Mr. John Walton By Keri Kipp Entertainment Editor Retiring from teaching does not always mean retiring from working. So, while Mr. John Walton, a social studies teacher, will wrap up his successful 30 -year teaching career in September, he will still find something to occupy his time. Mr. Walton is choosing to retire from his teaching career because even though he loves teaching, he would
like to pursue other things in his life before he becomes too old. During his 30-year career, Mr. Walton taught in the Bethlehem Area School District at both Northeast and Freedom and in the Allentown Area School District. In addition to teaching social studies courses, Mr. Walton also volunteers with the Freedom wrestling team. At one time, he was the assistant Free-

Mrs. Jordan has had a big impact on this school as the Athletic Director for Freedom. Prior to her moving into the position, Mrs. Jordan taught Business Education; coached Freedom cheerleading, cross country, and track and field; and has been
the advisor of DECA and FBLA. After retirement, Mrs. Jordan plans to spend her time with family, relax, and play golf. She also looks forward to babysitting her granddaughter. The thing that Mrs. Jordan is going to miss the most out of her 35-year career is the students and athletes who she has had the opportunity to work with in all of her years. She has made so many special bonds over the
dom varsity wrestling coach. After retirement, Mr. Walton plans to dabble in real estate, renovations, and house flipping. Furthermore, Mr. Walton would like to travel to the places that he has taught about in the past, such as the beaches of Normandy. Mr. Walton will miss working with the children because that is why he entered the teaching profession. He will also profoundly miss many individuals who he has met throughout his career.
Mr. Walton leaves a professional work ethic in which he hopes that his colleagues recognize. He also hopes that his students will remember the passion that he shared with them in class. “With whatever you want to do in life, live it with passion,” said Mr. Walton. Mr. Safranek lives his life by treating others how he likes to be treated. “Up until a few years ago, if you would have asked me what students associated with Mr. Safranek it would have been ‘club Safranek’ on Fridays. However, Bill has had a much bigger impact on Freedom Family in recent years. His commitment to fundraising for BASD Mini-THON has been unbelievable! In three years, he has advised and helped raise almost $300,000 for pedi-

Not all teachers retire at the end of a school year. In fact, Mrs. Paula Laughlin, science teacher, retired in January 2016. Unfortunately, Mrs. Laughlin was not available for an interview; thus, Mr. Eric Baltz, science teacher and department chair, provides a humorous anecdote in order to celebrate Mrs. Laughlin’s retirement. “A funny memory I have of Mrs. Laughlin was from last year during PATE block. In December for the 18
holiday door decorating contest, her students used a Grinch theme. Well, they took a picture of Mrs. Laughlin’s face and cut out a Grinch hat and clothing to use with the picture. It was perfect! She took is all in stride and went along with it. Now every time I see the Grinch on TV I have to

Although Mrs. Martel-
luci is retiring from her teaching career at the end of this school year, she will be leaving a very good statement and mark on the school itself.
“Everybody remembers what it's like to be in high school. We really never leave those years behind.” - Nikki DeLoach Leaving high school behind is a bittersweet moment full of anticipation and anxiety. The memories of four years in a diverse community come rushing back in a flood of snippets, wanting to embed themselves into the brain. When I graduated high school, I remember the euphoric feeling of freedom - pun intended. It was not until the next school year started without me that I realized that my high school years were
over...gone… memories. At the end of each school year, I am reminded of my own need to escape the confines of childhood and rush into adulthood. I feel it even now through Elyse and Julia, who continue to push forward with creating the senior edition of the newspaper, but really just want to go home. I see it in Roland and Shauna as they put their heads down in class, wishing that they when they open their eyes the room would change to Stabler Arena. I hear it in Samantha’s voice, as she talks about how bored she is and cannot wait until finals are over and how she

One would think as the incoming editor-and-chief to be that I would be able to find words for my excitement; however, I just cannot. I am so thrilled to have the privilege of this position. I am looking forward to capturing moments, meeting students, and putting out a great newspaper every month. It is also an especially exciting year for The Freedom Forum because it is our 50th Anniversary. It is incredible to think about the ways in which our newspaper has grown and changed over time. During next school year, the newspaper staff and I want to honor the 50th year celebration in whatever way we can. We want to make the 50th editions something to remember. We want the newspaper staff at the 100th year anniversary to smile and say, “Hey, this is good stuff.” Next year is going to be great. I want our newspaper to reflect
is looking forward to attending Temple. Yes, it is exciting. It is nerve-wracking. It is joyous. It is painstaking. But it is also all worth it in the end. Since 2009 when I took over the newspaper and journalism program, I have been surrounded by many bright, original, and outgoing students. From the onset, the student leadership of the newspaper continues to amaze me with its innovation, compassion, and dedication to something that seems trivial to many—a school newspaper. But this is no ordinary
on the successes and trends that the year will bring. I want to highlight the great events that our school does to contribute to the community. I also want our newspaper to relate to diverse students who have different interests. With a newspaper staff as wonderful as The Freedom Forum, I know we can pull off all of these things. While writing and editing for the newspaper can be challenging at times, I am going to strive to ensure that it is always fun. After weeks of hard work (conducting interviews, taking pictures, and laying it all out) there is nothing better than looking at the finished Freedom Forum and feeling that surge of pride in what we accomplished. I am thrilled to see what next year brings. The Freedom Forum staff and I are ecstatic to enter the 2016-2017 school year with a bang. The 50th year of Freedom’s newspaper is going to bring great things that I am so excited to share with you all.

school newspaper or journalism program. These students—over 40 journalists this year—engage in a world that has them discussing politics, even though very few of them can vote. The Freedom Forum pushes students to search for news, to market their publication, to consider others’ opinions, and to recognize their own biases. It also pushes me to find ways to be more innovative each year as well, which in the end keeps me young...and tired. I will end this year by saying a fond farewell to the seniors. I truly wish them much success and
Not only did senior year fly by, but also did all four years of high school. Not once did I see myself freshman year performing the dauntless task of laying out a 12-page newspaper in five days or less every month, but here I am. I have probably spent more time in room 210 the past four years of high school compared to any other classroom in the building. Not only did I have Mrs. Erdman as journalism teacher all four years of high school, but I also had her for honors English 10 and homeroom; thus, I came to the conclusion that I was never able to escape her. After taking journalism with Mrs. Erdman freshman year, she urged me to take the class again sophomore and to join The Forum. At first, I declined the offer, but once I realized how much I missed it, I decided to take journalism sophomore year and become a member of newspaper. That one decision led me to become the web editor junior year, and ultimately, the editor-in-chief this year. Watching Anissa Vasquez, the former editor-in-chief, layout the newspaper several times created extreme nervousness for me. There was so much to remember, and everything was extremely meticulous, yet she made it look effortless. Fortunately for me, I figured it out. This year, The Freedom Forum has faced several hurdles such as having
happiness in all that they do. While Pink Floyd may sing that “you’re just another brick in the wall,” I do not feel that way. I truly cherish the time I have spent with these wonderful young adults, and I hope they have fond memories as well.

only 12 journalism students first semester, which is where the bulk of our articles are written. However, we worked hard and were able to create a successful newspaper. In addition, we updated the look of our website and are publishing several articles specifically for the website. Additionally, The Freedom Forum won first place in the American Scholastic Press Association contest, which made the countless hours of hard work the staff put in each month even more worth it. I am so proud that I was part of that. Next year, I plan to attend Penn State University Park and major in marketing. This year, I have truly learned the importance of leadership and understanding that it is okay when things go wrong. That is how people learn to persevere and problem-solve issues. I wish Gabriella Greenhoward, Mrs. Erdman, and the staff good luck not only next year, but also in the years to come.
