Newsletter February 2011 FHS pupils visit the Christmas market in Germany

From the Headmistress Dear Parents, The spring term began with GCSE mock examinations for the Upper Fifth, which they undertook with impressive commitment. The Higher Education Evening, which will be held on Wednesday March 16th for all Lower Sixth girls and their parents, is an important event, which will provide information about the UCAS application process and the ways in which the school offers guidance and support for all university applications, including those to Oxford and Cambridge colleges and to American universities.

Happy Shoppers of the Lower Fourth

The German Department braved the snow and organised a whistle-stop tour for twenty girls in the Lower Fourth to visit the Christmas markets in Cologne. The girls enjoyed a weekend with snow, visiting the fairy-tale Christmas market and the traditional atmospheric Christmas market in front of the old, impressive cathedral in the centre of Cologne. The famous Lindt Chocolate Museum was also a highlight during the stay. A short way from the seasonally decorated youth hostel was the centre of Cologne and the girls came across signs of other local customs, hundreds and hundreds of small engraved locks and padlocks with the name of loved ones fixed to the rail of the oldest bridge in Cologne.

Drama rehearsals are being held every day after school, as forms prepare for the preliminary heats of the interform drama competition. The 133rd School Birthday will be celebrated on February 16th, when the finals of the inter-form drama competition will also be held.

This was our first visit to the Christmas markets. Despite the cold we had a marvellous time and hope to revisit Cologne in years to come. Sincere thanks to Mrs. Wright and Herr Diesel who also accompanied the trip. Mrs. Edwards Head of Modern Foreign Languages Department

We are privileged to have several distinguished speakers coming to address extra-curricular events this term, including Professor Chris Carey of University College London who will lecture on Lysias’ speech against Eratosthenes at an after-school classics event on Tuesday 8th March.

annual Parents’ Association Social Event on Thursday May 5th will be sent to you later this term; please keep the date free if you would enjoy an opportunity to meet other FHS parents in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.

St. Edward's pupils enjoy Forensics Fun at FHS On Thursday 30th November 2010 the Science department was pleased to welcome sixteen pupils from St Edward’s School for an afternoon of Forensics Fun. The Year 5 and 6 pupils braved the falling snow to arrive ready for action. Pupils spent the afternoon experimenting with a variety of fingerprinting techniques, with the aid of several sixth form helpers. We took our fingerprints using ink, aluminium powder and a magnetic powder and analysed them by examining the pattern of arches and whorls. At the end of the afternoon we all headed to the Gloucester Room for orange juice and cakes and to compare the prints we had taken. Many thanks to the pupils and staff of St. Edward’s School and to the members of the sixth form who gave up their time to help.

Mathematics Inspiration for Sixth Formers! On Monday the 14th November 2010 a group of enthused AS Maths students from Francis Holland went on an expedition to the Criterion Theatre for a series of lectures. In school, an inconsolable cry of “but what’s this actually used for in real life?” can often be heard resounding throughout the corridors outside the Maths room; the lectures we attended told us just that.

in gambling! Broadcaster Simon Singh even told us how Mathematics led Katie Melua into his life and how he has influenced her accuracy in lyric writing. However, the most interesting of the lectures for me was given by Ed McAnn, a civil engineer who is working on the London 2012 Olympic Velodrome Building. Ed McAnn defined maths as not only the study of number, but of structure, space, quantity, and change. In his talk, Mr. McAnn applied maths to every-day things; he uses it in his daily activity. The sheer quantity of “vital vector calculations” that must be used in the building of bridges,

During the morning, the group was told about the use of Mathematics in computer graphics, forming predictions and even ‘prophecies’ according to ‘The Bible Code’, and how to use maths to your advantage F R A N C I S

for example, was quite frankly disconcerting. Nonetheless, he made his audience more aware of the relevance of mathematics in objects and structures that many of us mere mortals will use on a day-to-day basis, but take for granted. The time spent in Piccadilly was enjoyed all round, by both pupils and staff. Thanks to the trip’s initiator, Mrs. Martin, Head of Mathematics, for enabling the trip and making sure everything ran smoothly! Thea Waxman, LVI RLR

Carol Service in St. Cyprian’s Church The traditional FHS Carol Service was held in the final week of term, in St. Cyprian’s Church. We were delighted to welcome back former Head of the R.S. Department, the Rev'd J. Locke, who officiated at both the afternoon and the evening Carol Services. Miss Addinall, who will retire as Deputy Head at the end of this academic year, represented the staff and read the eighth lesson. The Carol Service was enhanced by glorious musical performances from soloists and both the junior and senior choirs.

FHS pupils perform at the Lansdowne Club Charity Christmas Concert

The String Orchestra

Our charity concert at the Lansdowne Club always has an air of excitement, since it heralds the start of the FHS Christmas musical festivities. Although I have travelled half way round the globe with many of these singers, our annual trip by tube to the club in the middle of rush hour is still quite a nightmare! However, we arrive safely out of a crowded Green Park tube and after much shushing in the street, we enter sedately! An hour and a half of rehearsals, scrumptious sandwiches in a beautiful satin wood dining room, brushed hair, no trainers, no jeans and no mobile phones [club rules] and hey presto! - a magical transformation into a well disciplined beautifully presented choir and orchestra. The choir filled the Ball Room with the music of Britten, Handel and Mendelssohn, enhanced by beautiful solo singing from Kim Tance, Emma Roberts, Rebecca Lumley, Laila El-Khazen, Bethany Wright and Charlotte Prinsley. Charlotte Amherst led the string orchestra in the Gigue from J.S. Bach’s Suite in D and this year we also included some stunning instrumental solos from Misa Saka, Natasha Lucas and Claudia Selby. There were eloquent Christmas readings from Rafi Elliston and Zoe Silkstone and the audience joined in lustily with the carols. One lady commented on how wonderful they were and that she didn’t think that they made children like this any more! Who would have thought that four days previously some of these girls had been members of the seedy Kit Kat Club in the school production of Cabaret? Mrs. Rolfe-Johnson Director of Music

Cabaret There was a cabaret, and there was a Master of Ceremonies ...

It’s hard to believe that it’s all over. I am talking about “Cabaret”, the project that dominated my autumn term. The hired costumes and borrowed props have gone back, the set has been dismantled and the lighting de-rigged. But we still have our memories – lots of them like Cliff at the end of the play, leaving Berlin on a make-believe train with his head full of memories of the Kit Kat Klub, the people of Berlin he met, the “World’s craziest girl” he fell in love with and who chose her singing career over motherhood ... I too am haunted.

In the Kit Kat Klub

The train from Berlin

It was the end of the world and I was dancing with Sally Bowles, and we were both fast asleep ... “Cabaret” has some truly great songs in it, some heart-wrenching moments that play themselves over and over. Mrs Rolfe Johnson and I are extremely grateful to all those parents and colleagues whose generosity allowed the production to happen, and terribly proud of the cast and crews whose performances just got stronger over three terrific nights. Well done to all of you! Mrs Oakley Director of Cabaret English and Drama Department

Parents' Association News A very happy new year to all our members! We hope you have all had a wonderful festive season; batteries are recharged and ready to take on 2011! The Parents’ Association events last term were a huge success: • The Annual General Meeting and talk by four eminent speakers on “How our daughters can succeed in the workplace” had the best attendance on record. It was a fascinating evening, not only entertaining but informative at the same time, with great food to boot! I hope this will encourage others to join us in October 2011 for the next AGM when, for the first time, we will be having a Quiz Night – entertainment in itself! • The Christmas Fair was an outstanding success raising £3000 profit. Every year group was involved in one way or another helping with this momentous event and I cannot express highly enough my gratitude to all those who helped make it so enjoyable and herald in the festive season. I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate that the entire Parents’ Association events during the year have three main aims: 1. To facilitate a link between home and school 2. Offer an opportunity for more social interaction between parents 3. Raise as much money as possible to support the charities adopted by the school and assist in purchasing items on the Teachers’ Wish Lists. We cannot, however, achieve any of these goals without your valuable support and thank you for all your help to date and in the future. Our main social event will take place on 5th May 2011 – please look out for your invitation to arrive in the post during March and we would urge you to respond as early as possible so as not to be disappointed as places are limited.

Equestrian Club go to the Horse of the Year Show On the 20th of December an eager group of girls set off to the annual Horse of the Year show at Olympia. Once we arrived at the impressive Olympia stadium, we were all allowed to wander around the countless shops of horse merchandise browsing through the smell of varnished leather tinted with the smell of horse. When the show was about to commence, we all spilled into the actual arena, where the 1.60m jumps were set up for the under 16 riders of the show-jumping event that was soon to amaze our eyes. They all cleared majestically except for one rider who flew over the horse’s neck and landed uncomfortably on the floor! Next came the Shetland Pony Grand National, where very young riders were placed on the back of the fluffy Shetland ponies and zoomed around jumping the bracken fences that were set up for them. Our expectations were exceeded when a group of Ukrainian riders, galloped in, performing eccentric stunts on horseback. This was also followed by a remarkable routine by the Household Cavalry. Santa Claus arriving in his sleigh, pulled by two stunning ‘reindeer’ (that seemed to look suspiciously like horses!), brought a Christmas atmosphere to the Grand Finale. We were so glad to have had another brilliant experience with horses thanks to Miss Baig and Dr Welch. Bea Kilgour, LVB, and Zoe Suerdem, LVN

HELP FUND

Bella Boyle (UVIKO), Scarlett Stroud (UVIFM), Ella Roeg (UVIAC) and Louisa Dearman (UVIFM) of the Fashion Show Committee presenting their cheque to representatives of Marie Cuie Cancer Care and the Teenage Cancer Trust

The Help Fund has enjoyed a massively successful autumn term, raising a triumphant twenty thousand pounds for various charities chosen by both the school and the girls. The term saw an enormous variety of events, including the sponsored walk, the Fashion Show and events in aid of the South Africa Tour along with numerous (and much welcomed) cake sales, a hilarious Glee competition, various quizzes and even a Christmas card making event! The girls have proven that they are able to be endlessly inventive and creative with their fund-raising ideas and their enthusiasm always ensures each event is a success! The annual Poppy Appeal was also held in school with the Head Girl’s Team selling poppies and explaining its sentiment and symbolism, and the Christmas Carol Concert was an ideal opportunity to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society. Some of the other charities that have been able to

benefit from the girls’ hard work last term include Marie Curie Cancer Care, The Teenage Cancer Trust, Help for Heroes, HAPPA, St. Amedeus School, St. Edward’s Primary School and Right to Play. We are exceptionally proud of our girls’ capabilities when it comes to the ideas surrounding these charity events as well as the planning involved and seeing it through to the end, and the letters of thanks from the charities we have supported extend their gratitude to our girls for their time and effort. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank parents for their continuing generosity in our Help Fund endeavours, and to say that we are looking forward to another successful term ahead! Miss Farthing Head of Help Fund

UPPER FIFTH CHARITY EVENT: GLEE Every year the Upper Fifth host a charity event raising money for the Rainbow Centre in Sri Lanka. ‘The Rainbow Centre works to enable children to break free from a cycle of poverty that would otherwise trap them in a world of crime, begging, addiction and abuse.’ It is a very worthwhile charity and if you would like more information please visit www.rainbowcentresrilanka.com .

SIXTH FORM SCHOLARSHIPS 2011-2013 This year more than twenty Upper Fifth girls sat the Sixth Form FHS scholarship examination. The following girls should be enormously proud of their achievements. Congratulations!

This year the theme was GLEE and each class had to perform a short dance routine to a popular song. The winning class was UIVM, well done!

Academic Scholarships Zoe Cannell Stephanie Gunther Zoe Silkstone

Middlesex Gymnastics Floor and Vault Competition 2011 On Sunday 16th January the FHS Gymnastics squad competed in the Regional Floor and Vault competition at The Lady Eleanor Holles School in Hampton. Each gymnast had to complete a one minute floor routine, according to a specification, and complete two vaults. It is a very hard competition and this year the junior squad were placed fourth out of ten in the under 13A category. All girls were a credit to themselves and the school. FHS Sports Report Well, after some serious talks with the Regent’s Park bosses I cannot get Regent’s canal permanently frozen so we can do ice-skating for the spring term! Hopefully though, this term will swing back to a warmer disposition and we will enjoy all of the budding blossoms of the spring season, and hang on to your seats, as there is a lot to fit in. Francis Holland has already competed in the Middlesex Gymnastics competition this January – more to report in the next edition of the Sports Report, but we are all very proud of how the girls presented themselves. Due to the success of last year’s Thirds' and Lower Fourth's Dance Workshop, the girls will once again be studying cultural dance from Africa and India during lessons in a one off session. Our rescheduled Interform Hockey tournament will take place in the week preceding half term, fingers crossed for thawed pitches! And half term break will arrive before we know it. It is all systems go for after the break, with the u12 & u13 Middlesex Netball tournament at LEH. This event is closely

followed by our much loved Gym and Dance Display in the school Hall. Interspersed throughout the term of course, will be our numerous fixtures which are set to dodge and duck around all of the other events on the school calendar. Towards the end of the term we are starting our trials for the Rounders and Tennis teams early this year due to the short Summer term. Then the final icing on the spring term cake comes in the form of the Interform Netball tournament, where each form challenges the other in a great afternoon’s fun. Congratulations to all girls who received a Sports Commendation at the end of the Autumn term. Your effort, determination and commitment were certainly noticed and the PE Department will be on the lookout this spring term for more worthwhile recipients. Fixture lists and other important information will be updated on the school website, so please do keep an eye on what’s going on sports-wise. Please do try and come along to support your daughters and school for these fantastic events.
