Welcome from FIDIC’s president and CEO

A very warm welcome from us both to this 2022 FIDIC Gala Dinner and Awards event. We are delighted to be back together with you all in person as we celebrate, showcase, reward and highlight the achievements and successes of the engineering, construction and infrastructure industry on a global scale. Our prestigious FIDIC Project Awards recognise member firms and their clients across the globe and the important impact their projects have on social, economic and environmental quality of life around the world. Our MA Excellence Awards highlight the achievements and successes of our international member associations and the work they do representing the global consulting industry, while our Future Leaders Awards showcase and promote the outstanding achievements of future leaders in the consulting engineering industry worldwide. We cannot wait to celebrate with you all as we highlight a year of success. That success is all the more remarkable because, as we all know, it has been achieved during a period of unprecedented challenge and change for our industry. The resilience and continued commitment to excellence that has been shown over the past 12 months demonstrates once again what a brilliant industry we are part of and we are delighted to recognise its success with these FIDIC Awards 2022. Isabelle is an award-winning journalist with more than 20 years’ experience and has covered many big business and political stories in Europe during that time. Most recently she anchored prime-time evening news on Euronews. She has also traveled the world interviewing countless heads of state and government, CEOs and celebrities, generating more than two million views on YouTube. Isabelle moderates at high level events, including the first ever EU presidential debate, deep dives at the Davos World Economic Forum and fireside chats with the CEOs of Coca Cola, Tesco and L’Oreal at the Consumer Goods Forum. She has presented award ceremonies for the UN and chaired a private lunch with former German chancellor Angela Merkel and European leaders. Her interviews include presidents and prime ministers from Russia, Iran, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Italy and Portugal, as well as the heads of the UN and the European Commission. She has spoken to the King of Jordan, the prince and princess of Monaco, interviewed Richard Branson, Andrea Bocelli, Mike Tyson and Karl Lagerfeld to name but a few. Before heading to Euronews, Isabelle worked for CNN, APTN and Reuters.

Monash University Woodside Building for Technology and Design (Australia)

Viaduct V3 of the Duplication of the Tamoios Highway (Brazil)

Client: Construtora Queiroz Galvão. Engineer: Engecorps Engenharia. Viaduct V3 is situated in a region of difficult access, in a horizontal curve of 500m length with a slope of 2.60%, crossing the valley formed by rugged topography with a maximum height of 65m. Conceived in two different structural typologies, the viaduct has five spans and four central supports, in addition to the abutments, with a total length of 310m and a constant width of 12.6m.

Chongqing Rail Transit Loop Line (China)

Loop Line is 50.88km long with 33 stations, linking five major city groups and three high-speed railway stations. It crosses the Yangtze River twice and the Jialing River once. Kunming (China) - Vientiane (Laos) Railway (China)

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, located in the south east of Chengdu City, is the largest international aviation hub in the west of China and a super-hub airport with rail links. To accommodate 50 million annual passenger throughput, the airport has been designed to include three runways, a passenger terminal building covering floor area of 710,000 square metres and other related supporting facilities.

New Construction of Xiong’an Railway Station and Related Projects of the Intercity Railway from Beijing to Xiong’an (China)

Newly Built Fuzhou Pingtan High-Speed Railway (China)

Located in the south east coast of Fujian, China, this project is a large-sized comprehensive transportation facility connecting Pingtan Island (the fifth largest island in China) with the Mainland.

Hang-Shao-Tai High-speed Railway, the first privately controlled high-speed railway demonstration project in China, has well-featured innovation, greenness, userbility and smartness.

Engineer: Zhejiang Development & Planning Institute.

Engineer: China Railway Design Corporation. The comprehensive transportation hub of Xiong’an Station has a total construction area of 475,200 square meters (about three Berlin Central Railway Stations). It is a modern green station that is intensive and efficient, integrated and innovative, intelligent and open, and humanistic ecology.

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport construction project (China)

Engineer: China Railway Siyuan Survey and Design Group Co., China Railway Major Bridge Reconnaissance & Design Institute Co.

Hangzhou-Shaoxing-Taizhou High-speed Railway (China)

The total length is 10.33km, which is a combination of bridges and tunnel, with six lanes in two directions, a length of 4.14km bridge across the Yangtze River, a 1.75 km length of Jiajiang tunnel and 4.4km of other sections. The main bridge across the river is a three-tower cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 2 × 600m, which is possible for the future shipping development.

Engineer: Changjiang Survey, Planning, Design and Research Co. Wudongde Hydropower Station is the seventh largest hydropower station in the world. The total installed capacity is 10,200MW, and the average annual power generation is about 38.91 billion kWh.

The LHD Modular Ocean Tidal Current Energy Power Generation Station is the first power generation project in China which has achieved continuous connection to the grid in tidal current energy field. Yunnan Niulan River - Dianchi Lake Water Replenishment Project (China)

Nanjing Jiangxinzhou Yangtze River Bridge (China)

Client: Yunnan Shuitou Niulan River - Dianchi Lake Water Replenishment Engineering Co.

Engineer: POWERCHINA Kunming Engineering Corporation Limited. The project comprises three main parts, namely the Deze Reservoir with a capacity of 448 million m³, the 90MW-capacity Ganhe Pump Station and a 115.34km-long water conveyance channel.

Engineer: Central & Southern China Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute Co. The project is of semi-underground structure, with water treatment standard of quasi-class IV surface water, sewage treatment capacity of 320,000 t/variation factor of 1.6, sludge moisture content of less than 40% and sludge treatment capacity of 64 t/d.

Project of Gushu Water Purification Plant (China)

The project was completed over a period of seven years, covering a total built length of 35.5km from east to west. Engineering, Procurement, and Construction for Phase II

Client: Border Roads Organisation. Engineer: Intercontinental Consultants and Technocrats. The 9.02km Atal Tunnel is certified in the World Book of Records as the world’s longest two-lane single tube, bi-directional tunnel located at an altitude of 3,000m above MSL. It provides all-weather connectivity to Leh region, Lahaul and Spiti valleys.

Cable 1, Ile de France (France)

Client: Ile-de-France Mobilités. Engineer: Egis Rail, Egis Group. The operation consists of building the first ropeway in Ile de France, between Créteil and Villeneuve-Saint-Georges in the Val-de-Marne department. Cable cars are a positive impact transport mode. The project extends over 4.5km, calls at five stations and passes over urban barriers such as railway lines and a major highway to de-isolate several communities.

Atal Tunnel (India)

Engineer: TYPSA and CEMOSA.

Wiwilí Bridge is a strategic roadway connection between the central and northern regions of Nicaragua. It provides a new and reliable transportation infrastructure to more than 200,000 inhabitants.

Sustainable land management in Somaliland (Somalia)

The New Ulaanbaatar International Airport (NUBIA) construction project aimed to construct a new capital airport on 2,400 ha of land, a single runway (3,600m x 45m) and a new terminal building (35,300 sq.m of floor area) with a two million annual passenger capacity, 30km south west of Ulaanbaatar city.

New Ulaanbaatar International Airport Construction Project

The project considers the necessary infrastructure, equipment and commissioning to provide transportation services through Guadalajara LRT Line 3 connecting the most populated neighborhoods of Zapopán, Guadalajara and Tlaquepaque.

Client: SCT (Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transporte) and SITEUR (Sistema de Tren Eléctrico Urbano).

Civil Aviation Authority of Mongolia.

Client: Government of Nicaragua.

Engineer: CES Consulting Engineers Salzgitter.

The objective of the project is to protect the Biji catchment area from erosion and to improve rainwater harvesting and storage of water for drinking, food security and livestock. As the catchment is linked to the aquifers which represent the main water resource for Hargeisa population, groundwater recharge will be enhanced by appropriate measures as well.

Rockefeller Refuge Gulf Shoreline Stabilisation (USA)

Client: New York State Empire State Development. Engineer: Severud Associates Consulting Engineers. Moynihan Train Hall expands New York City’s Penn Station across Eighth Avenue and into the landmark James A. Farley Post Office, designed by McKim, Mead and White in 1912 as a sister to their original Pennsylvania Station.

Client: Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority of Louisiana / Bevin Barringer. Engineer: HDR. The $34m Rockefeller Refuge Gulf Shoreline Stabilisation protects one of America’s most critical biological habitats with a four-mile lightweight aggregate core breakwater, the first in an open gulf environment. Lick Run Valley Conveyance System and Greenway (USA)

Client: Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati. Engineer: Strand Associates. The Lick Run project is one of the largest infrastructure projects for reducing CSOs in the US. This 1.5-mile corridor serves a 2,700-acre watershed, providing flood control, stormwater conveyance, storage and reuse (sustainability) and water quality treatment through an innovative, multi-cell open-channel design integrated into a civic park.

Client: University of Pennsylvania Health System. Engineer: HDR. The largest project in Penn Medicine history, the Pavilion, is a $1.6bn, 17-story, state-of-the-art hospital facility with a 690-stall subterranean parking garage topped by a 1.5 million squarefoot high-rise superstructure. It’s home to 504 private patient rooms and 47 operating/interventional rooms.

Pettit Lake was once a breeding habitat for Snake River sockeye salmon. In the 1960s, a new barrier blocked the species’ 900-mile migration route. At one time, 150,000 sockeye salmon returned to central Idaho but by 1990 just four returned. With the fish nearing extinction, the Shoshone-Bannock tribes led an effort to list the salmon as an endangered species.

Cua Hoi Bridge Project (Vietnam)

Client: Project Management Unit No. 6 - Ministry of Transport and Communication. Engineer: BRITEC - a subsidiary of Transport Engineering Design. The main bridge is extradosed structure with span layout of (86+153+86)m, providing a large navigational clearance of BxH=120x20m. The main girder is a pre-stressed reinforced concrete continuous structure, constructed by the balanced cantilever method.

The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) Mid-Coast Extension of the UC San Diego Blue Line Trolley project features an 11-mile extension of the San Diego light rail system.

Engineer: Freese and Nichols and HDR.

Client: City of Atlanta and The Trust for Public Land.

The new $40m Rodney Cook Sr Park in Atlanta showcases how engineering can improve community health and economic wellbeing by creating a vibrant, sustainable green space that doubles as an innovative vehicle for separating a combined sewer system, preventing flooding and improving water quality through natural filtration. The Danish Association of Consulting Engineers (FRI) initiative of establishing an FRI Forum for Diversity and Equality was, during a time when the shortage of qualified labour is a systemic challenge for the industry, a crucial step in attracting a broader group of candidates to its member firms and retaining current employees even when their personal situations change.

The ACEZ Future Leaders Group (FL)  Quarterly Newsletter 2022 provided relief to what had been a long period of low engagement, lack of enthusiasm and demoralisation among FLs, which had gworsened at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. The current crop of leaders were very eager to turn the dormancy of the group around by sharing more information, creating more engagement and encouraging  more participation of FLs in local and international consulting engineering industry conversations.

Association of Consulting and Engineering New Zealand ACE New Zealand’s evidence-based advocacy to government on the need to adjust its Covid-19 border settings to allow the recruitment of essential construction/infrastructure skills at a time when the borders were closed. It had a tangible and meaningful impact for members and the broader sector and raised their profile and built trust and influence with decision-makers.

Rådgivende Ingeniørers Forening (Association of Consulting Engineers) - Norway Rådgivende Ingeniørers Forening (Norwegian Association of Consulting Engineers) has 80% of all consulting engineering companies in Norway as members. Over the last ten years. RIF has cultivated the role as a societal advisor and has worked to provide fact-based reports on the condition of various critical areas of Norwegian society.

Zhiquan Ding, aged 37, joined CCCC-FHDI Engineering Co in 2009 and is working as the structural director and project manager, providing consulting services for Chinese and international clients. He is especially proficient in the use of FIDIC contracts and international project design management.

Tony Igboamalu is a professional chemical engineer (water and wastewater infrastructure engineering director) in Osmotic Engineering Group, where he is currently involved in providing sustainable water supply, sanitation, environmentally strategic solutions initiatives, infrastructure development and investment in Africa.

Wei Li, Chief Engineer, Renewable Energy Engineering Institute, PowerChina Huadong Engineering Corporation Limited. Li Wei has presided over two projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, won 20 authorised patents and published a total of more than 30 papers. He is the main drafter of the national standard, Standard for Design of Offshore Wind Farm, and the industry standard, Code for Basic Design of Wind Turbines for Offshore Wind Farm Projects and has been granted 13 science and technology awards at provincial and ministerial level.
