Texas Lawman Wants To Be New Williamson Sheriff Lt. Mike Cowie has lived and served

in law enforcement in and around Williamson County since 1981, but has been wanting to be sheriff since he was about four years old. He began a distinguished career in law enforcement in 1976, while still in high school. He spent most of his career as a member of the Narcotics Service with DPS, where he was responsible for or involved in dozens of trafficking investigations and resolutions, not just in Williamson County, but across Texas and the nation. He rose in the ranks with DPS to Lieutenant; even accorded U.S. Marshall status on some assignments, and retired out of the Temple office in 2007. He was also afforded U.S. Marshall status on occasion. A full 18 days later, he returned to law enforcement to work for current Sheriff James Wilson as a detective in property crimes. He was quickly promoted to Sergeant in narcotics and again to Lieutenant at CID in 2013. He works there currently,

managing three sergeants and 20 detectives who oversee crime scenes, evidence and victim assistance. Among his many accomplishments is the arrest of 32 individuals in the first methamphetamine trafficking case in the Western District of Texas. The “cookers” were making 35-50 pounds of product at a time in water heaters, which they transported to Williamson and Hays Counties. He is also proud of a successful kidnap case in 2007 after a chase across Central Texas. Using gumshoe expertise, his team recovered the victim and captured the

suspects and the ringleaders looking to ransom the man to pay off drug debts. Cowie is aware of the irony that he spent a great deal of his 35-year career making every effort to be inconspicuous and thus most effective at his job, but now is reaching out to the quarter-million registered voters in Williamson County. “To say that isn’t hard would be a lie, but I have the experience and background in law enforcement required to be Sheriff. This is the first office I’ve run for and it wasn’t a decision I made lightly, but it is the job See Cowie, page 5

ast week Georgetown hosted a rare celebration that was as much about elevating rare amphibians as it was about the rare governmental cooperation that made it possible for the former to continue living safely in our city limits.

Mayor Ross was very pleased with the outcome; “It’s a wonderful way that Georgetown goes about solving problems. We worked with the county, state and federal government. We’ve shown we can work with the government at all levels See Salamander, page 2

On August 17, the Georgetown ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to call a bond election totaling $160.6 million. According to a recent article in TIME magazine, Georgetown is the second fastest growing city in the United States. Georgetown ISD has the largest number of future home sites than any surrounding school district. According to recent demographic reports, GISD can expect an increase of approximately 3,500 students in the next ten years. Right now, many schools do not have the capacity to grow or accommodate that future growth. As well, the bond will facilitate modern, effective physical security at several schools, new buses, and reduce the need for detached buildings, which also increase the possibility of incident or accident. Early voting has already begun and continues through October 30.
