Georgetown Conductor is Bringing J.S. Bach to Life

Georgetown is joining

the fashionable fraternity of global locales to host a classical music festival devoted to the music of famous Baroque-era composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). The Texas Bach Festival (TBF), founded by Artistic Director and Conductor Barry Scott Williamson, begins this July 6-9 at St. Helen’s Catholic Church.

It is our continued good fortune to call Dr. Williamson a neighbor, as he has been working hard to bring world-class professional instrumentalists and singers to us for this inaugural event.

Throughout the majority of his 40-year career, while working, winning awards and in demand from New York to Austria, he has been an integral part of the Austin-area music scene.

He returned to Central Texas in 2012 to be close to his daughter Caitlin and, once again engaged in local music, Williamson is bringing his innovative style to the sacred music at St. Helen's as Director of Music Ministries.

Like many professionals,

he still travels to accommodate requests to share his gifts with the likes of Carnegie Hall (June 2018) but, he says, "No matter where life and concertizing takes me, I will return to Georgetown to lead the Texas Bach Festival for at least the next 25 years."

Williamson founded the non-profit organization, the only one in Central Texas devoted to the life of and music of Johann Sebastian Bach, to engage and enrich the people and arts community in Georgetown. "The majority of the festival musicians are members of the Austin Symphony," Williamson says. "They have been lobbying me for years to create this festival.

These musicians have a big ASO concert on July 4th and they said if I did this, they would all stay in town for another week before heading out around the globe for other projects.

I said 'thank you, all right, let's go!'"

The festival will comprise four days of performances July 6, 7, 8 and 9, ranging from sumptuous chamber music of Mozart, Schumann and Brahms to challenging Bach cantatas with orchestra plus his fa-

The Emancipation Proclamation freeing the slaves had been in effect since January 1, 1863, but word did not reach Texas for more than two years. Free Cat Clinic Protect YourThe Georgetown Animal self from Zika Shelter’s free spay/neuter clinic for cats on Saturday, June 24. The goal of the clinics is to reduce the cat population in Georgetown.

This is the sixth year that the shelter has offered free spay/neuter clinics for cats, and it seems to be making a difference in the number of kittens at the shelter.

Spay and neuter surgeries and rabies vaccinations will be provided at no charge. Other services are available.

Appointments are required for the free clinics, which are offered on a firstcome, first-served basis and are not necessarily for low-income cat owners.

Cats or kittens must be at least three months old.

The clinic is offered only for cats whose owners live in the Georgetown city limits.

Additionally, the shelter continues to offer low-cost vaccine clinics every few months, which are walkup clinics for vaccinations only, not spay/neuter surgeries. Call (512) 930-3592 to schedule your cat for surgery.

The virus is spread through the bite of certain types of mosquitoes. While it can cause fever, rash, joint pain and red or pink eyes, about 80 percent of people with Zika do not become ill or have symptoms. Zika also can be spread through blood transfusions and sexual contact.

Should I Worry?

Most of Texas has a long mosquito season and many people travel to places where Zika is active. This means you have a greater chance of coming into contact with the Zika virus and potentially spreading it to your loved ones and other Texans. Although rare, the Zika virus may also be among the causes of Guillain-Barré syndrome, a condition in which your immune system attacks part of your nervous system.

The Zika virus also can be spread from mother to child, if the mother is infected with the Zika virus during pregnancy.

OUTSIDE apply EPA-approved insect repellent. Wear pants and long-sleeve shirts that cover exposed skin. In warmer weather, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that covers exposed skin.

AT HOME use screens or close windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of your home. Remove standing water in and around your home. This includes water in cans, toys, tires, plant saucers, and any container that can hold water. Cover trash cans or containers where water can collect.

Water conservation in our fast-growing city

Now that we have reached the hottest months of the summer, irrigation systems are running and water use is reaching our peak demand of the year. During the summer months, 75 percent of the water treated by the City is used for outdoor lawn irrigation. Our staff at Georgetown Utility Systems recognizes that water conservation practices need to become the new normal in our growing city.

This summer, the City continues our #PickTwo campaign to encourage wise water use. The watering schedule allows outdoor irrigation on up to three days each week. We hope you will take the step that is the single biggest way to conserve water and choose to #PickTwo days to water. The watering schedule is based on your address.

Watering schedule If your house has an

automatic irrigation system or if you use hose-end sprinklers, the schedule is based on the last digit of your address number: Odd addresses may irrigate on Tuesday, Thursday, and/or Saturday. Even addresses may irrigate on Wednesday, Friday, and/or Sunday.

Irrigation is not permitted on Mondays, since they are a recharge day for the City’s water treatment plants and storage tanks.

Watering with a handheld hose or bucket can be done any day, as well as other outdoor uses such as washing a vehicle or filling a swimming pool.

Another step you can take to conserve water is to drop three minutes on the zone run times on your irrigation system. Shaving a few minutes off the zone run times can save a significant amount of water.

And your lawn will still be getting enough to stay healthy. If you need help adjusting your controller, contact Customer Care at (512) 930-3640 or customercare@georgetown.org.

Irrigation system check rebates

This year the City is introducing a new rebate program to help encourage wise water use. George-

town Utility Systems is offering a $75 rebate to customers with an underground irrigation system for a system inspection by a licensed irrigator.

The $75 rebate helps defray the cost of having a licensed irrigator inspect your system, set the controller to the correct schedule, and teach you how to maintain the proper settings in the future. Go to gus.georgetown.org/water for details on the irrigation system check rebate and an online form.

Rebates are processed on a first-come, first-served basis and will continue until available funding is used. The rebate will be processed as a credit on your water bill.

AquaAlerts

Another way you can help to monitor and adjust your water use is to sign up for AquaAlerts by AquaMessenger. When you sign up for AquaAlerts, you choose water use thresholds and then receive an automated email when you hit those levels each month. For instance, you can set email alerts when you reach 10,000 gallons, 15,000 gallons, and 19,000 gallons of water each month. You decide the alert levels and you can adjust

them or turn them off at any time. Sign up at gus. georgetown.org/water.

Water supply

When the City promotes water conservation, some may wonder if Georgetown is “running out of water.”

Our growth in population does mean that we need to carefully manage our water resources. However, managing our seasonal water supplies to meet peak summer demand is not the same issue as our long-term water supply contracts.

Georgetown’s current water supply comes from ground water as well as surface water in Lake Georgetown and in Stillhouse Hollow Lake.

The current projection in the Water Master Plan, given population growth, is that these water sources will meet demand through 2047. With additional conservation measures, our water sources can meet demand past 2060.

Water use by George-

town residents currently averages about 125 gallons per person per day. To meet future demand, we need to scale back residential average use to 120 gallons per person per day. In taking steps to help us meet that goal, the City is using several strategies such as irrigation schedules, offering rebates for water conservation practices, and reducing the irrigated lawn area for new homes.

Water storage capacity

Keeping up with water demand in a growing city also means that Georgetown Utility Systems is adding system capacity. A one-million gallon elevated storage tank on Westinghouse Road was completed last year to increase water storage on the southwest side of the city. A two-million gallon elevated storage tank at Cedar Breaks and DB Wood Road will be completed this summer.

Later this year, a new

two-million gallon storage tank is planned for Sun City along Sun City Boulevard.

As we enter the months with the highest demand on our water treatment, storage, and distribution system, I hope you will do your part to use water wisely. Check the irrigation schedule for your address and then #PickTwo days to water. Sign up for AquaAlerts to learn about your water use practices each month. We each have a role to play in adopting water conservation practices that ensure long-term supplies of this important shared resource. Together we can change our water use habits to make sure we have the water we need for the future.

Inspiring Entrepreneur Already Living a Grateful, Spiritual, Successful Life At 19 years old,

Clair Cole is not your ordinary artist. Neither was her journey to business ownership.

Cole has been working and supporting herself either in part or completely since she was 14 years old and in January she took a great leap. She quit a job she really liked to commit her energy full-time to the creative enterprise she truly loves. She is already reaching milestones in sales and thriving on the opportunities for art, healing and nurturing everyone she meets.

Her unlikely path began at age 14 when she dropped out of high school. "I had a rocky home life growing up and suffered from anxiety and depression. My mom had some problems and I basically raised myself since middle school age. I tried home school and public school and it just didn't work for me. I didn't fit in that box but I still needed to figure out how I could be self-sufficient. Then, when I was 16, my mother asked me to move out of her house.

But I was lucky enough to be able to stay with friends and I am super grateful that I was never left for the streets."

Undaunted, she put herself through a GED program and literally earned her diploma by paying the school fees herself.

"My GED was the first taste of success and I realized all the things I could do now that I was capable of finishing."

During that time she also channeled her stress into creating jewelry out of the crystals she had always been drawn to. "I

had a counselor who worked with crystals and stones. She had a way of bringing the magic out, telling me that holding a particular crystal would give me strength, and it did. I carried stones with me for a long time and was happy when I learned to make them into jewelry to wear on the outside."

Cole has spent time studying the properties of stones and crystals and admits they have often helped her connect with people. "I like to put people and elements together for healing and nurturing. I know the elements speak to us all the time but not everyone is listening so it's a little

like therapy. I asked one client about her needs and I knew she needed an opal.

Turned out she already had one in her hand." Incidentally, amethysts help with sleep problems and anxiety, lapis lazuli may relieve a fear of public speaking, and wear opals when you're longing for someone. "I love to help people find something that will help get them to their happiest self. At the very least, we all feel good when we are adorned with jewels!"

When Cole turned 17, jewelry stopped being a hobby and became a real business.

"I knew I wanted to be a business owner and my own boss. It's been almost three years; I haven’t slowed down and I don’t plan to." In addition to making and selling jewelry, she is working on a business plan, slow and steady; branding, social media and marketing herself. She has enjoyed the crowd-surfing approach from various

mentors at Lifeworks, Dell, and friends and family; including her mom, who has been in recovery and they have rebuilt a solid relationship. She is also now a youth ambassador for Lifeworks, helping others become self-sufficient.

"I don't regret any part of my life because it made me who I am and I am proud of that. I have tried to use every situation to learn and grow and find my own success so I don't have to repeat lessons. I've just developed the habit and craving to be self-sufficient."

In addition to jewelry, she enjoys making her business an all-sensory experience.

Not only does she educate customers about the properties and benefits of her stones, her packaging often includes herbs, flowers and natural presentations to delight all the senses with love, comfort and safety.

While she is a savvy businesswoman, she still takes time to be young. She is an excellent hula-hooper and loves to juggle and sing. She draws and paints, loves to be outside and in museums. She wants to see the world and have a family someday.

"I've never taken a handout. It's important to work to help yourself. So when I reach my goal, having a business like Kendra Scott, I will still have my own style, my personal brand and it will be something that sustains me spiritually and financially."

WilCo EMS Earns American Heart Association Mission: Lifeline Award

Williamson County EMS has received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® EMS Gold Plus Award. This award is given for continuing to meet quality improvement measures for the treatment of patients who experience heart attacks.

Every year, more than

250,000 people experience a STEMI, or ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction, a type of heart attack caused by a complete blockage of blood flow to the heart that requires timely treatment.

To prevent death, it’s critical to restore blood flow as quickly as possible, either by surgically opening the

blocked vessel or by giving clot-busting medication.

Mission: Lifeline seeks to save lives by closing the gaps that separate STEMI patients from timely access to appropriate treatments.

Mission: Lifeline’s EMS recognition program recognizes those emergency responders for their efforts in improving STEMI systems of care and improving the quality of life for these patients.

Emergency Medical System providers are vital to the success of Mission: Lifeline. EMS agencies provide access to 12-lead ECG machines (devices that measures the electrical activity of the heartbeat and

can help medical personnel determine if a heart attack has occurred), and follow protocols derived from American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology guidelines. The correct tools and training allow EMS providers to rapidly identify the STEMI, promptly notify the medical center from the scene, and trigger an early response from the awaiting hospital personnel.

Agencies that receive the Mission: Lifeline Gold Plus award have demonstrated at least 75 percent compliance for each required achievement measure for two years and treated at least eight STEMI patients for each

year. To receive the Plus designation Williamson County EMS reported on an optional measurement.

“EMTs and paramedics play a vital part in the system of care for those who have heart attacks,” said Nancy Brown, chief executive officer of the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association. “Since they often are the first medical point of contact, they can shave precious minutes of life-saving treatment time by activating the emergency response system that alerts hospitals.

We applaud Williamson County EMS for achieving this award that shows it meets evidence-based

guidelines in the treatment of people who have severe heart attacks.”

“Williamson County EMS is dedicated to making our department among the best in the country, and the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline program is helping us accomplish that by implementing processes for improving STEMI systems of care with the goal of improving the quality of care for all STEMI patients,” said Mike Knipstein, director of Williamson County EMS. “We are pleased to be recognized for our dedication and achievements in emergency medical care for STEMI patients.”

Volunteer Opportunities at B2MOG/ DOTK What if there was a community center in Williamson County where Christian men (and women) could visit one or more evenings each week, or each month, to teach children who don’t have fathers how to become good providers, spouses and parents?

There is. “Boys 2 Men of God” and "Daughters of the King" were founded by Robert Hall to do just that.

BTMOG is an after-school program in Round Rock that, for a few hours every weekday, is an opportunity for children to be part of a family and learn the kind of dynamics that come with nurturing and strong bonds. Hall is reaching out to the Georgetown and Sun City community to share the mission of BTMOG and encourage those who are looking for someone to mentor or ways to give back to the community.

A typical day at the center starts at 4pm with a snack and the kids either do crafts or homework inside or go outside to play basketball or football. Volunteers provide or distribute the snacks, help with homework, play games, share crafts, or play outside. At 5:30 they pray over the dinner meal, which is provided and served by volunteers.

After dinner there is a Bible story, and activities wrap up around 7pm. There are usually 25-30 kids Monday through Thursday and as many as 50 on a Friday afternoon and the ratio of kids to volunteers is usually about 5:1.

“Just picture a family doing things together; playing on a swing, sharing a meal, talking about school. That’s what we do here. These are not at-risk kids, and we hope, by giving them love and mentorship, to make sure they never will be.”

Hall started out mentoring several students in the Round Rock ISD on his own. “I was surprised to know how many kids were in need of such a thing and I felt strongly the God put

it on my heart to do more.

Now we are hoping to find more folks who can share that vision and come hang out with us.”

Hall emphasizes that there are no special qualifications to volunteer. “We want people who have a desire to be around kids. It’s easy to hand out snacks, or make a pot of spaghetti for our evening meal. Maybe talk to some about joining the military or becoming an artist. We hope to find a good mix of people who can connect with and find the fire in each one. There are so many broken families and a lot of programs for people in need; we think of ourselves as the bridge between the two.

We’re just helping them feel connected.”

Although the program is designed to create a Christ-centered foundation, everyone is welcome regardless of faith. “We don’t exclude anyone and kids are welcome not to participate in a particular activity if they are uncomfortable.”

Anyone interested in helping BTMOG is welcome any time, whether its to teach wood carving or provide a meal. Volunteers are needed to prepare and serve snacks, help with homework, teach life and home skills (knitting, computers). Hall asks if you would like to teach a craft, please bring supplies as they have no storage space.

Although the crowd was down from previous years, Rotary continues to apply for grants and raise funds for children all over Williamson County. At press time, Bohnenkamp estimates the event will add as much as $20,000 for program donations.

“People are under the misconception that kids in Georgetown, Round Rock and Cedar Park all come from happy families with

plenty of money and it’s just not true. As Georgetown and surrounding areas grow, so too do the needs of the children here. There are a lot of disadvantaged kids and we are trying to help them as they grown.

Sunset Deadlock On June 6th, Governor Abbott announced that the 85th Texas Legislature would be called back on July 18th for a special session to take up twenty issues left unresolved after the close of the regular session in May. The governor made clear on multiple occasions that he felt the legislature had had time in the regular session to resolve these issues, if they so chose; so, what could cause the governor to take this drastic of an action?

In my last article, I started my look at “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” of the 85th session with a review of the “good”, the ability for both chambers, and both parties, to come together and produce a working budget agreement.

The answer to why we will be returning on July 18th, however, covers “the bad”.

I’ll save “the ugly” for last.

On its face, the special session is the result of the failure to pass a bill that would renew the Texas Medical Board. Without such a bill, at the end of the current fiscal year on September 1st, the Texas Medical Board would enter into a forced shutdown, possibly permanently, leaving no one to license doctors in the state. These “sunset bills” as they are known, are considered “Must Pass” legislation; they are bills “Too Big to Fail”. However, the real question is why such an important bill did not pass during the regular session.

The Speaker of the House, the Lieutenant Governor, and the Governor, all have their own lists of priorities they wish to accomplish during their term, and those lists don’t always line up with each other. When the people in charge of the law-making process become aggravated at an inability to accomplish those goals, then the process itself begins to be used as a bargaining chip to achieve what they want.

If the House isn’t happy with something the Senate is doing, for instance, they could simply refuse to schedule Senate Bills for hearings or votes, and the Senate can do the same, and the governor can threaten a veto. Often this is done with contrasting priorities: Legislator A lets something I don’t like from Legislator B through so that Legislator B will let something of Legislator As through committee, for example. If they reach an agreement, they both get their pet projects done, and if they fail to come to terms, then all they lose is their pet project.

In the 85th session,

Lieutenant Governor Patrick pushed hard for his agenda on property tax rollback elections, Education Savings Accounts to allow for an expansion of school choice, and regulations on who can enter which bathroom in a government building. Speaker Straus, on the other hand, seemed to focus the House on bringing more efficiency and effectiveness from our public school finance system, making Texas a more attractive state to business, and increasing access to mental health options.

Not only were the priorities of each chamber different, they ran almost completely opposite one another. The priorities of the Senate, namely the Women’s privacy act, in the eyes of the House, ran against the priority of making Texas a more attractive state for business. This transforms what had previously been a “you get yours if I get mine” situation into an “Unstoppable force meets an immovable object” situation. The ability to compromise and work together suddenly vanishes; only to be replaced by leverage and coercion.

However, when something like a sunset bill comes along, it can become a much more serious bargaining chip. Rather than simply risking their pet project, the leadership of either chamber may hold the proverbial “gun to the head” of a major state agency, turning legislating into a hostage negotiation, one that was never resolved.

And so, we find ourselves here, facing a special session in which, to prevent the effects of the deadlock from spilling over and disrupting the ongoing business of the state, we must first handle the sunset process for the Texas Medical Board before tackling any other topic.

The use of the Texas Medical Board sunset bill as a bargaining chip was bad, but the ugly, which I will address in more detail next time, comes down to the fundamental questions of what we hold as the role of a representative in our form of government, and if we believe making law is more a collaborative or adversarial effort.

Our political methodology, both in Austin and in Washington, has been trending away from collaborative law-making, where all the sides come together and attempt to work out their differences and find something that can be generally agreed on. Instead, there is a shift towards an “Us v Them” scenario.

There is no longer any true attempt to persuade, inform, or collaborate.

Victory comes only at the unconditional surrender or total defeat of the opposition.

If we want to break this deadlock, we must encourage the leadership to adopt a new vision for how we conduct our politics, which will result in good governance for the people of Texas.

CITY OF GEORGETOWN Georgetown Wins 2017 Workforce Excellence Award

The Georgetown Workforce Development Alliance, which includes the City of Georgetown, Georgetown Chamber of Commerce, and Georgetown Independent School District, was awarded the Texas Economic Development Council’s 2017 Workforce Excellence Award for population 40,001 to 100,000 today.

The alliance is a collaborative community effort to align quality education with workforce development needs and was started as the Education Committee of the Chamber, which has its roots in the GTSet4Success; Aligning Education and Economic Development initiative, which began in 2009.

“We are excited that the hard work the Workforce Development Alliance has put into our community is being recognized at a state level,” Georgetown Economic Development Director Michaela Dollar said.

“This collaborative group is an extraordinary asset to have in Georgetown as we grow and develop the city. It is also a testament to the cooperative business environment that makes us so unique.”

The WDA’s efforts in 2016 resulted in programs such as the Georgetown Career Fair and the first Manufacturing Day. The career fair was hosted for GISD juniors and seniors and included job openings with local employers as well as sessions on interviewing skills and resume writing. Manufacturing

Day included several local manufacturers hosting more than 60 high school students to spur interest for future training and employment opportunities.

“The WDA is invested in addressing the workforce needs of our growing City and implementing successful workforce initiatives to ensure that we are meeting the needs of our community,” Chamber President Karen Sheldon said.

The Workforce Excellence Award program recognizes exceptional contributions by a Texas community or region that

has implemented successful workforce initiatives. Nominees were judged on five criteria: innovativeness, transferability, community commitment and leverage, measured objectives, and secondary benefits.

“Our TEDC’s Workforce Excellence Award is one of the ways in which our organization honors the outstanding work done by our communities and regions, their leaders, and their economic development professionals in the area of workforce development,” TEDC President/ CEO Carlton Schwab said.

10 Things

Every New Texan Needs to Know

As a Texas transplant of nearly nine years, and among those who “got here as fast as I could,” I’ve been compiling a list of important things that new Texans probably ought to know. I have run this before, but I do update my list regularly, and with 350 new people moving to Texas every day, I feel it’s my duty to help them assimilate. Of course, those who were born here are dismissed from the mandatory completion of

this reading since you grew up knowing in your bones what we far’ners had to learn through experience.

1. Never tell a Texan how to make a hamburger. A $2.50 hamburger from a hole-in-the-wall a hundred miles from the middle of nowhere is better than any hamburger that has ever been cooked east of the Mississippi. There must be an extra hamburger cookin’ gene that is only found in Texas DNA. 2. Blue Bell Ice Cream comes in pints for a reason. Back East we found pints to be very inconvenient; too much ice cream for one sitting and not enough for two. In Texas, while a pint (yes, it must be Blue Bell, no substitutions) is just perfect anytime throughout the year, it an absolute necessity for survival from April to November when we’re having a li’l hot spell.

3. “In Texas, we don’t cut down Pecan trees.” I personally believe that to survive the heat, everyone in Texas needs a pool; and in order to place ours in the most auspicious sun-toshade spot, there was one tree that had to go. My wife’s grandma (our nextdoor neighbor and a native Texan) watched from the window as the pool guys bulldozed this tiny, scraggly little tree. The next time we visited, she politely (yet sternly) informed me of this unwritten Texas law with which I was obviously unfamiliar.

Where we came from they were pretty and plentiful, but not very useful.

In Texas, though fewer and far between, they are the difference between life and death in the summer heat.

Our house is in the country and it does not have a garage; it only took a few summers of blistering car

seats and steering wheels before we began parking in the yard under the big ol’ Pecan tree from May through October.

4. a) If it bites, stings, crawls, slithers, or can make you itch, it lives in your yard; b) There is no such thing as a “little” rattlesnake - remember, every little snake has a Mommy and Daddy.

5. There are way too many stars in the sky.

Look at the night sky in Texas and then look at the night sky in a Planetarium (that’s the only way you can see stars most places back East). I’m almost positive there were about a million fewer on the ceiling of the planetarium.

(Note to self: Tell son that if he decides to study Astronomy, do it east of the Mississippi - there won’t be nearly as much to remember.)

6. If a Texan tells you

it’s just down the road “a piece” you better get your oil changed, your tires rotated and pack a lunch. As near as I can tell, “a piece” here seems to be somewhere between 86-191 miles; just a hop, skip and a jump down the road for good BBQ, the coldest beer or the best breakfast taco.

7. No matter how hot it gets, it can get hotter.

I used to laugh when my wife’s Texas family would call and say the temperature had dropped from 104 “all way down” to 98. I have finally realized that Texas heat is a scientific measurement, like the Richter Scale, and that each degree is ten times hotter than the one before it.

8. Boots are a necessity, not just a fashion statement. See #4. Enough said.

9. Jeans are acceptable wedding attire—just make sure you iron them.

10. Texans are proud of being Texans for a reason.

This is my favorite. I used to shake my head at all the Texas pride; shirts, hats and belt buckles with the word ‘Texas’ emblazoned on them. “Really?” I would ask. “Can’t these people remember where they live?” Now, I get it. My first visit to the Alamo cemented what being a Texan means—being strong, fair, honorable, and courageous, even unto death, and that’s something to be proud of.

One more thing—people really mean it when they say, “Welcome to Texas.”

Just remember…you’re not in [insert your home state here] anymore. I assume you came to Texas for a reason, so remember these 10 simple rules and you’ll be just fine here. Welcome to Texas!

Exiting European Climate Accord is Good for Texas

On JUNE 15, President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the Paris Climate Accord, clearly demonstrating his commitment to putting America first and prioritizing jobs for middle-class Americans.

President Trump is right to withdraw. The Paris Climate Accord is a bad, unfair deal for the American people and would put us at a severe economic disadvantage. While it allows other nations such as China to continue increas-

ing carbon emissions until 2030, the United States cut its carbon emissions by 26 to 28 percent below 2005 levels. Most astoundingly, the agreement allows India to double its coal usage by 2020.

According to a report sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, remaining in the Paris Climate Accord would cost the American economy and workers 6.5 million jobs and $3 trillion in economic growth by 2040. As you can see, while America’s economy would take a massive hit, other nations would continue business as usual. Under the agree-

ment, China can continue building hundreds of coalfired power plants. The Paris Climate Accord doesn’t get rid of coal jobs – it just moves them overseas.

The justification for killing millions of American jobs and causing trillions of dollars of damage to our economy is the potential to decrease global temperatures by no more than 0.17 degrees Celsius by 2100 – and that is only if implemented perfectly.

This accord is a classic example of what happens when policy is based on politically-driven rhetoric disguised as science.

Last November, the

American people made it clear they do not want climate alarmists with no regard for American jobs in charge of public policy.

Americans expect their public servants to represent their best interests, not the latest fad in the international community.

The environmental movement is losing creditability with the working American by prioritizing costly mandates and carbon-taxes over free-markets and innovation. It’s time we put Lubbock, Houston, and McAllen, Texas ahead of Paris, France.

Through advancements

in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, the free-market is reducing our carbon emissions by flooding the electric market with low-cost natural gas to generate electricity. Petra Nova, the world's largest post-combustion carbon capture facility, takes carbon from an existing coal-fueled power plant and uses it for the enhanced recovery of oil while sequestering CO2 underground. Human innovation and competitive markets are reducing carbon in the atmosphere, while ensuring energy remains cheap, plentiful, and reliable.

Remaining in the Paris

Climate Accord puts all this progress at risk, disproportionately affecting the United States and Texas, depleting our coffers and striking fear in the hearts of the hundreds of thousands of workers and their families in our booming energy sector.

Exiting the Paris Climate Accord and dismantling the so-called Clean Power Plan is a good start to an America first energy strategy. I am thankful that President Trump puts American workers above wayward science and country before climate alarmism.

Georgetown Mortgage – 15 years strong!

Georgetown Mortgage,

a.k.a. “the building with the big copper roof”, is located at 4819 Williams Drive just outside of Sun City, and celebrated their 15th year in business in 2016. Additionally, senior homebuyers can now use an FHA-insured reverse mortgage to purchase a home. Georgetown Mortgage was the first to close a Reverse Mortgage purchase in Texas, and they are currently the largest provider in the state. “Seniors can sell their current home, use some or all the proceeds from the sale as a down payment, and then use an FHA-insured reverse mortgage to finance the balance of the purchase price,” Barbara says. As with any reverse mortgage, the homeowner will not be required to make a monthly mortgage payment. New laws even make it possible to reverse purchase a home that is not built yet.

Travel Hacks for On-the-Go Parents (StatePoint) Getting from point A to point B with young kids is an adventure within itself. Whether by plane, train or automobile, parents are on the search for ways to make family travel a little less stressful.

To help, Sandy Chang, mom of two and founder of SandyALaMode.com, is offering her five best travel hacks. These hacks won't guarantee a tantrum-free trip, but they will help parents feel as prepared as possible for the journey ahead.

• Save space in the suitcase. Pack a few essential clothing items that can easily be mixed and matched. For example, nights can get chilly, so take one cute sweater that works well with all your child’s outfits.

The same idea applies to shoes. Opt for neutral colored shoes that match everything, instead of multiple pairs to coordinate with each outfit.

• Pack snacks that can also serve as entertainment: Nothing can set off a massive meltdown like hunger. Have a variety of food options at the ready, and bring less-mess snacks that add an element of fun. For example, certain cereals can be used for a stacking game, or turned into a necklace and then eaten. Fill a pouch with at least one unexpected treat for a fun surprise.

If you’re flying, bring empty bottles to fill with milk or water before boarding so your family can stay hydrated on the plane.

“I always make sure the kids are eating and drinking at takeoff and landing to help prevent their ears from hurting,” says Chang.

• Bring a lightweight, compact stroller.

Little kids have little legs that frequently get tired, which is why a stroller is necessary gear when traveling with children.

closing it many times and lugging it to different places.

Having an extra set of clothes in an easily accessible spot will be your saving grace when there are spills or accidents on-the-go.

• Ask older siblings to help. If they are old enough, kids can lend a hand and help take some of the burden off parents.

Before the trip, let children choose a backpack which they can use throughout the vacation to carry their own daily supplies and snacks.

Many kids love chipping in. “Austin absolutely loves pushing Vivian around in her stroller. I think it gives him a sense of control, and it’s just fun,” says Chang.

Traveling with children is never easy, but having a few well-planned hacks will help ensure a smoother journey and more fun for the entire family.

ASK THE JUDGE believe mentoring is one of the greatest gifts you can give and I have always sought out people to learn from and who can help me grow. It is common for judges to feel isolated because they are so limited in the communications and relationships they can maintain with lawyers and litigants. I am thankful that in Williamson County we have a judiciary that supports each other – from JP to District Judge.

3) What case do you love to have? The most challenging?

1) How do you maintain composure when faced with a truly heinous act or defendant?

Maintaining composure when faced with heinous acts or situations can be one of the most challenging aspects of court.

When in trial, it is especially important for a judge to not show any emotion or reaction that could be seen by the jury. I try various methods such as keeping my eyes averted or my head down when listening to testimony or viewing exhibits. I hope people know that I care about the case I am hearing, but that I have to maintain a level of impartiality that limits me from demonstrating my opinion. I have seen and heard many horrific things in my career as both a prosecutor and a judge. These experiences have helped me to maintain composure while on the bench.

2) Who is your mentor or favorite judge/ justice and why?

I have been fortunate over the course of my career to have many mentors along the way – too many to mention by name. I

I love my juvenile cases! It is so rewarding to be able to work with juveniles that have struggles and end up in the justice system. Juvenile law itself is very interesting. Part of it is governed by the Criminal Codes and part by the Family Code. It is a hybrid-type system which allows for more options and which strives to come to a result that is in the best interest of the child while also protecting the community. However, those can also be the most challenging when a very serious offense is involved or when a child has been a victim.

4) What do you miss about being a lawyer?

There are times I miss advocating for the state or on behalf of a victim as I did when I was a prosecutor. There is a different set of ethical rules judges must follow that limit the way you can be involved in a case. That can be frustrating at times because the judge is the referee, not one of the players. But, as much as I enjoyed being a practicing lawyer, I love being a judge!

Or do you feel like you sometimes have an instinct about danger?

This is one of those skills that gets developed over time I think. There are obvious times when someone says that and everything is clearly not fine (like when your wife is mad at you) and there are times where experience and training allow you to see and hear nuances that others might miss. Missing those nuances has the potential for something bad to happen.

What is the most intense split-second decision you ever had to make, or witnessed?

I have had to witness a deputy make the decision to shoot another person. The subject was a bank robber who was holding a hostage.

This is one of those decisions that had to be made in an instant that everyone else will get hours, days, weeks, and years to judge.

Given the dynamics of the situation, I think he made the best decision he could.

The hostage was saved, the deputy was cleared, and the bank robber is currently living in prison.

How do you train to make quick decisions, knowing how serious they could be and you won't get a do-over?

It is very difficult to simulate the stress of the real world in a training environment. To do this, we utilize what is called RBT (Reality Based Training). This is a scenario based training environment where as much realism as is possible is created. It is the closest we can come to creating that real world stress. In that RBT environment, officers can train to make quick decisions and here they can get a do over. The hope is that by making quick decisions in training and getting to do them repeatedly, then they are better suited to make the RIGHT quick decision in real life!

I know I already used that title for Mother’s Day. Although it was just God in Motherlove. This month I’m saying God in Mayberry, for obvious reasons I hope.

The older I get the more I have appreciated the TV Land channel and all the memories of my own childhood. Most specifically, all the shows I watched as a kid because they were what my dad watched.

Since there was only one television in the house (What?! Said all the millennials in the world), everyone basically watched whatever Dad watched.

That also explains why I like a few typically non-female-demographic things like Star Trek, Barney Miller, Sanford & Son, and Muhammad Ali. Although I did get to watch Brady Bunch when he wasn’t around.

My dad was predominantly Archie Bunker at times; Hawkeye Pierce some days, and a little John Wayne now and then. Definitely not a Mike Brady. When we were in trouble there were no sit-onthe-couch-to-share-feelings episodes. Just plain old run-for-your-life moments.

Those were good days and good TV. I liked Andy Griffith and thought Barney was funny but now that I’m older and I’m a parent, I have a new appreciation for Andy's kindness, wisdom and the way he always defused the insanity around him without taking credit for it.

One episode in Season 3, Opie got his feelings hurt because Andy had a new girlfriend and he was worried that his Pa wouldn’t like him as much someday. What Pa said stuck in my head almost word for word because of it’s brevity and profoundness.

“Come here a minute. I’m gon’ tell you somethin’ Ope and I want you to listen real carefully. You’re my young’un. And I love you more than anything or anybody in the whole world. And nothing or nobody can ever change that. You know it’s hard for me to tell you just how much you do mean to me cause you’re a part of me.

"Sometime I might get married again.

It will be somebody like a lot, somebody I love. But nothin’ or nobody will ever change things between me and you because you’re my son and we’re buddies."

Simple as that. You are my own and a part of me. You didn’t earn my love and affection because you didn’t have to, but

they are there for you until I’m gone. I know it’s just a bunch of TV writers and a script but I get choked up every time I see that one.

Even more so than the time Opie had to give up his milk money to a bully and Andy told him to stand his ground without letting on that he knew his son was being mistreated.

Again, even though they were actors, the scene where Andy looks Opie in the eye before he goes to school, presumably to be punched in the eye, is a true sense of a Father, loving his young’un enough to let him be a man, even if he’s only 6. Opie was so proud of his black eye and they shared a great moment.

I know life is not like TV but I like to think that dads really do love their kids like that, even if they can’t always show it.

You know, because they’re big strong men who merely wipe dust out of their eyes when they have an emotion.

Today, I know a lot of Andy Taylors around here. There’s Charlie, who everyone thinks is secretly a baby whisperer because his children are kind and want to please him out of love and respect. There’s Bill, who shepherds pretty much everyone he comes in contact with out of Godly love and genuine compassion, and he has that twinkle in his eye when he is being clever, just like the good Sheriff Taylor. There’s Robert, who plays the father role to hundreds of kids. He doesn't divide his love between them, he multiplies it.

My own dad has been gone nearly half my life and I'm nearly as old as he was when he passed away. Kind of shocking to think of that particular data. And while I feel confident I can love and protect my little boy like a bear and a good soldier, I hope he will always have his dad and a few good men to look up to as well.

Who else is going to share those priceless, "Don't tell your mother we did this" moments, or slip a $20 bill in a handshake before a date or a trip? Well, it was a 20 in my day, maybe Son will get a $50. Dads are great to share the first sip of beer, the first worm on a hook, the first driving lesson, the first "girls/boys suck" conversation, and that last minute getaway offer (just in case) right before the wedding.

Dads, enjoy your special day, the comfy chair, the big piece of chicken and sole control of the remote. Happy Father's Day!

He used this music during worship at the churches he served, particularly the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, and some of the most well known songs in hymnals today boast similar German roots.

Williamson began studying and playing the piano and organ at age 3—before he could even reach the pedals or read—and by age 13 was playing Bach chorales as his home Lutheran church organist. "Bach has been in my blood and my makeup ever since. As my career has gone on, much of it has been centered on his music."

Williamson was very active from 1988-1990 at the Oregon Bach Festival, which has been going strong for nearly 50 years, and he has somewhat modeled our Texas event after it. He was accepted into a conducting master class with OBF co-founder and Bach scholar/conductor Helmuth Rilling, and was selected three years in a row as an active festival conductor. "In the third year, Helmuth took me aside and invited me to compete at the 1991 European Music Festival in Stuttgart," Williamson says.

He went. And continued to achieve, and receive accolades and awards.

Among them was the 1991 European Music Festival in Stuttgart, for which the International Bach Academy invites artists, ensembles, lecturers and scientists from around the world. Dr. Williamson finished as one of three finalist winners out of 63 conductors—the only American.

"TBF was founded on the premise of bringing Bach to life. I want to explain and share my passion for this music—nurtured throughout my life and career—with the people of Georgetown." He assures us the Festival will have something for everyone.

"It has music for string quartet, wind ensemble, chamber orchestra, choir with full orchestra, slow and up-tempo music and wonderful arias for soloists." There is even a cantata by Bach called the "Coffee Cantata," a humorous take on peoples' love for coffee - the closest thing to an opera that Bach wrote!

Free Concerts

Music lovers can meet Dr. Williamson, and get a whisper of the great music to come, at two free concerts. Live Music at the Library concert series will feature mezzo soprano Keely Rhodes and pianist Khanh Pham, both TBF featured performers, in a program of arias by J.S. Bach and Mozart. The concert is a gift of Friends of the Library, June 18 at 2pm.

On June 30, at 12:00 noon, the 26th District Courtroom at the historic Courthouse will host members of TBF's Artisan Quartet and Wild Basin Winds.

The program will be the Oboe Quartet in F Major, KV 370 and the Clarinet Quintet in A Major, KV 581, both by Mozart. This concert is presented by the Texas Bach Festival.

Not surprisingly, it seems Williamson is one of those people with a golden touch.

Not only does he conduct, sing, play multiple instruments, teach voice, piano and conducting and administrate music programs, he

These free concerts also represent the opportunity for Dr. Williamson to share the mission and activities of TBF, build audience and ensure support and success for the festival, as well as enjoyment of the music.

Tickets for the concerts are $25 for general admission and are available now at TexasBachFestival.org.

Patrons may choose to purchase seats for all four concerts at a discount, and

there are additional discounts for seniors, students and active duty military.

Once the festival grows, as anticipated, the TBF Board hopes to be able to give back to the community by supporting youth music programs and holding vocal and conducting master classes.
