Kids Helping Kids Milestone

by Ann Marie Ludlow

Georgetown has many

things that put it on the national scene; the billion-dollar SportClips franchise, and our globetrotting green energy Mayor for starters. But over the past ten years, the service organization begun by a group of athletes to help kids in need has grown across the state and now even has a federal trademark. I am talking, of course, about The Locker: Kids Helping Kids. This year, The Locker is in 17 schools across the state, adds new chapters on a regular basis, is celebrating its 10th anniversary and has many milestones to mark the occasion and growth that continues practically exponentially. Chief among the changes that mark the milestone is the new Chairman of the Board, Michael Gebhardt. Michael started out as a volunteer for The Locker when he was a student at Southwestern University. “I was invited to help out at Camp Crosby so I worked the golf station between football and basketball. I

was immediately hooked when I saw the look on kids’ faces when they learned to hit the ball and discovered, potentially, a new life passion.” Michael became Board Secretary while still at Southwestern. Now a graduate with a full-time job at Dell, he is an adult member of the board and is the Chairman. He oversees their quarterly meetings and is a key piece of management and strategies moving forward. "I also enjoy participating in the many activities and events that the Foundation puts on and we're excited to be invited to or benefactors of other organizations who are giving back through The Locker." Founder Karen Crosby says, “What better way to epitomize who we are as an organization? We started in 2008 with a group of kids and five years later became an official non-profit. The growth in our second five years mirrors our early success an we are just going to keep getting better. We are all about student leadership and kids helping kids. Having one of our former

The Locker Board Chair Michael Gebhardt and founder Karen Crosby at their new offices on Dawn Drive in Georgetown. students leading our Board brings us full circle.” The Locker recently held the annual Camp Crosby, introducing kids to new sports, and they are preparing for the annual Tailgate party June 28 at the Georgetown Community Center. While the original mission of the Locker was to provide hygiene products and sundries for kids in need, they have grown to the point that they are able to provide nearly anything a student might need for special milestones and even things that support personal confidence and self-respect. “There are so many things that teens

need for this special time in life to make memories and foster self-esteem. Even if they are not homeless or in critical need, we help with things like graduation caps and gowns, AP testing fees, or even help for a senior trip.” Crosby adds, “It really doesn’t matter what a kid might need. If we can help, we will. We don’t ask questions or require that they demonstrate the need, they just need to ask.” Both agree that The Locker is a win-win for everyone. “Students who volunteer and help out are learning leadership while demonstrating compassion,” Crosby says. “Our

bylaws mandate that our Board include more kids than adults and I am constantly impressed with the discernment and understanding they show when they make decisions.” Gebhardt says, “At 24, I’m acquiring professional skills and a C-level understanding of non-profit organizations but I’m also helping people every day. The combination is invaluable.” Crosby and her daughter Ashley are now employees of the organization but says they don’t market The Locker. “People call us every day because a student has heard about us and they want to start their

own. It’s amazing what this generation feels and how motivated they are to help each other. We just focus on our mission, making it replicable and supporting each school from our Foundation headquarters.” The Locker Foundation is now in its own office space on Dawn Drive and continues to collect sundries and raise money for programs and scholarships. To participate, visit TheLocker. info to purchase a ticket for the Tailgate or donate to the Foundation to help kids help more kids.

W&W organizes outings and field trips just for fun, to allow families to spend quality time in fun and respite. "Kids love to see other kids who are just like them; it's okay if mom doesn't have hair or dad uses a port. Children like to fit in and these group activities make them feel safe and accepted." Halder encourages any family to make the call as soon as there is a diagnosis. "Kids are intuitive and if we don't tell them the truth, they will make one up for themselves that is likely worse. When you start getting notes from the school, the problem is already there. Children are high risk for social, academic and emotional symptoms so our mission is to prevent or mitigate the struggle and help children continue to thrive."

Visit WondersAndWorries.org for information; you can also refer yourself or a friend on the site. "When you're sick, it's hard to just get dinner on the table and you don't want to read a bunch of brochures. Just give us a call to connect right away." W&W also has volunteer opportunities and fundraising events year-round for those who want to help. TRANSPORTATION PROJECT UPDATE ~ MAYOR DALE ROSS

Mobility and traffic

improvements in our fast-growing city are a high priority for many of you. In 2015 years ago, Georgetown voters approved a $105M set of transportation projects to make key improvements. The election authorized the City to plan, design, or construct 20 transportation projects over 10 years. An update on projects underway or starting soon:

Southwest Bypass

The City’s portion of the Southwest Bypass project is nearly complete. This 2.4mile arterial is a north-south connector aligning with

D.B. Wood Rd and extending from University Ave to Leander Rd. (photo right) The new $18.3M road—the first 2015 bond project to start construction—will be completed and open to traffic this summer. Another segment is being built by the County; connecting Leander Rd to I-35 is slated to be complete in 2020. Southwest Bypass will create a loop around the southwest quadrant of the city from I-35 to University Ave.

Rivery Blvd Ext

This road extends Rivery Blvd to the north from Williams Dr to Northwest Blvd. Construction begins this summer. The new fourlane road will provide an alternative to Williams Dr and offer another route in the busy area around Williams Dr and I-35. The road also provides a link from I-35 to the Rivery confer-

ence center and retail area and connects to a planned new bridge over I-35 at Northwest Blvd.

Northwest Blvd Bridge

The Northwest Blvd project reconstructs the road from Fontana Dr to Austin Ave and includes a new bridge over I-35. The bridge will be a new east-west connection over the interstate and an alternative to Williams Dr. This 2015 bond project connects with Rivery Blvd to the west and FM 971 on the east. Design and right-of-way acquisition are nearing completion this summer. Construction is expected to begin this winter.

FM 971 realignment FM971 will be realigned from Austin Ave eastward to Gann St in order to connect with the Northwest Blvd road and bridge proj-

ect. This will allow FM 971 to link to Northwest Blvd and become an east-west connection across I-35. Design work for this 2008 road bond project should be completed this summer.

FM 1460

The FM1460 project by TDOT is a new 3.5 mile highway segment from Quail Valley Dr to University Blvd. The new four lane road also provides a north-south alternate and reliever to Interstate 35. Funding for the project includes $13M in Georgetown 2008 transportation bonds as well $11.4M in federal funding, $7.8M in state funding, and $2.6M from the City of Round Rock and Williamson County. The new roadway is expected to be complete later this year.

Airport Road

Airport Rd is being reconstructed as a 5-lane roadway from Lakeway Dr to Halmar Cv. It is funded by the Georgetown Transportation Enhancement Corp. Construction is scheduled to start this summer.

Sidewalks

Construction should begin later this year on new sidewalks along 7th and 8th Streets between Maple and Church Streets. The sidewalks will improve pedes-

trian and ADA accessibility between Southwestern University and the Square. An open house meeting was held May 1 to get feedback on the project from affected property owners. The 2015 transportation bond package includes $10 million for sidewalks over 10 years to address priority projects identified in the Sidewalks Master Plan. HOW TO FIND RETIREE TRAVEL PERKS Dear Savvy Senior, What types of travel discounts are available to older travelers? I just retired and am interested in learning about travel deals for people over 60. Ready To Go Dear Ready, There are literally thousands of different travel-related discounts available to retirees that usually start anywhere between the ages 50 and 65. These discounts – typically ranging between 5 and 25 percent off – can add up to save you hundreds of dollars on your next trip. Here’s how you can find them.

Ways to Save

The first thing to know is that most businesses don’t advertise them, but many give senior discounts just for the asking, so don’t be shy. You also need to be aware that when it comes to senior travel bargains, the “senior discount,” if available, may not always be the best deal. Hotels, resorts, airlines and cruise lines, for example, offer advanced bookings along with special deals and promotions from time to time that may be a lower rate than what the senior discount is. Before you book, always ask about

the lowest possible rate and the best deal available. Another way retirees with flexible schedules can save is to be flexible when you travel. Last minute travel deals can offer huge savings, as well as traveling during off-season or offpeak times, and avoiding holidays. Club memberships can also garner you a wide variety of travel bargains. AARP, for example has dozens of travel discounts available on hotels, rental cars, cruises and vacation packages – see AARPadvantages.com. Annual AARP membership fees are $16 or less if you join for multiple years. Or, if you don’t agree with AARP, there are alternative organizations you can join like the Seniors Coalition or the American Seniors Association that offer discounts on hotels and rental cars.

Types of Discounts Here’s an abbreviated rundown of some of the different travel discounts you can expect to find.

Transportation

For airline travel, Southwest has fully refundable senior fares to passengers 65 and older, and British

Airways offers AARP members $65 off economy travel and $200 off business club travel. American, United and Delta also offer senior fares in certain markets but are extremely limited. For traveling by train, Amtrak provides a 10 percent discount to travelers 65-plus, and a 10 percent discount to passengers over age 60 on cross-border services operated jointly by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada. Greyhound bus lines also offers a 5 percent discount to passengers 62 and older. And most car rental companies offer 10 to 25 percent discounts to customers who belong to membership organizations like AARP or AAA.

Hotels

Many U.S. hotels offer senior discounts (at varying ages) usually ranging between 5 and 15 percent off. For example, Marriott offers a 15 percent discount to travelers 62 and older at over 4,000 locations

worldwide. And Wyndham hotel group offers 60-plus guests best available rate discounts.

obtain this pass in person at one of the federal recreation sites for $80, or online for

Restaurants

Some restaurant chains offer senior discounts, ranging from free drinks, to senior menus, to discounts off your total order. National chains that offer these deals include Burger King, Chili’s, Chick-fil-A, Dunkin Donuts, Golden Corral, IHOP and Wendy’s. Offers can vary by location.

Cruises

Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise lines offer discount rates to cruisers 55 and over.

Entertainment and Attractions

Most movie theaters, museums, zoos, aquariums, public golf courses and even ski slopes provide reduced admission to seniors over 60 or 65. If you’re 62-plus, you’re also eligible for the “Senior Pass,” which provides a lifetime entry to 2,000 national parks and recreation sites. You can

granite wheels, drivers used wood and spokes for a really (really) long time. Today, drivers enjoy much greater power and weight and with that comes the need for stronger, heavier aluminum and alloys to help us explore the world faster, safer and—of course— look better doing it. If you live in Central Texas, there is no better place to explore, purchase and repair your wheels than Jarrell's genuine mom-n-pop shop, Miles Tire and Wheel. Owners Bobby and Dawn Schoonover truly have tires in their blood. Bobby started working for a neighbor when he was 12 years old and he and Dawn opened their own tire and wheel business in 2005.

Miles, their youngest son and the namesake of the company, began working with his dad when he was just 7. Now a dad himself, Miles is at the forefront of the company's new retail expansion, which enables MTW to also be a onestop shop for getting your car on the road. Bobby says, "I love this business; doing something different every day. And our customers love our work. They are usually so happy with their repaired wheel, they ask us to do the rest of the them." Wheels can sustain damage from accidents, or curbs or they can lose their finish or rust from chemical damage at car washes. In addition to repairing damage, MTW changes tires while you

wait. They also do powdercoat color changes and bake in their in-house ovens. "Powdercoating is tedious, time consuming, and demanding," Bobby says. "But once finished, you’re rewarded with something that’s far more durable than traditional paint." "Wheel repair is critical to being safe on the road," Dawn explains. "It's interesting how often we talk to people about the tire, the black rubber part, and the wheel, the aluminum center. If you hit a curb, your tire might have a rash and it still works. But if you bend the wheel, we are the only place in Central Texas that can repair it to save you the cost of a new one. The equipment is a big investment and we take great care to train

our staff professionally. And, now we have added retail for those who want new or custom wheels. Many people come to us because ours are a solid upgrade from factory wheels or they just like to personalize and get the perfect look for their vehicle." They have a great staff who drive six routes every day to pick up from customers and a second shift of experts who weld, repair and paint in the afternoon and stay until everything is finished for next day delivery back to the client. MTW has enjoyed great word-of-mouth exposure thanks to happy customers and great service but they are excited about the competition in the retail wheel business and they are looking forward to gaining new

Town & Country

customers. Miles says, "Come see us if your car has vibrations while driving, tires are losing air or there are cracks or bad spots on your wheels' finish." The Schoonovers chose Jarrell because they like the community and the people and they all enjoy working with family. Bobby says, "We have three kids and 7 grandkids and they all live close. This is the legacy we will pass to them, although we don't plan to ever retire. We love working and we love this business." Their drivers do pickups throughout Central Texas; Williamson County, Temple, Belton, Killeen and Lampasas. They provide pickups and installs at dealerships and bring them back the next day.

THIS IS ONE GREAT TIRE SHOP. NOT ONLY DID I GET GREAT TIRES AT A GREAT PRICES. THEY HAD ME IN AND OUT IN 45 MINUTES. I DRIVE A 3500 DUALLY. THEY BEAT THE PRICE ON EVERY QUOTE. PLUS, THEIR APPOINTMENTS RUN LIKE CLOCKWORK. THEY DID SUCH A GOOD JOB ON THE TIRES. I RECENTLY TOOK MY TRUCK BACK IN FOR CUSTOM POWDER COATED RIMS. ASK THEM ABOUT THEIR CUSTOM ABILITIES. THEY HAVE MY TIRE BUSINESS FROM NOW ON. THANKS MILES AND ASHLEY AND THE ENTIRE TEAM! ~GARY S.
