Francis Holland School Newsletter February 2012 OLYMPIC GYMNASTS VISIT FHS!

From the Headmistress Dear Parents, The school is buzzing with drama as heats are being held every week after school, in preparation for the finals of the inter-form drama competition. Details of the heats can be found in the school online calendar and parents are most welcome to attend these performances. The final heat of the inter-form drama competition will be held on the 134th School Birthday, which will be celebrated on Wednesday February 8th. A “polished corner” actor, Charlotte Powell, will be the adjudicator of the drama competition final. As usual, the spring term began with GCSE mock examinations for the Upper Fifth, which they undertook with impressive commitment. The Higher Education Evening, for all Lower Sixth girls and their parents, is an important event, which will provide detailed information about the UCAS application process and the ways in which the school offers guidance and support for all university applications, including those to Oxford and Cambridge colleges and to universities in America and Europe.

Students will have the opportunity to meet two members of the British Olympic team, Danusia Francis and Laura Mitchell, on 20th February 2012. They will be discussing their expectations and fears for the upcoming Olympics. We are delighted that the girls will be able to meet and be inspired by gymnasts at Olympic level. Many thanks to everyone who supported the Christmas Fair last term, which was seamlessly well organised by the Parents’ Association Committee. The final total raised was £4500 which will provide additional equipment for several departments and also support charitable causes, such as FHS Summer Camp and St Amedeus School in Tanzania. Invitations to the Parents’ Association Supper Quiz 26th April will be sent to you later this term; please keep the evening free if you would enjoy an opportunity to

As you will see from the calendar, there are many concerts this term, but the highlight will be a performance with the Choral Society of Harrow School of The Dream of Gerontius, at Harrow School, on Tuesday 27th March at 7:30pm. Tickets will be available from the FHS school office, nearer the time. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Christmas Music at FHS

The Senior Choir singing carols at St Cyprian's

Christmas in the music department started when members of the Senior Chamber Choir sang at a candle lit wedding of a FHS old girl, in a medieval priory in Wiltshire. She walked in to the Hodie, which she had sung every year at school! It was a fascinating building with excellent acoustics and the girls certainly added to a beautiful service. On Wednesday 7th December the full Senior Chamber Choir went to the Lansdowne Club to perform an evening of carols, Christmas music and readings for their members. The girls looked, sang and read beautifully, and they were real ambassadors for the school. We raised over £500 for their charity, The Richard House Children’s Hospice. Five choirs and the string orchestra were involved in the school Carol Services on the last Wednesday of term. As usual, we started with the candle lit procession of the medieval Hodie and, on the insistence of UVI – [“it’s our last Christmas”] the Senior Choirs sang several movements from Britten’s Ceremony of Carols and recitatives and choruses from Handel’s Messiah. Some wonderful solo items, readings and majestic organ playing from Ollie Lallemant made it a very special service.

The collection from both Carol Services raised nearly £650 for the St Martin’s in the Fields Christmas Appeal, a wonderful amount for a most worthy cause! The following afternoon the Upper Fifth and Sixth Form singers went to the Butterworth Centre in St John’s Wood to sing Christmas music. The girls were wonderful with the patients, and although we were there to give them some Christmas cheer, we also all learnt a great deal from our visit. We intend to do some more for this centre later in the year. The term ended with yet more music in our traditional church service, and it was quite a relief when it became time for the whole school to sing The Twelve Days of Christmas at the end of the final assembly. We have several concerts this term, and, in particular, I would like to draw your attention to our performance of Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius with Harrow School on Tuesday March 27th. If parents would like to sing at this concert, they are most welcome to join us. Mrs Rolfe Johnson Director of Music

Lower Sixth Physics Olympics Competition, University of London

A team of Lower Sixth Physicists, Phillipa Taylor, Tara Oberoi, Talia Brooks, Elizabeth Teplukhin, Roxaneh Afifi-Sabet and Grace Whitehead, competed in the London Regional Final of the Physics Olympics Competition in October.

Nadia assists Professor Hood

The Science Department took the Lower Fourth girls to attend a special preview of the 2011 Royal Institution Christmas Lectures in December. Professor Bruce Hood, of Harvard University, delivered an inspiring talk on neuroscience titled ‘Meet Your Brain’, shown on BBC4 over Christmas. As always, girls from Francis Holland School were fully involved, and four girls, Natalia Ameen, Nadia Muccio, Helena Zecevic and Sophie McMeikan, assisted Professor Hood with his demonstrations!

The task involved the girls planning, designing and building a scaled aerodynamic plane using their AS Physics knowledge of laminar air flow and the Bernoulli effect. Their design was tested on a wind tunnel in the Aeronautical Department of Queen Mary, and performed admirably to achieve fourth place in the London final. Mr Ward Head of Physics Department

The Crucible

Main School Play: December 2011

John Proctor (Katie) and Giles Corey (Rebecca) at trial

The girls denounce the “witches”

There may not be a lot of laughs in The Crucible, barring the odd exchange between John Proctor and Giles Corey, who both share the same sarcastic humour , but the sixty odd girls involved in our production of Miller’s 1953 classic had an unforgettable experience. There are so many memorable moments. For me, the huge crescendo of hatred and lies in the improvised courtroom at the end of Act 3, culminating in a tableau of mean looking girls, was one of the most powerful; perhaps more moving was the prison scene, starting with the whole cast as prisoners quietly singing their suffering from Salem’s jail, soon followed by the heart-stopping reunion between John and Elizabeth Proctor: “the child? ... it grows.” The memory of Rebecca Kent impersonating a walking, singing gate

at the changeover between Acts 1 and 2 always brings an affectionate smile too! I owe a huge debt of gratitude to those lovely parents who helped with the costumes, to colleagues who supported us through rehearsals, and to the girls themselves for simply being fantastic. Well done all of you! A few memories were captured on film by professional photographer and FHS parent, Mrs Rose. UPPER FIFTH CHARITY EVENT FHS on Broadway

Every year the Upper Fifth host a charity event raising money for the Rainbow Centre in Sri Lanka. The Rainbow Centre works to enable children to break free from a cycle of poverty that would otherwise trap them in a world of crime, begging, addiction and abuse. It is a very worthwhile charity, and if you would like more information please visit www. rainbowcentresrilanka.com.

Upper Sixth; Extended project success! Twelve of the Upper Sixth have successfully completed an Extended Project. This is an optional qualification open to all the Sixth Form and is taken in addition to A Levels. It is designed to challenge the most able students and those with a real interest in a topic outside their A Level studies. It is worth half an A2 level grade. Students presented their extended projects to their parents and friends at the end of last term. Congratulations to all the students whose projects are detailed below.

• Katie Menzies: Is the Arab Spring a step towards the end of History?

• Samar Ahmed: How much did sectarian divisions contribute to the defeat of the Spanish Republic?

• Cecilia Schneider: To what extent was the work of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo influenced by their politics and relationship?

• Phoebe Brundle: The influences on our lives today of Caravaggio's Beheading of St John the Baptist. • Anastasia Kinsky: To what extent can the Lebanese conflict of 1975-1999 be defined as a civil war?

• Nicola Michaelides: How did Parisian haute couture influence women's fashion? • Tanya Robertson: To what extent can collective memory be reconjured by film? • Amber Rutterford: Can the Lipstick Effect be proved and, if so, is it true?

• Daisy Startup: Was Julius Caesar a hero or a villain? • Elina Xilas: Can autism be treated?

• Emma Kutner: Why are omissions not a crime in the UK?

Many thanks to all staff especially Miss Green, Director of Studies, who graded and marked these ‘mini PhDs”!

• Rachel Lowe: Are Edward Jenner and Louis Pasteur the fathers of modern medicine?

INTER FAITH WEEK Lower and Upper Fifth visit Regent’s Park Mosque

We put on our tracksuit bottoms and head scarves, preparing ourselves for what would be, for some girls, their first time visiting a Mosque. On our arrival we were led to the main prayer hall, where our eyes were instantly drawn upwards to the magnificent and extremely large chandelier that hung above us. Outside the hall the five prayer times of the day from all over the world were displayed, so that all Muslims could pray together at exactly the same time. It was an amazing beginning to the trip.

Islamic artefacts and a model of the Kabah

We were then shown around the main exhibition and given fundamental information on the Muslim religion. This included an explanation of the Prophet Mohammed (Phud) and teachings about ethical issues and relations to other religions. On leaving we felt our views on Islam had been either changed or challenged, inspiring us to tackle the Islam section of the RS GCSE. Many thanks to Mrs Bexon for organising and accompanying us on the trip! Natasha Waddell (LVT)
