Guests enjoyed a cooler-than-usual,

overcast morning at the city's annual Memorial Day ceremony, held at the Georgetown-Williamson County Veterans Memorial Plaza in Sun City.

The ceremony honored the men and women of our armed forces who gave their lives in service to our country. Speakers talked about those sacrifices, as well as the honor deserved by the Gold Star Families of those lost.

The event began with a missing-man flyover by Falcon Flight, a recreational aircraft formation flying team and the ceremony opened with the posting of colors by the Alexander Hamilton Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. They were

followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and playing of the National Anthem. While the music was provided by the 36th Infantry Division Band of the Texas Army National Guard, lyrics were noticeably sung by the 1,000-plus guests who were standing, as they were able, to sing the song proudly.

Veterans of previous and current conflicts were recognized, as well as active duty members and their families. County Judge Bill Gravell and USAF-Ret Tim Timko placed the memorial wreath at the Williamson County wall, honoring the 175 county residents whose names are etched into it.

Mayor Dale Ross and Ted Acheson placed the memorial wreath at the plaza wall, followed by the sounding of taps.

Williamson County Sheriff Robert Chody introduced the guest speaker, Senator Ted Cruz, who mentioned that Georgetown was his one and only appearance for the day; he would be on his way back to Houston to be with his family.

The Senator spoke eloquently and forcefully about the greatness of Texas and the fighting forces who made great sacrifices for the country. He recalled a recent story about a soldier who was able to write home to his father about his walk with God, just prior to being killed in combat.

He also shared the origins of the phrase "There are no atheists in foxholes" and joked that while chaplains have been admonished for using the phrase, because

it make atheists uncomfortable, he replied, "I always thought that was the *job* of a pastor to make atheists uncomfortable."

The Senator added, "The legacy of the heroes we've seen... more than 30,000 Texans have given their lives to defend this nation. That's the legacy of what it means to be a Texan. The next time you're explaining to someone what it means to be a Texan, and since we're Texans, we explain to everyone, what it means. Remember that is part of it—that 30,000 of our brothers and sisters have given their lives defending freedom."

Igo Elementary Grand Opening

2019 National Main Street Accreditation

The City of Georgetown’s Main Street Program has been designated as an accredited Main Street America program for meeting rigorous performance standards set by the National Main Street Center.

Each year, the National Main Street Center and its coordinating program partners announce the list of accredited Main Street America programs in recognition of their exemplary commitment to preservation-based economic development and community revitalization through the Main Street Approach.

“In Georgetown we are lucky to have our incredible board, volunteers and staff help us earn accreditation once again from the National Main Street Center,” Downtown Development Manager Kim McAuliffe said. “It’s through their hard work and dedication that we are able to have such a robust program that is creating economic opportunities in our community.”

The Georgetown Main Street Program is a preservation-driven, economic development organization.

In the past 15 years, the Main Street Façade & Sign

Grant Program has awarded more than $469,000 to 80 downtown businesses and property owners. Most recently in May, the Georgetown Main Street Program presented Lark and Owl Booksellers with a $20,500 Main Street Façade & Sign Grant.

"Since 1981, many Texas communities have participated in the Main Street network and used its preservation-based framework to generate positive economic gains for their local economies and the state,” said Texas Historical Commission Executive Director Mark Wolfe. “These positive strides happen because of local commitment to prioritize historic downtowns.”

Accreditation is awarded to communities that build and maintain revitalization efforts, including fostering strong public-private partnerships, securing an operating budget, tracking programmatic progress, and actively preserving historic buildings.

Main Street America is a program of the nonprofit National Main Street Center, a subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Jarrell ISD is hosting the Grand Opening of the district's second elementary school on Saturday, July 27 at 10 a.m. Students, parents, and community members are invited to join campus staff to celebrate the opening of Igo Elementary (1601 CR 314).

The funding of Igo Elementary is made possible by the passage of the 2017 Bond Package. It will open to students as a Pre-K-5th grade campus in August of 2019. The principal is Jack Wilson.

Igo Elementary is named in memory of the Igo Family, father Larry (age 45), mother Joan (age 46), daughter Audrey (age 17) and twin sons John and Paul (age 15) who were among the 27 residents killed by the F5 tornado that struck the community in May 1997.

GUS Search for General Manager

The City will be reorganizing the management of its water and electric utilities as part of the budget process currently underway.

Earlier this month, longtime General Manager of Utilities Jim Briggs announced he will retire at the end of September. Current Utility Director Glenn Dishong will continue to lead the City’s water utility, and the City will begin the search for a new general manager of electric this summer.

The new general manager of electric will focus on improving the performance of the City’s energy portfolio, developing new measures

to evaluate portfolio performance, as well as clarifying the process for how these measures are shared in meaningful ways with City Council and the public.

This person will also be developing and implementing a comprehensive risk management policy that sets boundaries on risk tolerances, financial obligations, and guides decision-making at all levels of the electric utility. Finally, they will be charged with studying alternative governance structures for the electric utility (e.g., a separate oversight board) and the implications of opting in to the competitive retail market.

Energy charge increase June 1

The City again needs to increase the power cost adjustment, or PCA, on customers’ electric bills.

This follows an initial increase in February that was originally expected to be reduced in September.

The PCA allows the City to compensate for fluctuations in purchased power cost and is one tool to ensure the stability of the electric fund. The City has increased and decreased the PCA several times over the years in response to changing energy prices.

The increased costs for energy is in part tied to energy providers not being able to supply energy to the statewide electric grid.

This phenomena, known as congestion, occurs when there is more energy generated than is needed to meet demand. If the energy is not consumed, the transmission lines “fill up,” breaching their limits, which can cause reliability issues. This

congestion increases the overall cost of energy for the City.

Customers will incur an increase of $0.00625 per kilowatt hour, resulting in a new PCA of $0.02375 per kilowatt hour. This new PCA amount will be assessed on electric consumption starting June 1. The average customer uses 949 kilowatt hours per month and will experience a $5.93 increase on their monthly bill. During the summer, the average use increases to 1,600 kilowatt hours, resulting in an increase to $10 on their monthly bill.

“As we get through this fiscal year, we will revisit the PCA,” City Manager David Morgan said. “Based on the current performance of the City’s energy contracts and uncertainty regarding the energy costs this summer, fully reducing the PCA may not be possible.”

The City has taken steps to address congestion, as well as securing new third-party energy management partners that are able to more rapidly respond and react to changing market conditions and better ensure against market volatility.

Along with bringing on new partners, the city is focusing on internal and external resources to increase the reporting, oversight, and accountability for decision-making related to the energy contracts.

2019 Sunset Movie Series

The City of Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department presents its Sunset Movie Series program throughout the summer, continuing with “Mary Poppins Returns” (PG) on Friday, June 14, in San Gabriel Park. The event will take place on the soccer fields located behind the George-

town Recreation Center, 1003 N. Austin Ave. This is a free community event. The movie starts at sunset, around 8:30 p.m.

Moviegoers are welcome to bring blankets, chairs, and picnics. Come early for free popcorn, to explore the park, and to visit with vendors.

Georgetown Teen Court Takes First in State

A team of three student

attorneys from Georgetown won the teen court state competition held in Bedford last month. Linsey Jensen, Taylor Price, and Matthew McCarthy took first place in the final round on April 13 in which they competed against a team from Allen.

Georgetown Teen Court state competition participants were honored at the Georgetown City Council meeting this week.

The annual state competition in which three-person teams of teen attorneys are scored for their lawyering skills in mock trials is sponsored by the Teen Court Association of Texas.

and attorney Caden Wenzel served as competition coaches for the Georgetown Teen Court attorneys.

A Georgetown Teen Court team won the state competition previously in 2016. This is the eighth year that Georgetown has sent a team to participate in the teen court state competition.

Georgetown Teen Court is a program of the City of Georgetown Municipal Court. High school students age 13 to 18 serve as attorneys, jury members, and defendants in the program, which is a real court for traffic tickets and other misdemeanor offenses. The program started more than 25 years ago.

Completion of

The City celebrated the completion of all

the recent improvements to the Georgetown Municipal Airport with a ribbon cutting May 31at the Airport Terminal.

The most recently completed work includes the rehabilitation of Runway 18-36, the airport’s main north-south runway. Other improvements to the airport include the construction of a parallel north-south taxiway, lighting upgrades, and the relocation of the fuel storage tanks to above-ground.

Mayor Dale Ross explained all of the renovations and improvements are in keeping with the most up-to-date safety requirements and compliance with the Federal Aviation Administration. "All of these changes are related to what is safer for our airport. We are simply following the best practices of the FAA. Above-ground fuel tanks are safer than those below and reinforced runways are safer for aircraft. I want to assure our residents that these changes are not related to, nor do we have any plans to expand the airport."

The guest speaker was Buz Landry, who, as a young boy—and thanks to a cow— decided he wanted to be an aviator, so he was present at the ribbon cutting when the airport first opened in 1945.

The Landry family owned a ranch nearby and, when he was 8, Buz had a tussle with a cow, which drove him through a fence to a rather unpleasant (and messy) landing in the corral. "I opened my eyes, bleeding, filthy and dirty and with a torn shirt, I saw an airplane heading to the airport. That old boy is smart; he knows what he is doing, he is probably cool and he is definitely clean. At that moment I decided I wanted to be a pilot." He began working at the airport at 13 for $.30/hour and soloed his first airplane at 16. He flew as a cropduster because his mother told him, "Don't fly too high!" He retired from aviation at 35 and has continued to serve Georgetown as a Realtor and concrete specialist. He welcomes inquiries about any airport history from 1940 to 2000.

Juvenile Services Honors Gattis The Williamson County

Juvenile Services staff and Board honored retired County Judge Dan Gattis in April with a special luncheon and award ceremony.

Executive Director Scott Matthew presented Judge Gattis with his portrait, which will hang in the main hallway alongside previous Chiefs, Board Members and Division Directors. Matthew said, "He was always a huge advocate. He has always taken care of this job and publicly supported our mission and our work.

We were fortunate to have Judge Gattis and Director Charly Skaggs on our board during so many times when we were struggling. They both helped us grow and continue our mission. It is amazing to see the kind of people who are committed to juvenile services in this county and Judge Gattis is one of the best."

Board Chair Judge Stacey Mathews addressed the Judge directly; "You and the commissioners have been phenomenal to us and we have a lot to be thankful for; sometimes we don't say it enough. It is awesome to see when I do a presentation and I can talk about how great Williamson County is. The reason is because we stand on the shoulders of Charly Skaggs and Judge Gattis and all

who served before us. We are able to do the work we do because of them."

Scott Matthew was also honored for his re-appointment to the Texas Juvenile Justice Board for six years.

He is the only remaining appointee of the Perry administration and was recently chosen by Governor Abbott to continue providing guidance and program support across the state.

2019 Congressional Art Winners

announced the winners of the 2019 Congressional Art Competition at a reception celebrating all of the participants in Round Rock campus over the weekend. Noah Hanson from Thrall High School was awarded Best in Show for his artwork entitled “Main Street Memories.”

“Thank you to all of the talented students who participated in the 2019 Congressional Art Competition. With more than 120 outstanding submissions, our judges certainly had their work cut out for them. I look forward to Noah’s visit to D.C., and having his artwork represent our community in Washington. Congratulations to all of the artists from District 31, these young men and women have a lot to be proud of,” Congressman Carter said.

Noah will receive complimentary airfare to Washington, DC and lodging to attend the Congressional Art Competition Winners Reception at the United States Capitol with Rep. Carter in June. Noah’s artwork will hang in the Capitol for one year.

Many of the participants’ artwork will be on display at the Texas State University Round Rock Campus until May 20.

Navy JROTC Unit for Georgetown ISD, announced that four senior cadets were recently selected to receive fouryear NROTC scholarships at select universities across the nation. These scholarships provide tuition, room and board, fees, books, uniforms and a monthly cash stipend to young men and women who aspire to become U.S. Navy Officers.

Cadet David Cueva (EVHS), currently the Executive Officer of Liberty Battalion and Commander of the Armed Drill Team, will be attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida where he plans to become an Aerospace Engineer. After graduation and commissioning into the Navy, David wants to attend flight school and become a Navy pilot.

Cadet Lilly Phillips (GHS), Command Master

Chief of Liberty Battalion and senior member of the Armed Drill Team, will be attending Norwich University in Vermont where she plans to study Electrical Engineering. After graduation and commissioning, Lilly will attend Surface Warfare Officers School in Newport, Rhode Island and become a shipboard officer.

Cadet Jessica Del Real (EVHS), Administrative Officer of Liberty Battalion and Commander of the Physical Training Team, will be attending Regent University in Virginia Beach to study Computer Science on a Navy Preparatory and NROTC Scholarship. She also plans to attend Surface Warfare Officers School and become a shipboard officer.

Cadet Riley Prater (EVHS), a senior member of the Liberty Battalion Academics Team, will be attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in

Florida to study Aerospace engineering. Following graduation and commissioning, Riley plans to attend flight school and become a Navy pilot.

“We are incredibly proud of these young men and women on their awards,” said Captain Craig Anthony. “The Navy’s investment in these cadets through this very competitive process is a testament to the academic quality of these students and their commitment to serving their country.”

The Navy awarded 1,300 officer scholarships this year with more than 23,000 students applying nationwide.

“It’s incredible that four of those scholarships ended up in the hands of GISD students,” Anthony said.

Each scholarship is worth up to $200,000.

These students were recognized on Wednesday, May 29 during a special luncheon in Georgetown.

GISD Teachers of the Year

Each year, GISD campuses select a

teacher that embodies the GISD vision and mission. This spring, each GISD campus was invited to select a teacher of the year using the Texas Teacher of the Year guidelines set by the Texas Association of School Administrators. Since 1969, the Texas Teacher of the Year (TOY) Program has honored excellence in classroom education and provided a forum to showcase many outstanding educators whose efforts and example have inspired their students, their colleagues, and the communities they serve.

GISD nominations were reviewed by a committee and a single winner was selected for both the elementary and secondary levels. SIT-REP: REPRESENTATIVE TERRY WILSON On Saturday, May 25, The Texas

House of Representatives and The Texas Senate reached an agreement on the School Finance Reform bill, House Bill 3 (HB3).

The agreement came out of the work done by the legislature over the last few sessions, almost a decade of research and attempts at reform.

HB 3 tackles the root cause of most school finance issues.

Rulings from the Texas Supreme Court have placed restrictions on how different the property tax burden can be between any two districts. When past legislatures shifted the burden of funding schools more toward local school districts, those court-defined limitations required more and more workarounds in order to keep the system constitutional, making the system overly complex and burdensome.

By shifting the burden off of local property taxes and appropriating the money from state funds instead, HB 3 frees the legislature to make long needed changes.

Rather than just listing the changes, let’s take a look at how HB3 will affect you.

Parents of Public-School Students Putting more money into education doesn’t help if it isn’t tied to specific, accountable initiatives

focused on raising the quality of the education our students receive. HB3 focuses new formula-funding into the places where it can do the most good overall, and where it can plant seed for future growth.

Full day Pre-K for low income students – more than just day-care, Pre-K helps overcome the gaps that develop between socio-economic groups in early age and give every student a firm foundation to get started in their education.

Dyslexia identification program – Preventing students with dyslexia from getting left behind in the system. Identifying dyslexia early allows teachers to better adjust for a student’s needs and give them the tools for success.

Incentives for schools to prepare students for college, vocational, & military readiness, allowing every student to prepare for the path that unlocks their passion.

• Dual language programs for better future workforce opportunities • Optional extended-year summer programs for students to prevent backslide • “Do Not Hire” registry to protect students from teachers who harm students • Improves transportation so rural families can more easily and reliably get kids to school

• Supports programs for underserved students, special education, dropouts, and residential treatment facilities.

Home / Business Owner:

Local school districts share the state’s responsibility for providing for education by charging property taxes. HB 3 changes the formulas for how a school district’s funding level is calculated and lessens the burden on property taxes as the state picks up more of the share of education finance.

Home and business owners who pay property taxes can expect to see the following effects as a result of these changes.

• Property taxes reduced by an average of 8¢ per $100 of property value in 2020 and 13¢ in 2021 • Property tax rates reduced by an additional 2.5% in 2021 • Fewer increases in property tax rates, as school districts must prove they are using existing resources responsibly in order to request an election to increase their property tax rate.

• The larger state share will even out the tax burden across the state, reducing “Robin Hood” payments by 47% ($3.6 Billion) and allowing more local tax dollars to stay local.

Rising appraisal values will no longer bring a higher tax bill, as school districts will reduce their rates to adjust for the increasing

value of existing properties that they already tax.

Teachers & Retired Teachers

Investing in education isn’t just about money, it’s also about investing our trust and respect in those who do the educating. For educators, HB 3 will offer significant changes that compensate them like professionals and provides for a better long-term retirement plan.

• Across the board increases in minimum teacher salary schedule.

• Increased contributions to the Teacher Retirement Fund from both state funds and current employees • $2 billion in dynamic pay raises for teachers, librarians, counselors, and nurses.

• $4,000 raise, minus the portion that goes toward TRS • $140 million for incentive pay programs based on performance, experience, and merit.

• $6 million in funding for professional development and mentoring programs for new teachers.

• $30 million per year for an extended-year program that rewards teachers who volunteer to work an additional 30 days in the summer.

• Combined with SB 12, retired teachers will see a 13th check of up to $2,000.

• Teacher Retirement Fund stabilized and secured immediately, with all unfunded liabilities paid off within 29 years.

We often overestimate what can be done in the short term, but underestimate what can happen in the long term. The changes are the result of almost a decade of work by hundreds of legislators across the state, and the quality of that work has shown through.

As we go through the summer vacation and prepare for school to start again, we can do so knowing that every public school student in Texas will be better off for this bill having passed.

I appreciate the TVLand channel and memories of my own childhood. Most specifically, all the shows I watched as a kid because they were what my dad watched. Since there was only one television in the house (What?! Said all the millennials in the world), everyone basically watched

whatever Dad watched.

That also explains why I like a few typically non-female-demographic things like Star Trek, Barney Miller, Sanford & Son, and Muhammad Ali. My dad was predominantly Archie Bunker; Daniel Boone outdoors, Hawkeye Pierce some days, with a splash of George Carlin and a little John Wayne now and then. Definitely not a Mike Brady.

When we were in trouble there were no sit-on-thecouch-to-share-feelings episodes. Just plain old runfor-your-life moments.

Those were good days and good TV. I liked Andy Griffith and thought Barney was funny but now that I’m older and I’m a parent, I

The Last Word have a new appreciation for Andy’s kindness, wisdom and the way he always defused the insanity around him without taking credit for it.

One episode in Season 3, Opie got his feelings hurt because Andy had a new girlfriend and he was worried that his Pa wouldn’t like him as much someday. What Pa said stuck in my head word for word because of it’s brevity and profoundness.

“I’m gon’ tell you somethin’ Ope, and I want you to listen real carefully. You’re my young’un. And I love you more than anything or anybody in the whole world. And nothin' or nobody can ever change that.

You know it’s hard for me to tell you just how much you do mean to me cause you’re a part of me. Sometime I

might get married again.

It will be somebody like a lot, somebody I love. But nothin’ or nobody will ever change things between me and you because you’re my son and we’re buddies.”

Simple as that. You are my own and a part of me.

You didn’t earn my love and affection because you didn’t have to, but they are there for you until I’m gone. I know it’s just a bunch of TV writers and a script but I get choked up every time I see that one.

Even more so than the time Opie had to give up his milk money to a bully and Andy told him to stand his ground without letting on that he knew his son was being mistreated.

7 school, presumably to be punched in the eye, is a true sense of a Father, loving his young’un enough to let him be a man, even if he’s only 6. Opie was so proud of his black eye and they shared a great moment.

I know life is not like TV but I like to think that dads really do love their kids like that, even if they can’t always show it. You know, because they’re big strong men who merely wipe dust out of their eyes when they have an emotion.

Today, I know a lot of Andy Taylors around here.

People who don't divide their love among family; they multiply it.

My own dad has been gone more than half my life and I’m nearly as old as he was when he passed away. Kind of shocking to think of that particular data.

And while I feel confident I can love and protect my little boy like a bear and a good soldier, I hope he will always good men to look up to like I did.

Who else is going to share those priceless, “Don’t tell your mother we did this!” moments, or slip a $20 bill in a handshake before a date or a trip?

Well, it was a 20 in my day, maybe my Son will get a $50. Dads are great to share the first sip of beer, the first worm on a hook, the first driving lesson, the first “girls/boys suck” conversation, and that last minute getaway option (just in case) right before the wedding.

Dads, enjoy your special day, the comfy chair, the big piece of chicken and sole control of the remote.

Georgetown Just outside historic George-

town is a nondescript building that is home to something so tremendous and, literally, oneof-a-kind, Georgetown-ians should be saving space on Facebook to brag about it.

In that building is Fathom Academy, founded and run by Charles Barton Bollfrass. This trailblazing facility provides indoor swift-water rescue training, year round, for law enforcement and emergency management, as well as a set for Hollywood movies.

As a former Navy EOD diver, Barton is an expert on "worst possible scenarios" and the dangers they pose to professionals. The mission of Fathom Academy is to prepare rescue teams for what to expect in a flood and, ultimately, reduce the 31 percent swift water rescuer fatality rate nationwide. "We have federal, state, movie producers and other municipalities looking for a safer and cleaner way to train in the water. We can create a real-world flood environment that is safe, clean and repeatable, so teams can train to fail."

Barton explains; training to fail allows a specialist to test and fail without causing harm. Knowing 99 ways that don't work is as important as knowing one that will.

The value of his indoor facility includes pumps that can simulate three-knot water speed with white caps, but will not sweep a rescuer 'downstream' further than the end of the pool. Chlorinated water means no rainwater— which, in nature, contains flesh-eating bacteria, so even a scratch underwater runs the risk of serious infection.

Barton says two rescuers die each year from a water-borne infection.

His tanks are also heated to allow teams to train longer and focus on maneuvers. Not only do his pumps provide the "swift" water, the room also has wind fans, thunder, sirens, and a spotlight to simulate a helicopter hovering overhead, which can be blinding. He can place objects in the pool to simulate uneven underwater terrain, and accustom rescuers to expecting the unexpected.

"If you've only trained in a lake on a sunny day (because it's difficult and dangerous to do otherwise) being asked, then, to execute maneuvers in a raging river, during a nighttime storm, with trees and debris coming at you underwater, choppers flying, and a victim clawing at you in a panic... is like being pushed off a building and being asked to fly, but make a cake, and talk on the phone while you're doing it."

His curriculum, developed in collaboration with Dr. Anita

Greenberg, has been proven in the field, and in May 2017 they received the best possible review of the course, which Barton says made it all worthwhile. A Director in Georgia reported that for the first time in a flood situation, his entire team came home safely, thanks to Fathom training.

Fathom buys automobiles from Facebook or CraigsList, drains them completely, to prevent water contamination, and allows teams to tear them up. While speaking to City Insider, he was supervising a proprietary team using Jaws of LifeÂŽ to remove mannequins from vehicles nearly submerged.

The biggest challenge Barton faces is getting the word out to the people he believes need this training most. "First responders tend to only listen to each other, so when today's team pushes out their video and photos, they will be helping us get the word out that we are here. We are safe, controlled, and allow people to be in the moment, mentally, so they can acquire automaticity in a crisis. We can't trust the weather in Texas to give us just enough rain at the

right time, or not too much, to practice often enough in a tiny little window of time."

Fathom is the only facility of its kind in the world and, to date, they have trained people from Hawaii to Georgia, including the FBI. Courses can be completed in a day and at the end of the day, they put in a new car, reset the tank and no matter the weather outside, they can jump "back to 1".

You see, Barton also spent ten years as a movie producer; he even won the SXSW festival in 2008; so while he knows a lot about the reality and dangers associated with underwater operations, as a movie-maker, he knows how to re-create it perfectly for the sake and safety of others.

And before you start to think this amazing facility doesn't mean much to an average citizen, he is considering, in the future, having open house days during which civilian groups or individuals can get in the car and experience the sensation of being in a flood. Even a few moments of recognition or familiarity, in a panic situation, could be enough to save your own life.

Census: Georgetown 7th Fastest-growing City in U.S.

Last month, the U.S.

Census Bureau released population estimates showing that Georgetown is ranked seventh on the list of fastest-growing cities in the country with a population of more than 50,000.

Georgetown’s growth rate was 5.2 percent from July 1, 2017, through July 1, 2018, resulting in a population estimate of 74,180.

Now I promise, we’re not trying to be the fastest-growing city in the U.S. Frankly, people choose Georgetown because we are a safe city with a high-quality of life, great parks, an award-winning library, a low tax rate, and the Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas. We recognize what a great place Georgetown is, and others recognize it, too.

Certainly one reason we are attracting so many people is that Georgetown is well-positioned in a fast-growing metro area.

We are working to make the most of opportunities to bring high-quality employers to our city, while preserving Georgetown’s authentic charm and character.

We’re fortunate to have like-minded partners such as Southwestern University, Georgetown ISD, Williamson County, St. David’s, and Sun City, too.

Georgetown was the sixth fastest-growing city in the U.S. on the list released last year by the Census. In 2017, Georgetown was the fifth fastest-growing city in the U.S., the fastest in 2016, and the second fastest in 2015. Our population was 47,400 in the 2010 census.

According to the Census estimate, Georgetown added 26,780 residents with a growth rate of 56.5 percent from 2010 to 2018.

The addition of new residents and businesses does help the City maintain one of the lowest tax rates in the region. This growth helps fund the infrastructure

needed to prepare for our residents.

In fact, we are on pace to complete a decade’s worth of voter approved road bonds in just seven years.

We’re kidding ourselves if we think we can stop growth. According to the Texas Demographic Center, the Austin region is expected to more than double in size by the year 2050. Central Texas will go from 2 million in population to 5 million.

What is Georgetown doing to prepare for the growth we know is coming?

In the summer of 2016, the Economic Development Department conducted a workforce analysis to determine the supply, demand, and gap of workers and skill sets.

According to current projections, five industry clusters will account for 75 percent of all new jobs.

Those five areas are healthcare, retail, electronics, entertainment, and construction.

These projections are all

consistent with the recent investments we’ve seen in Georgetown. These are some of the projects planned or underway which each can be seen as the result of our growing population: • Wolf Crossing – a 600,000-square-foot retail development at the southeast corner of Interstate 35 and University Avenue along the San Gabriel River, with stores opening the end of this year • Sedro Crossing – a 170,000-square-foot speculative professional office development on Williams Drive currently under construction • Westinghouse Road

Corporate Center – a 95,000-square-foot speculative flex development over five buildings on Westinghouse Road • Inner Vision – a speculative flex development expanding with an additional 22,000 square feet currently under construction on SE Inner Loop • Wolf Lakes Village – a 164-acre, master-planned development with office, retail, and residential elements on the northwest corner of I-35 and University Avenue with plans to break ground on the first phase later this year All of these developments, along with new

infill projects in our historic downtown, are evidence of Georgetown’s growing population and vibrant economy.

These types of investments and partnerships are what allow us to protect and maintain the safe, smalltown feel that our residents expect us to preserve. City Council is committed to preserving Georgetown’s unique charm and character - from the San Gabriel River, to its great school district and Southwestern University, to having the Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas – because these are the reasons why people choose to make Georgetown their home.

glimpse of master musicians at work and hopefully become fans of Bach."

Everyone always says it, but she brightened up the room when she walked in. She was my coach and would always goof around with us but always got us back around to being serious. I didn’t realize it at the time but she taught us as much about life lessons as volleyball and always made sure we were having fun. I keep a purple ribbon on me or in my bag and she will always be in everyone’s heart. This is about celebrating her life. She still coached us after her diagnosis and wouldn’t take a day off because that’s how much she wanted to be here for us.”

One of the most common discussions I have with clients about their dogs involves food. There are hundreds of dog food options available—think multiple aisles just for dog food at pet stores. The Internet is full of information about different food choices, and Internet *specialists* give guidance to the masses about what dogs should (and shouldn’t) eat. Gluten free, grain free, raw food, vegan, organic,

natural food—the list goes on, and there are passionate arguments for each online.

Clients are often surprised when I tell them that some grain-free diets have been linked to heart disease in dogs.

UC Davis found grain-free diets containing legumes like peas, pea components, lentils, white potatoes, sweet potatoes can lead to Dilated Cardiomyopathy or DCM. DCM is a heart muscle disorder where the heart is too weak to pump properly and the chambers of the heart enlarge. This can be a fatal dietary complication that is totally preventable with the right food.

After a quick online search for “best dog food diet” or “best dog food” I found a few sites that recommended a specific “Natural Grain Free” dog food diet with these exact ingredients in them. If this diet is fed to your dog without any other foods supplemented, it would be at risk for developing DCM. The FDA partnered with US Davis to put out an alert to inform the public about the risks posed by these foods, the link is here FDA.gov/ AnimalVeterinary/NewsEvents/ CVMUpdates/ucm613305.htm.

Another diet that has become popular is the raw food diet, or Bones and Raw Food Diet (BARF). Bones can become stuck in the stomach or perforate intestine causing a surgical emergency.

Uncooked, the meat can be contaminated with bacteria that cause intestinal disease in the dog, or in the people who handle the food.

I frequently see marketing on the Internet that suggests this type of diet is better for dogs, arguing that since dogs came from wolves, and therefore returning to a more natural, raw diet will lead to fewer health problems, healthier weight, and a longer life.

While that marketing is effective because we know dogs came from wolves and that wolves eat raw foods in the wild, it is a fallacy to think that this diet will help your dog. Dogs have been do-

mesticated for thousands of years and have evolved to depend on what people feed them. Your chihuahua is pretty far removed from the wolves of the Northern Rockies, so don’t feed him like he is a wolf.

As consumers, we are subjected to a constant barrage of advertisements to buy more stuff. Marketing firms spend all their time and resources figuring out how to use our current knowledge against us to encourage us to buy a certain product.

DON’T FEED A DOG BARF BARF diets are not a healthy option for your dog, and they can make you sick as well when you handle them.

Don’t feed a dog BARF. Grain-Free diets can cause heart disease; grain is actually a good source of nutrition, so don’t feed grain-free. Feed your dog a well-balanced diet that is appropriate for its life-stage. High quality foods are manufactured in their own facility; the company practices strict quality control measures; employs a board-certified veterinary nutritionist; and performs third-party, double-blind analysis of their foods.

Many foods are co-packaged—made by several different manufacturers and do not practice food recalls. There are just a handful of companies that adhere to higher standards, and a good vet can guide you through them. The best advice for anyone concerned about their dog’s food is to talk to their vet during their next annual exam.

Warriors on the Home Front: Father's Day Free Movie "Courageous"

JP3 Evelyn McLean wants to make

warriors on the home front by encouraging "Courageous" parenting. To do this, she has partnered with Jacob Schulman of City Lights Theaters to provide free showings of the 2011 motion picture on Father's Day, and perhaps later, to share a cinematic focus on fatherhood and importance the presence of a father can play in a child’s life.

Mr. Schulman has generously provided his largest theater at the Wolf Ranch Parkway Cinema for two showings on June 16—1:00pm and 7:00pm—and there are just under 600 tickets available for pick up at JP3 at 100 Wilco Way in Georgetown.

As if it weren't enough that he is showing the movie for free, he is pre-empting blockbuster showings of Godzilla to do so, and even posed the possibility of replacing a Toy Story 4 showing if there is a large enough response on the first weekend.

"This is about making a difference; not a buck. The four pillars of the Schulman theater group are Family, Community, History, and Entertainment," Schulman says. "Being a parent is my passion and

making an impact with my own and others' kids is a privilege, so we are happy to be able to facilitate this special Father's Day event. Of all the movies about family, [Courageous] is probably my favorite, especially the inspirational closing speech."

Judge McLean brainstormed the idea after a check of her docket showed a high number of truancy cases since January 1.

"I was thinking about a friend mourning the loss of his own son and I sent him a gift he could use to spend special time with his other children. It just seemed like a natural next step to share that same experience with all parents. As a JP, I see everything from truancy, parents who want to relinquish parental rights, to youth suicide; so many hurting families. I see families that are father-absent and I am striving to find ways to ignite the spark to get or keep parents off the sidelines."

McLean assures us, however, that the movie is an encouragement for any parent, regardless of individual family dynamics.

"The job of parenting is full, with myriad challenges and going back to Scripture helps people remember what to do as a

father, mother or spouse and our community will be better for it."

Schulman was so inspired by Judge McLean's idea, he has licensed the movie for all six Schulman locations in Texas and is developing a full-scale family event around the movie. "We will have gift bags for each child, with gift cards donated by Whataburger, Chick-fil-a, Sonic, 7-11, Williamson County Sheriff's Department, and Georgetown Fire and Police Departments. We will also have a photo booth and games for overflow crowds to spend time together even if they can't get in to the see movie right away."

Schulman believes parenting can be a difficult subject to talk about, especially for men who feel like they can't admit they may have a shortcoming. But, as the fifth generation in the Schulman family movie business, his people have been promoting, experiencing and talking about movies since 1908, and family has always been a big part of everything they do. "This movie helped me understand the importance of going back to scripture and I wanted to be a better dad as a result."

He defers any credit, however, to Judge McLean for her idea and is happy to help deliver the message. Judge McLean says, "This is about helping solve problems rather than merely punishing offenses."

I also plan to send letters across my precinct to educate and inform families about the problems and consequences of truancy, which can affect parents as well as students. My truancy program will include a parenting component that will deal with many juvenile issues and hopefully support a healthy family dynamic."
