GISD Fills Coaching Vacancies By Galen Wellnicki Sports Editor
The Georgetown Independent School District's athletics department has been busy filling vacancies in the coaching staffs at East View and Georgetown along with the three middle schools. Both open head coaching positions have been filled — Kara Del Bosque has been named volleyball coach and girls athletics coordinator at East View, and Jason Rich will be the new boys soccer coach at GHS. Del Bosque replaces Justeen Coulson and Rich will take over for veteran Eagles coach Wes Kidd. Del Bosque, a former standout athlete at Louisiana Tech, comes to the Patriots from a season at Class 3A Cameron Yoe after leading Class 4A Robinson to the UIL State Tournament in 2014 where the Rockets (39-12) lost to eventual state champion Decatur. The daughter of a volleyball coach, Del Bosque has five years of head coaching

experience. At Louisiana Tech, Del Bosque was a four-year starter in volleyball and also played basketball one season. She ranks as one of the all-time block leaders in both Louisiana Tech and Western Athletic Conference history.

GHS, East View End 7-on-7 Campaigns Georgetown won two of its three pool games this past Saturday at the Arlington Lamar qualifying event for the Texas State 7-on-7 Tournament on July 8-9 at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station. The Eagles opened pool action with a 33-19 victory over North Forney, lost to Arlington Bowie by the same score in the second game, and then bested Richardson Lake Highlands, 42-28. The loss to Bowie cost GHS its final chance to qualify for the 64-team field at state. Bowie went on to qualify for state, while Georgetown finished its summer campaign with a 7-6 mark having gone 1-2 at Lake Travis, 2-2 at Round Rock Westwood, and 2-1 at Belton before finishing at Arlington. The Eagles also went 6-3 in the annual Lone Star Shootout, a non-state qualifier, at Belton. "Our loss was to the winner of our

division which earned a spot at state," GHS coach Kyle Herman said. "We won our first game handily with defense getting several stops and offense putting 30-plus points on the board. "We came out flat in second game and lost 33-19. Defense played well in the second half of that game, getting a pick by Ethan Campbell on the opening drive for them. We then marched down and scored. Defense got another stop, but offense failed to convert on third down on the second set of downs. Offense failed to score again the second half. "In third game, both sides of the ball came to play. Defense got several stops, and offense had its best game of day, scoring 42 points. We were able to get Nic Crombie back on the field Saturday and he made some good catches and should prove a valuable addition to the already strong receiving core we have." Looking at the team's progress during the summer, Herman, father of GHS senior quarterback, Chandler Herman, said, "Overall, the team improved this month, with defense getting stronger each week and more offensive guys making plays. "While we didn't achieve the goal of making it to state, the kids laid the foundation in the passing game for having a good fall season and hopefully surpassing last 7-on-7 cont. on B4

Eagles Senior Corrales Commits To Play For Cats Georgetown receiver Beau Corrales announced recently that he will play his college football for Texas State University in San Marcos. Photo by Russell Rinn
Georgetown senior wide receiver Beau Corrales verbally committed to play his college football at Texas State, a member of the Division I (Bowl subdivision) Sun Belt Conference. The 6-foot-3, 203-pound Corrales would become the first GHS player to be sign a major college football scholarship agreement out of high school since Robert Peachey, who signed with North Texas in 2005. Jake Hubenak, who was the quarterback of Georgetown's state runner-up team in 2012, walked-on at Oklahoma State in 2013 and was a junior college standout at Blinn College in 2014 before going to Texas A&M last year and starting in the Music City Bowl in December. Corrales was an All-District 25-5A selection in football last season, including a standout performance in the Eagles' 70-66 area loss to Boerne Champion in the 5A state playoffs. He caught 63 balls last season. An all-around athlete, Corrales was the co-Defensive MVP on the 25-5A All-District Basketball team and anchored Georgetown's relay teams in the 25-5A track and field championships. Texas State's Bobcats will be in their second season under head coach Everett Withers when Corrales arrives on the San Marcos campus. Other members of the Sun Belt Conference currently are Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, Arkansas State, Troy, Louisiana, Georgia State, Idaho, South Alabama, New Mexico State and Louisiana-Monroe.

Four GHS Baseballers Pick Schools Four recent Georgetown graduates — outfielder Jace Arrieta, relief pitcher Daniel Lewis, second baseman Tyler Mendoza, and starting pitcher Austin Weaver — capped the Eagles 14-0 run through District 25-5A and advance to the Region IV-5A quarterfinals by signing college agreements. Weaver will attend NCAA Division II St. Edward's in Austin; Lewis and Mendoza will go to National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Paris Junior College; and Arrieta will continue his career at NJCAA Division III North Lake College in Irving. Six of the seven seniors on coach Adam Foster's Eagles signed to continue their baseball careers at the next level. The four joined previous signees — shortstop Ty Markee (St. Edward's) and pitcher Brady Childress (McLennan Community College in Waco). A seventh GHS senior — third baseman Garrett Conlan will attend Baylor as a senior. Coach Adam Fostersaid: "Very proud of these seniors and all they have accomplished for this program! They have grown into great young men and great leaders. We will miss the leadership, attitude and effort they brought to the ball park every day! We wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors!" Austin Weaver's resume: The right-handed Weaver (6-0, 200) was the Most Valuable Player in 25-5A and was selected to play in the Austin Area Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Game at the Dell Diamond. He won 10 of 12 decisions, posted a 1.235 earned-run average, struckout 55 and walked 10. Daniel Lewis' resume: The right-handed Lewis (6-0, 170) was a first-team All-District 25-5A performer as a senior. Established a new school record with 11 saves in 12 opportunities, had a 0.887 earned run average, struck out 19 and walked five. Tyler Mendoza's resume: Mendoza (510, 165) was a first-team All-District 25-5A selection as a senior. Stole 27 bases,

the rest of the team. I also hope that we can build the same kind of bond with our new teammates that we had at Georgetown. I believe that close bond gives everyone more fight to win games." How would you describe yourself as an athlete? "A relentless competitor. That's what coach Foster has always told us to be remembered as whether we won or lost. Never give up, never give in. Chase victory to the very last out. Physically, we all have worked hard for the last four years with weight (training), fielding drills, running, hitting and throwing, so I’m in pretty good shape, but there’s always room for improvement."
Four members of Georgetown’s District 25-5A champion baseball team recently solidified their college plans. Jace Arrieta (bottom left) will attend North Lake College, Austin Weaver will go to St. Edward’s University, and Daniel Lewis and Tyler Mendoza will join the Paris Junior College program. while hitting .340 with a .429 on-base percentage. He scored 34 runs and had 17 RBI. Jace Arrieta’s resume: Arrieta (5-8, 170), also a ball-hawking linebacker in football, was an honorable mention All-District 25-5A selection for the district champions. Playing in 18 games, most in right field, he had a .314 on-base percentage. The Austin Weaver file: Course of study: Business management. Why did you pick St. Edward's? "I love the atmosphere around the school and baseball program. It is close to home, and they really made me feel like a part of the St. Edward's family. The coaches at St. Edward's are good men and really care about their players. When looking for a college program to play for that was one of characteristics I wanted in my coaches." How do they play to use your talents? "I will spend the fall semester banging for time as
a starter, and if the starter roll doesn’t pan out then I will most likely come out of the bullpen. I am looking forward to competing for playing time in the fall." What do you feel you will add to the school's program? "I know I will bring a grinder’s mentality; I have learned a lot from my high school coaches on what it takes to get better every day. I will bring leadership and a tenacious attitude on the mound; we will need that to get St. Edwards to Cary, N.C., for the (Division II) College World Series." How would you describe yourself as an athlete? "We are all not blessed with great athletic ability, so maximizing what we are blessed with is what I have to do as an athlete. Being competitive in everything I do helps make up for any athletic ability I am lacking." What motivates you? "I want to be the best at what I do, so it is a constant motivator to keep working

as hard as I can and get my teammates to do the same. I love my teammates; I play for my teammates; I work for my teammates; and I always want to do what’s best for the team." In what areas do you feel you have to improve for the next level? "I always want to keep trying to improve my velocity, but I really want to keep developing my secondary pitches so I can throw them in any count and any location." How has the GHS program prepared you for the next level? "They have instilled a competitive edge, work ethic and selfless team-first attitude that will benefit me not in just baseball but in life." What has been the highlight of your career to date? "Being voted by the district as the MVP of the most-competitive district in Central Texas and being voted by my teammates as our most valuable player, it was the most rewarding for me because of all the hard work I put in and all the adversity I have faced as an Eagle baseball player." What are your longrange goals both personally and athletically? "Getting my degree is the most important thing I can do, but athletically I want to lead St. Edwards back to the Division II College World Series." Who have been the most important people in your development? "Coach Brinley and Coach Foster have really taught me how to not only be a better baseball player, but that being a good man and teammate are more important than being a great baseball player. I don’t want to be remembered for what I did on the baseball field— I want to be remembered as great man, friend, and teammate." What makes you the person you are? "I love cars and motorcycles, and I love fishing and hunting."
Is there anything else you would like to say? "Thank you to everyone who has had an impact on my life and baseball career. Thank you to all of the Eagle Baseball supporters - you are the best fans in high school baseball. I would like to thank my parents and coaches for always supporting me and trying to make me a better man and baseball player." The Daniel Lewis file: Probable course of study: "I plan on doing my lower division coursework at Paris. More than likely will major in criminal justice. I want to be a firefighter and was advised that criminal justice would aid in an arson investigation position as I get older." Why did you pick Paris JC? "Actually, they were interested in me and my ability to close a game. After researching their team and, of course, talking to my coaches, I knew they were a good team and competed to win. I went for a visit and liked the layout of the campus. It's in a nice town. They have a great baseball field. The coaches are awesome. Coach (Deron) Clark, the head coach emphasized the importance of academics. I was assured that they don't overbook players, and that it would be a thirty man roster and that's it." Note: Coach Clark resigned two weeks ago to become the athletics director at New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs. How do they play to use your talents? "They said they were in need of a closer. I have been in that position for two years at Georgetown. I seem to do well at it. I have found that I really enjoy finishing off the game, so that really appealed to me." What do you feel you will add to the school's program? "Hopefully, me and my teammate Tyler will be able to take some of the 'Never Die' spirit from Georgetown with us and inspire
What motivates you? "I’m a competitor and I don’t want to let my team down. It’s always better to work out with a friend. You compete against each other. It makes you both better. Loving to win and hating to lose." In what areas do you feel you have to improve for the next level? Increase my velocity and maintain good mechanics without losing the ability to locate my pitches. Gain some weight and build more muscle especially in my torso and legs." How has the GHS program prepared you for the next level? "They've made sure I had all the classes I needed to complete my high school work and be accepted by colleges. They have tutorials every morning for classes that you are having trouble with. Coach Foster makes us go to tutorials for any classes that we have less than an 85 in. He told us it would prepare us for the demands of college." What has been the highlight of your career to date? "The road to the 2015 state championship game. We were the underdogs all the way. Sports writers said we couldn't beat this team and that team, but each time we did. The feeling was amazing and going through it with teammates that you love was the best thing ever." What are your longrange goals both personally and athletically? "There has never been a kid who played baseball that didn't dream of playing major league baseball. That is my dream. One of my favorite players, Bryce Harper said, 'If people aren't laughing at your dreams, then your dreams aren't big enough.' I'm realistic and know that's a tough road and if it's not meant to be I just want to play as long as I can. In the mean time I will get a college education and go from there.” Who have been the most important people in your development? "My coaches, coach Foster, coach (Dusty) Brinley, and coach (Ben) Gittinger. What makes you the person you are (your passions, interests, etc.)? "The way my mom and dad have raised me. Is there anything else you would like to say? "I want to thank my coaches from Georgetown High School. They have coached us in many things beyond baseball. Required community service, working with Special Olympics, the challenger games, helping families in need during Christmas, etc., has given me a perspective on things I might not have ever had. They've taught me and us to take responsibility for the things we do. They guided and encouraged leadership. I will take those things with me for the rest of my life. I got to talk and practice with the players and loved it." How do they plan to use your talents? "I think they will be used in the outfield based on the way I read the ball and my speed." What do you feel you will add to the school's program? "The school’s work ethic is phenomenal on the field,
but I believe my excitement will add to that and to have a study group for classes. How would you describe yourself as an athlete? "Competitive, strong, quick, smart and all-in effort, even if the player might not count." What motivates you? "My dad has showed me everything I know about baseball. He was good in high school as well, but always pushes me to be better." In what areas do you feel you have to improve for the next level? What are your longrange goals both personally and athletically? "To become a chiropractor and to play Division1 baseball." Who have been the most important people in your development?" "Coach Brinley, coach Foster, coach Gittinger, coach James from summer ball, and my father, as well as my teammates." What makes you the person you are? "My love for the sport I play and the people I get to know and love playing it. That makes me truly happy and excited to be the person I am." Source: GHS baseball

For the second straight year, the Southwestern University women's tennis program has a nationally-recognized recruiting class, as head coach Billy Porter's incoming student-athletes combined to earn a No. 21 rating, according TennisRecruiting.net. The Pirates were one of only two Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) programs to be listed in the top-25 rankings. Under the direction of Porter, Southwestern completed the 2015-16 campaign with a 21-5 record and a trip to it’s first-ever SCAC Championship Match. Porter also was named SCAC Coach of the Year. Fund Raising Time: SU Director of Athletics Dr. Glada Munt has sent the following letter to sup-
porters of the university's athletics department: "As we approach the end of Southwestern University's fiscal year (June 30th), I am writing to invite all members of the Pirate Athletics family to make a gift to support our student-athletes, coaches, and teams. You can pay it forward in support of today's student-athletes by making a gift to the general Pirate Fund (used to support the general priority needs in the Department of Athletics) or to a sport-specific Pirate Fund (e.g., Pirate Fund - Baseball, Pirate Fund Volleyball, etc.). These gifts are important in helping us improve our facilities and enhancing the competitive experiences of our current student-athletes. "Our student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom and on the field/ court. I am proud to share
that 164 of our student-athletes were named to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Academic Honor Roll. Additionally, we won two conference championships and were among the top teams in almost every sport in the SCAC. We have almost 500 student-athletes, which equates to nearly one-third of the student-body. There is a strong Pirate presence on campus! "Join me by making your gift to support the Pirate Fund. To designate your gift to a specific team, please select "other" when making your online gift and write in the team or sport of your choice. "Thank you for your support! Go Bucs! Go Pirates!

COACHES FROM PAGE B1 coach with tons of experience." Coulson will be filling the position left vacant by the retirement of Brad Gunn. Filling the position left vacant by the retirement of Kyle Gandy, who entered private business, Georgetown's coach Jason Dean has hired Ricky Beaty, the quarterbacks coach at 6A Weatherford, to work with the Eagles' wide receivers. He will also be an assistant in baseball and teach social
studies. Beaty, an all-state quarterback at Wimberley, played on the Texans' Class 3A championship team in 2005. He started his college career as a quarterback at Henderson State (Ark.) and received his degree from Southeastern Oklahoma. He also was a graduate assistant, coaching wide receivers at Hardin-Simmons. Three Georgetown coaching positions still remain open -- girls varsity basketball (to replace Jor-
dan Ramey, the girls head coach at the Glenn, the new Leander ISD school), a volleyball/softball assistant to replace Brittany Hernandez, and a football assistant to replace recently retired Frank Ibarra. GHS volleyball coach Jenny Richardson and Dean indicated Monday that they could be close to having their positions filled. Forbes and Benold have new boys athletics coordinators. Steve Vicars, who retired from the GHS
football staff two years, ago is replacing Todd Johnson at Forbes, and James Hammack has been promoted to replace Coulson at Benold. Hammack, a graduate of Gatesville High School and Texas State, is certified in math, chemistry, life science and physical education. Quarterback Cam Nowell had 63 completions and threw for 10 touchdowns. Defensive leader Chris Matta and sophomore-to-be Devhaun Little had an interception. East View and Georgetown will both be moving into nine-team District 19-5A this fall along with Cedar Park, Rouse, Bastrop, Bastrop Cedar Creek, Elgin, Hutto and Pfluger-
ville Connally. Hutto is the only District 19-5A team to qualify for state.
