El comienzo de la temporada en Ibiza ha sido de todo menos tranquilo… Aunque esperado por todos, se puede decir que volver a jugar en la alta competición después del parón, pues te puede pillar bajo de forma o simplemente que hayas olvidado como era el jugar en competición de primer nivel. Sea como sea, lo que sí es verdad es que la temporada aquí empezó de “0 a 100”. Todos hemos tenido la sensación de que la maquinaria estaba funcionando en abril como si fuera agosto.

Ahora que hemos llegado a la mitad de la temporada, tengo que reconocer que para mi experiencia, se me ha pasado muy rápido. Sería que tenía ganas de este follón que es vivir una temporada desde dentro. Para nuestro número de julio-agosto, por primera vez tenemos en portada a un club de la isla. Hemos visto muchos artistas, incluso alguna fiesta, pero nunca un club que toma el protagonismo de nuestra portada y contraportada. Amnesia es una de las grandes instituciones de la noche en todo el mundo. Historia viva del mundo clubbing. Para nosotros es un orgullo que un club de la importancia de Amnesia ocupe nuestra cover. Además de Amnesia recibimos este “mes” algunos de los artistas que están siendo protagonistas en la isla de Ibiza y fuera de ella. Como siempre dando espacio para artistas internacionales de primer nivel y artistas que se abren camino en la actual escena. Una escena que si algo nos está demostrando, es que está más abierta que nunca para nuevos artistas que llegan, y que en muy poco tiempo son capaces de llegar a posiciones que antes otros tardaban mucho más tiempo. Ya se sabe, ahora todo va tan rápido que en un abrir y cerrar de ojos pasan cosas que se convierten en virales, y si has estado desconectado un día o un par de horas, pues te quedas fuera de juego. Esto no pasa solo con videos virales, pasa con artistas que están llegando a nuestra escena.

Solo nos queda desear que disfrutéis de este número, y nos vemos muy muy pronto, volvemos en septiembre con nuestra última edición de la temporada 2022 y que desde este mismo momento ya estamos preparando.

TEO MOLINA - CEO FIESTA&BU

HOW WERE YOU FIRST INTRODUCED TO MODULAR SYNTHESIS AND WHY WERE YOU DRAWN TO IT? I was first introduced to modular synthesis when I went looking for an alternative to my plugins. I had been working with computers for a long time but never managed to get the sound that I liked. I really liked the modular format because it allows me to build my sounds from scratch, like lego pieces.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STUDIO? My studio is built around my modular system. All pieces in my studio are there to capture the best sound from my modular equipment. I spent a lot of time looking for the best pieces and set it up in such a way that I don’t have to look at my screen all the time. When I am recording, I am just focusing on the modular and nothing else.

WHERE IS IT LOCATED? WHAT CITY? HOW MANY HOURS CAN YOU SPEND HERE? My studio is located in my hometown, Utrecht, in the Netherlands. I kind of work in bursts, so sometimes I am there every day of the week but there are also times where I don’t go at all. Which is fine, I don’t like forcing it when I am having an off day.

O C LIN BENDERS WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT MACHINE OVER THERE? The most important machine in the studio is probably the coffee machine. After that I’d say the modular system is definitely the main piece in my room. It took me years to piece it together and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT EURORACK IS? Eurorack is a specific modular format with a lot of independent developers. It allows you to completely design your own system and have it do exactly what you want it to do. Best comparison would be lego blocks, the sky is the limit. If you want a synth with 3 filters and 8 oscillators, you can build it. Or a drum machine that never plays a 4 to the floor beat. Anything is possible.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE MANUFACTURERS OF EURORACK MODULES?

This question is becoming increasingly hard to answer, as each year we see tons of new manufacturers entering the scene. That said, I still have an all-time favourite in my system which are my Macbeth modules. I still get excited when I see these for sale, even though they are becoming very hard to find.

I don’t really edit tracks at all if I can. If I don’t like the take, I usually just hit record again and play the whole passage one more time. That said, there’s always something that could do with some micro edits. For that I work with protools and I try to get it done with a minimum number of edits if I can get away with it.

YOU SAID YOU DON’T REALLY PLAY THE SAME THING TWICE. IMPROVISATION ALWAYS? True. It depends on what mood I am in. But given the nature of modular synths, once I take down a patch the song is gone. So when I am in a jamming mood, I just record everything and keep the best parts. If I am really working on a song or a remix or something, I leave the same patch on the wall for days until I am happy with the result. For live shows, it is always improvised from start to finish.

HOW IS YOUR TECHNICAL RIDER FOR A SHOW IN A CLUB OR FESTIVAL? YOU CAN DESCRIBE IT. My rider is pretty straightforward. The most important part is that I have an hr to set things up and that the power stays on until after my set. Other than that I’m pretty easy.

WHAT DO YOU TAKE WITH YOU TO THE GIGS? INDISPENSABLE FOR YOU AND YOUR LIVE? Not that much actually. I usually fly on my own, with the modular setup packed up in 3 big pelicases. I always bring a book with me, which I never read for some reason.

IN A CLUB OR FESTIVAL, TO DO YOUR LIVE. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT? The most important part is that I arrive in time and that I have the time I need to do a proper setup. Luckily most of the places I have played have all been very accommodating so I haven’t had a lot of problems with this so far.

YOU WILL HAVE ENCOUNTERED DIFFERENT PROBLEMS. ANY ONE TO FORGET?

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 1 HOUR, 4 HOUR AND 12 HOUR SET?

I once had a situation where the airliner lost half of my suitcases. I was on my way to a show in Madrid and the airline company bumped me off of the flight because the plane was full. So I arrived way late in Madrid, less than an hr before I had to go on stage. When I went to collect my bags, I found out they had lost one of my modular cases. Since there was no time left to figure something out, I had to do the entire modular show on half my system. It ended up being a very neurotic acid set, which was fun.. but I was quite worried until the airport found my missing case a few days later.

The biggest difference between a 1 hr set and a longer set is tension span. With a 1 hr set, I usually go for a more compact flow to keep the energy high. With longer sets, I have more time to build up momentum and get a mood going. The really long sets are always a leap of faith. There’s no preparing that, just gotta go with the flow and keep it going until the lights go on. There’s always the risk of running out of ideas, which only gets worse if you worry about it too much. So just having fun in the moment is always the best approach.

AND WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEXT PROJECTS? I’m currently working on a project with a friend of mine, Boris Acket. He’s awesome with lights and installations, so we are experimenting a bunch with different materials and moods. I’m not quite sure how it will end up yet but we’re having a ton of fun with it.

BEFORE STARTING THIS INTERVIEW, WE WANT TO ASK YOU, HOW ARE YOU? HOW HAS THE SUMMER STARTED? My summer started great, we went to Paris as a family where we celebrated the seventh birthday of my daughter Lisa. Visited Disneyland, spent a lot of money, stood in line for hours at attractions. But in general, it was fun and once again we were convinced how happy we are to live in Europe in Spain.

spartaque THE WINTER HAS BEEN COMPLICATED, SEEING YOUR COUNTRY IN VERY DIFFICULT TIMES. HOW HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED ALL THIS? These emotions are difficult to describe, it was a nightmare in which we lived... We could neither sleep nor eat. We constantly blamed ourselves for the fact that we go to sleep in a warm bed while our family, our friends, loved ones at that moment are hiding from rockets and bombs in basements and shelters. This is a terrible feeling to which we are already accustomed after 3.5 months of the war. And although the news feed in Europe is no longer so replete with events from Ukraine, nothing has ended. Russia continues to attack our cities, continues to kill Ukrainians, this is a terrible tragedy that should not happen in Europe in the 21st century and unfortunatelly can be stopped only with weapon in hands. As dilomacy does not work with Russians.

WHEN DID YOU LEAVE YOUR UKRAINE? HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU BEEN IN BARCELONA? HOW WAS THE CHANGE? I have been living in Barcelona for 4.5 years, it was a little difficult to get used to it because the way of life here is different from the way of life in Ukraine, here people live differently. In Spain, there is a certain mentality that you had to get used to, but as soon as you immerse yourself in this rhythm of life, you learn the language, you begin to understand more about local customs, ways of life, people, then you get used to it and later you start to like it madly. I am very glad that we are here.

WHAT DOES BARCELONA GIVE YOU EVERY DAY? That’s a great question, and when I moved here I thought I’d have a lot more networking in general. And indeed a lot of people from the industry live here, there are a lot of cool parties events rooftops, but still I spend my weekdays working in the office, I actively develop my company IAMT Music and therefore, in general, I communicate with people from my working circle. On weekends I fly away and flight connection is perfect here. Also Barcelona gives me a great climate, a very cool environment, and of course the sea is something I don’t want to live without anymore.

MANY ARTISTS, DJS WHO HAVE STAYED IN UKRAINE, DESPITE THE DIFFICULTY, HOW HAS IT BEEN FOR THEM TO CONTINUE WITH MUSIC? WHAT DO YOU KNOW?

Of course, I’m in contact with many artists friends their live also was devided before and after February 24th. It is much easier for girls artists now, because they can safely travel outside the country, but for guys it is much more difficult. I know that there permit issued allowing male artists to leave the country for a short period of time to perform the shows. But then they must return, because now the country is under martial law.

Some of my friends have already taken advantage of this opportunity, this is a pretty new posibility, as far as I understand, not everyone knows it. You need a special permit from the Ministry of Culture to be able to make it. Some of the guys that I talk to continue to produce music, many have moved to the safer western regions of the country. But then again, Russian missiles fly there too. I have no idea how they manage to keep making music under such stress, I really admire them.

THE MUSIC HASN’T STOPPED WITH YOUR TRACK CALLED ZYMA ON CODEX. IT WAS MADE WITH UKRAINIAN FOLK SINGER JULY VITRANIUK, HOW WAS THE CREATION AND LAUNCH? When the war started, I realized that I really want to write a track with Ukrainian folk vocals. I thought it would be great to find someone who performs this kind of music, but I didn’t know anyone in this genre at all. I saw Yulia’s song by accident while scrolling through Instagram. She performed this acappella and I recorded this vocal vocal directly on the phone screen, it was the screen recording that I inserted into the project. Having created a track from scratch, I sent Yulia to listen to it and was very happy when she agreed to release it on the Codex. Here is such a story, sometimes creative ways lead to a result in a completely non-standard way.

YOU HAVE A VERY GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH NATIONAL ARTISTS LIKE RAMIRO LOPEZ. HOW IS IT TO WORK WITH HIM? Yes, Spain has become my second home, this is a country that I love very much and of course I am familiar with a large number of local artists Ramiro is one of them, and by the way he was the first great Spanish artist that I met and I am very proud that we keep warm friendly relations.

During the quarantine, Ramiro invited me to take a part in his video project Chief Lopez, that was a lovely trip, we became friends with his family and team and decided to create several joint projects, one of which became the Union Three label. We also have a cool joint business project Swinger PR with his brother Antonio, they have a wonderful family that I love very much, working with the guys is always a pleasure, as we are really on the same vibe.

WHAT OTHER ARTISTS DO YOU FEEL GOOD WORKING WITH? I am connected with many artists not only by musical projects, but also by my company IAMT Music, which is engaged in the label management - we manage the labels of such artists like Metody Hristov, Fatima Hadji, Xeniamany more, also working on our Intense youtube channel we are in touch with many brilliant artists such as Miss Monique, Koroleva, ASYS, T78, Joyhauser and many many more.

WHICH ARTIST WOULD YOU LIKE TO WORK WITH IN THE FUTURE? There are so many of them, and this list can be endless. I think right now is the best moment for collaborations because you can share the fans, engagement. Actually Union Three is a label for collaboration projects!

HOW DO YOU THINK THE FUTURE OF UKRAINE WILL BE? It is difficult for me to make predictions for the future, because I see that the situation is changing very fast, we have been on some kind of mental rollercoaster for four months, up and down, the situation seems to improve, then it gets worse again, then it seems to improve again and there is better hope, then it again gets worse. What will happen to Ukraine, it’s future now directly depends on the leading democracies of the world and the support of the Western countries, we cannot stand without them. In my mind, I see Ukraine as an important prosperous and democratic member of the Western world, and it is for Western values that my compatriots are now dying, for being a democratic country that Russia does not allow us to be. I believe that we will stand tall, I believe in Ukraine and I will support it in every possible way.

AND THE FUTURE OF SPARTAQUE? WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE COMING MONTHS? Oh! I have a lot of plans of

course - I plan to visit North and South America with performances this summer, there will be a lot of gigs in Europe. Of course many releases are planned.

Our company is developing, right now we are looking for a new office in Barcelona that could accommodate more people and we have a lot of plans for the future for the development of the company, we plan to attract more big artists to our projects, organise events, just confirmed a party in Input club with which we are constantly cooperating. I think a lot of interesting cases are waiting for us, so the summer promises to be very busy.

jamie jones “ Jamie Jones, es un placer charlar contigo. Después de dos años sin Paradise Ibiza nos imaginamos que tienes muchas ganas de volver a retomar la isla. Sí, al principio era agradable tener un descanso, tener el verano para uno mismo, pero, el problema es que no podías ir a ningún sitio, ni hacer nada para pasarlo bien, y aunque fue agradable estar en casa, estoy entusiasmado de estar de vuelta pinchando en Ibiza cada semana y de recibir la energía de la gente. ¿Qué supone trasladaros de DC10 a Amnesia? Suponemos que es un paso adelante en la trayectoria de la fiesta. Lo pasé fantásticamente haciendo Paradise en DC10 pero como todo, sentí que llegaba un nuevo capítulo en la historia de Paradise y en mi historia en Ibiza. Siento que Amnesia es el lugar perfecto para la próxima parte en nuestro camino, y sabes, más que nada necesito un nuevo desafío. Paradise en DC10 ha alcanzado en mi opinión el potencial completo, y es que en mi vida siempre intento conseguirlo. Ahora el trabajo consiste en conseguir esto mismo en Amnesia. ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de Amnesia y cuáles son tus mejores recuerdos pinchando en este mítico club? Tengo unos recuerdos fantásticos de Amnesia, tanto de DJ como bailando. Cada vez que pinché para Music On en Amnesia siempre tuve un tiempo fantástico, siempre pensé que la sala tenía la forma perfecta y me encantan las terrazas de arriba, la gente alrededor en niveles diferentes y obviamente cuando sale el sol es mágico, no hay lugar como este, así que estoy súper contento de tener la oportunidad de hacerlo y poder traer mi música a la gente cada semana.

Sentí que llegaba un nuevo capítulo en la historia de PARADISE y en mi historia en IBIZA. Los nombres de los artistas que van a acompañarte en esta aventura son todos de primera línea. ¿Nos podías hablar de los menos conocidos, de aquellos a los que debemos prestar atención? Imagino que los nombres que es posible que no hayas oído hablar cómo Cinthie que es un DJ productor de Berlín, EME que es de África pero ha vivido en New York y Berlín durante muchos años, tiene definitivamente su propio estilo, y pienso que revolucionará el club, para ser honesto, hay tantos nombres en esta categoría como Say Rita, Witts, Mandemore, Julia Niko, James Solace todos ellos grandes artistas que no puedo esperar a tenerlos en el club. Hay muchos más nombres, una de las cosas que siempre he intentado y de lo que me enorgullezco, es de tratar de empujar a nuevos talentos, y en Paradise Ibiza hay muchos nuevos y seminuevos nombres para descubrir.

Paradise es una fiesta con una atmósfera especial, ¿cuál es el secreto de su éxito? Creo que pusimos el focus en la decoración de la fiesta y la música. En cómo la música fluye, tu sabes, hemos elegido los artistas y DJs por el hecho de que van a revolucionar el club y la energía que tenemos como familia, toda la gente que está detrás del escenario, creo que todos somos gente vibe. Todos hemos estado bailando en Ibiza y alrededor del mundo por muchos años antes de que comenzaramos a hacer Paradise, y continuamos bailando y yendo a los clubs. Somos gente fiestera, así que sabemos en que vibe y en que energía queremos estar, intentamos traer esto a la fiesta que hemos creado y creo que la gente siente que hay una familia de clubbers experimentados detrás del evento (risas) y quizás es por eso que, tu sabes, la gente viene y siente que amamos estar allí tanto como ellos.

¿Qué me gusta más acerca de Ibiza? Me gusta el hecho de que tiene tanto que ofrecer, hay todavía sitios en los que no he estado y llevo viniendo más de 20 años.

Llevas muchos años en Ibiza, por lo que ya te podemos considerar un ibicenco más. ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de la isla? ¿Qué me gusta más acerca de Ibiza? Me gusta el hecho de que tiene tanto que ofrecer, hay todavía sitios en los que no he estado y llevo viniendo más de 20 años. Aún hay rincones y cosas para explorar donde siento que hay una innegable magia que llena a la gente de positividad, por eso es que tienes toda clase de gente viniendo aquí, tanto hippies como gente que solo quieren explorar su creatividad, gente que viene a romper y pasarlo bien bailando yendo de fiesta durante 3 días o una semana o 3 meses... De cualquier manera pienso que es uno de los pocos lugares que tiene todo para ofrecer a cada tipo de persona en un espacio realmente tan pequeño, así que nada esta lejos y pienso que la historia y tipo de gente que siempre ha venido aquí, artística, a veces creativa, gente extraña, ha embebido en la tierra y ha embebido en la cultura aquí. Para todos los que trabajamos aquí no nos sorprende lo que ocurre, pero no deja de ser increíble que una pequeña isla en medio del mar sea el epicentro de la música electrónica año tras año.

¿Existe alguna explicación racional o es simplemente algo mágico? Bien, yo realmente llegué a la isla al final del siglo pasado (risas) yeah, hace mucho tiempo... En definitiva vine de vacaciones al final de los años 90, así que creo que podrías decir que llegué justo al final del siglo 20.

Llegaste a Ibiza a principios del siglo XXI, ¿qué cosas de aquellos maravillosos años has incorporado a Paradise? En los años 90, recuerdo ir a fiestas como Manumission e incluso a Space en la tarde del domingo o cualquier mañana en el after club. Definitivamente pensé que había un sentido de hedonismo que era perfecto, gente dejándose ir y dejando sus personalidades y siendo espíritus libres. Pienso que eso es lo que tratamos de sacar adelante, es lo que tratamos de hacer más presente esta temporada en

Ibiza con Paradise, esa sensación de salvajismo y pienso que con toda la producción y las ideas que traemos al evento este verano, definitivamente podrás apreciar lo que queremos decir cuando experimentes Paradise en Amnesia. Dinos algún artista actual o de la historia electrónica por el que “matarías” por hacer un back to back. Creo que a día de hoy mi DJ favorito es Laurent Garnier. Me inspiré en él cuando lo escuché la primera vez en la terraza de Space (puff) quizás en 2001

o 2002 y aún quiero escucharle. Ahora a veces lo escucho, aun me inspira, así que puede ser increíble experimentar eso y desafiarme a mí mismo a pinchar con un artista de su nivel. Su sentido de creatividad, su sentido de profundidad y también el ánimo con el que pincha, siento que es algo que comparto con él, ese sentido de melancolía, cambios de humor... Pero como a mi, le gustan los bajos y le gustan las emociones y los bajos (risas). Para Jamie Jones Ibiza es: Una casa mágica.

¿Qué tal fue la experiencia The Menu? Fue genial, me gusta mucho hacer estas cosas, unirme a este tipo de iniciativas, siempre compartir tiempo con amigos y con gente del sector siempre es positivo. Y como buen italiano, además de gustarme la música me gusta la comida. Decidiste crear pasta con salchichas y setas. ¿A qué te recuerda este plato? A mi casa, es un plato que me hacía mi mamá desde pequeño y siempre que voy a verla se lo pido. Hablando de comida, ¿cuál es tu plato favorito cuando estás de gira o el que resulta más cómodo para tomar en hoteles? Me encanta el pescado, el shusi, normalmente no como carne antes de pinchar porque no quiero sentirme pesado en la actuación.

¿Tu postre favorito? Coulant de chocolate. ¿Qué bebida acompaña a tu comida perfecta? Un buen vino tinto. ¿Un país (que no sea Italia) que te haya sorprendido gastronómicamente? Me encanta la comida peruana, y también me gustó mucho la gastronomía que probé cuando fui a Bali. ¿Un país desastre en lo que a gastronomía se refiere? Me van a matar... Alemania. ¿Tu restaurante favorito de Barcelona? Spaccanapoli, es un restaurante típico de cocina napolitana.

¿Un alimento que odies? El bacalao. ¿Un alimento/ comida que no te puedes resistir? La pasta. ¿Es posible para un DJ con tanto viaje tener una buena alimentación? Es muy difícil... Es posible, pero cuesta mucho esfuerzo.

FIRST TIME IN IBIZA? 2005 as a teenager! I went to DC10 to catch my debut song ‘Love Dose’ being played live and heard it multiple times during the same Circoloco night... Back then I thought this was kind of normal but I soon realised that you only come up with those crossover records once in a while. Maybe ’Tataki’ is comparable and that took many years to come again.

LAST TIME IN IBIZA?

A REFERENT DJ FOR YOU FROM IBIZA?

We live between London and Ibiza so I am on the island a lot. I also spent the entire lockdown on the island, producing my 2021 album ‘The Interior Journey’, maybe my most complete album project so far and I owe that to this special place.

I think it will always be Alfredo. I have also dedicated two songs to him, one is actually called ‘Alfredo’ and the other ‘Ab Aeterno’.

LAST CLUB WHERE YOU PLAYED?

Every season has its magic to be honest. Maybe because I was younger but the 2014-era of Destino open air parties had something unique...Also everybody loves vintage DC10 and even the very early Ushuaia days. Everything becomes better with time in our minds I guess. These will be the good ol’ days too!

I played at Amnesia for Renaissance in June, alongside many cool artists and friends. Amnesia is an institution and still offers something that none of the newer clubs can create overnight.

AN IBIZA BRAND PARTY? WHY? Right now, it has to be Afterlife. Not just because of my latest release ’Tataki’ on the label, I just think it’s the most exciting and innovative event experience on the island at the moment, and maybe worldwide too. It’s a peek into the future for sure. YOUR SECRET PLACE IN IBIZA? We have a fish hut in Cala D’hort. It’s my sanctuary and place to find peace, invite friends and cook whatever I fish that day from the sea with my boat. I love spearfishing, it’s perhaps my only hobby. My other secret place was a shop called Adam+Eve, if you were lucky enough you might have experienced it. Sadly for the island, it recently closed.

THE WORST OF IBIZA?

My ‘every day’ place to go is the Cas Costa grill on the way to San Josep. Simple, unpretentious and always the same! Also maybe the best grilled chicken on the entire island.

Any beach at 7am in winter, after coming out of the freezing waters with the catch of the day, heading for a coffee and a sandwich at any local workers’ hangout. I was born in a touristic island in Greece, so I am not a fan of the packed summer beaches. I much prefer off-season swimming. In August I am always searching for the nearest air condition!

The bureaucracy! From the most simple license to a house permit, you end up regretting it halfway through.

THE BEST OF IBIZA? It’s a giant music hub in summer! You can stay in Ibiza all season and literately meet every talent or industry person from our music scene. Also driving to the south of the island during winter months with windows down, breathing the fresh air and looking at the beautifully abandoned island taking a rest is an incredible feeling.

Dentro de la amplia industria clubbing de Ibiza existe un sector que suele pasar desapercibido pero que es crucial para su funcionamiento. Hablamos del servicio de “transfers, que consiste en mover a los artistas por la isla de modo seguro y efectivo. Como todo en Ibiza este sector tiene sus particularidades, aquí no hablamos de choferes, aquí se usa una terminología mucho más cool: Drivers. Una de las empresas que destacan en este trabajo es Ibizology, creada y dirigida por Miguel Angel Sánchez Figueras, charlamos con él sobre su historia y sobre la dinámica de este servicio.

¿Cuándo llegaste a la isla y cuál fue tu trayectoria laboral antes de crear Ibizology?

¿En aquellos años existían servicios de transfers para los artistas que llegaban a Ibiza?

Llegamos desde Sevilla mi madre y mis hermanos en el verano de 1979. Un domingo estaba en misa con mis abuelos, y tres días después estábamos todos desnudos en Aguas Blancas (Ibiza) rodeados de hippies... ¡Un shock! Mi madre vendía en los mercadillos por aquella época y el choque cultural para mí fue espectacular. Me fui en el 91 y volví de nuevo en 1996. Estuve unos años entre Pacha, El Divino y Space, haciendo desde recoge vasos, camarero, pegapóster, relaciones públicas, portero... Digamos que tengo un máster en la noche de la isla. Ya en el 2012 empecé en Ushuaïa con mi hermano David a ayudarlo un poco con las RRPP, la publicidad y la preventa.

La primera vez que me enviaron a por uno fue en El Divino, en el 98. Me dijeron: “vete a alquilar un coche automático y te vas al aeropuerto a recoger a tal”, hoy eso es impensable. Desde las agencias de management se ha estandarizado una forma de actuar con los artistas que exige al promotor contar con unos medios que antes no se contemplaban. Cada club lo atiende a su manera, los hay que van con lo justo y después hay gente como Yann Pissenem en Ushuaïa y Hï, que busca la excelencia en todos los aspectos, y eso es algo que los artistas agradecen. Hay que entender que son personas que pasan fuera de casa más de la mitad del año, de una ciudad a otra, y que es importante recibirlos y tratarlos como se merecen.

La plantilla oscila entre 12 y 18 personas entre drivers, personal de tráfico y administración, y a expensas de que Mercedes termine con sus problemas de plazos de entrega de vehículos a día de hoy contamos con 6 Mercedes V Class y 2 Minibuses.

Recuerdo estar en Pacha bailando música disco una semana, y a la siguiente entrar y encontrarme con una sesión de Acid House... Así, “sin anestesia”. A principios de los 90 los clubes ingleses se dieron cuenta de que en verano podían continuar su negocio en la isla y se acabaron las fiestas de “Sanfermines, Pelos Locos, Erótica” y demás producciones propias de los clubes, sólo sobrevivió Flower Power y llegaron Ministry of Sound, Home, Cream... Pero fue más una hibridación entre lo que éramos y lo que venía de fuera, que una simple substitución cultural. Creo que esa es la clave del éxito de Ibiza. Por otro lado he visto cómo la gente venía al principio a disfrutar los clubes, después a las fiestas y ahora al artista. Vienen ya “a tiro hecho”.

¿Cuándo y cómo se te ocurrió la idea de crear Ibizology?

¿Algún artista que te gustaría mencionar con el que es un placer trabajar?

Al poco tiempo de empezar a trabajar en Ushuaïa me vi en la tesitura de que pedía servicios de transfer a empresas de la isla y que en cuanto había un cambio de última hora no podían atenderlo, con lo que eso conlleva a efectos de incumplimiento de contrato con un artista a quien hay que proveerlo de su transporte. Mi decisión de crear Ibizology no fue oportunista, únicamente buscaba solucionar un problema, que el club para el que trabajara estuviese a salvo de esas situaciones, y que tuviese un apoyo externo en cuanto a las necesidades de estos durante el tiempo que estuviesen en la isla.

“Buff”... Muchos, son muchos años. Pero con los chicos de Swedish House Mafia, Ax, Seb y Steve la relación trascendió lo profesional a lo personal, en especial con Axwell. A día de hoy hay artistas como Nic Fanciulli, Paul Kalkbrenner o Yassine (Loco Dice) a los que pagaría por llevar o traer con tal de pasar un rato con ellos. Pero por encima de todos, la persona que mejor me ha tratado a mi equipo y a mí, y a la que admiro como persona además de como artista, es a Andrea Oliva.

¿Es verdad que existe una relación especial entre los artistas y sus drivers?

Hablando de una forma general, ¿cómo suele ser el comportamiento de los artistas durante los transfers?

¿Cómo ves el futuro de Ibiza?

A ver... Ni todos los artistas son accesibles, ni todos los drivers son empáticos, pero sí, en algunos casos, como en cualquier otro ámbito, se establecen relaciones personales muy gratificantes.

¡Excepcional! Ya no son esos “enfant terrible” de hace años. Son gente muy profesional, y con un equipo detrás que les ayuda a serlo. Están en el 99% de las ocasiones en modo trabajo y entienden que tú también.

Has vivido la transformación de Ibiza en primera persona, ¿nos puedes contar desde tu punto de vista cómo ha sido ese cambio?

¿Para qué clubs trabajáis actualmente? Como clubes únicamente para Ushuaïa y Hi, para mí son más que dos simples clientes, los he visto nacer y crecer, y mi empresa lo ha hecho a su sombra y de su mano, y no contemplaría nunca hacerlo para otro club. Sí, trabajo con artistas que vienen a la isla y me llaman personalmente o a través de su management. ¿Cuántos trabajadores forman Ibizology y cual es vuestra flota de vehículos?

Lo veo buscando su equilibrio, y espero que ahí nos encontremos todos.

Born in Heringen, a small town in Germany, Johannes Goller tells that he had a great childhood while recalling some important turning points during his 20 years as Cocoon’s manager. We sat down with the promoter and entrepreneur in his new home in Ibiza to talk about his roots, his two decades at the helm of one of the island’s most successful parties and his new business projects.

"Definitely you need to have a strong character to be able to be in this industry" After sharing a friendly greeting, we decided to move our meeting at the backyard of Johannes’s new house in the centre of the island of Ibiza. We started chatting about his German roots, his early inclusion in electronic music and his current base of operations, Ibiza, where he has lived permanently for nine years. To describe Johannes Goller, we could start by pointing out that he was on the verge of taking over the family business but one call changed the course of his life and he ended up running the legendary Cocoon parties for over twenty years. Since 2019 he has also has worked with the Swiss artist and businessman Dieter Meier in a wine project in the north of the island “OJO de Ibiza” and its pop ups events “Cuts & Wine” are diversifying the gastronomic and wine scene in the island. While he recalls some important turning points, Johannes also shares that he never made a conscious decision about working in the music industry, it simply happened naturally.

Once he finished his school degree he became a butcher and made his master degree and one year later at the age of 24 he made the decision not to continue in the family business and to become a teacher of young students of butchery. But before taking that step he wanted to make his dream come true. He went for a summer to Ibiza, to work and enjoy the island. He was familiar with it since 1988 because his parents brought him for the first time when he was 13 years old. “I swore to myself that one day I would come back.” After his first year in Ibiza he returned to Frankfurt and a phone call from Sven asking him to be part of the Cocoon team “Sven planned to take charge of Mondays at Amnesia, the moment was perfect” changed everything. Johannes accepted immediately without knowing what his position was going to be. He went from making posters, picking-up Dj’s, searching for secluded beaches to do the parties afterwards, to taking control of the lineup, production, marketing and the promotion so that everything would work perfectly every Monday.

“That is also the reason why Sven said, hey, if I don’t change anything, I won’t be able to DJ here anymore in the future. The music was very commercial at that time. That’s how the idea to start Cocoon came about.” The first three years the party was only in the main room of Amnesia and the terrace was more a place of reunion than a thing. This started to change and in the year 2004 there was a turning point where people started to understand the musical style. The island was all about trance and house, there was no techno scene at the time. Dj’s were hired from time to time but never before had a promoter tried to establish a techno concept for a whole season. The mix of Sven Väth playing solid techno and Ricardo Villalobos with his hypnotic deep house was a hit. Suddenly, the Dj’s on the island who were playing for Manu Mission or Circoloco you could find them on the dancefloor.

Born in Heringen, 1975, in a small town in Germany in the district of Hessen, about 180km north of Frankfurt, Johannes tells us that he had a wonderful childhood. “I’m an only child and my parents are deaf. I learned sign language at a very early age. We also had a butcher shop for four generations. I was always around a lot of people and I had a very fun and sheltered childhood in the countryside.” “My dream was always to become a butcher. I mean, of course I wanted to become a professional football player, but that didn’t work (He laughs). For me it was like a game. My grandfather taught me everything from the beginning. It was never a question what to do with my life. I wanted to be like my grandfather, my greatgrandfather and like my father.”

Cocoon was a very German party from 2000 to 2003 and the only techno night in Ibiza with Dj’s like Jeff Mills, Carl Cox, Ritchie Hawtin and of course Sven Väth. This music was new for the island because there wasn’t any techno in those years.

“They smelled that something was happening, something was going to change. I think 2004 was the year that Cocoon really took off to success.”

His first contact with electronic music and with Sven Väth came through the radio. “There was a channel called HR Three and every Saturday there was a session from nine to twelve. Club night was called, and once a month Sven Vath, Mark Spoon and Dj Dag, among others, used to play. Thanks to these DJ’s my friends and I got into electronic music. Then we said, where are those DJs? We follow them and that’s how we found the clubs. I was 14 years old at that time and this was my access to the nightlife”.

“I remember the first after party in July 1999 in Cala Jondal. We had Sven and Mark Spoon playing. We were maybe 50 friends. Afterwards we went to S’estanyol. We started with 200 people and at the last after party we were like 5000. The whole beach was full. The police came with a boat and said, this is crazy but please don’t stop the music because if all these people want to leave at the same time it will be a problem. So please go on and let the people go slowly. It was amazing!.”

Most of Johannes’s friends live in Berlin and he is happy to go and see them but he feels happier when he goes back home. “Berlin is so vibrant, every week there are new clubs or new places opened. When the wall came down, techno was the soundtrack of the time and with Love Parade, a million and a half people (that was crazyhe laughs). Berlin was the capital of electronic music and I think it is now. If you didn’t want to go to the army, you moved to Berlin because people there didn’t have to go to the army. Those who were against the system used to go to there to settle down. It’s not so cheap anymore but still cheaper than London or Barcelona. It’s a fun city although I have a very ambivalent feeling towards it because I don’t like big cities.” Johannes feels so fortunate that has always been able to combine work and pleasure and he never had the feeling of going to work. “It has been a gift to be able to work with friends, with likeminded people with big visions, on fun projects. It’s something I’ve always appreciated a lot.” In 2020 Sven felt it was time to stop. He decided to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Cocoon and have a great season but the decision was made and Cocoon would not return to Ibiza. With the clubs open again, his friend Luciano called him asking if he could help him to produce his night in Ibiza. “Luciano is going to organize his own night at Club Chinois (old Heart) every Saturday in July and August. It has new owners and the reform is going to be technically at the highest level. I am also going to help him build a solid structure in his team because we want to continue working in the future”.

"MY FAVOURITE MOMENT AT AMNESIA I THINK WAS THE CLOSING PARTY OF 2006. THE GOVERNMENT CHANGED THE LAW FOR ALL THE CLUBS BECAUSE SCHOOL STARTED AGAIN. SO THE CLUBS HAD TO CLOSE AT 6:00. AMNESIA CALLED US TWO DAYS BEFORE AND TOLD US THE BAD NEWS. WE HAD TO CLOSE AT 6:00. WE TALKED TO OUR LAWYERS AND THEY TOLD US THAT WE COULD RE-OPEN FROM 8:00AM TILL 6:00 THE NEXT DAY. WE ONLY HAD TO ENSURE THAT EVERYBODY CAME OUT OF THE CLUB AND CAME BACK TWO HOURS LATER. WE TALKED TO THE OWNERS OF AMNESIA AND WITH THE RADIO STATION ABOUT PLAYING FROM 06:00

Since 2019 Johannes has also been working with Swiss artist and entrepreneur Dieter Meier on a wine project in the north of the island. Dieter has a vineyard here and has been producing wine since 2010. “He asked me if I could help him distribute the wine he produces in Ibiza. We had our first lunch together and I told him a bit of my story, that I am a butcher and that I was working for Sven, and he said, very interesting. So, do you know Argentinian wines?. We also produce wine in Argentina. Why don’t you also distribute our Argentinian wines in Ibiza? And I said, well, I would love to do it, but I don’t have much time because I’m working for Cocoon. I started without knowing that it would be the last year of Cocoon. I had a summer where I did both, but wine was just a side project. And then, all of a sudden, the pandemic came and all the clubs were closed”. He had the know-how to make barbecues, exclusive wines of Ibiza and Argentina and a great friendship with top level Dj’s. “I only had to think of a good name. Suddenly I had a business plan called ‘Cuts and Wines’. This is how everything started.” The concept has grown during the last two years and this season Cuts and Wines will also be in Underground. “Underground would be every Wednesday at night.

TO 8:00 A SVEN AND RITCHIE SESSION THAT WAS RECORDED, WE HAD FREE WATER AND FRUIT FOR EVERYONE WHO WAITED OUTSIDE AT THE PARKING OF AMNESIA. AT 6:00 WHEN WE HAD TO CLOSE THERE WAS AROUND 6000 PEOPLE IN AMNESIA, THE CAR PARK BECAME A PARTY. ALL THE CARS HAD THE RADIO ON AND EVERYONE WAS DANCING AND HAVING A GOOG TIME. AT 07:55 WE STARTED TO OPEN THE DOOR AGAIN AND AT 08:10 WE HAD 6000 PEOPLE IN AMNESIA. SVEN PLAYED IN THE MAIN ROOM AND LUCIANO RICARDO AND RITCHIE HAD THEIR FIRST BACK TO BACK ON THE AMNESIA TERRACE. THAT WAS A MOMENT I WILL NEVER FORGET IN MY LIFE"

Johannes has always had the idea of having his own restaurant but thinks that in Ibiza there are already too many at the moment. “You have to find the right location. I have the concept ready and I got the people to invest but you have to be sure because if you dedicate yourself to the restaurant business in Ibiza, at least during six months you can’t do anything else. Then, I don’t know how much I really want it”. He discovered India and the energy of the Himalayan Mountains, Nepal, Bhutan and its spirituality very early. Here he was able to find his personal balance in those crazy years. Thailand is also a place he loves to go with his wife Sarah. Although they could not imagine living anywhere else at the moment, if they had to choose, Johannes and his wife would go far away. “It would definitely be somewhere exotic outside Europe.”

Construir piezas de arte para ser usadas en el desierto de Black Rock City, como son los Googles, usados antiguamente como complemento de seguridad para tener mas visión en situaciones extremas durante las primeras guerras y actualmente para poder cruzar el desierto durante las tormentas y poder disfrutar ese momento con los ojos abiertos.

¿Cuándo elegiste Ibiza y por qué? En el verano del 2008, por el magnetismo de la isla, la energía de las personas así como la naturaleza de la isla y su belleza incomparable… Y por cierto, su escena musical. Son muchos los artistas que son fans de vuestra marca. ¿Qué les ofrecéis para que quieran a Capote? Unos designs limitados y diferentes que apoyan sus estilos y particularidades. ¿Qué hay de Alex en Capote y de Capote en Alex? Alex is Capote and Capote is Alex. Capote es el nombre de la familia y por ende quiero honrar a mis progenitores a través de mi visión íntima y artística. ¿Cómo ves el futuro de Capote? Inspirar a la gente a través del arte y crecer la comunidad. ¿Y el de Ibiza? Hola Mar-T. Te conozco desde hace 20 años y he encontrado a pocas personas que tengan una pasión tan fuerte por la música como tú. ¿Cuándo nació esa pasión?

La música ha sido una parte fundamental durante toda mi vida, en la mayoría de mis mejores recuerdos la música siempre ha estado presente. Y no solo la electrónica, soy un consumidor compulsivo de diferentes géneros desde joven. No concibo pasar un día sin que la música me acompañe de una forma u otra.

Además de DJ digamos que eres el arquitecto de Pyramid, una fiesta que va a contracorriente, que trata de separarse de las modas. Esa actitud rebelde que muestra su programación, ¿nace de ti o es una estrategia diseñada para diferenciarse del resto? La programación de Pyramid se basa en la calidad teniendo en cuenta el tamaño de las dos salas y las costumbres locales en Ibiza. Desgraciadamente en esta isla cuesta mucho programar saliéndose de las típicas vacas sagradas y

éstas parece que nunca dejan de estar de moda y los nuevos artistas salen a cuenta gotas. En Pyramid intentamos abrir brecha para que puedas disfrutar de una programación más acorde con la actualidad de la música electrónica mundial, pero a la vez tenemos programados a Djs que todo el mundo reconoce en Ibiza. También tenemos que agradecer a Ricardo Villalobos su apuesta por la fiesta y por Amnesia, ya que es donde va a pinchar en exclusiva, algo que los demás Djs deberían aprender. Creo que cada fiesta debería de

tener una selección de Djs exclusivos y estamos trabajando en ello. Así era y así debería de ser, sino todas las fiestas parecen clones y Pyramid no será una de ellas.

Cuando creasteis Pyramid, ¿en qué otros conceptos os basasteis? ¿Qué referentes cimentaron los pilares de Pyramid? No existe un solo concepto o referencia en la que se base Pyramid. Sería un error repetir fórmulas por muy exitosas que hayan sido. Pyramid tiene su propio ADN y nos sentimos orgullosos de ello. Está claro que la esencia de Amnesia tiene mucho peso en nuestra fiesta, pero hemos sabido trazar nuestro camino y crear una identidad propia aprendiendo de los éxitos, fracasos y errores de las demás fiestas. Sin duda abran cosas de Pyramid que te recordaran el pasado de las fiestas de Ibiza y no hay nada que ocultar. La experiencia se basa justo en eso... En un carrusel de experiencias. La programación de Pyramid esta temporada es simplemente espectacular. Sé que es complicado elegir algún nombre, ¿pero nos podías decir alguno en especial que te motive personalmente y que no podemos perdérnoslo?

Es muy difícil para mí darte nombres, es un line up muy completo y lleno de grandes artistas. Está claro que hay varios highlights, por ejemplo tuvimos a Four Tet en exclusiva y vamos a tener a Bicep realizando un live que va a ser uno de los momentos del verano. Tenemos clásicos de la isla como Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano, Adam Beyer, Sven Väth, tenemos a toda la armada rumana, los mejores DJs underground británicos, el mejor sonido techno y house de España e Italia, y en mi opinión, a las mujeres más rompedores del momento. Como te decía un cartel muy completo que animo a la gente que le dé un buen repaso, merece la pena.

Hablando de tu faceta de DJ, ¿qué es lo que te motiva cada vez que te subes a la cabina? ¿La emoción, la adrenalina, la música en sí misma? De todo un poco, si no sientes emoción al subirte a una cabina mejor que te dediques a otra cosa. Como te comentaba antes para mi ser DJ es una pasión, no es un trabajo de oficina rutinario, no es una obligación laboral. En el momento en el que ya no sienta ese cosquilleo, esa alegría.., pasaré página y punto. Si no amas lo que haces es absurdo seguir haciéndolo, y yo amo la música por encima de todas las cosas. ¿ Qué canales utilizas para descubrir nueva música, nuevos sonidos y artistas que te inspiran? Yo soy un gran consumidor de Spotify y su inteligencia artificial, además intento ir a todos los festivales que puedo pero solo los que tienen variedad musical, no me gustan los que solo tienen Djs. También tengo los típicos amigos frikis que me van poniendo al día. Además me llegan muchas promos, pero es más difícil encontrar música que me guste. Cambiando de tema ¿Qué es lo que no soportas de la escena actual en Ibiza? No soporto que en muchas ocasiones se pone la música en un segundo plano. Y ese es un mensaje muy perjudicial. La calidad musical y el talento deben ser los protagonistas principales, todo el adorno, la parafernalia, todo lo accesorio debe venir después de lo importante. Y no soporto que algunos de los que tienen que mover esta escena, no tengan cultura musical y además presuman de ello.

¿Qué hace mal la escena y la industria clubbing española para no generar grandes estrellas de la música electrónica pese al talento y la calidad de muchos de sus artistas? El talento es innegable, está ahí. Te podría nombrar por poner una cifra 20 DJs españoles que no tienen nada que envidiar a los grandes nombres que encabezan los mejores festivales del mundo. Nos falta creérnoslo un poco más, más marketing, colaborar más entre nosotros, y dejar a un lado el mayor pecado de este país... La envidia. Eso de no ser un profeta en tu tierra es un dicho que está muy arraigado en la cultura española.

¿Para Mar-T, la música electrónica es? El camino a la unión de culturas de todo el mundo, el pasárselo bien y disfrutar todos juntos. Aunque también tiene su gran espada de Damocles la cual hay que saber gestionar, sino ésta usara la música electrónica como excusa para entrar en tu vida y nunca volverá a ser la misma para lo bueno o lo malo.
