Royal hoax radio station not criticised The Australian radio company behind a hoax royal phone call has donated a six-figure sum to the family of nurse Jacintha Saldanha, the day after two-day inquest into her death concluded. Southern Cross Austereo made the donation of £289,000 to a trust fund for the benefit of Ms Saldanha’s family following an inquest at Westminster Coroner’s Court last week, which recorded a suicide verdict after the nurse – who initially answered the fake call – was found hanged three days after the prank was broadcast. Mrs Saldanha was a nurse at the King Edward VII Hospital, in Beaumont Street, Marylebone, where the Duchess of Cambridge was being treated for morning sickness during her first pregnancy. She put the prank call through to a colleague, who cannot be named for legal reasons, who disclosed the details to the radio DJs. The nurse told the inquest that Mrs Saldanha emailed her after the prank, saying she was “terribly sorry”, and added: “It’s all my fault. I feel very bad about this to get you involved. If there was anything I could do to mend this I would do it.” Westminster coroner Dr Fiona Wilcox said there was evidence the hoax had been “pressing on the mind” of the nurse before she killed herself, along with her difficult relationship with a junior colleague who had made a complaint of bullying and harassment against her, which had recently been dismissed. Andrew Robertson, chief executive at the hospital, described her as a “first class nurse”. He added: “The coroner has thoroughly investigated what happened and the evidence has shown that King Edward VII’s Hospital did everything it reasonably could to support Jacintha following the hoax call.”

Headteacher is country’s best It was third time lucky for a Regent’s Park headmistress after she was named the best in the country by society bible Tatler. Vivienne Durham, who has led Francis Holland School, Regent’s Park, for the past decade, took home the sought-after prize at the 11th Annual Tatler Schools Awards ceremony on Thursday. She was nominated for the award last year, and shortlisted for “best headmistress of a public school” in 2007. Accepting the award, Mrs Durham said: “I’m extremely grateful

and astonished to receive this award which I accept on behalf of the supremely dedicated and hugely talented staff at Francis Holland School, Regent’s Park.” The Hampstead resident continued by saying that the staff “inspire the pupils every day and also inspire me every day”. Marie Winckler, chairman of governors for Francis Holland Schools Trust, said the recognition of Mrs Durham’s and the school’s achievements, confirmed its “formidable reputation for excellence and enjoyment”.

‘Energetic leadership’ It praised interim headteacher Virginia Fraher for her “strong and energetic leadership” which has given St Edward’s “a sense of direction and purpose”. Her “strong focus” on raising teaching standards has paid off, and inspectors noted: “They [teachers] have risen to this chal-

A school which was rated inadequate a year ago has been praised for making improvements – but inspectors are still griping about the standard of children’s handwriting. An inspection in May last year found St Edward’s RC Primary School, in Lisson Grove, had dropped from being classed “good” to “inadequate”, saying overall children were not making as much progress as expected, and they weren’t being challenged. Teaching, it said, was largely inadequate, while also singling out children’s handwriting as being particularly bad. But the latest interim report into the school, following a visit in July this year, found it is “making reasonable progress towards the removal of the serious weakness designation”.

lenge well and teaching is much improved and some is of high quality in the nursery.” Inspectors also noted progress was much improved, “borne out by the work seen in pupils’ books”. The report reveals a phonic screening check, taken in Year 1, which assesses understanding of letters and sounds, had not only improved on last year, but were now “well above the national average for 2013”, while the school was “on track” for its attainment in the Year 6 national tests. The report also notes the governing body “has been strengthened by the addition of new members”, while a revised committee structure “has increased the level of challenge which it is giving to the school”. However, it did pick out three points still to be improved, including additional challenging work for the most able children. Inspectors also remarked “the quality of handwriting in the school is not as high as it might be”. Violet Richardson, who took over as head this month, said the school had made “phenomenal progress” since May 2013. She added: “I was absolutely delighted with the report. I’ve got a strong team here who are working really hard to pull the school together and move upwards.”
