Georgetown is “Happening”

The “Green in ‘2017” strategy

continues to put Georgetown in the national spotlight.

In June, Mayor Ross’ renewable energy editorial was published in Time magazine, and last week documentary film maker James Redford (Yes, he’s Robert’s son) made Georgetown a stop on his nationwide tour in the production of his latest project called “Happening,” which takes an entertaining look at the grassroots emergence of America’s clean energy economy.

Georgetown will be only the second city in the U.S. to use 100 percent renewable energy, effective January 1, 2017. The first was Burlington, Vermont, but for a city in an oil-rich red state like Texas, it is practically... progressive.

Mayor Ross explained in the film that there are some who have voiced their concerns with the change, but he has said emphatically, over many interviews, “Our city government always makes an effort to put aside national or partisan politics and do only what is best for the citizens we serve in Georgetown.”

The film crew spent two days in town. Production should take about six months, and the film is expected to garner at least one million viewers when it airs on HBO. Redford anticipates a premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, and is hopeful the timing may work out to put on a red carpet event during the SouthBy-Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, as well.

Georgetown’s First Lady, Mickie Ross, who is also the director of the Williamson Museum took part in the film tour and she regaled the rich history of our city, as well as the charm of its people. Mayor Ross calls it “another chapter in a year of great national visibility and promotion for our city.”

Williamson County Issues Burn Ban

On Tuesday, August 4, 2015, the Williamson County Commissioners Court issued a burn ban not to exceed 90 days. The County Judge was given the authority to lift the burn ban during this time if conditions improve. A person violates this order by burning any combustible material outside of an enclosure that serves to contain all flames and/or sparks, or orders such burning by others. The burn ban prohibits the burning of household yard waste, such as leaves, grass, brush and other yard trimmings. It also prohibits burning to clear land of trees, stumps, shrubbery, or other natural vegetation.

This order may be enforced by any duly-commissioned peace officer. It is a Class C Misdemeanor and is punishable by a fine up to $500.

This exciting and fun-filled event allows businesses and organizations to highlight their products and services directly to over 1,500 GISD teachers and staff. The event will be held in the cafeteria of Georgetown High School located at 2211 North Austin Avenue.

Georgetown ISD’s auxiliary staff are invited to attend 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.; bus drivers, maintenance and custodial employees, food service personnel, and others. The second session will be 10:30 a.m. until noon for campus teachers, instructional staff, and administrators.

Wise Water Use Request to Customers

The City of Georgetown is making a special request to water customers to limit unnecessary outdoor water use through August 17.

With temperatures forecast to be above 100 degrees in that time period, the utility expects peak demand on the water treatment and distribution system.

This week, Georgetown Utility Systems crews repaired a motor to a highservice booster pump at the water treatment plant on the south end of Georgetown. This is indicative of the effect of high demand on mechanical equipment from the sustained extreme heat. Reducing unnecessary outdoor water use can help to ensure that the system can continue to meet peak demand during this period of very hot weather.

• For homeowners with automatic irrigation systems, consider decreasing the time for each watering zone by three to five minutes.

Trinity Students’ Success in Art Up! Graduation and Gallery Show Trinity students enjoying the culmination of their Art Up! series with counselor/teacher Lynn Kessel (far right)

In our July 28 edition we introduced you to the students in the art program at the Juvenile Justice Center.

Their program concluded, they showed off their pieces and enjoyed commencement exercises with proud family and friends. Counselor Lynn Kessel provided a report from the big day.

show event was a success all the way around. Six girls from the residential treatment program TRINITY participated in this 4 week program, and it culminated in a special event held Thursday evening, July 30. The girls had the opportunity to dress up in preparation for the event, and all families attended to see their daughters’ artwork and hear their speeches.

The ceremonies started with a brief welcome and speech by Lynn Kessel, Mental Health Coordinator at Williamson County Juvenile Services and founder of the Art Up! Program.

Then, each young woman got up to share a speech about her experience in this program. After an announcement of the judging results and presenting the awards, the girls were able to spend quality time with their families.

“Being in Art Up! has

taught me to try new things even when it isn’t going the way I wanted, to never give up or start trying.” ~ Kelsey, age 16.

“I loved having Art Up! because it helped me build my self-esteem and it showed me how to have more confidence in myself.” ~ Sha’Corah, age 13.

“I have always been the type of person to think I’m not good enough. I never thought I was good at art either and when I went to Art Up! there was a big struggle, but I made it through. I love all the art I did in the Art Up! Program, I honestly blew myself away by looking at all the amazing art I never thought I could do. It’s sad to think of all the times I put myself down but through this program, I have truly seen all the potential I have, not just in art, but in myself.” ~ Bethany, age 17 “….I felt a bit intimidated by the other girls’ amazing art, but learned that it really doesn’t matter who’s the best, it just matters how you express yourself and how it makes you feel…….I got to express how my day or my past was through my art….” ~ Tori, age 16.

“…sometimes the hardest challenge [was]…when I would come in to the art room carrying all this extra baggage…..I learned I couldn’t get my artistic side to come out when I was in a funk.” ~ Claudia, age 17 “Thank you ‘Art’ for pulling me out of the deep hole of darkness and building my creativity to be free inside the walls of my mind that I was trapped in.” ~ Audreanna, age 16 Kessel spoke of the dichotomy between the safe environment for creativity in the classroom and the stark reality of the judging process. “Putting something on canvas can be a vulnerable act because art comes from within. This is the fork in the road for artists. You either choose to remain sensitive to what anyone else says about your work….or you can choose

to accept that there will be people and galleries and judges who may not choose your work.”

Kessel says a strong artist, and a strong individual, can put themselves out there in their artwork, and not worry about what people say. And what a great life lesson. I would say that each of these ladies has grown toward being the stronger type of artist….and individual.”

Assistant Chief Matt Smith said “It was great to see culmination of all the work that went into the event and it touched everyone who was there. From family to staff, there were a lot of tears and it was clear how important this was to each of them.”

Smith says every student had family there, and he could tell they were seeing daughters and sisters in a whole new light.

Every student’s art was recognized and all be displayed in the lobby. Smith says they are still looking to expand the program and donors can contact Lynn Kessel for information. “All of our programs are funded through grants and donations. Tax dollars pay only for the safety and security of the facility, so we are always looking for support from the community for greater success in therapy through art and recreation.”

Jarrell Student Awarded “Go Texan” Scholarship

GRIDIRON GOLD FOR GIRLS Southwestern Football

Coach Joe Austin provided a very entertaining public service to Georgetown sports fans last week.

The Palace Theater in the square was transformed into an education forum for people (mostly women) wishing to learn or understand more about football.

This was a personal project for the Coach because, he says, there are so many football events geared toward men, and the Coach and his wife, Marissa, wanted to do something fun for everyone. On the heels of the NFL’s hiring of its first female coach, it was timely and enjoyable.

With about 40 RSVPs, including a half-dozen men, Austin used diagrams, films, simple language and a lot of humor to explain why “it’s not just 11 guys running into each other as fast as they can.”

He started out simply; introducing player positions, and made sure to point out, “That guy in the mid-

dle—he’s a Center.

When you’re watching TV with a bunch of people around, don’t say ‘the hiker’; you’re going to out yourself!”

Within 30 minutes there were women in the audience gleefully calling out “That’s a 4-3 defensive front, cover 2!” and highfiving each other over their newly expert grasp of what goes on in the game.

Although the room was full of folks long past high school, there was still a giggle over the tight ends, and Austin went right with it, describing players that looked like loose ends but that’s not what they are called, and split ends have nothing to do with hair.

He went over offense and defense roles, referee roles (did you know it’s not an official touchdown until the official in the

all-white hat puts his arms up?), working the chains, what all those lines on the field mean, and even what a coaching staff does with the 90 percent of their lives not spent on the field.

If you think you know football, there is still a lot to learn from a coach of Austin’s caliber. As a bonus, he performed with

all the patience and without the condescension we might have experienced when we asked our dads or boyfriends to tell us what was going on—without waiting for the commercial.

A definite touchdown of an evening; great sports, snacks, beverages, and laughs. Austin plans a full replay next year before the season starts. Watch for the announcement, hustle— don’t walk—to get your tickets for a rare and lively pep talk with the Coach.

Family Law Attorney Running for 395th

Attorney Terence Davis

believes, after prayerful consideration, that this is the right time and place for his campaign to be the next family judge of the 395th District Court.

With 15 years of legal experience, primarily in family law, as well as civil litigation and personal injury, he appreciates that “the 395th court deals with the most private and personal topic of all; families.

Voters deserve a judge who is highly qualified and experienced in family law, with a proven track record of helping families in Williamson County, involved in the community, and who will bring his integrity to the courthouse.”

In law school, Davis says he was honored to serve as a Constitutional and Contract Law tutor, earned first place in the St. Mary’s Law School Moot Court Competition, and worked in the Civil Justice Clinic during his 3rd year of law school helping people who couldn’t afford attorneys.

He graduated in the top 10 percent of his class and ultimately accepted an associate position at Fulbright & Jaworski, a national law

firm. In 2014, he took a specialization exam to become one of only eight board-certified family law attorneys in Williamson County, and currently serves as General Counsel for the Williamson County Republican Party.

Davis has both a personal and professional understanding of how devastating a divorce can be on a child and the family. As a child of divorced parents, he can understand the viewpoint of children. As a professional, he can appreciate the significance a quality judge can play in a family court.

Above all, his life experiences helped him develop his faith relationship and his God first mentality.

“My priorities are God, family and community. I say God first because He is the foundation and the rest must develop from there.

Family second because we need God’s strength and guidance to love more like He intended. I don’t want to see my family as a reflection of me, but of Him. Then comes community; which is an expression of our faith in how we interact with others. Working and living in our community is our opportunity to share God’s blessings.”

Davis credits many people who were instrumental in his life. “There are those who plant seeds, those who water them, and then those who nurture them. My wonderful mother planted a seed of faith by giving me my first Bible. Then there are my pastors and other families at the Journey Bible Fellowship Church

who watered my faith.

Finally, there is my service as a Children’s Leader with Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) which has provided the sunshine and nurturing to help me grow as a leader.

Having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ in our broken world is the key. It’s through our faith and reliance on God that He prepares us to do His work.”

Davis has been married 19 years to his wife, Romy, and they have two daughters together. He says they have always dedicated themselves and their time to cherish their marriage.

“When I started law school I had a wife and ten-month

old daughter. When I finished I was a father of two. I knew of many other law students who couldn’t make it work because law school is very demanding.

But we both turned to God, invested in each other, and made time to just laugh together.”

Davis believes it is paramount that the 395th have a judge with extensive experience in family law and a judicial temperament to handle its many highs and lows. “I have a solid understanding of the family code, personal and professional experience with family court, and I will be ready for the bench on day one.”

Cutting the Ribbon for the New Carver Colts

With the temperature

hovering around 194 degrees (School Board Trustee Andy Webb joked) July 28, a very large and happy crowd gathered at the entrance to the new Carver Elementary to officially open the doors to the public. Schools normally wait for an open house, but GISD is so proud of the final product and pleased with community support that they opened the doors to let everyone see what was inside the massive new

building and how well the space was appointed.

The program was cut short to allow guests to get inside to the cool air and refreshments, but there was high praise from Superintendent Dr. Fred Brent, more from Mr. Webb, and glowing remarks from Carver’s principal, Nancy Bottlinger.

Dr. Brent told the crowd, “When you trust us with your funds, it matters. We are going to do all we can to honor that commitment

to you.”

He extolled the features of the new school, including, among many, screen projectors in every room, wireless access, and several age-appropriate playscapes.

He told parents about their new principal; “Nancy loves these kids and you’ve all helped create a facility to allow every child who walks through these doors to create their own future.”

Mr. Webb shared the history of the namesake, opened in 1964 in Carver

Park, with 175 African American Superintendent Dr. Fred students.

all Military-related family members are invited to attend a free Veterans Resource Fair on Wednesday September 9, from 10 am to 1 pm at Heroes Night Out in Cedar Park, Texas.

Attendees with be able to speak face-to-face with over 20 Vet/Military-friendly employers and Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs) under one roof.

Last year’s event was such a success, organizer Jim Johnson is again working with representatives from the Texas Workforce Commission, who visit the center on a weekly basis.

They decided to create something for veteran job seekers on a grander scale.

Carmen Valenzuela, a volunteer at the center, says, “It’s another way to get the veterans what they need.

We want to make them aware of the opportunities out there.”

With the military drawing down, there are more after-duty people transitioning back into civilian life. Valenzuela says, “It’s challenging for them but people are looking for their skills and we want to take advantage of the increased need by putting people together.”

She also encouraged anyone who wants to know about Heroes Night Out before the fair to attend one of their free Friday dinners to meet volunteers and connect with other veterans.

It’s Okay...

I saw a video the other day that was supposed to make me aware of the evolution of “favorite” activities.

Grandparents picked blueberries and made toboggans out of scrap wood or swam at the local hole. Precious.

Parents built forts and rode bikes all day, picking up friends until there was enough for a baseball game at the local lot/park/field/ school. Adorable.

Of course the current generation—and these kids were probably not more than 12—­could not say enough about how much they loved their video games, tablets, and texting/ emailing on their phones.

They ticked off the hours they spend every day looking at screens and how much they loooove their technology. Switch back to parents who are now sad or crying and the grandparents shaking their heads.

As a Generation X-er, of course I sympathize with the parents who realize kids don’t go outside and technology has replaced sunshine, Friending has replaced actual friends, etc.

What heart-string-tugging videos always leave out, while making us feel like we’ve lost our humanity, we are self centered or lazy, or some such, is the reality that none of this actually happened because someone invented a smart phone.

How many of us actually live near a blueberry field? Maybe my kids could wander past the end of town by themselves and head out into the country to find one.

And how many could they pick before Mr. MacGregor comes out and yells (or aims) at them to get off his land?

Maybe we could let our kids ride bikes all day and come home when the street lights are on. No, wait, Williams Drive is six lanes across now. There are speeding emergency vehicles, and kidnappers and sex traffickers all over I-35. Remember the lady who was virally walloped because her two kids walked home alone from a playground? So... no.

Maybe go around the neighborhood and gather kids for a game. Buuut, I no longer know the names of every family member in every house on my street, so that’s out.

How about the park?

Nope—pit bulls, pedophiles, stalkers and bullies.

Maybe play in the yard or chalk-draw on the driveway, except for the fire ants, and that time a stranger tried to get my nephews to climb over their own fence to “see his puppy.”

Sports! Yes, sports! Wait, brain damage, heatstroke, and don’t even get me started on the cost.

Laptops? No. The Internet is full of predators and webcam hackers. Sigh.

I guess we could just let them watch television, without the games and texting. But like all generations, I think cartoons today are a lot more stupid than the ones I watched, and commercials are longer and louder all the time. If only Andy Griffith was on all day. (Seriously; humor, morals, music, loyalty, bravery, love and cleverness... was there ever a better show?)

So, dear Reader, don’t beat yourself up if you re-

sort to iPads vice watching your kids wander in a circle around the living room in safety and boredom.

We just need to be creative when we can. I’m not talking Pinterest moms who spend 30 minutes turning an apple into Big Bird (you know who you are).

I’m talking about taking advantage of the things our parents didn’t have, but didn’t really need.

We have playscapes, more splashpads and pools, more playcare, more Gattilands, more playgroups, more movies. There are places where a few people can take care of or entertain a lot of kids for us because we don’t live in Mayberry.

Smart phones and technology are still pretty much in their infancy. I think we just haven’t learned to evolve with them yet.

People didn’t like electricity or telephones or rockn-roll when they were new either. But they are part of the landscape now, we don’t obsess over them any more.

I’ve heard I can bond with kids by “going where they are” and start from there. So I show interest in the iPad myself and many times we move into a new activity and leave it behind.

I do wish kids could still explore the world without fear or danger, but they can’t. I wish I had the time and freedom to wear costumes in my treefort and make homemade strawberry jelly. But I don’t.

People don’t write sonnets any more either but we still fall in love every day.

So, if growing up in 2015 occasionally means giggling together in the glow of the flatscreen, it’s okay that it’s not catching butterflies in a pastoral meadow.

Childhood is still happening all around us.

BiG Benefit Begins 2015 Campaign Brookwood in Georgetown (BiG) kicked

off its annual fundraising campaign in fine style at The Hollow in downtown Georgetown. BiG is planning its annual Golf Benefit on October 12th at Cimarron Hills Country Club.

Board members, advisors, and potential sponsors enjoyed drinks and appetizers as they listened to Executive Director Erin Kiltz describe the transformational changes that are happening in the lives of adults with special needs who are involved in Brookwood in Georgetown.

This God-centered non-profit provides meaningful jobs and opportunities for

growth for 27 Citizens, each of whom captains his or her own fundraising team.

Each team aspires to raise $10,000 (or more!) at the benefit to support the operating expenses of the program. To achieve this goal, each team needs a sponsor and many donors.

Welcome to Georgetown, a city proud of its colorful and historic past - which

It never ceases to amaze me, the masses of people who just need to hear some good news. I read in the Bible, in the book of Matthew, chapter nine, that Jesus and his disciples walked through all the towns and villages in the region of Galilee telling everyone the good news about the kingdom.

This may not seem like such an overwhelming task until we understand that this 40- by 70-mile area

contained some 200 towns and villages. And Jesus visited every single one. Not only did he visit every town and village, but He healed every disease and sickness in each town and village.

It is amazing to note that Jesus made three tours of this region of Galilee.

If you were to do a word study on the meaning of the original language here, you would discover that the language is descriptive of men falling on their

They are easy to find– their names can be seen on the buildings around the square, the streets all over town and the places where everyone goes to play. Our storied past gives

Some of their stories come straight out of the history books, but they were the ordinary people of their times. Meeting them will give a better understanding of our past and how it affects our lives today, putting their accomplishments in perspective.

The Berry family has quite an interesting story.

After crossing the prairie in a covered wagon, John and his third wife, Hannah, settled the area around the creek that today bears their name, raising 12 of their 18 children on the old home place. John, a veteran of the War of 1812 who fought at Tippecanoe with William Henry Harrison, was a blacksmith living in Bastrop before coming to this area. face before the Lord. This could have been due to their mental health, their physical health, but most likely, their spiritual health.

The Bible states that when Jesus looked upon the masses of people, they were like sheep without a shepherd. Many of these villages would be home to as many as 15,000 people. No doubt word would spread fast as this one who heals and loves people would approach their village. In

this area that would hold a population of at least 3 million people, many would have had a personal experience at one time or another with Jesus.

The picture here is Jesus traveling from village to village as the masses come running towards Him, throwing themselves before him, hoping to be healed of their disease or of their sickness.

I say to you, the Savior has not changed. He still

loves. He still heals. At times, we the church may not go from village to village, but the good news is still the same. And that is that the Kingdom of God is near.

Let the Good News out, church! Jesus saves!

When you visit The Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas, you can walk the same streets that Corinna Henderson Taylor walked – bringing lunch to her husband, Emzy, at the bank just up Jail Hill from their family home that still stands at 4th and Main Streets. Emzy Taylor was “Mr. Georgetown” of his day – founding the volunteer fire department, starting the water works for the city, promoting the railroad from Round Rock

to Georgetown and working on the committee to bring Southwestern University to town. His impact can still be felt in the good works of our public servants today.

These are just a few of the characters whose lives tell the story of our past, from the days when there were more pianos in town than bathrooms. This column will introduce you to those characters whose lives and work are still evi-

dent in our city today. Their voices still swirl throughout this community.

Not surprisingly, one of my favorite history quotes is by William Faulkner, who said “The past is not dead. It’s not even past.”

New Covenant Christian Academy Teaches Students To Love, Learn & Lead

The Covenant Christian

Academy, located on the grounds of the former Rabbit Hill School in Georgetown, plans to open its doors on August 25. The school is offering a Christian education to kindergarten through high school students. The school staff estimates attendance to reach 30 to 50 students during the first year of operation.

The Academy was founded by Bill and Terry Wright.

Bill Wright holds an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, and Terry Wright holds an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction.

In 2010, the Wrights established the Kingdom Heights Christian School in Round Rock. In 2011, they created the Century Christian Academy in Pflugerville. Together they have established three schools in the greater Austin area, including the new Covenant Christian Academy, all collectively known as Covenant Community Schools.

The Wrights wanted to establish a school that would service the students of Georgetown, and build a campus that would accommodate the needs of their growing student body. The Covenant Christian Academy in Georgetown allows them to do both.

The Covenant Community Schools, under the Wrights’ leadership, makes a commitment to prepare their students in what they see as the three necessary aspects of a proper education: loving, learning, and leading.

Students are taught that they should love The Lord and live to make him known. This stems from what Terry Wright calls the “pervasively Christian Academy” they maintain.

The pervasiveness of Christianity in the Academy

begins in the classroom.

Every teacher hired by the Covenant Community Schools is degree-certified, but what the CCS sees as even more important than their academic qualifications is, as Terry Wright said, that “each teacher loves The Lord with all of their heart, soul and mind.”

When it comes to learning, the philosophy of the Covenant Community Schools is that an education should be crafted to accommodate the needs of every unique individual. Bill Wright pointed out, “Every child is a classroom.” The CCS does not maintain a “gifted students” program within its school, nor does it require entrance exams for prospective students.

Instead, the school starts from the premise that every child is gifted. The educator’s job is to help the child discover his or her unique gift, and foster an interest related to that talent.

This year the Covenant Community Schools received an affirmation of their educational techniques when they matriculated their first graduating class.

Academically, the graduates ranked in the top 15 percent of high school seniors in the nation.

Students also have the opportunity to learn leadership skills by participating in the school’s leadership training programs. For instance, in the fall semester students can go on a three-to-five day cruise with faculty members where they learn leadership skills, and experience different cultures.

Additional extra-curricular activities offered to students include competition

in the Accelerated Christian Education Ministries. Each year students go to state and international conventions where they choose from over 140 events in categories including music, drama, arts, athletics and academics.

The Covenant Community Schools utilizes these competitions not only as opportunities for educational growth, but also to prepare their students to be leaders in the church.

The school has purposefully observed the needs of the church, and encouraged their students to compete in events that will give them the skills necessary to reinforce the church.

To promote this individual approach to education, the Academy offers a university style class choice. This allows students to choose which courses they will take, and focus on the subjects that interest them most.

This year the school will allow students to only attend individual classes without enrolling as a full-time student to serve as a supplement to other educational programs such as homeschooling.

Bill Wright summarized the reasoning behind the Covenant Community Schools by saying, “Christian students deserve a good Christian education.”

This reasoning has made the Covenant Christian Academy a viable option for students in Georgetown who are seeking to learn from a biblical perspective.

GISD Free & Reduced-Price Meals Georgetown Independent School District

(ISD) announced its policy for providing free and reduced-price meals for children served under the attached current income eligibility guidelines. Each school/site or the central office has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by anyone upon request.

Starting August 24, 2015, Georgetown ISD will begin distributing letters to the households of children in the district about eligibility benefits and any actions households need to take to apply for these benefits. Applications also are available at every school office, Central Office Administration Building at 603 Lakeway Drive, and GISD Support Services at 500 Patriot Way. Families may apply online at GeorgetownISD.org/freereducedapp.

The following criteria will be used: • Household income that is at or below the income eligibility levels; • Household receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP),

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF); or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR); • Child’s status as a foster child, homeless, runaway, migrant, or displaced by a declared disaster; • Child’s enrollment in Head Start or Even Start.

GISD is working with local agencies to identify children who are categorically and program eligible. The district will notify these households that they need not complete an application. Applications may be submitted anytime during the school year.

Under the provisions of the policy, district staff will review applications and determine eligibility.

If a household member becomes unemployed or if the household size increases, the household should contact the school.

Such changes may make the children of the household eligible for benefits if the household’s income falls at or below the attached current income eligibility guidelines.

Trump Trump & Win the Day

have a response for those who are chastising me for not saying what an egregious blowhard Donald Trump is. To be blunt, I won’t say it because Trump is the best thing that has happened to the Republican election cycle in a long time. Stay with me–don’t quit reading just yet or you’ll miss my point; and more importantly, you’ll miss what certainly could be salvation for our once great nation.

Do I want Donald Trump as our next President? No. But friends, let me tell you, he is saying what millions of Americans are thinking. I have a message for my Republican friends. If you want to win this election, then you better pay attention to ‘the Donald’.

You better listen to every word he says, separate out the wheat from the chaff, and then move as quickly as possible to gather the wheat. If you don’t, you are definitely going to coronate Hillary Clinton as the 45th President of the United States.

First, Americans do want a wall built between the

U.S. and Mexico. Let’s not pontificate on the finer points of why; let’s just get to the most logical reasoning. A strong, high, fortified fence will stop foreigners (from many nations) from entering our country illegally and breaking our laws.

If you need a sub-point of reference, look no further than the cost of educating them, taking care of their medical needs, and taking care of their welfare benefits. Americans are tired of paying the freight for these lawbreakers. Period.

Second, China and Russia are killing our economy with consistently bad trade deals. Both are trying to undermine our currency. Both would like nothing better than to turn the power grid off, or hack into our banking system so that you can’t use your ATM card or withdraw money even from your bank. Friends? I think not.

Third, the Middle East (for the most part) hates us. They don’t even make a secret out of that, yet this administration still defends them. Moments after Obama agreed on the worst deal in the history of mankind with Iran, an Iranian newspaper affiliated with their Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said in an editorial that Iran could destroy the White House in under ten minutes. Newsflash, Barack: That’s your house, dude. Side note: Why aren’t you landing a drone on his head right now?

Fourth, we’re forsaking the best friend we have in the world, Israel. And our other friends around the world don’t trust us. If you’re one of the 83% of Americans who claim to be

Christian, then you might have read this once or twice in a book you should be fairly familiar with, The Bible, which says of Israel in Genesis 12:3: I will bless those who bless you and curse those that curse thee.

I don’t know about you but I take that very seriously.

Fifth, we’re bankrupting our own country by giving our citizens free stuff that we, nor they, can afford.

Free phones, free internet.

What’s next? Sign them up for Amazon Prime? This is insanity and Americans are sick and tired of it.

Here’s the solution: Republican candidates for President–stop lowering yourselves to Trump’s level. Stop calling him names.

The American people can clearly see who he is. And from his standing in the polls, they can clearly see who you are, as well. Run, don’t walk toward Trump.

Run toward many of the strong pro-American positions he’s put forth. Shout them from the rooftop.

Paint them on billboards.

Scream them from the Sunday news shows and in the media. The sooner you do, the sooner Trump will go away In case you decide not to follow my advice, consider this: If Donald Trump runs as an Independent, you will be blamed as a party for giving this election away to the Democrats who are making no secret that they want a full blown socialist, quasi communist, secular government in America.

Get on it boys (and girl).

The opportunity is right in front of you – now is the time to seize the day!

We Must Stop Federal Funds to Sanctuary Cities Congressman John Carter R-TX31 “Help me Dad.” These were the final words uttered

by Kate Steinle as she died in her Father’s arms after suffering a gunshot to the chest at the hands of a criminal illegal alien. We know all too well that evil prevails when good men stand idly by – I for one will not stand idly by.

That is why I strongly support the House passed Enforce the Law for Sanctuary Cities Act, and the Fiscal Year 2016 Department of Homeland Security funding bill.

Both bills ensure sanctuary cities and states who refuse to remove criminal illegal aliens from their streets will no longer receive certain federal funding. Additionally, our DHS appropriations bill provides for many critical elements of our national security and reins in reckless, irresponsible policies forced on the American people by a careless administration.

There has been a steady shift within liberal states and jurisdictions that has grown in lock step with the illegal alien population where jurisdictions have gone beyond simply turning a blind eye to the illegal immigrant population to the creation and passing of ordinances and policies to stymie federal government efforts to remove criminal illegal aliens from

their cities. Yet, these very same cities hold out their hands for federal grants and decry the heavy costs and burdens placed on their public services brought by the very population they refuse to help remove. It is past time that we stand up to these lawless practices, and do everything in our power to reverse this trend in American cities.

Too often we hear that individuals coming across the border simply want to work and provide for their family. What about the 3,000 murders that took place in Texas at the hands of illegal aliens? Would it not be in the best interest of all American citizens

and immigrant communities alike to remove these criminals from our streets? How much more suffering will be heaped on Americans at the hands of criminal illegal aliens?

The American public has suffered enough from the administration’s failure to enforce immigration laws.

The Yoder amendment to the DHS appropriations bill and the Enforce the Law for Sanctuary Cities Act will ensure those cities who desire help in preparing for hazards do their part in helping clean up their own streets, and deny grants to those cities that don’t.

Every year, thousands of criminal illegal aliens in the custody of State and local jails around the nation go unreported to Immigration Agents because they reside in so called “sanctuary cities.” It defies commonsense that we would continue to allocate federal grants to build, sustain, and improve a cities capacity to protect against the very hazards they perpetuate through sanctuary city policies. In Texas we use a simple phrase “God helps those who help themselves.” We can’t continue to help a city that won’t lift a finger to help themselves.

Make no mistake, illegal aliens held in State and local jails around the nation were not arrested on immigration violations. Rather, many have been arrested on a slew of felonies to include burglary, rape, robbery, drug trafficking, manslaughter, and murder. The tragic death of Kate Steinle in the arms of her father after being shot by a criminal illegal alien is the most sobering of examples of why we must act.

Therefore, my colleagues and I are using the power of the purse. We were compelled to act and use all means in defense of our citizens; citizens can now decide – do you want help in cleaning up your streets or will you continue to elect local officials that refuse to protect the residents under their charge. I proudly stand for the safety of the American people, and that is why we must stop taxpayer dollars from being awarded to “sanctuary cities.”

OP-ED Williamson County Needs Death Investigators Today—Medical Examiner’s Office In The Future Judge Bill Gravell, Jr.

For the past two years, Williamson County Commissioners, along with the Sheriff, District Attorney, County Attorney, County Judge, and all four Justices of the Peace have been discussing options that could lead to a Medical Examiner (ME) office and/or Death Investigators for the county.

Although no action has been taken to date, statistics indicate, and I concur, that it’s time to move from the

discussion stage to formal action.

Let me explain the existing process. When there is a death that is “sudden or unattended by a doctor” in Williamson County, a criminal investigation, which engages local law enforcement, as well as a Justice of the Peace, is opened. In many cases, the Justice of the Peace orders an autopsy to assist in determining the cause of death; a procedure which is currently per-

formed by an out -of-county Medical Examiner since Williamson County doesn’t have one. The Justice of the Peace is then charged with considering all evidence and determining the cause of death.

These deaths can, and obviously do, occur at any hour and day of the week, and Justices of the Peace must respond immediately when they do. Our JPs already lead the busiest courts in Williamson County, and some of the busiest courts that exist in Texas. In 2014 alone, our JP courts had 34,641 new cases filed, and death inquests continue to increase. In 2014, Justice of the Peace offices in Williamson County attended to 461 death investigations that met the criteria for their engagement. In 2015, at our current rate, we are

on track to complete 520 death investigations, a 13 percent increase. In my own experience on the bench, I have been forced to leave court cases mid-testimony on numerous occasions to respond to a death inquest.

This requires my staff to reset the case which causes hardship on the litigants, as well as a delay in justice. It is most certainly unfair and unreasonable to our citizens who have shown up in court to have their cases heard, frequently after they have already waited for months, to be told that they could have to wait up to another year for resolution.

Williamson County’s four Justices of the Peace have over 60 years’ combined experience dealing with death inquests; and I can report with confidence that they have an astounding

record for “getting it right” when it comes to cause of death. On a personal note, as a JP, there is certainly no matter that I take more seriously than the determination required by a death inquest. It is my paramount role to correctly write the last chapter of the deceased person’s life. Whether it was a tragic accident, a brutal murder or an unexpected natural death, until you have heard the mother of a deceased child ask, “Can I hold him one more time?” you cannot imagine the indelible affect these scenes have on even the most experienced of judges.

There are days that I have cried after a call because my heart is so broken by the destruction I have just witnessed and the lives that have been changed forever.

I, as well as my colleagues,

take this job very seriously— and that is why I am advocating for, and growth is potently indicating the need in the not too distant future for, a Medical Examiner right here in our county.

Our County Judge, Dan Gattis, is passionately supportive of us, and has taken the first step by working to support us in our request to provide Death Investigators for the county. This intermediate solution will help ensure the highest level of justice is always readily available to those in their most serious times of need, while freeing the JPs’ schedules to accommodate their burgeoning case loads.

History will record our efforts now favorably if we do what we know is right and just, look to the future, lead, and plan.

The FOX Debate

Thursday, August 6th, 2015 was the first GOP presidential debate. There are 17 who want to be the GOP presidential candidate. Fox news split these people into two tiers. The top 10 debated at 8 pm, the remaining seven were the second tier at 4 pm. I am focusing on the second tier because I want to introduce everyone to Carly Fiorina.

The debates took place in Cleveland, Ohio, where the GOP national convention will be held. The folks in the second tier did not receive as high a percentage in the last five national polls. Carly Fiorina, former CEO of Hewlett Packard, totally dominated the debate. She garnered 82 percent of the vote from those watching on the Fox Network. I believe Rick Perry came in second with 7 percent. Rick actually complimented Carly when he said that Carly should have been in Iran instead of John Kerry.

On Friday the 7th, Glenn Beck called Carly to ask her stance on big government as he had heard rumors.

GLENN: This audience is a little different than

most audiences. They are very, very well read. They know what’s going on. And they know what they believe. And what they don’t believe in is giant progressive government. And there are progressives in both parties. It’s not a liberal or conservative thing. Or a Democrat and Republican thing. It is a Constitution or this new idea of the progressives. And when I say new, I mean in the last 100 years. Where do you fall on that scale? Because I’ve seen some of — you know, some of the things that you believe in, and you seem to be a little big government.

Fair to say?

CARLY: Oh, my goodness. No. Not at all fair to say. Not at all fair to say. In fact, I’m sorry you feel that way. Let me try to clear that up for you and your listeners. Here’s what happened.

When big government gets bigger, only the big, the powerful, the wealthy, and the well connected can handle it. It’s called crony capitalism. And you are right. Both Republicans and Democrats alike have created crony capitalism. Have furthered crony capitalism.

It is what people who have been in the status quo, politics, all their lives do because that system, that status quo benefits them.

The truth is, the only way you can level the playing field so that the small and the powerless can prosper is to reduce the power of government.

I started out as a secretary in a little nineperson real estate firm. My husband, Frank, started out driving a tow truck for

a family-owned auto body shop. It’s how most people start. And so when we have government crushing the potential of this nation — and that’s what we have.

You know, you mentioned God. And I’m glad you did, and I know you’re a man of great faith. And I’m a woman of faith. Jesus Christ has seen me through some very difficult times.

But when I was a little girl, my mother said to me, what you are is God’s gift to you.

What you make of yourself is your gift to God. This, I believe, is the fight we must have. I, as a conservative, believe every one of us is gifted by God. No one of us is any better than any other one of us.

Every one of us has the capacity and the desire to live a life of dignity and purpose and meaning.

This government is now crushing the potential of this nation and too many people in it. And progressives honestly believe that it’s okay to crush people’s potential because progressives believe, some of us are smarter than others.

Some of us are better than others. So some of us are going to take care of others.

The core of conservatism is not just the value of life, but the gift in every life. And the core of progressivism is “Nah, actually some of us know better than the rest of you.” That is why government has to get cut down to size. Because it is crushing the potential of this nation.

And crushing the potential of too many Americans.

I predict Carly Fiorina will be in the top tier before the next debate.
