“I am not concerned with Poetry. My subject is War, and the pity of War. The Poetry is in the pity.” Wilfred Owen Not About Heroes is the extraordinary story of two of the Great War poets, Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, their friendship, their inter-dependency, their poetry. Through the letters and poems of these two men, Stephen MacDonald’s acclaimed play paints a vivid and moving picture of their friendship and the conflict that brought them together. One hundred years on from the beginning of the First World War, Not About Heroes is both exhilarating and uncompromising in its exploration of love, war and a friendship that changed the face of British poetry.

THE DrAWEr BOy A beautifully written, funny and bittersweet tale set in Canada. It’s 1972, and an eager-eyed young actor, Miles, arrives on a small farm to do research for a role in a play about country life. He moves in with two middle-aged farmers: stoical Morgan who is not too thrilled with the self-absorbed city boy, and Angus, who lost his short-term memory after being bombed in the war. Miles soon finds himself embroiled in their complex and intricate personal histories as he uncovers a past riddled with secrecy and heartbreak. Warm-hearted, surprising and infinitely moving, The Drawer Boy is a multi-award winning tale that will live long in the memory. Directed by Alasdair McCrone. Designed by Alicia Hendrick. PAGE 23

PHILIP CLOUTs QUArTET The Philip Clouts Quartet play uplifting melodic jazz – the music ranges from lilting calypso to driving Latin American grooves, hypnotic swirling melodies, klezmer, township rhythms and gospel. The innovative music of this quartet has been performed on numerous UK tours, and the debut CD Sennen Cove was released in 2010 on Point Records. Clouts lives on the South West coast and the CD features melodic contemporary jazz pieces he has written inspired by the sights and sounds of the area while staying true to his own musical roots in African and Latin music. The quartet’s latest album, The Hour of Pear, has been enthusiastically received and captures composer Philip’s wide-ranging music superbly.

Three unique fiddlers of different backgrounds, the sound they create together is distinctive, pure and rich. Olav Luksengard Mjelva hails from Norway, Anders Hall from Sweden, and Kevin Henderson from Shetland (Boys of the Lough, Fiddlers’ Bid and Session A9). each musician is already one of the best in his field, and Anders Hall had the idea for this unique collaboration. Coming from three well-established fiddling traditions, each brings their style, approach and musical heritage to the collaboration. The sound they make is compelling and extraordinary. While completely unique, you might hear some similarities to Hannah James and Sam Sweeney’s playing, to give you a taste of the style and approach.

Because his own tale is perhaps the strangest and most disturbing of the lot... The Moonlit Road is a new one-man ghost story, adapted and inspired by the writings of Ambrose Bierce, edgar Allan Poe, M.R. James, Bram Stoker, and many others. IN TImE O’ sTrIfE By Joe Corrie. Adapted, designed and directed by Graham McLaren On the 30th anniversary of the 1984 miners’ strike, the National Theatre of Scotland revives Joe Corrie's 1926 classic play about a Fife mining community buckling under the strain of a seven month lockout. Driven by live, gutsy, folk-punk songs and intense, full-blooded choreography, this uncompromising production is a stark reminder that class conflict between those at the bottom of the social heap and those in power is perennial. 2013 cast featured. “McLaren's production unleashes a memorably angry, vivid and theatrical retelling of a vital story in Scottish history. So two years later, singers Dave Hemingway and Alison Wheeler, alongside life long members Damon Butcher (keyboards), Gaz Birtles (sax) and Tony Robinson (trumpet), came out of retirement and formed the 9 piece band, The South. Songs such as A Little Time – the bands number one single – sung by Dave Hemingway, just one of the many highlights in a 20 year career.
