The Pictish Trail with support from eagleowl & Randolph’s Leap It’s not easy to pin down The Pictish Trail, aka Johnny Lynch. His critically acclaimed 2008 debut album, Secret Soundz Vol.1, was a gloriously eclectic slice of lo-fi folk-pop, and he is also one half of demented dance-pop duo Silver Columns with Adem Ilhan. As if that wasn’t enough, he also has his hands full running Fence Records, a DIY indie label based in the East Neuk of Fife, which he runs alongside Kenny Anderson, best known as King Creosote. After a summer spent playing the pick of the UK’s music festivals with his band, Lynch put the finishing touches to Secret Soundz Vol 2, released in January 2013. He will be accompanied on stage by his latest signings to Fence, the Edinburgh-based six headed beast, eagleowl, and Adam Ross of Randolph’s Leap. “Compulsory listening. Viennese Strauss Gala What better way to spend your Valentine’s evening than listening to the romantic sounds of Strauss. The Lost Art of the Film Explainer During the silent era, the live musician was an essential part of the cinema experience, but some audiences were also treated to the finely honed craft of the Film Explainer. Part narrator and part actor, the Film Explainer stood next to the screen enriching the movies with an entertaining combination of background information, unique interpretation and theatrical storytelling. The art of the Film Explainer has since been largely forgotten. Enter stage right renowned Scottish storyteller Andy Cannon and cellist/composer Wendy Weatherby. Andy and Wendy revive this lost art with their popular brand of traditional stories and music accompanying rare films from the Scottish Screen Archive including Scotland’s first fiction film from 1912, the year the Hippodrome cinema first opened its doors. But Melchior is the brightest boy in school and knows sex is just a natural act that ends in the beauty of childbirth. Crushed by Wendla’s death and persecuted by the authorities (and even his own parents) Melchior battles through purgatory where he confronts the ghosts of his past. The Rite of Spring To celebrate its 100th anniversary, The Rite of Spring has been entirely re-choreographed especially for the Bolshoi, by contemporary British choreographer Wayne McGregor. Originally created by Igor Stravinsky and Vaslav Nijinsky for Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in 1913, this new working revisits the themes of the Russian Spring, The Adoration of the Earth and The Exalted Sacrifice, with McGregor applying his characteristic energy and fluidity to this new creation and re-working. Rapture Theatre present this Scottish theatre classic in a thrilling new production. Set in Glasgow, on the day of the Orange Walk, Bill MacWilliam is determined that his son, Cameron, will join him on the walk. However, prompted by his mother’s recent death, Cameron has started to question his father’s beliefs. Throw in the arrival of the staunch, Irish catholic spinster from downstairs with her pregnant niece, and comic chaos and dramatic conflict ensue. Sara and Jonathan are both graduates of the Ballet West Upper School where they achieved their ARAD and Solo Seal of the Academy. My Name Is Rachel Corrie is a one-woman play composed from Rachel’s own journals, letters and emails – creating a portrait of a messy, skinny, articulate, Salvador Dali-loving chain smoker, who left her home in Olympia, Washington, “to support non-violent resistance to Israel’s military occupation.” Rachel’s writings were edited by British actor Alan Rickman and Guardian editor Katherine Viner. A powerfully honest insight into one of the most complicated international political conflicts that continues to resonate across the world. This highly acclaimed production was a sell-out success at the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow, in March 2010. Sam Lee and friends with support Thomas McCarthy
Sam Lee, Mercury Prize nominated folk singer, promoter and animateur released his debut album Ground Of Its Own in June 2012. The recording is a musical manifesto, reflecting the artistic journey Sam has taken so far and the less than conventional route getting there. A naturally gifted voice, singing was new to him until his first encounter with folk song some 6 years ago. This discovery of a new world compelled him to abandon his work as a visual artist and embark on a journey into the old songs of The British Isles. Sam is fast becoming accepted as a new pioneer, defining the sound, sight and texture of contemporary folksong. He was given the 2011 Arts Foundation Award, which for the first time, honoured folk music amongst the art forms. Likewise his live band, Sam Lee and Friends, carve a new acoustic with their homemade and mongrelised instrumentation using unconventional and contemporary arrangements that challenge preconceptions of what traditional folk should sound like.

Carlton Mains Frickley Colliery Band See one of the biggest names in the brass band world this Spring. Currently no.10 in the World, the band was established in 1884 in West Yorkshire. The original bandsmen worked in the local lime kilns, quarries and brick yards with one of the bands’ first engagements playing at Queen Victoria’s Jubilee celebrations. In November 1923, the band adopted its current name from the then mine owners, the Carlton Main Coal Company. The next 50 years saw the band at the very top of the brass band movement, winning almost every major title. The band count themselves fortunate to have many truly world class musicians in their ranks including the multi-award-winning Principal Cornet player Kirsty Abbotts, whose many awards include being the solo champion of Great Britain and best soloist at the English Nationals. Cahalen Morrison & Eli West When Morrison and West released their debut album The Holy Coming of The Storm in early 2011 it received almost universal acclaim and ended up in many a top ten album list at the end of the year. It was only when she moved to Bristol nearly a decade ago that a latent appreciation of fado – the folk-blues of her homeland that, perhaps appropriately, resonates with highly emotional themes of loss and longing – began to develop. And Claudia’s more than made amends in the intervening years, effortlessly gliding towards fado’s top table with each syllable uttered by her traffic-stopping voice every bit as beguiling as the work of her compatriots Mariza and Ana Moura. Not only was Claudia’s debut album, Silencio, the first fado record cut in the UK in more than half a century, it also announced an impressive new talent. An Evening Up Close with Jai McDowall Following on from his success as winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2011, Jai is delighted to take his show on the road to perform his songs in this up close and personal style.
