Francis Holland School Newsletter July 2011 ALEXANDRA ROSE DAY
From the Headmistress Dear Parents, The second half of the summer term has been as lively as ever, despite a four day lull immediately after June half term, during which every student in the school was taking examinations. Sincere thanks to Mrs. Cohen, the School’s Chief Examinations Officer and Mrs. Gurini, who again organised several thousand public examinations with calm efficiency and good humour no mean feat! Sincere thanks to all of you who have attended the many school events during the second half of this term. In particular, girls have been well supported at events such as the Junior Concert, the Lower Fourth Science Fair, the evening of Speech and Drama and the Upper Sixth Leavers’ Prize-Giving Evening. The GCSE and A level Art exhibitions were most enjoyable occasions, as ever. Particular thanks to all members of staff in the Art department. A special extracurricular highlight this term were the excellent Italian plays performed by a professional Italian theatre company, which drew a large audience of pupils, including many from other London schools: thanks to Ms Mazzon, Mr. Gridelli and the MFL department for organising this event.

We wish Mr. Chiverton and the team of FHS teachers and senior pupils involved in FHS Summer Camp 2011, the holiday activity week organised and sponsored for younger children in “looked after care” in liaison with Westminster Social Services, good weather and an excellent week at Sayers Croft, at the end of July. Also during the summer holidays, Miss Baig will lead a residential equestrian trip, accompanied by Mrs. Hillier, involving many of the girls who ride after school with Equestrian Club, every week. In mid-July, Mr. Gridelli will lead an Italian trip to Sorrento, accompanied by Miss Mahieu.
This has been another good year for charitable fund-raising in school, which is led by Miss Farthing and the Help Fund Committee. Many thanks to everyone who has supported initiatives as diverse as UIVM’s “Granny Bingo” to the Head Girl's F R A N C I S

Solar Stills Challenge
UK Junior Mathematics Challenge 2011
To help celebrate the end of summer examination week all the Thirds took part in the Royal Society of Chemistry, Solar Stills Challenge. The challenge consisted of two main tasks. In the first task pupils had to build a still to purify water according to a method given. The second task involved pupils modifying the still in order to purify as much water as possible. The winning group not only purified an impressive amount of water, but their scientific explanation and diagrams were outstanding. Congratulations to the winners Eleanor Bogle (IIIJ), Amy Rostas (IIIM), Annabel Claassen (IIIS) and Cara Heppell (IIIS).

The Prime Minister greeted the girls in the Cabinet Room in No.10, where he spoke with them about their involvement in the school's charity work for St. Amedeus School, Moshi, Tanzania. Mr. Cameron then made his own contribution to the Alexandra Rose Day Appeal on the steps of Downing Street. Whilst Mr. Cameron began his working day with meetings in preparation for Prime Minister's Question Time, the girls were lucky enough to be given a guided tour, getting a rare glimpse behind the iconic black door of No.10. Grannies all play Bingo, don’t they? And eat cake? So, the Upper Fourths decided that as their Deputy form tutor is a granny, who herself has a granny (aged 107!), they would organise their charity event around grannies favourite activities. On Thursday June 23rd 2011 Granny Bingo took place in the hall. All the Upper Fourths dressed up as Grannies. Aided by Super Grannies (their Sixth Form prefects), they welcomed their peers into the hall to buy cakes, play “sweetie jar “ tambola and participate in games of bingo. First and second round winners competed in the final for prizes. The event raised just shy of £200 for the Samaritans (one of their representatives had recently given a talk to the Upper fourth) and great fun was had by all the participants. THIRDS HISTORY TRIP TO THE MUSEUM OF LONDON On Friday 10th June, at the end of a long, hard week of examinations, the Thirds spent the afternoon at the wonderful Museum of London. They enjoyed visiting the medieval and early modern rooms, experts as they are in the Black Death and the Peasants’ Revolt, and learnt how the Great Fire of 1666 had such a catastrophic effect on London.
Lara and Lulu hard at work!
They then spent an hour looking around the superb new displays on Modern London, and finished off the afternoon with a trip to the shop and café for a well deserved muffin. Whilst visiting the museum, the girls had been working in pairs, searching for ‘eight amazing facts’ which they needed to record and explain. It was a hard fought competition, and there many worthy candidates.
Constance and Zinnia are all smiles!

The final winners will receive iTunes vouchers, and the unique opportunity of setting the Thirds History homework for the last week of term! Well done! Mr. Clayton Head of History and Politics Department

Salters’ Festival Experience On 15th June, Mr. Murphy accompanied Eleanor Bogle, Maddie Dunbar, Cara Heppell and Caitlin Isaacs to the Salters’ Festival of Chemistry at London South Bank University. During the morning session, the girls were given a forensic exercise to complete, which required them to carry out a range of chemical tests on unknown substances found at a crime scene in order to identify which suspect was guilty. They were complimented by the festival organisers on their professional appearance and for the efficient way in which they carried out the tasks. After lunch, they were set a different sort of challenge: to adjust the quantities in a chemical reaction so that it took exactly two minutes for the mixture to become cloudy. They did very well and managed to get within a couple of seconds of the desired time. The girls completed all the activities without any help and we congratulate them on their great performance throughout the event. The day finished with a lecture demonstration with giant bubbles, flames, the spraying of water and an invitation from the lecturer to try the experiments at home with paint instead of water, to create art and, no doubt, a mess! LOWER FOURTH SCIENCE FAIR After five weeks of hard work the grand final of the Lower Fourth Science fair took place after school on Monday 27th June. Each entry was produced by two pupils, they had to answer a scientific question of their choosing. In order to do this they were given a display board and guidance on how to begin, but the direction of their projects was up to them. Three knock-out heats were held and the eight highest scoring projects were judged at the final. Parents and pupils were able to view all of the Lower Fourth projects in the Gloucester room and Chemistry laboratories, prior to the finalists making their presentations and the judging commencing. The eight finalists were quizzed by the judge and then each pairing presented their projects to the hall. Tilly and Imani with Dr. Welch and guest judge Dr. Huntley

The annual Upper Fourth trip to Knapp House was a great success again this year. LOWER SIXTH TUTOR GROUP OUTINGS LVING Trip to Greenwich
LIVSJ Trip to Brighton Pier and Royal Pavilion
Despite a rocky start on the quay waiting for the Thames Clipper, LVING set sail for a day of fun down the Thames, to Greenwich. After a slightly turbulent journey we headed directly to the Greenwich Market, where many of us bought jewellery and clothing, before viewing the prestigious Greenwich University, followed by its spectacular hall- the location for the filming of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean IV.’ The highlight of the day was painting mugs in The Biscuit Café, where we all demonstrated our wide range of artistic abilities! With our masterpieces finished and ready to be fired in the kiln (renowned for reaching 963°c) we had earned ourselves a well deserved lunch in Pizza Express. Finally, we set off up the steep hill to The Greenwich Observatory to explore the educational museum, cross the Time Meridian and view the entire London skyline. Overall the day was a great success and the whole class has a mug to remember our day out! Raffy Elliston, Charlotte Prinsley and Anna Gillespie
Hollie and Da isy by the seaside !
On Friday 10th June, the class of LVISJ boarded a train from London Victoria to Brighton. As this was an end of exams treat we were all looking forward to sunshine, the infamous Brighton pier and the promise of fish and chips on the beach. We arrived to blue skies and warm weather and headed straight to the Brighton Museum to see a number of exhibitions ranging from textiles to the Egyptians. After sheltering from a brief spout of rain under the arches of the beautiful Royal Pavilion we headed to the beach for a seaside lunch with the seagulls. We soon made our way to the pier for bumper cars and the arcade room, both of which were enjoyed by the form and Mr Jenkin. The trip was a perfect end to the weeks of exams and a wonderful beginning to the new year. Lauren Haine (LIVSJ)
LVIRR Trip to Keats House
On Friday 10th June we started our day at 9 am. Miss Le Roux met the form outside Esporta in the O2 centre, dressed in sports gear ready for an active morning. Esporta had a wide range of activities on offer, and some of us braved the very demanding spinning class and body combat class whilst others went for the aqua class. We also had access to the gym and the less sporty of us tried out its facilities, such as the power plates. We met at the café in the centre at noon and, sharing tales of the morning, went to Pizza Express for a very well-deserved lunch. After a pizza each we travelled to Keats House in Hampstead where the poet John Keats lived. Although we arrived drenched due to a thunder storm, we were able to make the most of looking around his house the place where he fell in love with Fanny Brawne, the girl next door. This in turn inspired some of his most famous poetry such as 'Ode to a Nightingale'. We all hugely enjoyed the day, and are very thankful to Miss Le Roux for organising and accompanying us.
LVIAM Trip to Science Museum and IMAX
The incredible story behind the Hubble telescope and the amazing 3D effects made the whole experience unforgettable. The voiceover was done by Leonardo Di Caprio, much to the enjoyment of the Lower Sixth! Plans for boating and picnicking in Hyde Park were unfortunately dashed due to the typical British summer weather. SIXTH FORM BEGIN UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONS
Thea working with her group
On Thursday, June 9th, Francis Holland hosted an Oxbridge Applications workshop for Sixth Formers considering applying to Oxford and Cambridge. This was attended by pupils from other schools as well. The presenters talked about the need for applicants to take responsibility for their own studying, then about how to prepare for admissions tests and interviews. There were then group discussions with subject specialists and individual mock interviews. These will be the first of several interviews that the girls will be having over the coming months.
Imperial, and Nottingham came to give the girls advice on how to write their personal statements, how to choose courses, how to make a success of their applications to university and the next stage of their education. Mrs Oakley, Head of Careers, gave a detailed talk on where to find good quality information in our well stocked Careers Library as well as online about all the courses available. Mr Jenkin gave an introduction to the actual online UCAS application ‘form’. Our Lower Sixth now feel ready to start applying to university, and are finding the challenge ahead less daunting.
On Monday, June 13th, we held our own UCAS Day for all sixty of our Lower Sixth pupils. Speakers from Oxford,

Lower Fourth Geography Trip
On a grey day at the end of exam week, the Geography Department took the Lower Fourth to the Thames Barrier and the Olympic site. We took the river boat from Westminster pier and travelled east to the Thames Flood Barrier past all the famous landmarks. The boats are run by former dock workers who offer an excellent insight into activities and buildings along the banks. On arrival at the Barrier, the girls learnt how it protects London and how it was built. After a rather rainy lunch, we went to look at the Olympic site to see the main stadium and the building work currently underway. The girls studied how the Olympics will be sustainable in the future. Everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable day. Many thanks to Miss Sainty for co-ordinating the day. Ms Hack Head of Geography

Summer Term Sports Report What a year! Francis Holland just keeps on getting better and better on the sporting pitch and I would like to thank all parents for their unwavering support and encouragement. From Interform Hockey to Interform Swimming, the three terms of 2010/11 have never been dull. Scattered in between the terms have been the many Middlesex Netball tournaments, our annual Bollywood and African Dance Workshop, the Middlesex Gymnastics Competition the Interform Netball tournament, our spectacular Gym and Dance Display, fixtures every Tuesday and Thursday, Sports Week, Wimbledon for the Tennis and with Sports Day still to come! Please do encourage your daughters to join a sports team next year!! Certainly a highlight in the last academic year was our superb Sports Tour to South Africa. A more perfect sports tour I could not hope for. It was our biggest and best sports tour to date and will certainly be hard to match – but I am hopeful our next Netball and Hockey Sports Tour in October 2012 will have something to say about that! Our mystery destination will be a surprise to some, but you will all have to be patient until September when the location is announced. If you would like to be a part of the next sports tour or just to try out for any of our competitive squads – make sure
you try out for a team!! Sign up sheets for next year’s sports teams will be up on the PE noticeboards at the start of the Autumn term. Girls must bring kit into school on the first day to be prepared early. They should take a note of the times and dates for trials in their diaries. Sports trials dates are also available to view on the school website – please do click and view. If you have not had a chance to have a look at our new PE kit, please do go online to www. schoolblazer.com or have a look at the design on our website via the ‘Admissions’ link. The new look design is sharp and snappy and easy to order through the Schoolblazer website. Remember that the new PE kit will have a two year phase in for existing parents, so please do not feel that you have to rush out and buy the new kit. Our new Thirds will be wearing the new kit as compulsory. Please do not mix old and new PE kit – we cannot have any red and maroon clashes! Schoolblazer are also offering a free postage and packaging service if orders are placed between 4th July and 18th July. Have a wonderful Summer break, and I hope to see everyone (parents included) raring to go in the autumn term. Miss Tucker Head of PE Department
Game, Set and Matches? A fun afternoon was had by all colleagues at the annual Staff BBQ and Tennis tournament in the Regent’s Park this term. More aptly described as a hit and giggle, the event was showered with laughter, not rain and was enjoyed by all. Many thanks to the kitchen staff for providing a feast of a BBQ and the Regent’s Park Tennis Centre for having us. Well done also to the dynamic Aussie duo, who managed to fend off the rather feeble challenges from the England representatives.
