Newsletter October 2009 FHS Summer Camp 2009

From the Headmistress Dear Parents, The hard work of both students and teachers was reflected in our public examination results this summer. At A level, 60.5% gained A grades; 85.7 % were awarded grades A and B. These results are a tremendous achievement and we are delighted that the Upper Sixth have secured some of the most competitive university places both in Britain and the USA. Congratulations also to the current Lower Sixth, who achieved commendably good GCSE results: 88.8% were awarded A*, A or B. In the first assembly of this term, certificates of outstanding achievement were presented to those who have achieved exclusively A or A* GCSE grades in ten or more GCSEs. In June, girls in the Lower Fifth were entered early for GCSE science modules in Biology, Chemistry and Physics; some girls scored 100% in these examinations.

Hannah Davidson, Lauren Kay-Lambert, Isobel Apter, Lois Brown, Ranya Mulchandani and friends enjoy a break during FHS Summer Camp 2009 (see pages 6 & 7).

Many congratulations also to several Sixth Formers who achieved Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards during the summer holidays, by successfully completing their final assessment expedition in Snowdonia.

to provide young Westminster children in foster care with an activity holiday they will probably always remember. Mr. Smith led FHS Summer Camp 2009, with the help of Mrs Drummond, Miss Webb and Dr Welch. The necessary sponsorship was raised in a variety of ways, including a generous donation from the FHS Parents’ Association. Sincere thanks to everyone involved in this important charitable project. Upper Fifth and Sixth Formers who would like to volunteer for the committee of Summer Camp 2010 should contact Mr. Chiverton for further details.

For the third successive year, a team of FHS senior pupils and four members of staff gave up a week of their summer holidays

In addition to the many musical events in school this term, for the first time this year, the Thirds (Year 7) will sing in a charity concert

I look forward to seeing you at the many school events this term. Enclosed with this newsletter is information about the FHS Christmas Fair on Saturday November 21st from 2-4pm, which is set to be bigger and better than ever! Grateful thanks to all those parents who have offered to help the Committee of the Parents’ Association in this festive event.

Staff News It was not only FHS pupils who excelled in public examinations this summer; their teachers have been leading by example. Several months ago, Miss Dickens, Head of Italian and Deputy Head of Sixth Form, set herself the challenge of learning Spanish from scratch and she sat the A level examination in Spanish in June. Never knowingly having under-achieved (Miss Dickens has a joint honours degree from Cambridge), she not only gained an A grade in Spanish A level this summer, but also achieved a “perfect” score of 600/600 marks. Many congratulations to Miss Dickens!! As this newsletter goes to press, several members of FHS staff are completing their preparations for the “Rat Race”: a one day triathlon race, which takes place throughout London on Sunday 27th September. The P.E. Department will be represented by Miss Gallagher, Miss Mahieu and Miss Tucker, who are participating in order to raise money for the school FHS is helping to sponsor: St Amedeus School in Tanzania. Giftaid contributions for the FHS team can be made via: www.justgiving.com/ratracetanzania

St Amedeus School Project Most of you may be aware that I am heading out for the summer term next year to work at St Amedeus School, in Moshi, Tanzania, which is currently being built and scheduled to open in January. Miss Dickens set up an initial link with the school which she and Miss Hack visited last December along with a group of girls in the Sixth Form. Various fundraisers for the school have been really successful, including a sky dive which raised over £9000 last year. The first for this year, however, is the participation of Miss Tucker, Miss Mahieu and myself, as well as some of our sixth formers in a team event known as the “Rat Race”, which will take place on Sunday 27th September. The day will involve the completion of a variety of exciting and challenging tasks along a set course taking in many sights and areas of London.

Third Year Activity Day 2009 On Friday 11th September, all of the new Third Year girls, accompanied by Mr. Chiverton, Miss Webb, Miss Gallagher, Miss Sainty, Miss Baig and Miss Murugan, enjoyed a day of fun team building activities at Sayers Croft Field Centre in Surrey.

and trying them out on the murky waters of the Sayers Croft pond. Despite a number of close calls, none of the girls’ wobbly rafts deposited them in the water, although many returned to shore rather damp.

Having first been divided into six groups, the girls took it in turns to rotate around the exciting activities on offer; whilst some began by hurtling along the giant zip wire, others were involved in practical team puzzles, or took their chances up on the high ropes course.

Our visit to Sayers Croft also allowed us to see the new Iron Age Round House which, thanks to the Parents’ Association’s very generous donation of £2000 towards thatching costs, is now close to completion. Our thanks go to David Quoroll, the manager of Sayers Croft, and all of his team, for such an excellent day.

Around midday a hearty outdoor picnic was enjoyed by all and, after lunch, great fun was had building rafts

Lower Sixth Theatre Studies trip to “Stockwell” Girls studying Theatre Studies in the Lower Sixth saw an exciting production on Wednesday 16th September. Sophie Lifschutz, an old girl of the school, is currently making a name for herself as a director, having studied Drama and German at Bristol University. She devised a piece based on transcripts of the enquiry into the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes, and, having received glowing reviews for its performances at the Landor (a fringe pub-theatre), her play, “Stockwell”, has now transferred to the Tricycle Theatre in Kilburn. Miss Williamson, Mrs Oakley and Mrs Bachle-Morris accompanied the girls. Sophie Lifschutz will be coming into school to run a workshop on some of the drama techniques she used in devising the play. Mathematics Trip to Regent’s Park

The Thirds went to Regent’s Park in the summer term for a Mathematics Trail. It all started off with a map of Regent’s Park. We answered lots of questions which really made you think and look around. The trail took us all around the whole park. There was one question which asked us to measure the length of a bridge, then to draw a plan view of a pillar from that same bridge. Then, a question asked us to go to a flower bed and see the shape of the outside; next, to the cafe when we looked at the shape of the roof. Lower Fourths working on the Mathematics Trail in Regent's Park

Onwards then to the other side of the park to the big gate where we looked out for features that spoilt the gate’s symmetry. We drew the webbed and non- webbed feet from ducks and coots near a small pond. We counted the petals on different flowers and found that they were always Fibonacci numbers, 1,1,2,3,5,8,13….. (can you see the pattern?). Finally, we discovered the petrified tree which was very, very old. Overall, it was a great day, though I think it was the hottest day ever for walking in the park! Royal Academy of Music Post Graduate Guinea Pigs!

Many thanks to all girls who auditioned for this term's main school play - and over sixty of you did! The play is cast, rehearsals have already begun and a meeting has been held for the stage crews. If your daughter is acting, please remind her to check the drama noticeboard for rehearsal details, which are published in advance every Friday. Inevitably there will be a few clashes, and your support is much appreciated in enabling girls to meet their rehearsal commitments. If your daughter is involved backstage, please plan for her to be very busy from mid-November onwards.

As part of their Post Graduate Course in Vocal Studies, The Royal Academy of Music offers a unit for the teaching of young singers. Five girls from the Lower Fifth were chosen to be guinea pigs! The Academy students taught them for half a term and then they had to appear in front of an examining board at the RAM. I think that they all gained a great deal and enjoyed the venture. I gather that the Academy Post Graduate students all did very well in their final assessment! Mrs. Rolfe-Johnson Head of Music Department F r a n c i s

Francis Holland Summer Camp You’ll need to forget Martha’s Vineyard, Chamonix and Klosters. You’ll even need to forget Totnes, Harrogate and Burnham Market. Why? Because Summer Camp is about Francis Holland sixth formers giving their patience, their commitment and five days of their time and becoming really important role models. The task? To work with, play with, and support children in foster care through five days of activities at Sayers Croft Field Centre.

Welcome back to a new school year. We hope you have had a very enjoyable summer and are raring to go …!!

2009 was the third year since FHS initiated this unique project. Working closely with Westminster Social Services and Sayers Croft, Summer Camp has a host of benefits. Children in foster care gain from a huge range of outdoor pursuits; carers get some respite; FHS sixth formers are coached to lead orienteering, model making, raft building, climbing and team games; and lastly, our pupils’ horizons are extended and their confidence develops as they give their time and talents to the wider community. Thirteen sixth formers and four staff were the participants from FHS; five social workers from Westminster accompanied the young children; and once again the instructors at Sayers Croft were patient and skilful. Not content with all the formal sessions, our girls organised extra sessions of rounders, bulldog, campfire singing and piggy back riding. Friendships were made and cemented. We had such a good time that there were few complaints about the poor mobile reception. (For future reference, girls, the best place is standing on the railings by the compost heaps …). Thanks to our sixth formers: Isobel Apter, Rachel Barker, Hannah Davidson, Tanysha Garcia, Olivia Hutton, Marina Jadir, Lauren Kay Lambert, Ranya Mulchandani, Eliana Neidich Schwartz, Erica Seal, Jamila Wingett, and Candice von der Wehl. Thanks also to the staff: Miss Webb, Dr Welch and Mrs Drummond

• Used Uniform – We are looking for a couple of volunteers to help with the Used Uniform sales, which will now take place twice a year, January and June, instead of only in the summer. Please contact the office for further details.

"Now get into a big circle ..."

• Parents’ Association AGM – 3rd November, 6:30pm. Please put this important date in your diaries and join us for a fascinating talk by the Oxford University Admissions Department – it’s never too early! – followed by a sumptuous buffet supper. Watch out for invitations that will arrive with you very shortly.

Team challenge; you put your left leg in, your put your left leg out ...

Mr. Smith English and Drama Department

• The Christmas Fair – 21st November, 2009 from 2pm to 4pm. Our very grateful thanks to those parents who have kindly volunteered to help on the day – we will be in touch very soon with details. This year promises to be even better than last with some new exciting stalls: for example, Jamie Oliver and Urban Outfitters, amongst others.

Encouragement and support

The Xmas Café will be open again and we are looking for any good bakers to come forward and bake some cakes as contributions to the fayre – last year was a roaring success with many delicious offerings. Again, please contact the school office to be put in touch with a Committee member. • Farewell – it is with great sadness that we bid ‘farewell’ to Daphne Hadjipateras who has worked tirelessly during her years on the Committee – ‘Thank You’ Daphne, you will be greatly missed! Pond dipping - one of the quieter activities, but a great favourite with the youngsters Raft building ... you get wet ... and not a FHS girl in sight!

Equestrian Club visit to West Hampstead Mounted Police Stables

Knapp House 2009 At the end of last term, the Upper Fourth spent six days down in the depths of North Devon at our favourite Activity Centre, Knapp House. The girls enjoyed getting involved in all manner of activities, from water skiing to abseiling, tunnel crawling to crabbing, and abseiling to rafting, many of which they had never done before. The girls thoroughly enjoyed water-skiing. Some made it round two circuits in style, whilst others stylishly dived head first after only a couple of metres, but fun was had by all. After twenty sessions of various activities, the girls were rewarded with a Disco on the final evening; a time when soaking clothes and mud-caked shoes are quietly forgotten and more glamorous outfits are dragged from the depths of heaped up suitcases, and the girls look like Francis Holland girls once more. The party arrived at school on Friday evening, weary and slightly unkempt, but fulfilled and happy. It had been a wonderful week. Special thanks must go to the staff who accompanied them to Devon, and who daringly took part in all the activities too; Mrs. Bachle-Morris, Mr. Clayton, Miss Laytham, Miss O’ Laoire, Miss Bacon, Mr. Ward.

After school on Monday 6th July a group of six horse-mad girls, accompanied by Mrs. Durham and myself, were lucky enough to visit the West Hampstead Mounted Police Stables. We were kindly invited by P.C. Jane Disspain to spend the evening looking round the stables and meeting the police horses. Some of the horses were incredibly friendly; no doubt helped by the carrots and apples brought along by the girls! However, others were jealous of the treats being shared around and became rather bad tempered, creating a lot of noise kicking at the stable doors with their enormous hooves.

Equestrian Club meet the horses!

We were told about the life of the horses and their riders, which often involves long days of strenuous work. The horses undergo rigorous training to ensure that they will be unflappable in the heaviest of traffic and riot situations. Only horses with a suitable nature make the cut. Unfortunately their presence is not always appreciated, and we were shown some shocking footage of police horses caught in a football riot, where riders were pulled off of their horses. Next we were taken to the tack room where we were shown the immaculate saddles and bridles, which were extremely heavy with all the extra equipment that the horses have to carry. We were shown the armour and weaponry, and it is fair to say that the girls were just as enthralled by the chance to handle police batons as they Isabelle Com ber (LIVM) m were by meeting the akes a new fr iend horses! Duke of Edinburgh's Award During the Summer Holidays, while most of us were lapping up the sunshine far away from London, ten brave girls battled the elements on their Gold expeditions. Katherine Arnot, Louisa Dearman, Iszy Foss, Bryony Foss, Ali Gillum, Emily Johnson, Sophie Millns, Ranya Mulchandani, Stella Papadopoulos and Erica Seal all had a fabulous (and wet) time in the Peak District and Snowdonia. All girls passed their expeditions with flying colours and should be enormously proud of their efforts. Congratulations! Bronze expeditions are going out in September and October and we wish all girls good luck, and pray for no rain. An account of the Assessment expedition by Stella Papadopoulos… Gold D of E – Snowdonia, Wales. “I completed my gold Duke of Edinburgh expedition this summer. I’m not going to lie and tell you it felt like a ‘walk in the park’, because it didn’t, it felt exhausting. We had two different expeditions; the practice, in the Peak District, and the assessment, where we went to Snowdonia in Wales. During the assessment, we were wild camping in the mountains by ourselves, which made us realise

the basics we take for granted at home, like a toilet! We also realised how much we take our mothers’ cooking for granted at home, as cooking without the most basic of utensils proved to be a challenge. We also gained some vital skills, as in how to navigate ourselves around to our designated campsites; we were given two maps and a compass. By the end of the week, we were all able to map read comfortably. Altogether in the five days, we walked a staggering 85 kilometres. The highlight of my week was when one of our team members clumsily fell in a waist-high river, but managed to safely recover, and once she had, we could not stop laughing for the rest of the week. In my opinion, gold Duke of Edinburgh is one of those things that requires physical and mental stamina. However, once completed, there was not only a sense of relief, but a great sense of satisfaction. Although it was tough, if I had the chance to do it all over again, I would. It was an amazing experience and adventure I won’t forget, and I would recommend it to anyone!” Stella Papadopoulos LVICD

A Sports Day so good, we did it twice! After a slightly rain interrupted last week of term, the summer term ended superbly in 2009 with the penultimate whole school Sports Day and Swimming Gala events. It was fantastic to see so many girls involved so strongly in both days and it will be with great anticipation that we all look forward to the ever approaching summer 2010! Many thanks to all staff for helping on the day, students for participating so well and parents for supporting so loyally. Autumn is here and it has already started at break-neck speed. Team trials are now completed and fixtures underway. Parents are strongly encouraged to come along to fixtures and support our many FHS sports teams; it is lovely to hear the cheering from the sidelines. HELP FUND

Reuse-Recycle!

As I write Lower Sixth girls are composing their applications for the Help Fund Committee and Kaammini Chanrai, Violet Farkas and Hanmo Zhang have volunteered to remain on the Committee for another few months. This means they will be able to pass on the benefit of their knowledge and experience to the new members and we hope this will make Help Fund even better at raising money for worthy causes.

Francis Holland’s carbon footprint committee (CFC) is increasingly aware of the school’s carbon footprint and aims to spread that awareness throughout all the members of the school community by recycling paper and books as much as possible. On the last day of the Summer Term Diego and I loaded 31 boxes of secondhand text books and equipment into my car (see picture) for delivery to School Aid – a charity that sends books and equipment to Africa for use in schools less fortunate than our own. This is the third year running we have done this and School Aid are very grateful for our support of their excellent work.

The Sponsored Walk this year is on 6th October and will be raising money for The Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and Summer Camp, in which FHS girls take disadvantaged children from Westminster away for an activity holiday in the summer. This means our Sponsored Walk focus this year is again on children.
