Francis Holland School Newsletter July 2015 Chamber Choir at the Royal Albert Hall
From the Headmistress Dear Parents, It was lovely to see so many of you informally at the tennis courts in Regent’s Park for the “hit and giggle” barbecue and tennis evening for parents and daughters organised by Mrs Laurel Rafter and the Parents’ Association Committee on Friday 5th June. Bespoke red and grey FHS m&ms were one of many inspired touches that made the evening so enjoyable! As ever, the second half of the summer term has been brimming with extracurricular activity and the main highlights are detailed in this newsletter. This week, the Hall and the stage have been transformed (or “trashed”?!) into the set for Skellig, this term’s school play, which is being produced and directed by Mrs Kate Oakley. Extra-curricular activities are co-ordinated by a senior member of staff, Miss Clare MacDonnell (clare.macdonnell@fhs-nw1.org.uk). Please do not hesitate to contact Clare should you ever have any queries about any club or extra-curricular event. Each term’s extra-curricular schedule of clubs before, during and after school, is available on the school website. FHS/ RP students are expected to attend at least three extra-curricular activities or clubs per week – many choose to attend far more than this. The Upper Sixth leavers' evening is always a happy and nostalgic event – for teachers, parents and the Upper Sixth themselves! We wish all this year’s Upper Sixth leavers the very best of luck in their adult lives and thank them for the exceptionally strong contribution they have made to all aspects of school life during their F r a n c i s

Particular thanks go to Danah Cred (Head Girl), who led an outstanding Head Girl’s team: Saskia de Borchgrave Niblett; Estella Macchi di Cellere; Sarah Kehoe; Stella Moore; Ayesha Mukherjee; Reem Satti; Olivia Turner. During the summer holidays, several areas of the school will be redecorated and refurbished. Work on the new school swimming pool is progressing well. The new pool is due to be completed and available for use towards the end of next term. There will be a formal opening event in late spring 2016. Mr Mark Chiverton and Mr Adrian Smith will be leading FHS Summer Camp 2015, accompanied by Miss Kay Hotchkiss and Ms Flora Barton. This year marks the tenth anniversary of FHS Summer Camp, which was established by Mr Mark Chiverton (Head of Thirds). As usual, a group of children in “looked after care” with Westminster Council will have an all expenses paid week’s holiday at Sayer’s Croft, organised by a team of Sixth Form volunteers and FHS teachers. My sincere thanks to all colleagues who lead by example

The ten girls in Lower Fifth who take IGCSE Music, with two other girls helping with ensembles, put on a very polished and assured concert on Tuesday 16th June in School Hall. This is first time that the Lower Fifth alone have put on a concert, and there was a lovely mix of repertoire featuring many solos and also some ensembles; indeed it was also the first performance by the school's new piano trio group playing some Frank Bridge. The success of this concert will establish this event for future years. Mr Robert Patterson Director of Music

Lower Fifth Engineering and Physical Sciences Day
Eva Gimpel-Oxinalde, Amy Hobson, Tilly Acton learning about Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology
On National Women in Engineering Day, a group of lower fifth students attended a discovery day for engineering and the physical sciences at Birmingham University. The event was designed to provide students with an insight into the fascinating and varied careers options available in these exciting scientific fields. The workshops the girls attended were in particle physics, materials science, chemical, mechanical and civil engineering. The activities included designing a medical cast for a broken
bone, making a fuel cell as well as attempting to discover the Higgs Boson particle. It was an excellent opportunity to get a flavour of what academic life is like at university and to explore the vast array of options available for students who study the sciences and mathematics. area. Dubbed "Eton of the East" by the Sunday Times, LAE has already achieved Oxbridge success with four of its first A Level cohort gaining places at Oxford and Cambridge.
Just before half term, Miss Zugg (Academic Deputy Head) and Mr Ward (Head of Science) visited the London Academy of Excellence in Stratford as part of a new initiative between our two schools. The initial visit has already been followed by a further visit to LAE by Mr Ward and Miss Langley (Head of Psychology) and their counterparts at LAE have also visited FHS this term.
We look forward to furthering our links with LAE in the future and hope that there will be opportunities for joint activities amongst students in both schools.

Lower Fourth Geography Trip to the Thames Barrier On Friday 12th June, the Geography Department took the Lower Fourth girls to the Thames Barrier and Olympic Site to climb the Orbit. We embarked on a boat trip at Westminster Pier, travelling downstream to the Thames Barrier. The weather was beautiful and the girls enjoyed taking in the sights of London, whilst improving their sense of place. Once we docked at the Thames Barrier, the girls visited the Information Centre and learnt about the effects of climate change, why London needs the barrier and the future of the scheme. They
also walked along the long profile of the Thames, getting a sense of scale as the river meanders from its source to the mouth. We then travelled to the Olympic Site where the girls saw the land use changes in and around the site since the 2012 Olympics. We caught a lift to the top of the Orbit for spectacular views of the Park, the Olympic Stadium and beyond, before walking the 400 steps back down. My thanks go to the girls for their excellent behaviour and to the members of staff who accompanied me on the trip. Miss Jo Hallett Geography Department

Lower Sixth Biology and Geography Study Weekend to Norfolk Geographers and biologists from the Lower Sixth enjoyed a trip to Cromer in Norfolk from the 19-21st June to practice their data collection skills. Accompanied by Ms Hack, Mrs Freeley and Mrs Lockwood, the girls studied the biotic and abiotic features of sand dunes. They collected data on the Winterton sand dunes before engaging in statistical analysis in the computer laboratories at Overstrand Hall. In the evenings, the girls took advantage of the chance to test their mettle on the climbing tower and flex their archery skills on the shooting range. This trip provides an invaluable opportunity for the urban girls to gain experience of some exceptional and diverse habitats, and adds some real-world context to their academic studies. Skellig – Junior Play, June 2015 Many girls from the Thirds and the Lower Fourth auditioned to be a part of this year’s Junior Play, Skellig, an adaptation of his children’s novel of 1998, by David Almond. The story concerns a ten-year old boy, Michael, who has recently moved with his family to a tumble-down house. His new baby sister was born prematurely and has a heart condition, which takes up all of his parents’ attention. As Michael explores the dilapidated garage of his new home he discovers a strange man living there. This is Skellig, grumpy, arthritic and demanding, requesting aspirin and Chinese takeaways which Michael provides. He also brings Mina the girl next door to help rescue Skellig. In doing so they discover he has wings at his shoulder blades. More mysteriously when Michael’s baby sister becomes dangerously ill in hospital, his mother dreams of seeing Skellig come in and heal the baby. Skellig's farewell (Charlotte, Charlotte-Rose, Iona)
This story of love and faith was beautifully acted. Charlotte McBurney gave a subtle and engaging performance as Michael, ably assisted by Charlotte Rose-Allan as Mina, who captured the character’s quirky inquisitive nature. Iona Geidt was arresting as Skellig, emerging from beneath hessian sacks onstage and later revealing an exquisite pair of specially hand-made wings. The set of the interior of the garage (created by Roise Bowyer’s parents) was stunning. The play was clever, moving, and funny and even included a hilarious dance for arthritis patients at the hospital! Several members of the audience were moved to tears by the end. Many thanks to Mrs Oakley and Miss Hine, their talented team, and above all, to more than thirty girls who took part both onstage and behind the scenes. 2015 Upper Fourth Activi ty Week at Knapp House On Sunday 21st June the Upper Fourth set off from London to Appledore, North Devon, for a week of activities at the annual Knapp House trip. As always the week provided the group with an opportunity to participate in a range of activities, gain in confidence and achieve things that they did not think they were capable of. We started the week off by enjoying an evening stroll at the nearby town of Clovelly. This was a welcomed relief after a long coach journey. The rest of the week we were kept busy by taking part in three activities per day including abseiling, rockwall climbing, tunnelling, a low ropes course, surfing, water skiing, pedal cart racing and a coastal walk in Westward Ho!
The girls were supported by the Knapp House instructors who encouraged them to take "that extra step" and get the most from all that was on offer. Many memories were made throughout the week and the Upper Fourth were hugely impressive in both their attitude and what they achieved throughout the week. They were ready to dive into any challenge without complaint, and willing to support one another along the way. My thanks goes to Mr Smith, Miss Hallett, Miss Lamas, Ms Barton and Miss Fernandez who helped to make the trip a fantastic week. Miss Julie Laytham Head of Upper Fourth

Participants, from Year 7 to the Sixth Form, gave impressive performances and a very high standard was reached throughout.
The Lower and Upper Sixth physicists attended a series of lectures at the Institute of Education, University of London. These included talks on superconductivity, the big bang, astrophysics and the physics of music. The most prestigious speaker was the famous scientists and author Dr Simon Singh. During the lunch interval Katia Pagano managed to chat to him about her extended project, How is our scientific understanding of the concept of “nothing hindering our ability to understand the origin of our universe? Katia was also able to ask him about his experiences as a student at Imperial College London, as she has accepted a place to read Physics there from September. It was an excellent day and ideal preparation for their A level Physics examinations. Mr Derek Ward Head of Science Department J u l y

Upper Fourth Italian Cookery Class The Upper Fourth students of Italian attended an "Italian Pizza master class" at La Cucina Caldesi. The group has learnt about food, Italian cuisine and eating habits as part of their syllabus so this was an excellent educational, as well as rewarding, experience to conclude the current academic year. The girls were taught about the origins of this dish and were shown how to prepare a delicious pizza, all in Italian. They then had a go themselves at making their own pizzas using genuine Italian ingredients only. Mr Nic Gridelli Head of Modern Foreign Languages Department
