Central Texas

One of the most picturesque and recognizable buildings on the historic square, the building located at 701 Main St. in Georgetown was constructed as the San Gabriel Masonic Lodge No. 89 in 1900 at a cost of $8500. The cornerstone, laid July 6, 1900, was donated by George Washington Glasscock, the son of the pioneer who donated the land for the City. When the “Great Hurricane” hit on September 9, 1900 there was concern that the storm winds would destroy the partially-constructed building. It was completed in December 1900, and became the flagship for its contractor, Belford Lumber Company who gained notoriety for building many of Georgetown’s historic “hurricane-proof” homes. Over the years, in addition to the Masons, the building has been home to professional offices, a drug store, the Post Office, a diner and soda fountain, several restaurants including Georgetown’s first 4-star restaurant, and a furniture store. Today it is the home of Gumbo’s, Georgetown’s premier destination for seafood, steak and Cajun food. On the Historic Square in Georgetown (Pg 4)

The historic Walburg Mercantile building, now Walburg Restaurant, was built in 1882 by Mr. Hy Doering from Walburg, Germany. After migrating to America as a young man, he purchased acreage north of Georgetown, Texas, and named the town after his birthplace.
