, and we provided over 400 health screenings. As you can see, 2015 has been a fantastic year so far, and I hope to see this much success and community outreach throughout the summer and the rest of the year. I wish the entire Florida Hospital North Pinellas family a safe and wonderful summer.
Yours in Service,
Bruce Bergherm

Mayor’s Fitness Challenge
National Nutrition Month
In March of this year, our Food Services team worked with the Tarpon Springs Mayor’s office during the Mayor’s Fitness Challenge. They presented five classes to the public and hospital staff, with topics including: How to Read Nutrition Labels, Eating to Help Keep Diabetes at Bay, Portion Control at the Dinner Table, Processed vs. Whole Foods, and Chef Healthy Cooking Demo. The staff handed out free samples and recipes and Chef also discussed healthy grilling ideas. They also participated in a Community Health Fair at Tarpon Springs Recreation Department where they had weigh-ins and free fruit for the public.
Tampa Bay Lightning
Official Health and Wellness Sponsor
This year, Florida Hospital was the Official Health and Wellness sponsor for the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning had a fantastic year, making it all the way to the Stanly Cup Finals, which in turn helped raise awareness for the Florida Hospital brand. Florida Hospital was featured in the Tampa Bay Business Journal for our sponsorship. In addition to the great press, the Florida Hospital logo became one of four permanent logos on center ice! Because of our partnership, employees receive exclusive perks including discounted season tickets and pre-sale opportunities. Florida Hospital
IMAX Dome Theatre Another exciting partnership for Florida Hospital is with the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI). Florida Hospital presented MOSI with a $2 million gift to keep their science center moving forward and to help convert their IMAX Dome. As you can see below, our logo is prominently displayed on the side of MOSI. Florida Hospital employees get free admission to MOSI as a benefit of our partnership. Employees can also bring up to five guests for a discounted $5 admission and will receive discounts on movies, summer camps and educational programs.
Medical Outreach Mission Trip In April of this year, 12 employees and 2 doctors went on a mission trip to Delhi, India for two weeks. The trip was fully funded by donations and fundraising efforts. The mission trip members split up into two teams, one medical team and one children’s team. The medical team provided vaccinations and medical care to over 1,050 people. They helped eight different villages with treatments for hepatitis, TB, Typhoid and Malaria. Members of this team were also able to educate the villages on prevention of typhoid, malaria, cholera and hepatitis. The children’s team brought supplies to the schools and spent time with the kids in each village. They taught them about health and wellness and showed them activities to stay healthy and active. A portion of the money raised helped purchase a new bus so the church could transport families to and from services. Other items that were provided included a wheelchair, guitar and over 50 Bibles and devotionals in both English and Hindi. We would like to sincerely thank the medical outreach team for their commitment to the Florida Hospital mission, Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ, and for serving those in need near and far. If you would like to be part of the next mission trip, please do not hesitate to contact Erin Farmer or Tory Flood for more information. They would love to have you on the team!
Celebrate Life
Celebrating the Life of Logan Trull Earlier this year, the Tampa Bay Lightning celebrated and recognized a Florida Hospital North Pinellas patient and nurse during a ceremony at a home game. When patient Logan Trull arrived at our facility, he was suffering from muscle aches and severe jaw spasms, and he was diagnosed with tetanus. He had stepped on a nail three weeks prior and had not kept up-to-date with his tetanus shot. Logan was put on a ventilator for weeks in order to help keep his condition from worsening. Nurse Lydia Chavez-Richards stayed with him and his family through his entire recovery. She also kept a journal for him so he would know about his experience when he woke up. To view the story and ceremony, visit the Florida Hospital North Pinellas YouTube channel.
