A note from the
EDITOR t’s crazy to think we’ve hit the midyear mark already, how time flies. As you may have noticed, we have decided to take STRUT in a new, exciting direction. Although it started as a newsletter, it is now a tri-annual full-fledged publication. Our decision was rooted in bringing more validity to what we are trying to accomplish as a brand By making STRUT into a publication, we strive to provide substance for our team in order to stay inspired, as opposed to the fluff that so commonly gets circulated. We are expanding the content we cover in STRUT to include beauty, trends, culture, spotlight, digital and of course, all things hair. We are so excited to feature different members of the TONI&GUY community. It’s so crucial to stay connected with each other and reinforce the idea of the TONI&GUY culture. Through this publication, we hope to keep everyone updated not only on what’s happening in the industry, but more importantly—with what’s happening with our hairdressers, students and leaders. As a company, TONI&GUY has prided itself on being innovative and ahead of the curve in the hair industry. We hope to uphold these standards in the way we communicate through this publication and that it will be an accurate representation of our vision as artists and as a brand. We look forward to bringing you exciting new updates by bringing STRUT to the next level.
“Learning and innovation go hand in hand. The arrogance of success is to think that what you did yesterday will be sufficient for tomorrow.”

TONI&GUY IN TORONTO TONI&GUY is back in the Canadian market with a new franchise location on Cumberland Street in the trendy Yorkville neighborhood of Toronto, ON. Opening on May 8th, Clarissa + Rob Pupo are excited to rejoin the TONI&GUY family as salon franchise owners. We met up with Clarissa and Rob prior to their salon opening to discuss the importance of being a part of a brand, their passion for hairdressing and love of TONI&GUY. WHAT ARE THE MAIN DIFFERENCES BETWEEN OWNING AN INDEPENDENT SALON VS. OWNING A TONI&GUY HAIRDRESSING SALON? CLARISSA PUPO: Our decision to join TONI&GUY was rooted in bringing more validity to what we were trying to accomplish as a salon and a brand. With TONI&GUY the culture has already been established by passionate people who have been in the biz for a long time and it works. I believed in the vision and it was where I started my career so it became a part of me. A great brand will give you guidance and allow you to focus on your skills, whilst taking a lot of the legwork out of the picture. Being part of TONI&GUY also allows you to belong to a group of people who share the same passion and vision.
WHAT STRATEGIES WOULD YOU USE TO MOTIVATE YOUR TEAM? CP: I am constantly looking for new ways to motivate team members. After 20 years in the business I’ve learned people need to motivate themselves, firstly. They need to constantly find ways to stay inspired and cannot rely on others to do so. Saying that, we use a combination of strategies in our salon to help keep them on track…we do financial goal setting, education, and whenever I find anything inspiring on YouTube or in a book (something that would inspire me), I will send it to them via email, text or post in our staff breakroom. The most important thing we have found is to never go too long without some sort of motivational tool. Creative people need to be inspired continuously!
HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS AND HOW DO YOU MEASURE UP TO YOUR OWN DEFINITION? CP: To me, success is whatever makes you happy. If you are doing what you love and you have a smile on your face while you’re doing it, you are successful.
6
• STRUT
ON A SCALE OF 1–10, HOW LUCKY DO YOU THINK YOU ARE, AND WHY? CP: I’d say 10 currently! The older I get the more grateful I am for the small stuff. I have my health, my family and amidst a few hard years, everything is where it is meant to be!
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE 90S JAM? CP: Theres a few…Notorious B.I.G. – Hypnotize! And anything from Sting to Oasis to Mariah, reminds me of when we first opened our original T&G salon in 1998!
WHAT EVENTS DROVE YOU TO OPEN A TONI&GUY SALON? ROB PUPO: When I went London I had the opportunity to assist backstage at the Iconic Alternative Hairshow, which allowed me to witness first-hand the energy and culture of what the TONI&GUY brand stood for. TONI&GUY had an energy that stood out amongst the others. After the show, I was inspired like never before. Everything that caught my eye was connected to the TONI&GUY brand. When I came home to Toronto I found out that TONI&GUY salon was opening in the area. I quickly realized my destiny and started work there straight away. Soon after starting as an Art Director, I fell in love with my amazing wife Clarissa (who at the time was the Salon Coordinator and salon partner). Our strong work ethic, and enthusiasm for the brand led us to taking complete responsibility for TONI&GUY Toronto. Our love for each other, our employees and the hairdressing industry allowed us to grow personally and professionally.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST ABOUT OWNING YOUR OWN SALON? RP: When you own a salon, you become a person who puts everyone else first and that is a big part of who I am. The

At the TONI&GUY Salon + Academy Summit in 2014, the TONI&GUY Academy, Newtown Campus located in Newtown, CT won the award for ‘Most Photographic Award Entries’. As part of their award, Zak Mascolo and TONI&GUY Artistic Team flew to Newtown, CT to host a class on how to have a successful photoshoot for students and faculty. The class was a huge success—provoking Zak to honor each Summit Award winner of ‘Most Photographic Award Entries’ each year with their own tutorial and shoot. Zak and the Artistic Team will share their personal tips on how to have a successful shoot to maximize their potential for winning a Photographic Award. During the visit to TONI&GUY Academy, Newtown Campus, Zak and team were hosted by academy franchise owner, Dan Riccio for a weekend full of events including a Grand Opening White Party of Newtown Campus, and 2-Day sold out Advanced Class with Zak.
ON LOCATION NEWTOWN, CT
MOOD BOARD MUSTS
One key to a successful shoot is planning—Zak and team discussed the importance of creating ‘mood boards’ prior to any shoot during their tutorial. While they discussed various mood board categories, models were simultaneously being prepped in front of attendees. Once the models were transformed, they were then placed on set and the mood boards were brought to life. The entire student body, faculty + staff, and models were inspired by the creative and very informative morning—overall the event was quite a success! EVER WONDER HOW THE IMAGES YOU SEE FROM THE TONI&GUY ARTISTIC TEAM ARE ALWAYS A SUCCESS? MOOD BOARDS SHOULD BE PART OF EVERY PHOTO SESSION PLANNING: EACH CATEGORY IS AS IMPORTANT AS THE NEXT! MOOD BOARD CATEGORIES: ¥¥ ART DIRECTION/CONCEPT: Define the concept and feeling of the shoot. ¥¥ LIGHTING: The best way to describe the lighting you are looking for in your
shoot is to share images with the photographer of what type of lighting serves as inspiration.
¥¥ POSING: Always a great idea; this provides posing examples for models.
It’s a way you can capture the mood and feeling of the shoot. This is also a great way to show new models direction so that they feel more comfortable in front of the camera.
¥¥ MODELS: Model suitability is everything! Find a great looking model with the
right hair texture needed to achieve the look for your concept.
¥¥ WARDROBE: The wardrobe is a key element in bringing the feeling of the
shoot together. Make sure it fits the concept and doesn’t distract from the hair.
¥¥ MAKE-UP: Hair, makeup, and wardrobe need to complement one another
creating harmony. If all of the elements are too bold and fighting for attention, the end result could be an unflattering image. If makeup is the focus for the shoot, the hair should be worn off the face or pulled back, making the face the highlight of the shot.
¥¥ THE HAIR: (Last but not least…) When shooting, remember that the focus
of the shoot should always be the hair. Bold cuts can be accented with soft colour, or interesting placement to enhance the shape. Strong colour placement should be finished smooth with high shine.
¥¥ DON’T FORGET: Make sure you always have the models bring nude/black
undergarments and heels. What if the shoes you have don’t fit? Even if you are only shooting from the waist up—heels promote amazing posture. Also, nails in need of a manicure can distract from a beautiful image.

TONI&GUY had the privilege of working with several deserving veterans, military wives, and family members to give them some fabulous new looks! During our time spent, women shared stories, connected with other veterans and wives, and just enjoyed a day of “me time.”
SPOTLIGHT Q&A
JOBY BAEZA -DALLAS ACADEMY STUDENT
WHERE ARE YOU FROM? Frisco, TX
HOW LONG WERE YOU IN THE MILITARY?
I served 3.5 years in the United States Army until I was medically discharged. I served one tour in Iraq for 11 months.
MEET HEATHER Heather Litz is the wife of USMC Veteran Andrew Litz. Andrew served three tours in Iraq, joining the Marines after 9/11. Throughout Andrew’s time spent in Iraq, he encountered several hardships—most notably being when an explosive device killed two of his fellow Marines and left Andrew with multiple injuries including a brain injury, a fractured neck and back, and PTSD. While Andrew served our country, Heather faced her own adversities including a health crisis while pregnant. The daily challenges of balancing a household with active children and her disabled veteran husband keeps Heather busy and serves as a constant reminder that life is precious. Heather’s positive outlook inspires others to stay motivated and positive through difficult times.
WHAT WAS YOUR M.O.S? Infantryman
WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO PURSUE COSMETOLOGY?
I’ve always known that I wanted to be a hairdresser, especially while in the Military because I would regularly cut my fellow soldiers’ hair in Iraq. One day I was sitting on a derrick tower in an oil field in west Texas and realized that I did not see myself doing this my entire life. So, I followed my passion and dream to become a cosmetologist.
WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE LESSON YOUR EXPERIENCES HAVE TAUGHT YOU?
Life is short and you should follow your dreams. Being part of TONI&GUY, I know I can reach my full potential because of the quality of education and Spotlight Culture. —STEPHANIE WILLIAMS

PASTEL TONES OF LAVENDER, SILVER, AND PEACHY HUES ARE CONSISTENTLY TRENDING AND ARE STILL AT THE TOP OF CLIENTS’ REQUESTS. HERE ARE A FEW KEY TIPS AND FORMULAS. • The process takes 2 steps—Pre-lighten the hair and then deposit target tone. You may have to pre-lighten the hair more than once depending on pre-existing colour and the integrity of the hair. • Consider your canvas: When creating a formula analyze the hair and pre-lighten it to the degree of lightness needed. A very pale yellow canvas is needed for the suggested formulas to ensure pastel tones. If the hair isn’t light enough the tone being applied will only act as a neutralizer and cancel out unwanted tones instead of creating the beautiful pastels desired. • Aftercare: Be sure clients are using a colour-safe shampoo and conditioner, and using cool water to retain the colour. • Longevity: Pastel tones are applied to prelightened hair and are considered semi/ demi tones—and will usually only last up to 20 shampoos.
FORMULA Use TIGI Copyright Colour: The formulas are based off working with 1 tube (2oz. |60ml 58g). Activator selection: 5 or 8.5 Volume 1 to 3 “is based on the amount of tone preferred by the client. CHARCOAL the DARK WAY TO DETOX
Activated charcoal is all the rage these days. Is it all it’s cracked up to be? We think so! Charcoal has been used for centuries for body detoxification as it is a powerful adsorber, essentially working as a magnet. It is a substance often derived from coconut shells or wood. In a process that involves exposure to extremely high temperatures, the charcoal develops a large number of pores. Through these pores, the charcoal is able to absorb most organic toxins, chemicals and poisons in your body.

It may seem counterintuitive to purify your drinking water with a stick of charcoal, but the Japanese have been doing it for centuries. Charcoal’s porous surface pulls chemicals out of tap water, its alkaline qualities also soften and improve its taste.

health goth LET’S BE HONEST, black is always in fashion but as hairdressers it holds a particularly special place in our hearts. We wear all black throughout our TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy experience and when it’s time to hit the salon and work we do it in all black. (Like we’d pick any other colour anyway.) The “It” street trend that mixes modern gothic sensibilities with sportswear— called Health Goth—is having its moment. Wearing black, eating right, and working out has never looked so good—and we couldn’t be more excited to be on the dark side.

GOOGLE PHOTOS: Free storage plus automatic syncing capabilities with Google Photos means you can say goodbye to running out of storage space on your smart phone forever. Deleting those cruise photos from last summer to make room for the new iOS update? I don’t think so! TIP: The automatic GIF creator is my personal favorite. SNAPSEED: Quick, uncomplicated, and completely free—Snapseed rivals some of the most advanced mobile photo editors available. The redesigned app incorporates powerful new features sure to earn a place on your home screen. Utilize the wide range of both tools and filters to achieve optimal results. Most importantly, the “Stacks” feature allows you to delete or re-edit any change for unparalleled flexibility.

GET #NOTICED* AND GET YOUR WORK SHARED ON INSTAGRAM START WITH A GOOD CAMERA
Use the newest technology. You can get great results with an iPhone 6. If you don’t have one, borrow a friend’s. LIGHTING IS KEY
Dark or distorted images won’t be shared. Be sure your light source isn’t behind the object you are photographing. Use a photo editing tool, like Snapseed, to correct photos that have a blue or yellow tint. DON’T WATERMARK IMAGES
Brands will credit you by mentioning or tagging your account. Watermarking images deters others from sharing your work. Alternately, direct message a non-watermarked version of the image you would like a brand to feature. TAG DON’T MENTION (# vs. @)
Tag accounts or hashtag photos instead of mentioning them. Most likely, popular accounts will not see that you’ve mentioned them in their activity feed.

BLOGGER BEAT Heidi Nazarudin
As both a fashion blogger at TheAmbitionista.com and as president of Blogger Babes, a blogging association of nearly 10,000 fashion and lifestyle bloggers I can say with confidence that often times, a big budget does not equal great style. For example in these photos I am wearing clothes that I got either from Zara and the thrift store. All in all I probably spent $150 total on the outfit. And as for my Prada bag - that’s a 10 year old bag that still looks great thanks to its clean and classic design. So how does one develop style, especially on a shoestring budget? Here are some tips: • REMEMBER THAT FORM MUST FOLLOW FUNCTION. Really think about your lifestyle and your work. Do you live in a tropical climate, a temperate one or an unpredictable one? Pick your fabrics around these factors. And don’t try to channel “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” in your daily life when your life is more “Breakfast and Babies.”, i.e. if you need to be active throughout the day, pick clothes that gives you some breathing room i.e culottes that have a bit of stretch to them and jersey blouses that don’y wrinkle easily. Conversely, if your life revolves around networking at elegant events, you have to invest in some statement pieces that you can dress up or down. • DEVELOP A PALETTE FOR YOUR WARDROBE. Okay black is safe, but jewel-tones are pretty fool proof too. So pick 1-2 jewel tones and develop some pieces around those tones. Mine is emerald green and sapphire blue. And if black is really is not your thing, select another neutral like white, grey or even a beautiful and rich camel. • DO NOT FOLLOW TRENDS. This serves two functions, one—you will never have to pay retail because you will always shop during sales, and two—you never have to throw anything away because everything will always be in style. I might spend $350 on a beautiful pair of of tailored pants, but those pants last me 10 years and will go with 15 other things, as opposed to that fringe skirt you will wear once and then throw away. • HAVE A LIST of items you need or must have to complete your wardrobe and stick to the list e.g instead of impulse buying 4 of those cute t-shirts or discovering you bought yet another black sweater, knowing that you need to save up $200 for a beautiful coat (hopefully on sale!) will help you get there.. • LEARN TO SHOP WELL. I love eBay for beautiful pre-loved designer clothes and accessories, and armed with your list, make a group trip to a premium outlet mall—it will change your perception on paying retail ever again.

H
ave you ever wanted to ask Bruno Mascolo, the CEO of TONI&GUY, how he got his start in the Hairdressing industry? Or who his favorite fashion/ hair icons are? Or how many different colour suits he owns? We asked the TONI&GUY Community to submit their inquiries. Here’s what happened...
Knowing what you know now, what piece of wisdom would you want to share with your younger self? LEE CALDERA, SALON DIRECTOR (LA CANTERA, TX)
What I would share with my younger self is to try and understand that we all have an ego, but that we cannot let our egos lead the way. We must also live in the present, since dwelling in the past can make you feel depressed, while obsessing about the future gives you anxiety. Ultimately, the only way to create the future is to focus on the here and now. So I would tell any entrepreneur or artist to live for the now and to understand that the process, along with the present moment is the greatest gift in life.
What is your biggest motivatION? SYDNEY WORTHINGTON, COSMETOLOGY STUDENT (ATLANTA, GA)
I’m thankful for my wonderful family, wife and children to come home to unwind with during after the day, which motivates and recharges me for the next day. It also motivates me when I see and feel that the TONI&GUY family is working together towards the same goal.
How did you get YOUR What’s your favorite START in the industry? museum to visit? KIERA WATKINS, COSMETOLOGY STUDENT (ATLANTA, GA)
ERIN POWERS CHAN, SALON EDUCATION DIRECTOR (TUCSON, AZ)
It all changed when one Saturday, I was ready to go out to play soccer and my father was short staffed at his salon, so he made me help him, which I was upset about. I remember walking up to the shop and I was nervous----girls my age who were known as Saturday girls were helping. After a few weeks they invited me to parties and such. It was a strange feeling for me, as it was the first time I developed a friendship with a girl –I was used to being friends with just boys and playing soccer.
I really like the New Museum of Modern Art in LA and NYC as well as The Louvre in Paris. However, when I recently visited Paris, I discovered Montparnasse, which is located in an area where all the artists used to spend their time! Exposing myself to the beauty and studios that artists like Picasso, Modigliani and Dali used to work was an amazing look into the lives of these monumental figures; it was an added touch to the Montparnasse.
What is your all-time favorite song?
I then began Art College, but then I dropped out since I was needed to help at the salon. From this point FIANNA FLUESS, TONI&GUY MARINA DEL REY, CA STUDIO forward, I viewed hairdressing differently. I began hairdressing as a “Pretty Woman” — Roy Orbison means of meeting girls and during that process; I fell in love with hairdressing. I realized that hairdressing was an incredible expressive art, where hair was the material and where it could KAITLIN MAHER, APPRENTICE (SAN TAN VILLAGE, AZ) take the shape of anything. Now, since my desire to be a businessman Paris and Florence. was still strong, I was able to use both my left and right brain and decided to look at this art, from a business For a chance to be featured in ‘Ask Bruno’ in the next volume of STRUT, submit your perspective... and the rest is history. question(s) along with your full name,

A FORMER TONI&GUY STYLIST DISHES ON HOW SHE MADE IT TO THE TOP I REMEMBER IT VIVIDLY. I WAS IN MY LITTLE BLACK APRON ANXIOUSLY WAITING FOR THE SALON DEMO TO BEGIN... The sound of marching heels broke the silence as the classroom door opened up and in walked what looked to me like the entire cast of the Matrix had just entered “The Rabbit Hole”. They were so put together—dressed in all black from head to toe with the most cutting edge haircuts I had ever seen—and tattoos, you can’t forget the tattoos. TONI&GUY had arrived. Well...not actually Toni and Guy Mascolo themselves, but a solid representation of their brand nonetheless. I remember being in absolute awe of how precise they were with each section of hair they parted and every methodical snip of their 6” scissors. To me this was like watching a fine artist paint on a brand new canvas, it was downright intimidating, inspiring, yet absolutely beautiful all at the same time. I knew then and there that dropping off my resumé to the nearest T&G salon was my first stop when clocking in that final 1600th hour. I wanted in. I had been quite familiar with this “Matrix” effect, as I had grown up the daughter of a full-time Magician. My mother was a cosmetologist so I began learning the importance of stage makeup and hairstyling at a young age. I did in fact follow through with my initial plan to beeline it to TONI&GUY salon after graduating from Regency Beauty Institute in Tucson, Arizona. It was a no brainer decision for me truthfully, the training was worth gold. Not to mention I could dress in all black and wear my tattoos proudly as I intended when getting them. My decision to leave the salon industry was a strategic move, but also an incredibly tough decision. Los Angeles became my “home” in 2012 when I was hired as an Instructor and Assistant Production Coordinator for Dinair. I traveled the country and led workshops and demonstrations at every convention known to (wo)man. When we weren’t on the road I was in the studio—casting talent, doing hair/makeup for photoshoots, and was eventually roped into doing on-camera tutorials for their digital media campaigns. This opened my eyes further to the idea of being behind-the-camera—it was an immediate love affair!

Nail art had become another side of my artistry that I loved to explore. After Tucson, once I had moved west to Los Angeles, I answered a casting ad that read ‘CALLING ALL HAIRDRESSERS, MUA’S AND NAIL ARTISTS’, I immediately responded as all- of-the-above, which in this case—just happened to be true! By now I think you must recognize my love for all things beauty.
That casting call launched the opportunity to exercise an entirely different art medium. I was the host of a beauty/lifestyle YouTube channel offering a new tutorial each week. The ability to use that platform to connect globally with people has been one of the most incredible experiences of my career. I would encourage anyone and everyone to become a part of the community and see what it is all about. I’m sure it is not new information to you that YouTube has become a number one destination for people to learn new things and not just for hysterical cat videos. Looking back, if you were to tell me that I would go from attending cosmetology school, to launching a YouTube channel that would lead to opportunities like being cast as a manicurist on the Ellen Degeneres Show, to producing beauty tutorials for Disney, hosting segments on national TV as a trend reporter for New York Fashion Week, and walking down the red carpet with A-list celebs—I would have NEVER believed you. All things considered, I encourage each of you to exercise your strengths, explore different art mediums—even in the smallest ways, and never let the intimidation of the “Matrix” get the best of you. After all, you never know where it may lead. “You mustn’t be afraid to dream a little bigger darling!”

MY NAME IS CHERIN CHOI.
I am a hair colourist at Ramirez | Tran Salon in beautiful Beverly Hills, California. I grew up in Southern California, then spent my formative young adult years in Northern California. After some time living abroad, I moved to Los Angeles where I started my hair career 4 years ago with TONI&GUY in Santa Monica. Assisting at Neil George was such a wonderful growth process. I learned so many amazing techniques from some of the best in the business. When Ramirez | Tran opened in 2013, I found an opportunity to begin focusing on my craft full time on the floor. I fell in love with the craft of colouring hair and the transformation process I share with my clients.

DEVON BEGAN HER CAREER AS A STUDENT AT THE TONI&GUY HAIRDRESSING ACADEMY— DALLAS CAMPUS IN 2001. Following graduation, she began working for the company as a stylist at the Sherry Lane and Northpark locations. During her time at these salons, Devon became part of the leadership team as Assistant Salon Director and Salon Education Director. Her creativity has allowed her to maintain her role as an integral part of the Senior Artistic Team, in addition to traveling and teaching advanced classes to hairdressers around the country. In 2003, after recognizing her passion for teaching, Devon obtained her instructor’s license and began teaching at the Dallas Campus. Soon after, Devon became the Academy Education Director, and eventually Academy Director. Devon is currently a Regional Education Director living in Dallas with her dreamy ginger husband and their two cats—Wyatt (his) and Mr. C.A.T. (cute and tough) (hers).
