Lighting of the Square GORDON LOGAN HONORED p. A3

JACK FROST TOURNEY TIPS OFF p. B1

The rain didn’t keep Georgetown resi-

dents and out-of-towners from celebrating the holiday season Friday at the annual Lighting of the Square event. This year’s event was bigger and brighter thanks to additional lights added to trees on the courthouse lawn sponsored by Georgetown Utility Systems with help from Williamson County and The Williamson Museum. Williamson County Judge Dan A. Gattis and Georgetown Mayor Dale Ross were joined by 9-year old Lily Vaughn who was the winner of the first-ever Lighting of the Square short essay contest sponsored by the City of Georgetown, Williamson County, The Williamson Museum, and the Williamson County Sun. In honor of the City of Georgetown’s green energy plans to purchase all of its energy from wind and solar sources by 2017, Lily best answered the question, “Why I am proud

Georgetown has the greenest Christmas in Texas.” Lily’s essay reflected on a smiling Earth using energy from the sun. She is a member of her school’s writing team and her teacher encouraged her to submit an essay for extra credit. “I would maybe like to be a writer someday,” she says. “But for now I’m just excited to be a part of the tradition of Georgetown.” Entertainment during the Lighting of the Square was provided by the Austin Carolers and there was plenty of hot cocoa and cider for everyone. Stores stayed open late for holiday shopping and a preview of Small Business Saturday. Williamson County Brown Santa provided photos with Santa in the historic Courthouse after the lighting event, and they collected toy donations for Brown Santa and the Georgetown Police Department Blue Santa. Residents and tourists can look forward to many holiday events and activities over the next few weeks; VisitGeorgetown.com.
