Fhs newsletter feb 2010

Francis Holland School Newsletter February 2010 FHS under snow! However, school remained open for all but one day, during the prolonged adverse weather conditions - a testament to the commitment of staff, pupils and parents!

From the Headmistress Dear Parents, After a blast of Siberian weather at the beginning of January, term quickly gained momentum: hundreds of girls came to sit the 11+ entrance exam and the Upper Fifth returned to lessons after their GCSE mock examinations. As ever there are many activities happening beyond lessons this term, in addition to FHS’ wide range of extra-curricular clubs and societies, such as rehearsals for the Harrow concert, the Tennyson Poetry Prize, the inter-form debating competition, the inter-form drama performances and the inter-form netball tournament.

2010: Amy Collins, who took A levels last summer, has a place to read Classics at Somerville College, Violet Farkas has an offer from Lady Margaret Hall to read Chemistry and Charlotte Clark has an offer from St Catherine’s College to read English. As you may have read in the press, Mrs Gillian Low, who was Headmistress here from 1998-2004, has been elected President of GSA (the Girls’ Schools Association) for 2010. We congratulate Mrs Low on this achievement, not least because she has already taken full advantage of her national role to highlight serious concerns regarding the ISI inspection system introduced in September, which focuses on independent schools’ data and regulatory compliance rather than teaching and learning.

Many congratulations to seven members of the Upper Sixth who have completed and submitted an “extended project” in addition to three or four A levels: Athina Bluff; Jessica Fletcher; Alexandra Gillum; Tiggi Kempe; Melica Khansari; Eleanor Sloane and Alexandra Thompson. Extended project subjects chosen by these girls included the use of nanotechnology in tennis racquets, an investigation into night-time photography and the heroine and anti-heroine in Middlemarch. The Upper Sixth are also to be congratulated on securing offers from their chosen universities during a year in which UCAS applications have been very high. Particular congratulations to those who have been offered places at Oxford University in October

thanks to Mrs. Bachle-Morris and all members of the English Department for their organisation of the Drama Competition. Within a week of the devastating earthquake which struck Haiti, the Head Girl’s team had organised one of the most successful breaktime cake sales ever at FHS and thanks to the baking and generous contributions of so many pupils, parents and staff, a large cheque has been sent to the appeal fund. Our annual choral concert with Harrow School will be held on Tuesday 23rd March. The choir will perform Bach’s B Minor Mass. Please contact Mrs. Rolfe Johnson, via the Music Department, if you would like tickets for this performance. James Bond will be the theme of the Parents’ Association supper quiz on Thursday 25th March 2010, an evening which looks set to be just as enjoyable as last year’s social event. Invitations and full details will be sent to all parents after half term – hope to see you there!

Staff News At the beginning of this term, we welcomed Mrs. Sue Gurini to the newly created post of Assistant Examinations Officer and Database Administrator. Mrs. Gurini had previously worked for many years at William Ellis School in a similar administrative role. Mrs. Gurini will work closely with both the Director of Studies, Miss Green, and with Mrs. Cohen, the school’s indefatigable Chief Examinations Officer.

Mrs. Gurini

Many congratulations to Mr. Peters (Physics Department) and his wife Nicole, whose first baby, named Skye, arrived in early January, when London was deep in snow!

Christmas Music We started the Christmas music journey with our annual concert of Christmas music and readings at the Lansdowne Club. The Senior Chamber Choir looked and sounded superb; they were real ambassadors for FHS. There were some eloquent readings of Christmas poems by Julia Kass, Chloe McLain, Zoe Silkstone and Katherine Arnot and some beautiful solo singing from Rosie Wright, Isabelle Pratt, Charlotte Prinsley, Rebecca Lumley and Blair Paskin. There were also saxophone and flute solos from Claudia Selby and Tali Price and a beautiful Mendelssohn duet from Sarah Hill and Natasha Kleeman. The UV Close Harmony Group, led by Thea Waxman and Rebecca Lumley, gave a clever and entertaining rendition of “White Christmas” and there was a standing ovation for Stella Papadopoulos and Charlotte Amherst’s rendition of Bach’s Double Violin Concerto. We have raised over £2000.00 for their charity – The Richard House Children’s Hospice.

Soloist: Rebecca Lumley (UVH)

At the beginning of December, I received a Christmas card from an old FHS family now living in Santa Fe, and on it they had written “We always think of the FHS Hodie procession at this time of year and it brings tears to our eyes”. Well, true to form, the carol services started with the Britten candlelit “Hodie” for what was the final time for members of the Upper Sixth. It is always at this point of the year that one starts to hear “Oh but it’s our last…….” especially when I try to omit some of the favourites! But it’s hard to better choruses from Handel’s “Messiah” or movements from Britten’s “Ceremony of Carols”. Not many junior choirs have a new carol specially written for them [Mr Thorne] and the Junior Chamber Choir produced rich clear part singing for Somervell’s “The Grasmere Carol”. We were also treated to some beautiful vocal solos including Charlotte Clark’s rendition of “Once in Royal”. In addition, the string orchestra performed the “Air” from Grieg’s “Holberg Suite” with richness and panache and Charlotte Amherst gave an exquisite reading of Bach’s “Sarabande” for unaccompanied violin. As usual, the service ended with organ and congregation swelling to the sound of “O Come All Ye Faithful” with even the altos finding that they had top Gs for the descant! Over £600.00 was raised and was shared between the FHS Summer Camp and the Musicians’ Benevolent Fund. – Thank you! We ended the term with our annual visit to the Butterworth Centre, where its wonderful staff care for patients with dementia and mental illness. Christmas carols are often in their long term memory and we find that many of the residents can join in with the carols. The girls always bring great joy to the residents and carers, and we are always treated to a delicious tea! Mrs. Rolfe Johnson Head of Music Department

Climbing Wall Trip for the Thirds with the Physics Department

As part of the ‘Forces in Sport’ topic studied by the Thirds this term, 36 pupils accompanied by Mr. Ward (Head of Physics), Mr. Davis (Head of Science) and Mrs Fee (student teacher) went to the climbing wall at Swiss Cottage on two evenings in January. Forces and material science theory was put to practice and tested in a real life scenario. The top parts of the walls are actually outside the main building and despite the cold conditions, most girls were able to climb to the top of walls varying in height from 10 – 20m. It is hoped that further trips will take place next term to enhance the topics of Astronomy and Renewable Energy. Mr. Ward Head of Physics Department

The Merchant of Venice Arrest of Antonio

Money talks, and in Francis Holland's fantastic, hugely enjoyable production of The Merchant of Venice it screams very loudly. In wonderful, funny, moving performances by Charlotte Clark as Antonio, Rafaela Elliston as Bassanio, Rachel Barker as Shylock and Isabella Bornholt as Portia, all the main characters are on the make, busy doing deals and getting and spending and trading – even trying to trade in a pound of flesh. That is the gruesome deal made when Bassanio needs money to woo rich, beautiful Portia; his friend Antonio, who is in love with him, signs a bond with Shylock the Jewish moneylender to borrow the money, against the security of his ships which are expected to return to Venice laden with expensive goods. If they don't, Shylock can hack a pound of Antonio's flesh from any part of his body he chooses.... Every twist and turn of the plot was so exciting that we were all on the edge of our seats wanting to know what would happen next. Our sympathies moved all over the place – sometimes with Antonio, as he risked dying; sometimes with Shylock, when he is being bullied about his religion and especially when his daughter betrays him;

The Prince of Morocco opens the golden casket

sometimes with Portia when Bassanio gives up her ring. But at the same time you really react against Shylock's massive hatreds, and laugh at Bassanio as a sort of upper class twit. The production brought to life the city of Venice amazingly, with gorgeous costumes; Shylock's long Jewish beard and the kippahs worn by him and Tubal made the production even more realistic to us as an audience, as did wonderful make-up (Antonio's stubble actually looked true to life), and shimmering settings – Dior netting and screwed up newspaper balls! - and fabulous live music. However, in contrast to that Shakespearean Venice, all the problems in the plot seemed so modern in dealing with racism, religious prejudice, sexism and greed. The programme was also beautiful: I nearly did a double take when I realised the cover was both Shylock’s face and a reflection of Venice as well as suggesting the storminess of the play. The last scene was almost unbearably sad, after all the other characters had exited and Antonio was alone with everyone else in happy pairs. The play was so brilliantly produced and acted that no one wanted the evening to end.

Financial Mathematics Day On the 13th November 2009, a Financial Mathematics Day was held at Morgan Stanley in the new office block at Canary Wharf. It was led by Bill Dalton, a very interesting lecturer. When we arrived we were led into an extremely impressive room with a huge round table and many microphones and cameras, and a huge white screen. Later we were told that these were for when they held conferences with branches abroad. Everyone was really welcoming, and even though we, the students, at first felt a little uncomfortable, the atmosphere soon warmed up as the first lecture began. The first lecture explained the meaning of Financial Mathematics, and after briefly going over compound and normal interest rates, they showed us how these are used in finance. During this lecture we were also introduced to the concept of bonds, how these were priced, and arbitrage. The second lecture was entitled “Financial Instruments and their uses.” It explained call and put options, speculation, hedging, ideas of spreads and straddles, and a very strange sounding but interesting Black-Scholes Formula.

Each lecture was followed by a “problem solving session” during which we were split into groups of about four or five people, mixing with different schools, thus making lots of new friends while having fun trying to figure out answers to these questions, which seemed impossible to all of us.

Career Guidance for the Upper Fifth We are offering each girl in the Upper Fifth a one-to-one interview to discuss her career aspirations and 'A' level choices with Mrs. Forbes, Miss Dickens, Miss Green or Mrs. Oakley. These interviews will take place at lunch times and after school between January 25th and February 12th, the deadline for 'A' level choices to be given to Miss Addinall (Deputy Head). One of the issues we will also be discussing is Work Experience plans for the summer term, after GCSEs. Mrs. Oakley would love to hear from any parent in any career field who would be prepared to take one of our Upper Fifths for a week's experience or shadowing.

Please look out for the invitation that will be with you soon and put the date of Thursday, 25 March, 2010 in your diaries. There is limited space available so tickets will be on a first come, first served basis – at the fantastic value of £25 per person, which includes a drink on arrival, the meal and entertainment!

If you think you can help, or would like to come in to give a talk about the work you do on a Friday afternoon, please contact Mrs. Oakley via the school office or e-mail kate.oakley@fhs-nw1.org.uk. Your help is very much appreciated.

Carol Singing at St. Thomas’ Hospital

Natasha Holmes, Thea Waxman, Dr Nelson-Piercy, Miss Hack, Rebecca Lumley, Bridget Williams, Staff nurse Joanne Clancy

On Thursday 17th December a few girls from Barbershop, accompanied by Miss Hack, went to sing Christmas carols at the stroke ward in St Thomas’ hospital. Although many of the patients were not able to applaud they showed their appreciation in other ways and I hope we brightened up the day of the hard working nurses, and physiotherapists and the patients themselves. As well as having a huge amount of fun singing, we also had the chance to meet and speak to the patients who

seemed grateful for the company as well as the carols. All the FHS girls enjoyed the experience and we are very grateful to Miss Hack for accompanying us and to the hospital staff for all their help. Rebecca Lumley UVH

GOAT FOR IT! In 2008, the Globetrotters ran a cake sale in order to raise money for the David Sheldrick Trust, an African charity that fosters orphaned elephants. The proceeds enabled us to adopt an elephant and rhinoceros for three years! To continue with our charity work the Autumn term was used to promote the use of goats in the development process. Goats are a vital source of income for the poorest communities in Africa. A goat produces milk for families to drink, and provides income when sold. In Burundi, 'goat banks' provide farmers with an opportunity to invest in the future of their community. A group of farmers is given three goats, two female and one male. Each member of the goat bank agrees to provide food and shelter for their animal, and that they will pass on one of the kids from the first 'next generation' to the next member Girls in the Globetrotters Club raise of the group. This revolving fund ensures that a whole money for farmers in Burundi community benefits from one goat. After hand-making Goat moneyboxes, we decided to raise enough money to ‘gift’ a herd of goats to Burundi at Christmas. After raising £90 through a collection we managed to sponsor nine goats, a great achievement for all involved. Well done! Miss Sainty Geography Department

FHS Sports Report If you thought life could not get any more hectic – do not read on!!! This Spring term has started off with a bang in the form of the Middlesex Gymnastics Competition at Lady Eleanor Holles School in Hampton. FHS has put forward two teams into the event (one junior and one senior) in an attempt to show off our school’s best Gymnasts. We quickly move forward to the Dance workshop for the IIIs and LIVs during lessons. Girls will study cultural dance from Africa and India in the hour long session. The term’s focus quickly then turns to the British Schoolgirls Races, a slalom and giant slalom ski competition. Olivia Willis, Ciara Bodicoat and Anastasia Catsiapis will be pitted against the top schoolgirl Skiiers in the UK. And that is just January… The second half of the term sees our fixtures season come back into full stride. Our School Gym and Dance Display moves forward to the 5th March and the u12 & u13 Middlesex Netball Tournament goes ahead on the 23rd March. Our final event of the term climaxes with the Interform Netball Tournament in Regent’s Park on Tuesday 30th March. With so many events to choose from, I encourage all parents to come out and join in the fun! With so much to look forward to, it is easy to forget the great Autumn term that we have already experienced. The Intermediate and Senior Middlesex Netball tournaments were held in November, which provided a fine challenge for all of our teams. The u13 Netball team showed great promise when they attended the first ever u13 Highgate Netball tournament. Our next sports tour was confirmed

also in November, thirty-five girls will be battling against many South African Schools during the October half term. Training has started and has already become as intense as our opposition will be next Autumn! The term was finished beautifully with our (now annual) Interform Hockey tournament. It really was our best ever tournament and most girls from all year groups took part, which was fantastic to see. The results are shown below, along with the Best and Fairest performer for each age group. FHS PARENTS' PRAYER GROUP

Sixth Form Academic and Music Scholarships: 2010-2012

A group of FHS parents meets informally twice a term to pray for the life of the school and its community. We welcome parents from all Christian denominations so do come along and join us if you are able - or make contact if you would like to be included in our mailing but are unable to meet with us during the school day. You can email us on fhsprayergroup@hotmail.co.uk or ask at the school office for contact details.

Many congratulations to those in the Upper Fifth who have achieved awards for the Sixth Form in 2010-2012. More than thirty girls sat the Academic Scholarship Examination in November; the standard was extremely high and the scholarship has been awarded to Thea Waxman. In addition, four academic exhibitions were awarded for 2010 -2012 to: Samar Ahmed; Lucy Collins; Emma Kutner and Natalia Riley. The standard in auditions at the end of last term for the Sixth Form Music Scholarship was also impressive. Congratulations to Misa Saka who has been awarded the Sixth Form Music Scholarship for 2010-2012. Music Exhibitions have been awarded to Rebecca Lumley and Tali Price.

We meet in school from 8:3010am. The dates for this term are Wednesday 20th January and Wednesday 10th March. Coffee and biscuits provided.

WHERE IN THE WORLD? In the Autumn term the Geography Department ran a competition to test how well we recognise places in our world. ‘Where in the World?’ asked girls to look at a different photograph each week and identify the location. Examples included San Francisco, Nepal and Egypt. If three correct entries were submitted a prize was won, and I am pleased to announce that Isabelle Comber in the Lower Fourth was the deserved recipient of a Selfridges voucher. The competition will be running each term, and I encourage girls of all year groups to enter.
