Betrayal by Harold Pinter For seven years, Emma has been having an affair with Jerry, a literary agent, and her husband Robert’s best friend. Betrayal begins after the end of the affair, and pursues an intricate, gripping journey back to its very beginning. In a brilliant device, time is turned upside down as the play charts significant events in reverse. A ruthless exploration of the complexity of the human heart, Betrayal is Pinter’s most accessible work, enthralling and provocatively layered. WED 11 SEPTEMBER I 7.30pm I £17.50

The Taking of Zena Charbonne A psychological thriller. Zena Charbonne, wife of Environment Minister, Sir Michael Charbonne, hasn’t wanted for much in life – but she hasn’t achieved much either. Then on a wet Thursday afternoon in February, she is kidnapped. In the embrace of personal oblivion, Zena’s demons line up to be counted. Offered a fantastical choice between the dangerous new, or the safe old, Zena is trapped between two lovers. But, who, ultimately, is calling the shots? And what, really, is real? A blistering mix of performance, video & live music. “Timely, disturbing… the show is impossible to resist. It slices down to the hidden reality of the way we live now, in a way that makes the rest of our theatrical world seem pallid.” The Scotsman (on Apocalypse! 2011) Buy a ticket for Zena Charbonne and snap up a ticket to Des Dillon after (at 9pm) for just £5. Lawson is the best collector in the business. Operating in the seedy world of debt collection, he is at the top of the “profession”. However, when one of his clients commits suicide, Lawson’s life is shattered irrevocably. As the mystery deepens around the suicide, the noose tightens and the stakes are raised, as Lawson and his colleagues are pushed into a deadly power game from which there can only be one winner. This mysterious play, both funny and shocking, will have audiences on the edge of their seats. Combining the wit and power of Harold Pinter with the gritty milieu of David Mamet, The Collection is one powerful night at the theatre.

Educating Ronnie 2012 Fringe First Award Winner. Created by Joe Douglas and Gareth Nicholls, produced by macrobert and Utter. In 2002, Joe went on a gap year trip to Uganda. Amidst the six week blur of safaris, white-water rafting and orphanages, Joe made friends with Ronnie... Ronnie was 16, Joe was 18. They were both the eldest sons of large families. They both supported Manchester United. Six months later, back in Manchester, Joe got a text: “Brother my sponsor has pulled out on me and I want to stay in school. Can you help? Ronnie x”. That text was to change both of their lives and inextricably link them together. This is an astonishing true story performed by Joe himself which explores the murky processes behind bettering one’s self in Uganda. “As thought-provoking as they come.” ★★★★ The Independent Educating Ronnie will also be at Carnegie Hall on Sat 28 September.

Dracula by Bram Stoker “I can give you your forbidden, secret desire – the soft bitter touch of my kiss, the surrender, the chance to live and love for ever.” The year is 1897. Mankind is on the cusp of vast technological change and scientific mastery. Poised between traditional beliefs, the threat of the unknown and the shock of the new world, an altogether darker fear is emerging. Adapted by John Ginman, this brilliant, theatrical treatment of Bram Stoker’s adventure blends Victorian Gothic with the Contemporary, drawing eclectically on a wide range of forms of popular entertainment that were established or emerging at the time. With specially commissioned live music, powerful ensemble performances and innovative design, Blackeyed Theatre’s Dracula promises an exciting and thought-provoking theatrical experience. PAGE 10

Roadkill Roadkill begins on a bus with 25 audience members accompanying 13-year-old Mary and her “Auntie” to Mary’s new “home”, a benign looking apartment. Having just arrived from Nigeria with the hopes of learning English and one day landing a good job, Mary’s excited, bubbly chatter peppers the ride... Completely sold-out in Edinburgh, Paris, London, and Glasgow, Cora Bissett’s critically acclaimed, explosive Roadkill thrusts audiences into the brutal, complex, and hidden world of human trafficking (based on the real experiences of women trafficked to the west). Linwood No More The year is 2000. As the new millennium dawns, a homeless alcoholic awakens to reflect on the events that have changed his life. Recalling his first day at the Rootes car factory in Scotland, the audience is taken on a nostalgic, humourous, and often harrowing journey through his life in the town of Linwood, and the factory that is no more. On May 2, 1963, the Duke of Edinburgh drove the first completed vehicle out of the Rootes production line near Linwood, Renfrewshire. It was the first of about half a million made at the factory, which changed hands three times before its demise and eventual closure in 1981. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the launch of Scotland’s most famous motor car and this hard-hitting drama focuses on one worker from the factory and what happens to him after redundancy. The Tolpuddle Martyrs Story A new play by Neil Gore Towns End Productions present a new drama set in 1834 about the Tolpuddle Martyrs, following the extraordinary true story of George and Betsy Loveless. He was a Methodist preacher and the leader of the six Dorsetshire farm labourers who were tried, convicted and condemned to harsh transportation, for having the temerity to swear a secret oath and form a union to fight against a succession of wage cuts inflicted by the local landowner. This vitally important story is told using the entertaining theatrical style developed through the production of The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists; through Andy Vine's powerful political cartoons and animation; through puppetry and the exquisite musical arrangements by revered folk singer and squeezebox player John Kirkpatrick, of the songs and rallying hymns of the Dorset labouring classes that resound down the years. Scottish Opera present a new production of Handel’s

Rodelinda

THE BALL

Against a backdrop of faded Baroque grandeur, a cast of very contemporary characters tell a compelling tale of tyranny, love and the corrupting nature of power. Bertarido, King of Lombardy, has been defeated in battle and his enemy Grimoaldo has seized his throne. Bertarido’s queen, Rodelinda, mourns bitterly, little knowing that her husband is feigning death in order to exact revenge. Alone in a world of ruthless Machiavellian intrigue, she agrees to marry Grimoaldo. Distraught, Bertarido dismisses her as faithless, but allegiances change in the flick of a knife, and nothing is ever quite what it seems. Three instrumentalists accompany – on harpsichord, violin and cello – giving a strong flavour of the orchestra that Handel originally wrote for. The sensuous score is full of fragility, beauty and darkness, contrasting moments of frantic energy with those of exquisite stillness, reflecting the human passions at its core. Supported by The Alexander Gibson Circle and Eda, Lady Jardine Charitable Trust

In 2012, Dewar's hosted an experiment. Musicians from India and the UK were placed in a makeshift recording studio in Edinburgh, for a week, asked to come up with an album of original songs. King Creosote, Suhail Yusuf Khan, The Pictish Trail, Slow Club, Found, James Yorkston, Raghu Dixit and others came and went, collaborating and creating with those that they met. The results were rather special. A tempestuous journey from scandal and intrigue to lust and vengeance. Othello is a legend in his own lifetime: noble, brave, victorious. Who’s Been Sitting in my Chair? A delightful, playful version of a well-known tale – with porridge and bears and one-two-three chairs. A tale that’s not too BIG and not too small, but just right. Mind you, telling this story is not so easy when it's wintertime and the bears won't wake up – Zzzzzzzzz – what do bears dream about? But spring in the air puts a spring in all of our steps, and one little girl with golden hair is always a step ahead. And when Small Bear gets lost, we all get to go on a bear hunt! With original music, this play is for everyone who can count to three – especially if you’re aged 3 to 7! “Freehand Theatre's superb creations are a joy to see.” Times Educational Supplement PAGE 30

Tall Stories

The Snail and the Whale Based on the book by Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler Tall Stories present their latest exciting collaboration with Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. A tiny snail longs to see the world, so she hitches a lift on the tail of a humpback whale. Together they go on an amazing journey, experiencing sharks and penguins, icebergs and volcanoes. But when the whale gets beached, how will the tiny snail save him? Tall Stories’ adaptation is inspired by the work of Storybook Soldiers, who help British military personnel abroad record bedtime story CDs for their children back home. The amazing journey of the tiny snail is seen through the eyes of a very adventurous young girl – who’d love to be going round the world with her seafaring father... Created in Tall Stories’ unique style, combining storytelling, music and lots of laughs, this fun show is for everyone aged 4 and up. “An inventive and charming adaptation.” ★★★★The List

Lifeboat Lifeboat – the extraordinary World War II drama. By award-winning Catherine Wheels, Lifeboat is a true story of courage, survival and enduring friendship. On Friday 13 September 1940, a ship, The City of Benares, sets sail from Liverpool for Canada. On board were 90 evacuees escaping the relentless bombings and dangers of war torn Britain. Four days into the crossing, the ship was torpedoed and sank. Only eleven of the evacuees survived. Two fifteen year old girls, Bess Walder and Beth Cumming, spent 19 terrifying hours in the water on an upturned lifeboat. They willed each other to survive. Lifeboat tells their remarkable story.

Platypus in Boots Dear Family I've arrived safe and sound in Scotland and am looking forward to a wonderful winter holiday! I've even bought some tartan boots to fit in! Wish you were here. x Sydney the Platypus has travelled all the way from Australia to visit Glasgow and see snow for the first time. But it’s not easy being a tourist, especially when you look a little different and can’t understand the local lingo. All in all he’s a bit of a fish out of water, in desperate need of some friends. Come and help him find his way around the city and make his holiday one to remember! Created specially for 3 to 5 year olds, Platypus in Boots is a fun-filled mix of music, comedy and puppets, based on the misunderstandings that can come from words – but is ultimately a celebration of differences. With a host of Glasgow characters, snowball fights and a Brussels Sprout Von Trapp sing-along, it’s Christmas fun, but not quite as we know it… Created by writer and theatre-maker Martin O’Connor, and Rachel Drury, creator and composer of Scottish Opera’s ground-breaking shows for babies and toddlers – BabyO and SensoryO.

In Time O’ Strife By Joe Corrie. Directed by Graham McLaren “There’s nae power on earth can crush the men who can sing on a day like this.” Intensely physical, loud and charged with raw emotion, driven by explosive choreography and an original live soundtrack performed by leading Scottish musicians, the National Theatre of Scotland’s production of In Time O’Strife is a powerful re-imagining of Joe Corrie’s neglected classic about a Fife mining community during the General Strike. To raise funds for the soup kitchens feeding the miners and their starving families, Corrie wrote the play whilst on strike himself, exposing the brutal lives of a family staring hunger and defeat in the face.
