Farewell Tribute to Retiring GPD Captain Evelyn McLean

Evelyn McLean and newly-sworn Captain Amy Janik, who will succeed McLean as Captain at GPD

Evelyn McLean has had a year filled with

milestones already and she is showing no signs of slowing down. After 26 years in law enforcement, "when some of her fellow officers were still in diapers," and 21 years with the Georgetown Police Department, she celebrated her retirement, sometimes tearfully, May 31 at the Safety Center surrounded by fellow officers, volunteers, friends and family. McLean began her law enforcement career in 1991 as a Communications Operator

Georgetown Police Chief Wayne Nero, Evelyn McLean, Mayor Dale Ross, Commissioner Valerie Covey and City Manager David Morgan attended the ceremony at the Safety Center May 31.

In 1998 she served on the Williamson County Gang Task Force and was named “Officer of the Year”. She has held a command-level position for 17 years with the Georgetown Police Department and was the first female Captain in the department in 2011. Captain McLean describes her career as both rich and rewarding. "This career was never about the money or the power for me. It was for the adventure. And there's a lot of adventure in the job we do." As the Republican nominee for Justice of the Peace Precinct 3, she has no plans to slow down in her service to the community and take on a new adventure in leadership. "Leaders," she said, "we need to remember that policing is about people. It is people who save lives, find lost Congressman John Carter, hosted by Jimmy and Sheila Jacobs, stopped in Georgetown for fellowship and children, protect the weak, fundraising for his general election campaign. for the Pflugerville Police Department, but over time realized she didn’t want to sit behind a console while “hot calls” were coming in. She trained at the Austin County Sheriff’s academy, began her career with the Manor PD, worked full-time for the Taylor police department, and later relocated to Georgetown PD.

at and punched and stabbed and shot. It’s people who may even pay the greatest price of all. Our job as leaders is to serve them – to look after them and to enable them to do their jobs to the very best of their abilities." Mayor Dale Ross proclaimed May 31, 2018 Evelyn McLean Day in Georgetown, reading aloud; "Whereas, McLean has been a devoted, compassionate and intelligent leader who turns outward to look at the community and assess their needs and the citizens of Georgetown have benefited greatly from her talents, knowledge, experience and expertise and she will be sorely missed." Georgetown, however, will not miss her for long. After a vacation to celebrate her retirement and her 25th wedding anniversary with her husband Jim, she will be back on the campaign trail for the November General Election and possibly another first—the first female JP3 in Williamson County. “I would like to continue the Teen Court program already in place. I have worked with our City’s Teen Court program for many years. It is a positive for the community and an across-the-board win-win.” Visit EvelynForJudge.com for more.

GISD to Build Secure Entrances School is just out for the summer but the Board of Trustees is working to ensure that security measures are improved at all campuses when students return in the fall. The Board approved a contract to build secured entrances at East View and Georgetown high schools this summer. Secured entrances serve as a single point of entry for visitors to sign in and provide identification before being granted access to the building. “We have been working

to renovate entrances at all of our campuses to limit how and where visitors can gain access to our schools,” Scott Stribling, GISD board president said. “Securing our high schools this summer accelerates our plan to fortify all campuses. It’s critical that we act now to prepare them for the fall.” The contract was awarded to Braun & Butler Construction for $430,000 and is being funded with reserves from the 2015 bond. The company is also working to build secured entrances this summer at two middle schools and the GHS Annex. Upon completion of this project, every campus will be outfitted with secure entrances.

Williamson County opened the doors

to the new North Campus Facility on SE Inner Loop May 25. Home to EMS, Fire

Marshal Special Ops, Mobile Outreach, Wireless Communications and the Sheriff's Office vehicle storage and inspection area, this campus provides much needed space for all departments and allowed them to move from antiquated facilities that no longer met the needs of our growing county. With more than 60,000 sq/ft, the multiple buildings include state-of-the-art training space (photo right) and acute "wet" response areas, a safe place for law enforcement to conduct searches for contraband, Hazmat assessments, centralized wireless communications and administration for EMS

operations. Commissioner Valerie Covey explains the concept was a long time coming and she was pleased that the Court was able to come up with the $21.5M funding to help so many departments and employees in our

first response agencies. Still to come is a fueling station that will add to the county capacity and support during emergency situations and a Sheriff's Training facility in Hutto, scheduled to open July 19.

GETTING KIDS ON TRACK

Most parents take note of their children's physical and intellectual milestones like walking and reading but how do we know if they are up to speed emotionally or spiritually? KATHY KELLER is a member of Open Road Biker Church and has developed a course to help parents do just that. With a background in child development, 30 years teaching in Georgetown ISD and NAEYC accreditation, she has adapted a new, free seminar with lessons from Sissy Goff's Are My Kids on Track? Instruction focuses on spiritual and emotional growth at all ages and is open to anyone planning, raising or working with kids. She says this particular class was inspired by the frequency of shooting incidents but the idea goes back many years; "I believe God spoke to me and I asked him to use me however He could—whatever I can do to make a difference. The way to do that is to go back to my teaching roots." Keller is Director of Professional Development with Together 4 Children, a non-profit in Austin that promotes success of early childhood teachers, center administrators, coaches and assessors who serve vulnerable children and families. "We see every day the importance of social, emotional and spiritual growth, as much as academics and physical." Her goal for the seminar is to encourage parents, give them tools and strategize to help them be a positive force in their kids lives in a Christian home. "Even if we think things are going smoothly, there is always something to learn and it is uplifting to know others share our challenges."

Elect Wilcox for Lower Electric Rates by Mike Payne

What is a newspaper in

Williamson County doing endorsing Burnet County resident, Donna Holland Wilcox in the race for the Pedernales Electric Cooperative’s Board of Directors, District 1seat? (District 1 includes much of Burnet County and portions of Williamson, Lampasas, and Travis counties.) The answer is simple. In her own words, Wilcox says, “I will bring another fiscally conservative voice to the organization and represent all members who expect the co-op to prioritize providing reliable electricity at the lowest cost

possible.” With a company as large and spread out as PEC, these cost savings won’t happen “just because”. Wilcox has over 25 years of experience in business development, marketing, and management in the private sector, including participation in real estate projects. Wilcox says, “Everything I intend to work on as a PEC District Board member will be geared toward lowering electricity costs for our members (customers). I intend to take the focus off the co-op itself and move it back to the members and their needs. In doing so, we must reduce debt, review policies that are outdated, improve customer service, including line extension costs and services, billing, procedures, and other activities that will add even more value to the customer.” In summation, she says, “As a Board member, I intend to think outside of the box. After all, PEC is the largest co-op in the nation, and as such, should be leading the way by resetting industry standards that should always be focused

on lowering end user electricity costs." Given the experience, dedication, and the knowledge Ms. Wilcox possesses, and after observing her work ethic and reputation in both the community and at the co-op, it is the opinion of the Editorial Board of the Advocate that Donna Wilcox is the right person to carry the baton into the future for citizens of PEC District 1. Additionally, it’s even more than a skill set that decides how a company will treat its customers. Wilcox currently serves as the Director of Development for Faith Academy of Marble Falls, where she leads fundraising, public relations, and marketing strategies for the private Christian school. If you live in Williamson County, and are provided electricity from Pedernales Electric Co-op, remember to vote. Not casting a vote in this race is a sure way to see your electricity rates increase. Go online at www.pec.coop to see how to vote!
