Francis Holland School Newsletter June 2011 CHARITY SKYDIVE IN AID OF ST. AMEDEUS

From the Headmistress Dear Parents, Sincere thanks to the many of you who returned the parental questionnaire, which was sent in April. Your comments are much appreciated and will inform our strategic planning during the next eighteen months. A more detailed letter about our actions in response to the questionnaire is included with this newsletter and can also be found on the parents’ log-in area of the school website: www.fhs-nw1.org.uk

Miss O’Toole and Miss Gallagher accompany the intrepid sixth formers who led a charitable skydive to raise money for the further development of our sponsor school St. Amedeus, in Tanzania. The total amount raised was in excess of £4000. Many thanks to all those who enabled us to achieve this sponsorship total.

Comments about the success of last year’s first-ever Prize-giving in the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the South Bank were among the many positive responses to the questionnaire. Accordingly, this year’s Prize-giving at the QEH will be held on Thursday 22nd September at 6:30pm, and invitations will be sent to all FHS parents. The GCSE and A level season has begun and we wish girls every success in their public examinations this term. School examinations for Thirds to Lower Fifth will take place in the week after half term, starting on Monday 6th June. It seems hardly possible that the Thirds, whose first day at FHS coincided with my own in September 2004, are now “polished corners”, with university places, about to begin adult life. I would like to thank the Upper Sixth Head Girl’s Team for all they have contributed to the school since they were elected last June. This year’s Head Girl, Katherine Arnot, has been supported by a superb Head F R A N C I S

in Regent’s Park on Tuesday 5th July. We look forward to seeing you at these and many other events, detailed online and in the termly calendar.

It was good to meet many of you at the memorable Summer Concert in St. Cyprian’s last week. Sincere thanks to all members of the Parents’ Association Committee and to the many parents who contributed to the success of the Salsa Evening. The Parents’ Prayer Group will meet at 8.30am in the Gloucester Room on Tuesday 28th June: all FHS parents will be warmly welcome. Please contact Mrs. Forde, Deputy Head Pastoral, should you have any queries about this: felicity.forde@fhs-nw1.org.uk

Miss Jeannine Addinall has been Deputy Head at FHS since 1983. She is stepping down from this role at the end of term, but will remain a full-time member of the teaching staff until she retires in July 2012. Her successor in September as Deputy Head, Ms Amanda Triccas, is currently an Assistant Head at St. Paul’s Girls’ School. Words are insufficient to record the debt that I and the school owe to Miss Addinall, but the long and spontaneous standing ovation that she and her husband received at the Salsa Evening was an indication of the deep affection with which Miss Addinall is regarded by all who know her.

Highlights of the second half of the summer term will include the A level Art Exhibition from 5:30-7pm on Thursday June 16th; the Lower Fourth Science Fair at 5:30pm on Monday 27th June and the Junior Concert in St. Cyprian’s Church at 6:30pm on July 4th. Sports Day will begin at midday ·

Inter-form Debating Final 2011 The annual Inter-form Debating Competition took place last term, and the standard of this year’s debates was higher than ever. The competition was open to girls from the Lower Fifth to Upper Sixth and teams fiercely debated motions as wide ranging as ‘this house supports military intervention to protect human rights’ to ‘this house believes that university students should fund their entire university education’. It was great to see so many supporters come along to hear the weekly debates. The final was held in front of the whole school on the last day of term. Congratulations to Natalia Riley and Emma Kutner, who are this year’s winners. They spoke convincingly for the proposition arguing that ‘this house believes that celebrity culture has replaced religion’. Each year the winners of this long standing tradition win a stunning silver spoon which was kindly donated by Olivia Mann, Head Girl between1976 and 1977. We were also privileged to have Leah Sidi return to Francis Holland to judge the debate. Along with her partner, Leah won the Inter-form Debating Competition two years ago, and is currently studying English Literature at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. Leah gave invaluable feedback to all the debaters, and we were delighted to welcome back a Polished Corner to judge the debate. Congratulations to all girls involved in the competition!

National Science and Engineering Week The school marked National Science and Engineering Week in March with a number of events. School assemblies highlighted the work undertaken by contemporary scientists and considered the role of women in science. Dr. Welch’s presentation was about the type of work that scientists undertake. She explained the wide range of their activities and of the skills required, along with the diversity of their fields of work. Mr. Ward brought us up to date with some developments in medical physics, explaining the principles of MRI scans and how nanotechnology can be used to deliver drugs. Mrs. Wright chose some examples of women scientists from the past and explained how many of them did not receive full credit for their work, with their male colleagues receiving accolades and Nobel Prizes instead, as the female contribution was shamelessly ignored by the largely male scientific establishment.

Alice Haine and Sadee Brown (IIIS) finding the energy content of a biscuit

Many girls took part in science quizzes and competitions during the week, and the winners of these were Darcey McAlister-Wober of the Thirds, Tilly Holt of the Lower Fourth, Alisha Mukherjee of the Upper Fourth and Bella Barkett of the Thirds. Women have an increasingly prominent role in modern science, and studying science at a higher level is an excellent preparation for many careers. We hope that awareness of the rich variety of science, of the opportunities that it presents and the benefits it can bring to the world will continue to increase. Mr. F. Murphy Head of Science Department

GCSE Geography Trip to Cumbria April 2011 Once again, in the beautiful sun of April, the Geography Department took 36 members of the Lower Fifth to Castle Head Field Study Centre in the Lake District to undertake fieldwork for their IGCSE Alternative to Coursework paper. An enjoyable time was had by all members of the group, spending time in the River Eea, measuring the changes in channel variables, then along to the coast to measure beach profiles and the vegetation on a salt marsh. Our second day was spent investigating the impact of tourism on a rural settlement, before we walked up Orist Head to see the stunning view of Lake Windermere. The girls ended the day with an hour's sight-seeing in Bowness-on-Windermere. My thanks go to Miss Sainty and Mrs. Hillier for giving of their time to accompany the trip. Ms. S. Summer Concert 2011 in St. Cyprian's This year’s Summer Concert was held in St. Cyprians on the 11th of May. With Easter being so late, rehearsal time was very limited. However, as usual, our FHS girlies produced astonishing and accomplished performances in many different genres. We heard music performed by four choirs, two orchestras, a close harmony sixth form group, two jazz bands and some outstanding solo work from Emma Roberts, Claudia Selby and Stella Papadopoulos. Charlotte Amherst has led both the Symphony and String orchestras for the last four years, and her swan song performance of Vaughan Williams’ technically demanding Lark Ascendin, will remain in our musical memory for many years.

Much to everybody’s, delight, the Upper Sixth leavers [Charlotte, Claudia, Stella, Gabby, Catherine and Kim] gave a brilliant rendition of Rafferty’s Baker Street. These girls, have contributed greatly to both orchestral and choral music throughout their years at FHS, and their ability and enthusiasm will be greatly missed. The evening ended with a rollicking rendition of Pirates of the Caribbean with a few extra pirates on board! Mrs. L. Rolfe Johnson Head of Music Pink Ladies Jazz group

On the 12th of April 2011, 21 girls and their teachers ventured out to Morocco. Everyone was overwhelmed with excitement and already we were attacked by heat. We climbed a mountain whilst in Lmlil using all the strength we had, and made it all the way to the top despite what we expected, as we hadn’t thought we would make it. The views from the top were unbelievable Easter 2011: and there were even mountain goats to observe as they went about their everyday lives.

In Ouarzazate we went to Ait Ben Haddou, a film site where scenes from ‘Gladiator,’ ‘Prince of Persia’ and many more films were made. It is still a working and living town, and we climbed to the heights of it, as it is on a hill. Then we travelled to Zagora and went to Hammam before visiting a silversmith and a pottery, where we bought presents. Also we visited a village called Tinfou, where the desert was

Parents' Association News

An evening in honour of Vic Sheriffs held on 6th April 2011

It gives me very great pleasure to announce that the Spring Salsa on 5th May was a huge success, as I know all those present will confirm. The evening kicked off with a ‘cool’ cocktail straight from the bar of the Copacabana Hotel in Rio de Janeiro – the jugs of Caipirinha seemed to disappear all too quickly, with many a table becoming far too possessive and unwilling to let go!! The room was electric with the beat of the lively ‘Riamba’ band and its excellent singer; a number of very eager (and extremely able) salsa recruits stepped out onto the dance floor. Our instructress (aka the singer) was an easy teacher to follow, and those who bravely ventured onto the dance floor showed amazing prowess, with a fair number of teachers demonstrating their skills!! The FHS chef and his team produced a mouth-watering 3-course meal followed by coffee and chocolates. We were, as always, ever grateful to the Lower Fifth volunteers, who showed remarkable expertise as waitresses and sellers of raffle tickets, which brings me on to one of the main reasons for holding such an event – to raise valuable funds for the St Amedeus School in Moshi, Tanzania and the FHS Summer Camp for underprivileged children from Westminster. I am proud to announce that the net total raised that evening was in excess of £2000 – many thanks to all who supported the evening, and we hope that those unable to attend will join us next year – who knows what the Hall will be turned into in 2012… watch this space!!

On a beautifully sunny April evening, the family and friends of Vic Sheriffs, our much loved former school caretaker, gathered in the Gloucester room to celebrate his life and to honour him by unveiling a plaque in his memory. This was duly carried out by his wife, Eileen, and it may be seen there, in pride of place, at any time. To quote the words of the plaque: “it was through Vic that the school became aware the Gloucester Arms Public House was to be sold. It is with our heartfelt thanks and appreciation that we commemorate Vic’s service to the school.”

LECTURE BY PROFESSOR VERNON BOGDANOR On Monday 9th May we were honoured to welcome Professor Vernon Bogdanor to school to address the History and Politics Society. More commonly known for being David Cameron’s politics tutor at university, Professor Bogdanor is Britain’s foremost constitutional expert, and he has written extensively on political and constitutional issues. An Emeritus Fellow of Brasenose College, Oxford, and currently a Research Professor at the Institute for Contemporary History at King’s College, London, Professor Bogdanor also holds the title of Professor of Government and Politics at the University of Oxford. In 1998 he was awarded the CBE for his contributions to constitutional history. In an enthralling talk, Professor Bogdanor addressed a number of key issues relating to the coalition government’s first year in office, the potential for future constitutional reform and the recent referendum on the UK’s electoral system. Clear, witty and deeply interesting, Professor Bogdanor succeeded in captivating his Sixth Form audience, and was also kind enough to take many questions on topics such as the future of the United Kingdom and the Liberal Democrat – Conservative coalition. We are very grateful that such an eminent academic was able to visit us, and hope to be able to welcome Professor Bogdanor back to Francis Holland at some point in the future. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Over the first May Bank Holiday weekend eleven Lower Fifth girls set off for Chelmsford to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Silver award practice expedition. The three day expedition was a great opportunity for the girls to revisit the skills learnt in their Bronze award while dusting off their boots for a 50km walk. Over the weekend the sun was shining, and the horizon filled with vibrant shades of green and yellow as the grass blew in the wind, and the rapeseed flowers were in full bloom. The weekend was a great success, and we wish the girls the best of luck for the assessment expedition in the Chilterns over the next May long weekend. A staggering 53 girls have embarked upon the Bronze

award this year. This has been a fantastic response and I am sure they are all going to enjoy the new challenges ahead. Congratulations to the following girls who have achieved their Duke of Edinburgh Awards: Bronze: Amber Rutterford Silver: Kate Emlyn Jones and Zoe Silkstone Gold: Isabelle Foss Isabelle will receive her gold award at St. James's Palace in the near future. NEW SPORTS KIT LAUNCHING SEPTEMBER 2011 Along with the sunny weather, our new PE kit has arrived! It was launched in assembly at the beginning of the month. Parents and students are also able to view online our new PE design. The Schoolblazer (our distributor) website will go live at the end of June and parents will be able to make any necessary purchases then. The new PE kit will have a two year phase in, so there is no need to rush out and buy the new kit for existing parents. However the new Thirds for September 2011 will all be wearing our new and vibrant PE kit as compulsory. There is a link from our own website to Schoolblazer via the ‘Admissions’ section on the home page for ease of reference or you can just go directly to the site at www.schoolblazer.com. The new Kit looks great, but please be reminded that a mixture of old and new PE kit will not be allowed, other than the new aertex and skort with the old tracksuit – please no other red and maroon mixes! Easter bash with our friends from The Jack Taylor School

On Thursday 31st March the Lower Fifths organised an Easter party for the Jack Taylor School, who provide a quality and exclusive education for pupils with severe learning difficulties. Everyone had a fantastic time. The following day they organised a talent show for the same cause, it was a huge success and they managed to raise £600. Various age-groups took part but the winners were the Lower fifths with a rendition of ‘Friday’ by Justin Beiber. The money raised will be used to buy an X-Box the use of which assists in exercising both sides of the brain and therefore will make a huge difference in the lives of these youngsters with profound and multiple needs. FHS Sports Report Short and sweet, this summer term is action packed and turbo boosted! Fixtures are well underway and there has already been a fair mix of wins and losses for all of the rounders and tennis teams. Comprehensive fixture lists are available for all students in the PE pigeon holes outside of the staffroom. The school website also has the most current fixtures list for parents to peruse and make plans to come out to see their daughter’s team play. Girls should be reminded to bring along sunscreen, hat and bottled water, as being sun smart is extremely important! Rounders Club is on Friday lunchtime for all ages – if your daughter missed out on the team this year, forgot the trials or just wants to have some fun, please encourage her come along! Don’t forget Fitness Club on Friday mornings, free swim on Monday lunchtimes, or look at the extra curricular calendar for other clubs that might catch your interest. Girls should also look on the short and long term events notice board for new and exciting events wider to the school community. Sports Day is fast looming, to which parents are welcome, on Tuesday, 5th July 2011 from 12 noon on Marylebone Green in The Regent’s Park. It is a great afternoon and a great time to see your daughters in action! We also have our Interform Swimming Gala going forward this July.

New this year; our Lower Fifth GCSE PE students will be running a week of fun competitions in conjunction with National Sports week at the end of June. Planned events are a Benchball tournament for the Thirds, a Gymnastics meet for the Thirds to Lower Fourth, a mini Tennis tournament, a Dance competition and a mini Rounders competition. The GCSE PE students will run the events and be assessed on their preparation, planning and delivery of the competitions as part of their overall grade. Sounds like fun! Inter-form Netball Tournament 2011 With the tournament being washed out last year, the anticipation and excitement within the school was high for the 2011 Interform Netball Tournament. Forms had prepared their teams and training had taken place in lessons. On Tuesday 5th April it was time for the school to shine. The tournament started at 1.30pm with each form from the Thirds to the Upper Fourths submitting two teams to play in matches, and the Lower Fifth and Upper Fifth had just one team each. Players were cheered on by an eager crowd, each of them hoping it would be their form whose name would be engraved onto the winning trophy. At the end of the form matches the annual Staff vs Sixth Form match took place. The staff thought the sixth form were going to be victorious this year, with a talented team taking to the court. But all those months of hard work and training paid off as the staff smashed the sixth form team six goals to two.

The results for the rest of the tournament were as follows; IIIrds 3rd Place = IIIM 2nd Place = IIIJ 1st Place = IIIS LIV 3rd = LIVS 2nd = LIVJ 1st = LIVM UIV 3rd = UIVM 2nd = UIVS 1st = UIVJ LV 3rd = LVB 2nd = LVH 1st = LVN UV 3rd = UVC 2nd = UVB 1st = UVL

Well done to all the girls for a fantastic tournament. As always, many thanks to Mrs. Drummond, Miss Mahieu, Miss Tucker and Miss Gallagher for umpiring and keeping the day running so smoothly.
